(Omaha, Neb. - September 20, 2010) Sentry HC Good Behavior Pheromone Collars are giving the KwaZulu-Natal Wild Dog Project in South Africa new hope in their efforts to save the endangered African Wild Dog species, known as the most vicious canine species alive. The collars, developed and used to help house pets overcome behavioral problems caused by stress and anxiety, are being used to help reduce aggression caused by stress during the initial introduction of wild dogs into newly created packs in protected areas. During the 30 days the collars release pheromones, pack politics settle with less violence, helping ensure that the species continues.
"When you're trying to change male dogs from one pack to another to prevent inbreeding, they often kill each other. Pheromone sprays had little success because they could not be applied long enough," explained Peter Oberem, a veterinarian and managing director of Afrivet, who brought the collars to the KwaZulu-Natal Wild Dog Project. "These pheromone collars have been a great success. They are long lasting and the mobility they provide, traveling on the dogs as they move about, has been a key part of the success."

The collars contain appeasing pheromones, created to mimic those produced naturally by mother dogs and cats to calm their young. Because dogs and cats recognize these pheromones throughout life, they can be used on pets at any age. The collars release pheromones over a 30-day period, helping animals to better handle stress and anxiety, common triggers to behavioral problems such as aggression and anti-social behaviors like hissing, inappropriate marking, and destructive behaviors like chewing. Because the pheromones are not absorbed systemically, they do not produce side effects. Pheromone therapy is preferred by many veterinarians as a first line treatment for suffering pets, above sedative medications which can cause side effects. This makes the collars a safe, natural way to address behavioral issues, either in conjunction with behavior training or as an alternative when training does not work.

"We're very pleased that the Sentry HC Good Behavior Pheromone Collars have proven so effective even on these wild animals, and to be a part of saving this species," says Caryn Stichler, vice president of marketing for Sergeant's Pet Care Products. "The pheromones help dogs and cats overcome common stressors such as separation anxiety, thunderstorms, fireworks, moving, trips to the vet and boarding. We were already aware that collars are extremely effective for house pets. In our studies, more than 70% of dogs' stress-induced behaviors were minimized or eliminated. Results of a similar study on cats were even more dramatic," Stichler explained.

The success of the Sentry HC Good Behavior Pheromone Collars has conservationists considering replicating the project using pheromone collars in more conservation projects in the future. Other wild animals with endangered or dwindling populations such as the African Jackal could also benefit from the pheromone collars.

Based on the success of the Sentry HC Good Behavior Pheromone Collars in Wild Dog pack integration efforts in South Africa, trials are underway using the Sentry HC Good Behavior Pheromone Collar for cats with African Wild Cats at the Dabchick Wildlife Reserve and Conservancy in South Africa's northeastern Limpopo Province. This is the first-ever pheromone collar for cats, and has had very high success rates with domesticated cats.

For questions or to secure exclusive coverage of this story, please contact Patsy Sumner at 402-938-7045 or Kelly Lytle Baehr at 402-938-7035.
For more information, please visit sentrypetcare.com/wilddogs

About Sergeant's Pet Care Products

Sergeant's Pet Care Products, Inc., is based in Omaha, Neb.

A Calming Collar

Introducing a cat collar that’s both fashionable and calming

By Sandy Robins

A box arrived at the front door last week from Sergeant's containing some really useful products including the latest pheromone collars for cats.

This is such a great idea because cat parents face so many feline stress and anxiety situations on a regular basis.

The Sentry Good Behavior Calming Pheromone collar contains all natural ingredients known for their soothing and calming effects. The efficacy of the collar is a month. What I like about it is that it also has a safety breakaway clasp and is deemed safe for both kittens and adult cats.

I wish the collars had been around a few years ago when we moved to our new house because the whole ordeal really stressed my late cat Muffin.

Next week, Cherri and Nick are going to Colorado for a few days. Isabella and Mr. Pants are going for a “staycation” to their Granny Rhoda’s. Although they have visited on numerous occasions in the past, Isabella takes time to settle in. And besides, she is still a bit “grumpy” about having to deal with Mr. Pants’ boisterous kitten behavior. So I handed the collar to Cherri for Izzy to wear for the car trip and on her little vacation.

For anyone traveling this summer, this is an excellent idea to help reduce feline travel anxiety and help a cat adapt to a new environment. The manufacturer also says the collar can be used to reduce separation anxiety (a lot of cats hate being left home alone). The collar can also help reduce destructive behavior that can result from boredom, as well as inappropriate markings.

And the best part – they are lavender in color – beautiful and very fashionable right now. It happens to be a really good shade for the already beautiful Isabella.

(Omaha, NE) The Sentry HC Good Behavior™ Pheromone Collar from Sergeant’s was recently featured on the nationally-recognized Lifetime Network morning show, The Balancing Act. An educational segment focusing on how to address problematic pet behavior hailed the Good Behavior collar as an affordable, easy-to-use and very effective way pet owners can help calm their cats and dogs and reduce unwanted behaviors caused by anxiety and stress, including separation anxiety. The collar is one of Sergeant’s latest over-the-counter health care products for dogs and cats of all ages and breeds.

The Balancing Act welcomed Dr. Rodney Van Horn of the Omaha Animal Medical Group as their special guest to address the topic. Dr. Van Horn says, “Mother dogs and cats comfort their offspring by emitting pheromones as they nurse. The puppies and kittens associate this scent with being safe and satisfied. Later in the pets' lives, these same pheromones can still trigger feelings of safety and well-being. So no matter what the age of the pet, the Sentry HC Good Behavior collar can be effective at addressing those stress related behavioral issues.”

He adds, “The Sentry HC Good Behavior™ Pheromone Collar gives pet owners a convenient, safe way to help their pets reduce the negative behavior that comes from stress and anxiety, including separation anxiety. It is clinically proven to provide relief.”

“Consumers expressed the need for a product that addresses their pets’ behavioral issues. Sergeant’s responded by creating the Sentry HC Good Behavior™ Pheromone Collar,” explains Bob Scharf, president and CEO of Sergeant’s. “This natural approach is a good alternative to the powerful prescription medicines typically used to control anxious behavior. It can be used in conjunction with behavior modification training or in cases where training does not help the pet overcome the anxiety or stress causing the problem.”

This is the first pheromone collar available for cats, a welcome help to cat owners who are frustrated with their cats’ behavioral problems and with the limitations of pheromone diffusers and sprays. Because diffusers only work in a confined area, the Sentry HC Good Behavior Collar is a better alternative for use at home or on-the-go. Pet owners are excited because they can now purchase a pheromone collar without a trip to the veterinarian, making it an affordable solution.

There are an estimated 10 million dogs and cats in the United States that suffer from separation anxiety, the leading cause of behavioral problems. These problems don’t just result in ruined furniture, half-eaten shoes or inappropriate marking, either: behavioral problems are cited as the number one reason for animal abandonment at shelters. The Sentry HC Good Behavior™ Pheromone Collar is contributing to lowering those numbers by providing pet owners with an over-the-counter way to address behavior issues.

To view the segment, visit http://thebalancingact.com/show_segment.php?id=1482 For more information about the product, please visit www.sentrypetcare.com.

About Sergeant’s Pet Care Products

Sergeant’s Pet Care Products, Inc., is based in Omaha, Neb. Comet, a seven-year-old Greyhound with a dramatic life story and a dazzling, healthy smile, took the top spot in the Superstar Smiles Photo Contest sponsored by Petrodex, a dental brand from Sergeant’s Pet Care Products, Inc.

Omaha, Neb.

A Revolution for a Man's Best Friend

They say that dog is man’s best friend, but in the case of health care, this is often reversed. For years, medical technology developed for human care has been modified to solve pet health issues. From oncology treatments to remedies for deteriorating knees, the transfer of technology from humans to canines has exploded over the past two decades. When it comes to dental care for dogs, however, few major breakthroughs have happened in that time. But that all changed when two human dental experts – Janet Wehrli, a veteran dental hygienist and Dr. Gene Wagner, DDS – realized that they could put their knowledge to use for our four-legged friends. Revolutionary results followed.

A Dental Hygienist, Soldiers in Iraq, and Your Dog’s Teeth

When she began working in dental hygiene nearly 30 years ago, Janet Wehrli never imagined that her career would go to the dogs – literally. She used the extensive knowledge she had gained in her career and her understanding of the chemistry behind tooth decay to develop a gel that can remove plaque and tartar rapidly at home. The gel, delivered in a tray that stays in the mouth for a few minutes to treat the teeth, did more than simply clean. As the first test subject, Wehrli observed a rapid, noticeable effect on her teeth.

Later, she realized that this gel also protected teeth from plaque for longer periods of time. She turned to Dr. Floyd Knoop at Creighton University School of Medicine, a distinguished professor of microbiology and immunology. Together, Wehrli and Knoop determined, through computer-aided clinical testing, that the active ingredient actually soaked into the teeth, remaining between the bonds of enamel, fighting bacteria and plaque formation before it could do damage to the teeth! The gel was extensively tested and eventually became available to consumers.

In time, Wehrli discussed the findings with her own personal dentist, Dr. Frank Driscoll. In discussion with other dentists about military patients returning from duty in Iraq, the need for something to prevent tooth decay in the field became evident. Soldiers returned with severe dental problems as a result, in part, of their lack of access to clean water while in the field and overall difficulties in maintaining proper daily dental care. Wehrli’s gel was discussed as an excellent alternative, if only the benefits could be delivered instantly by applying the gel, rather than through minutes of surrounding teeth with the gel in a tray.

Wehrli, Knoop and Driscoll then developed the next generation of the gel, which acts simply by applying it to teeth. The product works immediately to remove plaque and tartar and, after initial build-up, keeps protecting teeth and gums for weeks. Because approval for use of such a product for military personnel could take years, Wehrli began to think of other human uses for the gel. While pondering who might benefit – hospitalized or incapacitated patients, for example – she was struck by a sign she saw in a bakery one day. It advertised special dog biscuits, promoting them as excellent for scraping plaque from dogs’ teeth and promoting oral health.

As a devoted grandmother of children who love their own family dog, Janet immediately realized this was a huge need! Pet oral health is as important as human oral health. As Wehrli thought about how much her grandchildren loved ‘kisses’ from the dogs (and the colonies of dangerous bacteria her grandchildren were exposed to as a result of this canine affection), she became determined to help pet owners everywhere improve their pets’ dental health with a long-lasting, easy-to-apply gel that would remove the bacteria and plaque that lead to tooth decay, gingivitis and, perhaps most dreaded, doggy breath.

After modifications and testing, the product patent was approved. Wehrli worked with Petrodex, a world leader in pet dental product innovation, to get the Petrodex Ultra Advanced Dental Whitening Paste to the dogs that need it. This new product is a revolutionary advancement in pet dental care, allowing pet owners to bring the at-home dental care of their pets to a new level with unprecedented ease and effectiveness. It will be on the shelves of pet specialty stores in April 2010.

A Dentist, His Dog, and Tooth Hugging

Dr. Gene Wagner, DDS, knows a thing or two about dental care. He is not only a dentist, but a legendary inventor in the dental world. In fact, before delving into the canine world, Dr. Wagner already held 32 different patents in oral care, many developed for companies such as Arm & Hammer, Procter & Gamble and Dorel Juvenile. It was his work with Dorel Juvenile (whose Safety First, Cosco and Maxi Cosi brands may already be in your home) that helped him step up to aid the canine world.

One day, as Dr. Wagner‘s story goes, he walked into a pet specialty store to buy some dental care items for his beloved dog. In looking at what was available, he was struck: these products were not designed for the unique anatomy of a dog’s mouth! In fact, most were simply modified human products. His development of specialized oral care products for infants and babies reinforced in him the need to design products to work with the unique structure of the mouths they assist.

He set to work immediately, ultimately creating the first toothbrush designed specifically for a dog’s mouth – the Petrodex Tooth-Hugger Brush. The story at the right gives all the details on this revolutionary advancement in doggy dental care. Viva la revolucion!

About Sergeant’s Pet Care Products

Sergeant’s Pet Care Products, Inc., is based in Omaha, Neb.

News Release
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Media Contact: Patsy Sumner
402.938.7045
psumner@sergeants.com
Sentry HC Introduces First-Ever Toothbrush Designed Specifically for Dogs
(Omaha, Neb. - July 14)

Sentry HC, a division of Sergeant's Pet Care Products, Inc., introduces the first toothbrush designed to work with the unique structure of a dog's mouth to improve oral health. The Petrodex Tooth-Hugger TM brush is specifically designed to keep pets' teeth clean and healthy between visits to the veterinarian. With unique bumps, nubs and ridges, it gently cleans all exposed surfaces of pets' teeth. The outer edges of the brush massage gums and loosen material caught in the tooth/gum line. Outer ridges and nubs clean the tongue and cheeks. The specially-designed brush head creates the best angles for cleaning.

Anatomically, pets' teeth differ substantially from human teeth. The Tooth-Hugger brush is shaped to fit exactly over the pet's teeth and brush all sides simultaneously. This makes the brushing process quick and efficient. Because toothpaste fits into a unique trench within the brush itself, much less of the paste or gel is lost or swallowed by the pet compared to using a conventional toothbrush.

"Although pet toothbrushes were previously available, none were designed to address the specific anatomy and needs of a dog's mouth," says Gene Wagner, DDS, inventor of the Petrodex Tooth-Hugger brush. Dr. Wagoner holds 32 patents for products designed for oral care, primarily in adult and pediatric human dentistry. "My inspiration for this product came from my own pet. I wanted to purchase a brush for their teeth and realized that the brushes available were really human toothbrushes packaged as a pet product. Clearly, it was not designed for pet teeth. That is when I started to design the Petrodex Tooth-Hugger brush."

"The dangers of poor oral hygiene are as serious for pets as they are for humans. In addition to plaque, tartar, persistent bad breath and tooth decay, neglect in this area can also lead to more serious health issues such as heart and kidney failure, as well as a reduced life expectancy. We're proud to introduce a product that protects pets' health," explains Bob Scharf, CEO of Sergeant's Pet Care Products. "For more than 140 years, our goal has been to improve the quality of life for pets, and the Petrodex Tooth Hugger brush is the next innovative product in that long line."

Two versions of the Petrodex Tooth-Hugger brush are available, one for small dogs and one for larger breeds. In addition, the Tooth-Hugger Dosing Brush is also available. The brush is preloaded with Petrodex Dental Gel. Petrodex contains Chlorhexidine, shown to kill the bacteria that form plaque and lead to periodontal disease.
Does your dog tear up your couch, destroy your shoes or chew just about anything else in its path? If so, Sergeants Pet Care Products wants to see your dog in action for the Sergeant's "Bad Dog" video contest.
All you need to do is catch your dog misbehaving, capture it on video and upload it to YouTube to take advantage of the one time your dog's destructive behavior could be rewarded. You see, your dog may not be a "bad" dog at all. It may actually be suffering from a chronic behavioral issue. In fact, an estimated 10 million dogs in the United States suffer from separation anxiety, the leading cause of behavioral problems.

Tamar Geller, celebrity life coach for dogs and author of the best seller, The Loved Dog, the playful non-aggressive way to teach your dog good behavior, will judge contest entries and determine which three dogs are the most "behaviorally challenged" of them all. "Millions of dogs and cats go to animal shelters each year, many just waiting to be euthanized," says Geller. Many pet owners don't realize that most behavioral issues can be successfully addressed."

Geller's celebrity clients include Oprah Winfrey, Ben Affleck, Hillary Swank, Natalie Portman, Courtney Cox-Arquette, Owen Wilson, Nicollette Sheridan, Brad Paisley and Larry King. She is a dog expert for The Today Show and was featured on 20/20, Larry King Live, The Oprah Winfrey Show, Live with Regis and Kelly and more.

Sergeant's recently launched the Sentry HC Good BehaviorTM Pheromone Collar for Dogs, a convenient, inexpensive and effective way to calm dogs who have behavior problems caused by stressful situations.

"The Sentry HC Good Behavior Pheromone Collar mimics the pheromone that a mother dog naturally produces to calm and reassure her puppies," says Bob Sharf, Sergeant's president and CEO. "Dogs recognize these pheromones throughout life, so no matter what the dogs' age, the collar is effective. This natural approach is a good alternative to the powerful prescription medicines typically used to control anxious behavior."

Scharf says, unlike pheromone diffusers that work in a confined area, the Sentry HC Good Behavior Pheromone Collar for Dogs can be used at home or on the go and pet owners can buy it without a trip to the veterinarian at a fraction of the cost.

The grand prize winner will receive a $500 prize, including dog behavior training and oodles of pet care products. Second and third runners up win prizes valued at $250 and $100, respectively. In addition, the first 100 people to submit a contest video will receive a free SentryHC Good BehaviorTM Pheromone Collar.

To enter the contest, go to http://www.youtube.com/group/baddogcontest and click on the "Join this Group" link. Once you are a member, click on the "Add Videos" link and upload your video. The contest runs February 17 through March 17.

About Tamar Geller
Tamar Geller is a celebrity life coach for dogs and their people who love them and author of the bestseller, The Loved Dog, the playful non-aggressive way to teach your dog good behavior.
Sergeant's Pet Care Products, Inc. introduced the Sentry HC Good BehaviorTM Pheromone Collar for Dogs, a convenient, inexpensive and effective way to calm dogs who have behavior problems caused by stressful situations, at Global Pet Expo, the pet industry's largest trade show in Orlando, Florida, on Friday, Feb. 13, 2009. The collar, available over the counter, is Sergeant's latest behavioral health care product for dogs of all ages and breeds.
"The Sentry HC Good Behavior Pheromone Collar mimics the pheromone that a mother dog naturally produces to calm and reassure her puppies," says Bob Scharf, president and CEO of Sergeant's.

Sergeant's Pet Care Products, Inc. introduces the SentryHC Good BehaviorTM Pheromone Collar for Dogs, a convenient, inexpensive and effective way to calm dogs who have behavioral problems caused by stressful situations. The collar, available over the counter, is Sergeant's latest innovative behavioral health care product for dogs of all ages and breeds.
Independent clinical tests show that the Sentry HC Good Behavior Pheromone Collar is proven to modify behaviors such as excessive barking, destructive behavior and inappropriate marking for up to 30 days. Dogs with chronic behavioral issues, caused by separation anxiety, experience dramatic positive changes in their behavior in one to two days. Behavioral problems in dogs are commonly induced by events such as thunderstorms and fireworks, traveling, visits to the groomer, boarding, and the arrival of a new baby.

"The Sentry HC Good Behavior Pheromone Collar mimics the pheromone that a mother dog naturally produces to calm and reassure her puppies," says Caryn Stichler, vice president of marketing. "Dogs recognize these pheromones throughout life, so no matter what the dog's age, the collar is effective. This natural approach is a good alternative to the powerful prescription medicines typically used to control anxious behavior."

Stichler says the collar's calming lavender and chamomile scent also provides a soothing fragrance. The collar lasts up to 30 days, but it can be worn longer without any side effects. Unlike pheromone diffusers that work in a confined area, the collar is a convenient alternative for pet owners because it can be used wherever the dog goes, whether at home or on the go.

Sergeant's Sentry HC Good Behavior Pheromone Collar for Dogs is available nationwide at pet specialty stores.

About Sergeant's Pet Care Products

Sergeant's Pet Care Products, Inc., is based in Omaha, Neb., and is a leading supplier of pet supplies including flea and tick remedies, health and well-being products, natural and formulated treats, rawhide chews, toys and accessories.
One-year-old bulldogs Doc and Wyatt from Bend, Oregon are this year's grand-prize winners of the Sergeant's Pet Care Products "Splish Splash" Photo contest. Pet specialist Steve Dale served as the celebrity judge in the eight week contest.
"Selecting a winner was a lot harder than I thought it would be," says Dale. "It's pretty tough to look at nearly 500 pictures of cute dogs and pick the best of the best. But, for me, Doc and Wyatt just stood out from the rest."

Three winners were selected each week and received an Ooh La La!(TM) doggie gift basket of boutique items, as well as a spot in the final round. As the grand prize winners, Doc and Wyatt receive a custom portrait of themselves, painted by a professional artist from http://www.artpaw.com/.

"Oh, the boys and I are so excited," says Deborah Sprague, Doc and Wyatt's owner. "I just have to make sure they don't let this go to their heads! In all seriousness, and ironically, we lost our bulldog, Avalanche, last year, so we had an artist paint a picture of him," says Sprague. "That picture is hanging in our dining room. Now Doc and Wyatt will get to join Avalanche on our new 'Bulldog Wall of Fame,'" says Sprague.

"We really want to thank everyone who participated in the contest and Steve Dale for serving as the celebrity judge," says Caryn Stichler, vice president of marketing at Sergeant's. "It was a lot of fun and a great way to celebrate the relationship we have with our pets."

Visit http://www.sergeants.com/ for additional information.
