Technorati Tags: ricerche personalizzate, seo, google

Del.icio.us | StumbleUpon | TechnoNotizie | OkNotizie | Digitta

Office 2008 home & students for Mac. Changing Product key

A couple of years ago, after switching to a Mac and bought immediately Apple "Office Solution" - declared as the best on the market - I sooner realized that it was a real mess incompatible solution for a guy coming from a Windows world.

At those time, I was having just one personal Mac, so I didn't experience any problem, but some months ago (yeah I know it's a bit later to post this) I bought a MacPro laptop as well and when I installed it I didn't take care about the product ID used during the installation process.

Unfortunately, once I finished the installation, and I started to use contemporary both Mac, Office claimed me a duplicate product ID usage. Ok, it has been my fault, but what doing now? Reinstall everything? Maybe, but why waste time if you can solve it just deleting a couple of files?

So the solution you need if you installed two or more version of Office using the same product ID is deleting both these files:

1) /users/?????/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/Office 2008/Microsoft Office 2008 Settings.plist

2) /Applications/Microsoft Office 2008/Office/OfficePID.plist

Technorati Tags: office, mac, installation ID

<a rel="nofollow" href="http://del.icio.us/post?url=http://blog.teammatelabs.com/post/2009/12/07/office-2008-mac-change-installation-id.aspx&title=Office 2008 home & students for Mac.

Io dico no, quale?

Technorati Tags: google webmaster tool, site speed

Del.icio.us | StumbleUpon | TechnoNotizie | OkNotizie | Digitta

How Google ranks PDF: final conclusions

Last 26th of October I started a test to monitor how PDF documents are crawled and indexed by search engines.

The test aimed to let me understand the following things about PDF documents like:

Do Microsoft Word® headers (normally used into a professional document) make a difference?

How much the Keyword Density in the document impact on its ranking?

How much document properties (Title, Author, Comments and Keywords) influence the indexing?

After just one week, Google started to show some concrete results. The other search engines are still looking around; only Ask return a couple of result, but anything that I can talk about.

Scope of this document is to highlight the fluctuation that the different PDF documents made (13 in total) made day-by-day.

Those are the first – most interesting – results I collected during the past weeks for the main document returned by a SERP generated using the URK “seiunamicone”.

Followed by the hidden results, those one that can be seen expanding the hidden menu (click on plus symbol).

I’ve been monitoring the SERP for a while, and apart from the first days where it has been continuous fluctuations, now the results seem to be stabilized.

Proposing a lot of images it would probably have been muddle-headed, however I can assure you that a lot of changes took place, and I presume that looking at the SERP tomorrow, something new could be highlighted.

Just to give you an example outside the above picture, on 3rd of November the third result was a document called PDF-test-without-headers-KD43.pdf – my test n. 11. To be honest have shown it there get me confused e I wasn’t able to figure out how it was possible.
That’s the reason for which I included a graph collecting the different SERPs changes.

This is the full graph.

Whilst this is a graph with the documents that just take part on the SERP during the period in which I monitored it.

Let’s analyze it altogether, but first let me remind you something about the documents generated. I assumed a KWD of the URK “seiunamicone” split between the page (42%) and the document properties (56%) and fake headers when H1 and H2 have been created using pure emphasis instead of Word styles.

The first PDF to be indexed has been a document called Test 7 (PDF-test-without-header2-KD100.pdf). This document contains an H1 made using Word styles, a fake H2 – just emphasized text – with a KD of 100%. Just after some days, this document has been completely refused by Google SERP. Today is in the index but sit nowhere.
A snugly result for test number 5, 28% KD and one header, whilst no index at all for test 3, 10 or 13 for example.

If we would like to analyze only the first three results (first one and it’s aggregate) plus the first result shown when expanding hidden results we got the following picture.
Positive results has been collected for test number 12, always been present in the SERP and now stable on position 1 from about one week, test number 1.1, with some fluctuation, but now stable on position 2, and finally test 11, that apart some daily disappear has always been on position three.

So what makes the difference for these documents?

I almost sure Google is able to interpret the RTF code contained into PDF document (most probably doing a sort of reverse engineering). This sounds like strong assert (and maybe it is, so please take it just as my personal opinion) but it’s the only explanation I was able to find when I answered to the question “Why these?”

Analyzing the SERPs, I saw that after a KWD factor, the headers get their own importance., so, today what could be the answer about the following question?

What are the predominant factors that influence a PDF indexing into Google?

If today I should frankly answer to this dilemma, I would probably got through with the following bulleted point:

Document properties usage. Adding the keyword(s) into the document properties (Title, Subject e Keywords – Comments are ignored. We can even use the Author field, but looks like to be used for different purposes, isn’t it?)

Keyword density. A sufficient number of keyword in strategic part of the document – as per HTML pages – results in a better-optimized document, especially when headers are used. But we remember of another important aspect, such as document length and size that after a certain dimension (100k) results in a non-crawled text.

Header usage. Inserting keywords into the header 1 (made with Word styles, not emphasizing the text) boost the document and help it for a better indexing. Eventually use an H2 sounds good, but during the tests I noticed that use both of them don’t get any extra advantage.

Keyword proximity. Whenever the headers are not used, keyword proximity plays an important role.

I believe I don't forget anything and I hope you enjoyed reading this post.

Del.icio.us | StumbleUpon | TechnoNotizie | OkNotizie | Digitta

Come Google indicizza i PDF: conclusioni finali

Keyword density.

Keyword proximity.

Del.icio.us | StumbleUpon | TechnoNotizie | OkNotizie | Digitta

Google raises new suggestion about rankings?

Google Engineer Matt Cutts in an interview has recently told how Google is going to rank web sites in the future, in particular he has hinted that ranking would somehow be affected by the loading time taken by a website.
So SEO won't be the only "trick" on which a web site can rely; magic will be now diverted to different factors such as the real capacity of a webmaster (or web agency) to make a smart web site (in terms of code efficiency) as well as about a good hosting company with enough bandwidth and server ram (just to cite a couple of important factors).

Cutts revealed the existence of a new plug-in for Firefox, called Page Speed test, that will be integrated into the well known Firebug, which will add a new tab that aims to measure the page speed across a list of different factors.
As most of SEO and Webmaster out there, I performed some test as well, and I've been surprised to see in the issue list an item regarding the caching.

As you probably already know, most web pages include resources that change infrequently, such as CSS files, image files, JavaScript files, PDF, and so on. These resources take time to download over the network, which increases the time it takes to load a web page.

HTTP caching allows these resources to be saved (cached) somewhere by a browser (locally according to its settings) or a proxy, making the download faster. Once a resource is cached, a browser can refer to the first available local copy instead of download it again during the next session.
Using cache means with the lottery reducing round-trip time by eliminating numerous HTTP requests for the required resources, which substantially reduce the total payload size of the responses, and significantly reduce the bandwidth and hosting costs for your site.

So it seems caching is one aspect on which every web player should take care. Some problems occur if we think to the tons of web site that still doesn't use server-side technology, which allow to control practically everything and set up the response header in a very easy way, or people whose don't have direct access to the server configuration to set up the header in just a couple of clicks (that is not the META tag in the HTML Page like a friend of mine reported me today, despite it's sometimes involved).

HTML Meta Tags and HTTP Headers

Just because I talk about them, it's better to spend some more words to clarify my previous statement. It's true that HTML authors can put Expire tag in a document’s head section, but in the specific case this meta tag is not very effective. That’s because it's only honored by a few browser caches (which actually read the HTML) and not by proxies (which almost never read the HTML in the document).
And if you are considering to use the Pragma, it won’t necessarily cause the page to be kept fresh.

On the other hand, true HTTP headers give you a lot of control over how both browser caches and proxies handle your web page. They can’t be seen in the HTML, and are usually automatically generated by the Web server.

The solution is...

I though to many different solutions to the problem, but none of them was directly applicable to a static web page, and it's embedded resources like CSS and Javascript.

The only good thing I was able to find actually is a solution for external downloadable files like PDF, PPT or document in general, that may be eventually requested with a simple Javascript code that use an XMLHttpRequest whilst contextually modify the Response header. Unfortunately, this solution is valid only for internal links, because any external resource that points directly to the file will automatically use the header that has been set up by default on the server.

So, if this caching will really become an issue to pursue, it will be beneficial for all of you choose an hosting company or develop your web page using a server side technology that will allow you to change the headers in a very easy way.

Before to conclude, I just report another interesting paper released by Yahoo! on how to speed-up web pages.

Technorati Tags: http, header, caching, google

Del.icio.us | StumbleUpon | TechnoNotizie | OkNotizie | Digitta

How Google (and other SEs) crawl and ranks PDF files?

There is one common thing that link web 2.0 users: the necessity to take part of this new fantastic world contributing to it, inserting web pages, picture, documents, comments and so on.

So, it’s not rare to see emerging web sites containing tons of new material rather than a forum at the top of the SERPs. And it’s not rare to see different type of documents rather than a standard web page. Documents like a Word file, Power point presentation, PDF etc.

Search engines love text. So if you write a document with some special formatting, that doesn’t fit well into a web page or contains some graphics that must be preserved, you can publish over the web converting it to a PDF file, and let it accessible to the entire world.

Search engines are smart enough to crawl your web pages and index (normally) all the link and documents contained. Google started to index PDF documents later in 2001 so they are not completely new to this kind of stuff, but recently they enhanced the quality and the user experience introducing the "Quick View" PDFs feature.
The reason why Google developed it was due to poor quality of the “View as HTML” feature, originally developed to "translate" a file into a document readable directly into the browser (unless searchers weren’t interested in opening it into different applications after downloading it).

Unfortunately the "View as HTML" feature isn’t perfect and often the layout proposed doesn’t respect the original one. These kind of problems no longer exist thanks to "Quick View" which has changed its approach to opening PDF files, opening the documents directly into the browser whilst keeping the formatting intact.

But, well formatted or not, a PDF document – as any other web page – should be optimized before being shown in the SERP. Having looked into research papers, that contained possible indicators on how to properly optimize a PDF document, I was unable to find anything really useful.

Since I’m aware (are you?) Google is particularly interested in details and quality, I decided to spend some time to create a test case to evaluate many different combinations of the same PDF document to understand which factors really influences the PDF ranking.

The test has been published on a recently registered domain, so I can entirely appreciate the results that I will collect from this test.

To stay updated about this test, or to simply have a look at it, point your web browser to my PDF ranking and indexing test.

Technorati Tags: google, pdf ranking, test

Del.icio.us | StumbleUpon | TechnoNotizie | OkNotizie | Digitta

Yahoo!

“We are committing our resources and efforts to our core areas of focus, including improving the search experience and relevancy of our ads to increase user engagement and ROI for advertisers, and as a result, have decided to exit Search Submit. We have stepped up innovation in Search Marketing, recently rolling out search retargeting, Rich Ads in Search and improved matching technology, and in Consumer Search, with enhancements like the new search results page. These enhancements deliver value, control, innovation and relevance to our advertisers, leading to increased ROI.

“Yahoo! will exit Search Submit at the end of 2009. Yahoo! is providing those advertisers affected by the decision a sufficient lead time to assist in the transition. In addition, Yahoo! has recently announced a series of important enhancements to its Search advertising business and will work closely with many Search Submit advertisers to provide them with search solutions that will benefit their businesses.

Technorati Tags: yahoo!, inclusioni a pagamento, ppc

Del.icio.us | StumbleUpon | TechnoNotizie | OkNotizie | Digitta
