Sitemap for WordPress Plugin Update

Grab the updated plugin for Google XML Sitemaps by Arne version 3.3.3, which now allows you to include non-WordPress pages on your site to be part of the sitemap for your web site. This is a great addition to the update, previously i had to hard code in pages that where not part of the WordPress infrastructure and each time you changed WordPress content you had to redo the sitemap again.

Once in the plug in settings, go to the ‘additional pages’ section and add in your non WordPress URL and select a change frequency time,one last note is that if your blog is not your root directory but something like http://myurl.com/blog/ then once the sitemap is built in the blog directory you need to moved it up to the root directory.

One other RSS feed directory to get into is http://www.feedage.com, this will spread the content of your site to a wider audience. The current amount of feeds on there is close to 6 million!

So go there, create a free account and how get your RSS feed onto to feedage by using the submit option.

For WordPress users you can add the URL http://www.feedage.com/submit.php to the Update Services in the Settings > Writing as explained in this RSS ping post. Or you can also add a plugin called Feedage Tracker which will submit your sites RSS feed to Feedage, but you still have to have an account set up on the Feedage site which is free.

One final note is that if you still want to channel your subscribers through Google’s Feedburner as described here, when entering the feed address use the Feedburner format address; for example this sites’ Feedburner address is http://feeds.feedburner.com/seo-hub - whereas the regular RSS feed address takes the format of…http://www.seo-hub.net/feed/

Best SEO tool Plugin for WordPress

Ok hands down the best plugin for WordPress for SEO is Platinum SEO Plugin from Techbliss Online Dot Com, it comes post the previous favourite plugin “All In One SEO” which was discontinued (but is now again supported) and if previously used, all values entered from All In One can be migrated to Platinum SEO as an option in the plugin. From what i can gather it is the actual author of the previous plugin that now develops the new one.

Anyway the plugin is a “must have” for any serious SEO work, it allows for granular level settings on pages and posts for key meta tags such as title, description and keywords, as well as follow and index options for robots and options re-writes on titles.

These granular level settings are a set of fields as per edit post and page inputs in WordPress backend and are simply not available out of the box of the natural WordPress software.

There is an additional option in the external keyword tool once you have a Google account which allows you to source keywords from a competitors URL or any URL for that matter, which is very cool, not just the keywords in the meta tag but content rich keywords.

To get the option, make sure your signed into your Google account and then try the external Google keyword tool, sometimes you have to try a couple of times to make the option appear.

Switch the radio button to “Website Content” then pop the url into the text input field and get the goodies! Which will list in summary format at the top of the results and then alternative words to the summarised ones are found listed below.

One invaluable free tool for getting keyword ideas is the external keyword tool from Google. The results are based on Google search results over the prior 12 months but on a monthly basis.

When you first log in depending on where you are geographically, you’ll need to set your preferences in the edit link on the line;

“Results are tailored to English, United States Edit“,

..selecting All Countries and Territories will give you a global idea.

Then in the text field for entering keywords put in keywords that you are thinking of to get some similar ideas, typically a keyword combination should be a 2 or 3 word combo and searching on these will give you results on similar keywords that are both searched on by a searcher and paid for by an advertiser, the point being you can see what keywords are more popluar and worth using on your site. These results are sortable by column heading and you expand the columns to display in the drop down just above the column headings.

Add all the keywords you want and download as a textfile for later viewing or sort by cost per click to budget for your next sponsored link campaign. You can also expand the results to be exact, broad, negative or phrase.

Feedburner Feeding Frenzy

So what is a Feedburner feed? How do you get one? and What do you do with it?

As well as our regular RSS/ATOM/XML web feeds we also have to consider a Feedburner Feed.

I must admit I was a bit baffled about Feedburner when i first heard about it, I mean doesn’t our regular RSS feeds do the job. Well it does, but a Feedburner feed is a smarter way to managing a feed.

Feedburner is a service that was acquired by Google back in 2007 for $100 million, so now you can get it from your Google box of tricks. It essential takes your regular RSS feeds and channels them in a different way and lets you see who’s subscribing. Here are some of the advantages:

The Feedburner feed takes over the management of distributing the feed to your subscribers which is a good thing as you will not incur the bandwidth usage making Feedburner take the hit, they obviously have to poll you but that will just be one source not multiple ones.

The RSS feed can converted to more of a http, browser appearance when converted from your RSS XML look and feel. So it can go from this;

Feedburner offers an analytic service so you can track who is subscribing, where they are subscribing from and what items/articles they are clicking on.

You can add Adsense you your feed to hopefully monetize it.

The feed can be pinged to RSS and search directories that subscribe to Feedburners feeds, you just need to enable ‘pingshot’ from the Publicise tab of your Feedburner option tab.

So when distributing your feed be sure to give the Feedburner URL. There is a guide on how to do redirect RSS feeds from certain blogging software here. For WordPress use the plug in FD Feedburner Plugin for the redirection.

All in all it makes perfect sense to do it, you get to know who is interested in you, less bandwidth on your server, the potential to monetize the feed and the ability to increase your traffic through the pingshot service. Everyone’s a winner.

Lost in the Serps

How do you find what page your site is ranked or listed on in the Google SERPS?

Well you can do some painstaking trawling through the search result pages and if you’re lower ranked that’s going to take some time and you might even miss it, with a Firefox plug in and a script you can let Google take you there in a click, which is very nice.

Get that monkey off your back here with a Firefox plugin, well it is called Grease Monkey, install the plug in and restart Firefox. Then install the script from userscripts.org called “Google!, what page am I”, there’s a “Install” button on the page that installs it for you as long as you have already got the Grease Monkey plugin.

So now when you use Google do the search and when the results are displayed a new text box appears in the top right which is were you type in your domain or the domain you are trying to match to the search and click Go.

Find your page in the serps

The script will search the first 30 pages of Googles SERPS, if you are rankng lower than that, well i feel for you but you can edit the script in your local text editor to increase the amount of pages it searches on.
