What is Internal SEO and how does it work?

Each month, we publish an SEO Guide for Beginners – helping both businesses and newbie webmasters to better get a grasp of what SEO is, the technical details and advice on picking the right SEO agency for your company.

Internal SEO, also known as On-Page SEO, is the process of editing a websites code, content and structure so that is better configured for Search Engines. SEO Companies carry out Internal SEO with the primary aim of placing unique references to keywords through a website code.

By carrying out a Keyword Distribution process, it will could help a search engine understand what a websites content is relevant too, and encourage it to rank the website for that particular keyword.

On-Page SEO Techniques

Successful internal or on site SEO depends upon the creation of content that is suitable and pleasing to both search engines and to the visitors of your site.

To begin the process of on site SEO, keywords appropriate to your business and services must be chosen. These words must be selected with your target audience in mind. Words that are too general, such as “jewellery” will be tricky to make perform on search engines.

A regional phrase or longtail keyword is a much better option to target potential customers. Whittling key phrases down to something specific to your business is the first step of the SEO process.

“Jewellery Buckinghamshire” or “Silver Bridal Jewellery” are examples of key phrases that can be more successful. Even though the amount of searches for these phrases will be considerably less than for “Jewellery”, there is likely to be reduced competition in that area, meaning a higher chance of performing keywords and traffic to your website.

Google will pick up on well-written content that it relevant to the subject. All of the content on your website must be completely original; nothing can be a duplication of anything else on the web. A website called Copyscape can detect any sites that contain the same content as yours. Using keywords for headers, page titles, and throughout your company description is how an SEO friendly site should be structured.

After ensuring everything on your site is well written with good keyword distribution, it is time to tackle internal linking. This involves creating links between the various pages of your website so that Google and other search engines can see what the subject of each page is.

A good way to do this is to turn keywords into hyperlinks that lead to the page that they relate to. All pages should contain links that lead back to the homepage. To make sure the whole site is simple to navigate (for visitors as well as search engines); sitemaps are extremely useful tools. Used as a footer, a sitemap can list every page of the website. Creating an XML sitemap to submit to Google is an important technique to get your website indexed.

Next Time..

The techniques outlined above cover the basics of internal SEO. This is the first step towards undertaking the process of successful search engine optimisation. In the next blog post we will explore the workings of external or off site SEO.

Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) is the process of configuring and editing a website to help it be better understood by Search Engines such as Google, Yahoo & Bing.

SEO Companies offer this process and utilise it as an Internet Marketing Service to help businesses appear effectively on a Search Engine for a particular keyword(s).

How does SEO Work?

Example: ‘John’s Plumbing’ in Nottingham approaches an SEO Company with the goal of appearing on Page 1 of Google UK for the search term ‘Plumber Nottingham’.

‘Plumber Nottingham’ according to said SEO Company has 1,000 Searches on Google UK each month, driving traffic and potential leads to the ‘John’s Plumbing’ website if they appeared on Page 1 of Google.

Search Engine Optimisation as a service can be an invaluable way of marketing any business on the Internet. Potential customers are using the power of a Search Engine to find what they need more than ever before, and SEO can ensure your business is the first one they see.

What is On-Page & Off-Page SEO?

In terms of the technical process, Search Engine Optimisation is usually carried out in two ways, called On-Page Optimisation and Off-Page Optimisation.

On-Page SEO consists of editing a Website’s content, functionality and structure, such as implementing behind-the-scenes tweaks within a websites code and placing references to keywords. Search Engines pay attention to the references of keywords and structure of a website and use this information as a signal in rankings.

Off-Page SEO is essentially made up of Link Building. Search Engines determine a websites rankings by first investigating what a websites content is relevant too, and then secondly if their any other websites on the Internet that certify this fact.

SEO Companies as part of an SEO Service, build links on an ongoing basis that certify that a clients website is relevant to a particular keyword, encouraging a Search Engine to rank the website higher for that keyword over time.

Overall, these techniques are just a small snapshot of the signals a Search Engine uses to determine rankings (Google has stated they use over 200 in particular). In the next blog post, we’ll be looking at On-Page SEO a little more in-depth.
