Enemy? Frenemy?”

It really gets my attention so I decided to comment from beepbeep blog section of thenational.ae but apparentlyAfter creating a long comment when I click Submit button it does not allow me to do it as it gives me an error. see the image below.

maybe I use the special word which is SEO..:) so I just decided to post my comment here in my blog and at least it also helps me to update my blog too. Thanks to the error

Below is the start of my comment about SEO is our friend. Enjoy!

I will try to understand and explain some points of your blog post and first my answer in your title is YES! SEO is our friend and not enemy and we will find it why, after I finish my comment:)

“Scott thinks that local companies need to do a better job with search engine optimisation (SEO), but I disagree - and I’ll tell you why, after the jump.”

I do agree with Scott, Why?, First I will give some info about search engine or best example is google. Google is a search engine platform which has step-by-step procedure and it called algorithm. This algorithm index, crawl & process billions of websites and return a relevant result when someone made a query.

By helping google and other search engines to index your website you need to comply on some guidelines and SEO comes into play.

SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is process of improving your online web presence. If let say you search for “computer stores in Dubai” and you cannot find what you are looking for does not mean it’s search engines fault, which In my opinion it’s the responsibility of each business entity not embracing the power of online web presence which I think UAE is a bit fuzzy knowing the advantage of SEO, which I definitely agree with Scott that companies needs SEO but in the other hand, I don’t agree blaming why google can’t give the information that you are looking for.

It’s the same process of offline marketing, companies like here in Dubai spend so much money building in these gigantic brands offline to help potential customers to notice them. Applying that in SEO except of course spending to much money, companies need to comply in search engine guidelines to help search engine like google to crawl, index and process companies website to help search engines to offer a better results for potential customers.
It’s like having a huge billboard ads in the middle of the desert and having fancy website which is not well optimize which will be useless and will not help your customers notice your brand at all.
So yeah SEO is our friend.. and SEO will help you notice your brand:)

Google rocks when it comes to factual information (finding a company website or wikipedia entry or whatever), but type in “boutique hotel in Hong Kong” or “cheapest flights from Dubai to London” and you will get page after page of spam - spam that has been well optimised to make it to the front page of google search results.

I do agree, that is one of many strong point of search engine. I also agree that spam is the main problem of search engine but it also helps them to enhance their algorithm in terms of processing and detecting spammy websites.

In my opinion in any form of life there is always an opposite of good which is bad and SPAMMY website is one of the bad side or should I say Blackhat Side :P.

Regarding your query about “boutique hotel in Hong Kong” or “cheapest flights from Dubai to London” which I agree that you are getting some spam results but not all. I suggest try this link
http://www.google.com/support/websearch/bin/answer.py?answer=136861 for advance search or help google for better search results by reporting websites that you think it’s spam or does not even related to your search query.

Link for Spam report: http://www.google.com/contact/spamreport.html

What you really want when you type “computer stores in Dubai” is to find a great blog post or newspaper article, written by somebody who knows and cares, listing the city’s best computer stores. Sure, someone like CompuMe or Jumbo Electronics could spend more money on getting to the front page, but then, so can anyone, including some random page of googlebait whose entire business model is to get clicks from google searches and surround useless information with ads.

My answer here is to find the right SEO firm/people to optimize their product and to leverage the power of Online presence. In SEO it’s always the right firm/people, I believe that anyone can do SEO, but it takes an expert to implement it successfully for better success and profit.

This is where Google is getting slowly ruined. There is real, serious, money in getting among the top ten links, and wherever there is money, rent-seeking spambots and general uselessness will follow.

I believe Google is still #1 it helps us in our day-to-day life in anything we need from finding people, weather forecast, news, currency and a lot more.

Let say in a facts that Google populate spam links when we try search some queries, compare google to yaho, msn, live and other search engines that are currently existing throughout the internet, I think google is still far better than the other in terms of web results..

@Richard Swan

I totally Agree

Dave from Click-Dubai.Com

I also agree but one thing that I don’t quite agree which is

If companies have employed at least textbook SEO best practices, rest assured they’ll be on the top SE results on their respective industry searches.

Not all context within SEO book gives you better results and better return, it can help you at least to start with but of course all of this are debatable. SEO is big SEM is bigger so i think it really depends how you will apply it.

I hope my comment makes sense.:P as I am typing which comes to my mind so please bear with me. I will also try to make a post into my SEO Dubai blog about this.
update: and I did

Of course thanks to you Tom Gara, it’s so nice to have this kind of healthy blog discussion about SEO stuff.

That’s why I recommend all SEM peeps around UAE should organize meet-ups or put up a group to discuss how we can promote digital marketing within the UAE.

Kudos given to Richard & Dave!

I was talking to my friend earlier about search engine optimization, he then asks me how to use it and how to do it because he would like to join in a upcoming SEO Contest locally in the Philippines and he don’t know where to start. So I told him I’d rather make a post in this blog to save him time thinking, remembering what we’re discussing and he can comeback here and read again my post if he miss anything.

For me, to know SEO does not need any special expertise like doctors, engineers, accountant that have or need to have a degree qualification. SEO is just simple as 1,2,3 if you will just give an importance to it and you just need to consider all the basics and monitor and apply the rest that you’ve learn on your monitoring.

So what is the basic SEO?

If you are optimizing your website into different search engine, it’s a must to learn the search engines guidelines first on how your website can become search engine friendly and to aware your self which one to use and not to be mislead by reading ebooks on other websites. I will list below the 3 major search engine guidlines which is google, yahoo and msn so better to start with google with their guidelines

search engine optimization guidelines

how google crawl your website

beware about paid links

and others

yahoo has also a guidelines for webmaster about

how to get listed in yahoo

how to improve search engine ranking in yahoo

and of course MSN

webmaster guidelines how to index your site for live search

Once you get to know search engine rules, you must need to follow and obey them. Knowing the rules and guidelines of different search engines, you can now get an idea how to get index your website.

So What’s Next?

After knowing the search engine guidelines the next step is the structure of your website and it’s called Onpage Optimization. The next important thing in SEO is how you will optimize your website for different purposes such as user friendlyness, usability, browser compatibilty, css & xhtml valid, canonicalization urls, basic redirection and more, anyway I will list it below so you can know more which part of onpage optimization you need to focus more.
note: below are not listed by importance, I just write what I think and give a short information on it.

Basic Redirection - www or non www

Filenames Canonicalization - urls that can be read by user easily and not just id’s

Website Stucture - (tables or tabless, xhtml and css valid, minimal flash object, headings like h1 to h6)

Tags Tags & Tags - (meta’s such as title, keyword description and countries ), alt tags in links and img alt tags

keywords / key phrases Density - keywords / key phrases over your content and other parts of your website

Quality Content - so we all know that Content is a King.

Sitemap - you know what this is right?

I am going discuss the above list on my next post if I have time to do it, and because this blog post is far from ending it I am trying to make it as simple as I can.

So after Onpage what is Next?

When your done doing your onpage optimization the next step is to market your website through internet and it’s called off page optimization. This part is a bit tricky for a start but once you know how to do it then it will be easy for you because you will do this over and over again. You will just remember that your creativity will come in this process the more clever you are the better. So how will you promote your website here are some list.

Social Media Tools - Promoting through Digg,Youtube Twitter, Propeller, Linkedin,Facebook and more.. just start searching and you will see more like millions.

Link Building via commenting, directory, rss, blogposting, forum posting, articles submission and more.

Viral Post - make an article or a blog post that will make a buzz like demo camp dubai or wordpress meet-up in dubai.

So the last process is monitor all the proces that you made and once you see the result go back to onpage optimization and tweak your website as per your analysis and apply the offpage optimization again.

It’s easy right? You just need to be passionate on it and of course just what nike said JUST DO IT! so happy optimization from SEO Dubai.

The credit crunch is affecting everyone because of the financial crisis acts as a chain and it affects around the world. In UAE, especially in Dubai, large companies have gone into administration in the past months. Taking your business to the next level is a highly risky in the current situation, however if your business know how to advertise in a better place than TV’s , radio’s and newspapers, this would generate more leads to you’re struggling company that needs to make ends meet.

The most important investment in any online business can make, is ensuring their website becomes the best it can be, by utilizing SEO (Search Engine Optimization. This is already proven by many, to have the best results in generating customer interest than any other way of advertising and in return the success of your online business will soar.

Why will you spend money in Search Engine Optimization in Dubai?

One of the main factor of a well planned and executed SEO marketing campaign is that it gives a far better (ROI) return on investment than traditional marketing techniques that I mention above, this because you target users very carefully in a strategy way. It ensures these users are most likely to be looking for a service(s) such as yours because of the search terms that you are targeting for. Thus there is a greater chance of these users converting into leads and increased your profit as a business company. Because of this “Value” for money aspect to Search Engine Optimization, organizations can turn to internet marketing as a way of channeling their existing marketing budget online and into a more fruitful area.

Only one thing that doesn’t seem to have been affected by the credit crunch is people who are using the internet. There has been no noticeable drop off in the amount of users utilizing search engines and so now more than ever is the time when raising your business online profile through ethical “White Hat” search engine optimization could prove a very profitable move.

As users become ever more careful about where and how they spend their money, your website needs to stand out from the crowd in order to attract their business, design, layout, and navigation can play a big part in this along with specific optimization for search engines. A good Search Engine Optimization company can provide a package which looks at all aspects of your online presence, from researching your target customers and what they normally type into search engines, to making sure your website meets W3C accessibility guidelines so that your site doesn’t miss out on potential customers.

Who yah gonna call when credit is tight?

If you need some help with your search engine optimization but you still feel the credit crisis and you cannot employ a fulltime SEO, you may want to consider hiring a SEO freelancer in Dubai. SEO Dubai dot Org are much less expensive than a larger company who are doing search engine optimization in Dubai and you can usually be assured of more personal assistance. If you are planning out several campaigns, working with an SEO consultant or freelancer is certainly more cost effective.

Your business enjoying front page results listings for the major search engines could be the very thing which helps you to beat the credit crunch and a professional SEO Consultant in Dubai can develop a dynamic strategy to help achieve this with your business.

DemoCamp Dubai 4 was ended with fun & exciting night, thanks for the organizer argaam & spinbits, even though I’m not feeling well last night I still manage to come over and check the demos that presented by different company. I was invited to do a live blogging in the democamp but because of my head is cracking & aching I just preferred to watched the demos, apology to rida:)…

So Yes! I decided to make a review of the demos that presented last night and here it is… click read more for more info.
Integrating iphone application by restate.ae - I think it’s a great move for spinbits to do an integration of their website restate.ae to a mobile application. Rida and Cloves Jr, 2 guys who founded the spinbits presented this demos to us.

Benefits
1. The restate.ae iphone application itself can search for sale and for rent properties in Dubai, it has a good search filter which you can see the result in real time.

2. Another feature is contacting the property agent directly through your iphone, you can send SMS, Call agent & I think the other one is contact agent which the agent will receive the message through the control panel of restate.ae browser. So everything is “at the tip of your finger“.

3. A user friendly interface. Yes! that’s what I can see, a few clicks and you can check the availabilities of the properties in Dubai.

Downside
This Downside “thingy” does not mean to criticize the demos, but to help in a such a way of developing/presenting the application to the next level.

1. Only in iphone??(!@$ - someone ask rida, if the application is only for iphone and he replied yes!.. I think that’s is one weakness of the mobile apps that they are doing, it’s only support iphone and not other mobile companies like Nokia, Blackberry, Samsung, HTC and other mobile companies but of course we are looking forward to see your apps supporting different mobile.

2. Adding Properties through iphone - I don’t know if I miss this but I think it would be nice if property agents can login through their iphone and add properties in a real time.

StartUp Database by StartUpArabia
This demo presented by Mr. Moh’d Marwan Meddah has a good impact to the Arab world. He receives a lot of compliments to the audience and I really like it, this breaks the silence of the democamp last night, but let see what is the benefits and the downside of it.

Benefits
1. For me my first reason in my Advantage list why startupArabia is welcoming by the Online Arab community is because of the awareness on how the internet can help individual Arab to make for their living or to prepare, choose the right career in the internet world.

2. Database overall is great for those people who are looking for a company who wants to finance or fund their project. If they are one of those who want to startup a business, they can check some successful entrepreneurs in the startuparabia

3. Another good thing is Marwan made this project not for a living hence he made this project to help people around the middle east countries to startup a business. I think the only thing that his getting is the adsense revenue :).. which maybe handles his domain and hosting cost..

Downside
This Downside “thingy” does not mean to criticize the demos, but to help in a such a way of developing/presenting the application to the next level.

1. I think the downside of the Database Directory of StartupArabia can be the next Spam ground for people. Because it’s a wiki base application, people can add edit any information within the database. I think it’s ok for now to accept the changes but i hope in the future you need to have a per approval listing so you can monitor what information that you are getting..

2. I want to ask marwan lastnight about this organization who finance projects if they only accept arab people or they also accept other people instead, but I think it’s not relevant to the discussion so I shut my mouth- up..

E-Mapia Online location based marketplace - by Murshed
People might think this is just a nonsense idea, a common marketplace website but Murshed who presented Emapia make this as a big deal. In every aspects of the application it is well planned and well executed. By integrating google maps application into their service, they made a marketplace which has a main feature of google maps.

Benefits
1. It supports arabic text - of course this is great don’t you think?:)
2. Zooming Facilities and default zooming level
3. Easy Navigation with search filter
4. A new way of presenting Online Market Place

Downside
This Downside “thingy” does not mean to criticize the demos, but to help in a such a way of developing/presenting the application to the next level.

1. five items for every user - In my opinion this will be one weakness of Emapia, users can only add 5 items. Mushed was telling that they restrict user for adding 5 items only per account to control the spam in the website. I think it’s not the right decision to do it, instead of people likes the website and wants to add, help, contribute the website you are controlling them by restricting their capabilities as your user. Instead of restricting user you can do the following to control the spam.

Captcha tools

2 user authentication

mobile authentication

per approval via email, browser or even mobile

5 items a day and not 5 items per account

if the above does not fit, you can monitor the ads from time to time.

2. Premium Account is not a good idea - take a note that ebay, amazon and I think souq.com does not require payment to add their listing. because in that way you are taking away the freedom of your user.

But as a whole you made a great job for doing such a wonderful web application.

w2task Time management application by Silviu Bojica
A twitter mate Silviu Bojica made a great job in his demo about w2task a web application where users can register online, create their own business (company) and projects, than attach efforts to them. In return the users will be able to track their own/team efforts and time spent on a particular project (time sheets) and invoice their customers. I think his a bit shy or I can say not prepared presenting his demo, because while listening to him

Benefits
1. It’s free and it will be an open source soon!
2. user friendly
3. Integrates to mobile application

Downsides
1. Not Manageable by time but that is in his list..
2. Notifications.
3. and more work to do Silviu! - Because it’s a new way of web apps, I think he needs to think some pointest buildin a web apps.. like Why w2task, some, what are the advantage, the difference from the other.. something like that. But you made a good job!Goodluck!

There you go my insights to the demos. Tariqq also added that in march this year there will be a DemoCamp Saudi Arabia and hopefully there will be more demos to present.. I am just wishing that someone can sponsor us to attend on the DemoCamp.

By the way comments is appreciated..

After my last post about “twitter tools that you must have”, here is my next topic which is 5 reasons why I think twitter is great tool for business.

First, oi! What is Twitter?

Twitter is an instant messaging made available to the public and you can talk about as much as anything with a limited of 140 characters. It began in 2006 and become a massive following since then.

There is no doubt that twitter is one of the Hot Social Networking website right now and you all know that if you are a twitterers, that’s why I made this post to let you know why twitter is great tool for your business.

Building a relationship to the right audience.

Of course before anything else, it is advisable to look for a right audience and create a good relationship. Twitter is a massive community and I bet you can find the right audience by following them and ask them to follow you in return. Letting them know who you are and what do you do to tweet rather than blasting business through twitterers. Talk to people first, answer some question if someone ask you, basically interact with others.

This first reason allows you to communicate directory to your customers as well as other field in your niche/ business model..

Attracting New Customers

Every time someone followed you, you can see a potential new client, this is another reason why twitter is good for your business because they can communicate to you directly and ask you anything related to your products and the good thing is you can reply them in a short period of time. You can also add existing customer and ask them to tweet some testimonial message about your product or services, and for that reason, other people will see you as a legit and a good provider.

Brand Presence

It started with the large media company like CNN, The New York Times and Al Jazeera to use twitter as a model to adopt a push communication with the audience. Primarily news organizations feed headlines and breaking news, sometimes with links, which does add value for people who want an easy way to track the news.

While the model dispels the myth that all social media is about a conversation, brand presence works well enough, provided the organization is large enough to have its own following (or maybe open to internal communication made public).

So if you are already a branded company and want to get more presence in the internet, you should use twitter as a medium tool to interact with your audience.

Improving a Business Model

Another great thing about twitter is not only getting customers & converts them to profit, as a company you can also get something like tips, strategy and other resources to improve you services or products. By following other company or twitterers who has the same field as you, you can share each other ideas to develop not only you as a twitterers as well as the company.

Learn, Share & Meet

For me the last but not the least why twitter is great tool for business is learning, sharing and meeting with other fellow twitters. This reason will give you directly confidence building your product online or even outside the internet world.

After learning and sharing with each other’s idea about your product or services that you offer, some twitter fanatic are building a twitter community where you can meet & socialize with other people. This is a great reason, because this people that you are reaching is the best way to spread your business offline as well as online, vital marketing will be needed for this.

I just have one twitter account and you can find me here. I use it for a mix of fun, blog information, updates, and short messages to friends.

Give it a shot. If you’re small or big company and need to keep several people updated, I think you’ll find it useful.

If you are a twitterholic and If you love the micro-blogging platform Twitter as much as I do. I’ve put together a list of twitter tools, plug-ins and apps designed for us Twitterholics.. If you are interested go and continue reading.

TwittAd (link) allows Twitter users to monetize their account by accepting advertising on the background image of their Twitter user profile. You decide the duration and price advertisers pay for exposure and get paíd for every hour you serve the ad.

TwitterFox (link) is a Firefox extension that notifies you of your friends’ status on Twitter and lets you make posts from your browser status bar. It also allows you to switch between multiple Twitter accounts in one click. This is my #1 must-have, deal-breaker, cannot live without Twitter plug-in.

Classify Twitter Users (link)is a script that allows you to classify Twitter users and decide whether they are worth following based on their friends, followers and post ratios. Another Greasemonkey app, it’s a great tool to help you weed out the Twitter spammers and fan boys from the socially healthy.

Retweet (link)This is an application designed for use with the Greasemonkey Firefox plug-in. It allows you to append a retweet button to the end of each Twitter entry to encourage your followers to retweet your posts.

TweetBeep (link)is just like having Google Alerts for Twitter. It enables you to keep track of conversations that mention you, your products or your company via email. You can even keep track of who’s tweeting your website or blog. It’s a great tool for online reputation management and you don’t even have to be a Twitter user to benefit from it. TweetBeep is another one of my personal *must haves*.

Twitter Grader (link)measures the reach and authority of a Twitter user, calculated by the pace of their updates, the completeness of their profile, their number of followers and the network power of those followers.

Mr Tweet (link)is another big favorite of mine. Similar to LinkedIn , it looks through your extended network and makes suggestions to help you build effective relationships on Twitter. For example, which of your followers should you be following in return? Who are the most influential people you should be following? Who are your followers following?

Twistori (link)I have a real soft spot for this one. One of the developers is Amy Hoy, one of my favorite speakers from Webstock 2008 and a goth geek to boot. Twistori is a social experiment that taps into the Twitter conversations revolving around life’s central activities: Love, Hate, Think, Believe, Feel, Wish. You can click on any of these emotions and witness a live feed of Tweets that use them. It’s voyeuristic and utterly compelling.

Twuffer (link)is a Twitter buffer. It allows Twitter users to compose a líst of future tweets, and schedule their release. Twuffer is ideal for making hourly, daily or monthly announcements or send post-dated birthday greetings or reminders to people about upcoming events. It’s also perfect if you’re the type of person who wants to give the impression that you don’t ever sleep.

TwitPic, (link)as the name suggests, is a photo sharing tool for Twitter. When logged in, it allows you to upload photos and post them with comments as a Tweet. It works with a range of Twitter clients such as Twitterific, Twhirl and MobileTwitter and stores all your photos in a single location with updated viewing stats. As far as Twitter image sharing goes, this is king for reliability.

There you go my top 10 list of twitter tools. Happy Tweeting!

Update:

11. Twilert, (link) for google like alerts - suggest by hervecuviliez

If you are looking for a SEO company in Dubai you need to know what to be consider on choosing a SEO firm. Since the financial crisis, demand in SEO expert is increasing. Almost all the website are requiring to optimize their website to get a higher ranking in different search engine. Site owners specially in Real Estate agency in Dubai are trying to find the best SEO Dubai company that they could deal with. Since most of them are new in search engine optimization and want to increase their traffic using SEO, most of them still don’t know how to choose the best SEO company in Dubai.

To begin with, if you are looking for a SEO company in Dubai, do not be so excited by the things that they offer. There is something to be consider choosing a SEO firm and depends on the requirements that you are looking for. This list of the requirements will not only help you in choosing SEO Company in Dubai but you will also be more contented with the result that they will provide you.

Before anything else the first that needs to be considered is the objective of the SEO Company. There are numerous objectives that SEO companies use in order to accomplish the traffic that they require for a website. One of an example is using SEO black-hat method like Doorway pages, Cloaking and Hidden keywords. This will make you gain rankings for a short period of time but it will not be accepted in major search engines like Google. Once Google finds this black-hat method that a SEO company is using, it automatically removes the website from their data center.

SEO Company in Dubai that use these techniques are engaging in Black Hat SEO and you must avoid them like the affliction as they will get your site banned in Google.

Another requirement to be considered in looking for a “SEO Dubai Company” is the results that it can give your website to rank in search engine. This will have to deal with the search engines that the SEO Company had created popular searches with. Major search engines like Google, Yahoo & MSN are better than smaller ones. You should also consider the keywords or key phrases that the SEO Company is using to rank your website. There are a lot of programs to check if a keyword or key phrases is receiving a large volume of traffic. You should also consider that when a SEO Company ranks your website it should maintained the ranking position in a period of time. You can also check the results made by the SEO Company on previous projects. The website as a whole should be attractive for the possible audience. It should also maintain ranking for some time. Lastly, make sure that the website that the SEO Company is showing you is really their work. Look for their logo to confirm their work on it. Don’t be fooled with SEO Company who claimed a higher ranking website with a specific keyword or key phrases in search engine when in a real world they haven’t worked it yet or it’s not their worked.

The next requirement that you should consider is the support and the reports that the SEO Company gives to their client. Look for a SEO Company that is able to show reports on the ranks from the major search engines on a weekly or a monthly basis. You should be given detailed individual and overall report as well as the overview of the previous and present results of the ranking. Aside from these, the SEO Company should also be responsible in giving you recommendations on the steps that they need to do in order to maintain or further improve the ranking of the website. The work of the SEO Company does not end, instead they continually provide help and monitoring on your website to be able to produce the traffic that you aim.

And last thing that you should also consider is the price that you will pay for the SEO Dubai services. If you prefer to go with known and reliable SEO Company, be prepared to pay for higher fees. You can also find a new incoming SEO Company that promises to provide the same output. In cases like this, you should consider that there is a risk that you should take. Lastly, consider the references that the SEO Company worked with. They should be able to give you a list of their past clients who were satisfied with their services.

As a whole, in order to find the SEO Company for your site, you must be satisfied with the results that they made for their other clients. They must communicate with you well and will work on your request. There must be a good communication between the two of you. SEO companies are almost everywhere, choose wisely and choose well.

That’s it I hope this post will nourish you, and give you an idea how to choose a SEO Company in Dubai.

We came around 6:40 PM in the restaurant and matt are still not there so we just introduced ourselves to those people who are there already and some of them are Fouad & Rida who plan and manage the meetup, DrBaher the man behind the CloudAppers, Shuja Shabandri from FlipCorp, Abraham Antony a student from BITS Pilani, Geo Morjane, Bassem Jarkas, Mohammed Al Safi, Paul Castle on of the author of shufflegazine and his wife Karla (Thanks Mr. & Mrs. Castle for the complimentary magazine:)) and to those people who I forgot to mention here, please forgive me as I am not good in names.

After a few minutes Matt the founder of wordpress came and he told us that he was late because the cab brought them in the wrong place instead in Montgomerie Golf club.:) MATT how many golf club have you went through before finding the Montgomerie club??:( The group was excited and so we started the conversation.

Some of the interesting stories that I can still remember about the group conversation was the on progress work of WordPress 2.8 where dozens of things that got tabled during 2.7 due to time constraints. He also talk about how he started WordPress, the new 2.7 interface which is very COOL and everyones like it, and other question and answer portion:) which we like it a lot.
