We are commonly asked to perform link building services for client sites, and many opt for packages that include article submission to article directories. Many experts in the SEO industry have argued that it’s no longer worth submitting to article directories, but we think there is still value in this old and well-beaten link dev method. Michael Gray over at SearchEngineLand.com offers some insights into article submissions, the quality directory sites to submit to, and whether or not to spend your time on this technique in the first place.

(Pssst: These are also our top five favorite article directory sites, otherwise known as “article repositories”.)

From Michael’s post:

While attempting to file a reconsideration request - also commonly known as a reinclusion request - at Google Webmaster Tools today for a client, I noticed that the link to the reconsideration request was no longer in it’s regular place - or anywhere to be found.

After doing a search online for the url of the form, I found it…. only to get this error message once I finished writing the request, and hitting the submit button:

Does this mean we’ll no longer be able to submit a reinclusion request? Does this mean there are SO MANY people trying to file for reconsideration (because of crazy recent SERP fluctuations), that the form is being inundated?

If you haven’t already, please read my introduction to 301 redirects post for a full understanding of the 301 redirect using your .htaccess file.

Redirecting Entire Websites:

redirect 301 / http://www.yoursite.com/

In the above example(s), the first “/” indicates that everything from the root level of the site down (to the folder name if specified) should be redirected. This is an excellent remedy for ensuring that no traffic or rankings are lost if you have to change your domain name.

Search engine spiders & 301 redirects

The 301 redirect is the safest way to preserve your search engine rankings. On it’s next visit, the search engine spider (a.k.a.: robot) will obey the new rule in your .htaccess file. The spider doesn’t actually read the .htaccess file, but recognizes and follows the instructions from the server.

Usually, in the next search engine update the old file name and path should replaced with the new one. Sometimes you may see alternating old/new file names during an update transition period, along with possible fluctuations in rankings as things settle. This is typical of search engine updates and may take a few weeks for things to settle. You should be aware that any change you make has risks - whether it’s altering page text, moving or renaming pages, or simply changing domain names. Search engine rules change as often as the weather, so stay updated in case the 301 redirect becomes a liability! (Join our feed, hint, hint!)

Changing old domain names - be patient.

When changing domain names and using a 301 redirect, it’s advisable to leave the old domain name and files in place for a few weeks to give the search engines time to index your changes.

Also, don’t forget to notify any website(s) linking to you of the domain name change as soon as possible. Once you remove the old domain name, any links pointing to your old site will have no effect on the ranking of your new site - so get ‘em changed over!!

Happy Valentines Day! Here’s my special gift to you:

About The 301 Redirect - A How To Tutorial

If you have decided to move a whole website, or move a whole directory or folder, or just move a page, then a 301 redirect is the way to do it.

Or perhaps you’ve renamed a page but don’t want to lose the traffic from people who’ve bookmarked the old page name, or worse, loose search engine listings and traffic pointing to the old named page. The answer, again, is…

The only “Google approved redirect“, - a 301 redirect. For the purposes of this tutorial, we will only be discussing 301 redirects using the .htaccess file method for use on LINUX systems running on Apache servers. If you’re not sure of what type server your hosting package offers, contact your hosting company. Here are various other non-htaccess methods of implementing a 301 redirect, such as Coldfusion, ASP, ASP.net, PHP, JSP (Java), CGI PERL, or Ruby On Rails (ROR).

What is a .htaccess file?

A .htaccess file is: a file typically located in the root (main) directory of your website. Your web server checks this file when a visitor or search engine spider requests a web page from your website. The .htaccess file contains specific instructions for how to handle certain types of requests, including security, redirection issues, missing pages and how to handle specific types of errors.

What is a 301 redirect?

301 = PERMANENT. (This doesn’t mean permanent as in forever eternity, but permanent as in until you decide to change it again.)
The code “301″ is used for and is interpreted by the Apache server to notify the browser (viewer) or search engine spider that the page(s) has “moved permanently”. The script tells the server the URL of the missing or renamed page(s), then tells the server the new location where to go to.

How do I install a 301 redirect?

Firstly, download the .htaccess file from the root directory of your website. If there is no .htaccess file there, you can simply create one with Notepad or a similar ASCII text editor. Be sure when you name the file that you put the “.” at the beginning of the file name. This file has no suffix for file type - just call it: .htaccess If there is a .htaccess file already in your root directory, and it already contains lines of code, be sure NOT to change any existing code unless you are VERY familiar with the functions of the code.

How To Do a 301 Redirect for Specific Pages

Leave a line or two of space after any current existing code, then create a new line of code EXACTLY like this (using your domain and file names where applicable):

SAMPLE:

redirect 301 /oldFolder/oldPage.htm http://www.yoursite.com/newPage.htm

It’s that easy. Save the file, and upload it back into the root folder of your server to test it out. You can do so by typing in the OLD address of the page you’ve changed/moved/removed. You should immediately be brought to the new page.

NOTE: Make sure NOT to add “http://www.yourdomain.com” to the FIRST part of the code (after ‘301′) - just input the path from the root level of your site to the page name.

Also, looking closely at the example above, note to be sure that you leave a single space between the main elements:

Example:
redirect 301 (the instruction that the page has moved)
SPACE
/oldFolder/oldPage.htm (the original folder path and file name)
SPACE
http://www.yoursite.com/newPage.htm (new path and file name)

Redirecting entire whole folders and websites with 301 redirect

The 301 command is very powerful. You can also redirect entire folders, or even redirect entire web sites - for example when changing domain names.

These videos have been removed from YouTube. It seems for some reason that RichGrad had to remove these videos. Our apologies for any inconvenience.

Want to increase your online sales conversions?

Want to influence your husband to take out the garbage?

The following is a great series of videos that give you the ’science’ of years of research and development on techniques used for ‘getting what you want’, in any situation. Presented by Dr. Robert Cialdini. Videos made available by RichGrad.com.

I have my doubts about the true efficacy of these techniques, but I’m also sure that like anything, if practiced and studied long enough, it may be possible to persuade somewhat unlikely people to behave in a manner which they might otherwise not. Skillfully playing with one’s ego and emotions is not an obvious tangibility that is apparent to the average layperson, making them very vulnerable to it’s effects.

This clearly explains (when you look for it) how the governments of the world, run by power and control hungry elites has been able to manifest the current reality that we have all come to accept as ‘the way it IS’.

When viewing these videos, please note any occasion where or how you have been affected by these techniques - so that you may recognize them and have an awareness that protects you from their influence.

Video #1

Compliance - “Getting what you asked for.”
The idea that we’re not just changing attitudes or opinions, we want to change behavior. It’s the science of getting people to say YES - getting what you ask for. Getting people to DO what you want, rather than just to think about it. Not the ART of persuasion, but the SCIENCE of persuasion.

These 6 questions will be answered in these following video series:

If you have two options to present, which should you present first? A. The more costly one, or B. the less costly one?

Is it better to tell prospects what they stand to GAIN if they move in your direction, or what they stand to LOSE if they don’t?

If you have a new piece of information to offer, is it best to offer it before or after your initial presentation?

If you have a proposition that has strengths and weaknesses, when should you present the weaknesses - early or late in the presentation?

After someone has praised you/your product/organization, what is the most effective thing you can do after you have said thank you?

To arrange for someone to like you, and want to cooperate with you, what is the single most productive thing you can do before you try to influence that person?

Here are the 6 Universal Laws of Influence

These are the 6 rules of human behavior that we can use to categorize and understand the motives that get people to say yes to requests:

Video #2

Principle #1 - Reciprication - “The Good Old Give and Take.”
I am obligated to give you the first form of behavior that you give to me. Obligation. In the context of obligation, people say yes to those they ‘owe’.
“If you do me a favor, I ‘owe’ you one.”
Every human society that trains it’s members to follow the law of reciprocation, has an enormous competitive advantage.
Whenever someone offers thanks for your extended efforts, instead of blowing it off as; “no problem, it was no big deal”, offer “no problem, I’m sure that if I ever needed your help, you’d do the same for me.”

Video #3

Reciprocation of Concessions - When asking a request, if there are two or more options available, always ask for the larger option first. This gives the party the ability to deny the initial request, but by making a concessional offer that is less, the party will feel more likely obligated to concede. Make an outrageous request, then retreat to your actual more moderate desired request.
“If someone has said ‘no’ to you, if you retreat FROM the situation - you lose. If you retreat IN the situation - you win.” If you come back a week later after making a request to make a concession to the original request, the concession will be perceived as a new request. If you make a concessional request immediately after the initial rejection, it is perceived as a concession and is more likely to be accepted.

Principle#2 - Scarcity - “If I Can’t Have It - I Want It.”
When you present an idea/product/service/recommendation/option, you need to explain to your prospect what it is about this that will give them something that they can’t get anywhere else. When you describe these benefits, it is not sufficient to only describe what they will gain because people are more motivated by the idea of losing something than of gaining that very same thing.
People are more interested in formation about what they stand to lose than what they stand to gain, and we are fools if we don’t give them the information they want. Studies show that “in making their projections for the future, managers weighed information about potential losses more heavily than information about potential gains”.
When explaining your positive benefits to your prospects, also explain the UNIQUE benefits they stand to lose if they don’t move in your direction.

Scarcity AND Exclusivity - When scarcity is presented with exclusivity, requests are far more greater to be accepted. EG: “We have heard that there will be a shortage of widgets, and this information was provided exclusively to us by an insider at the Widget Supply Association, and nobody else knows about this.”
Implications: When you get a new piece of information and it supports what you are trying to persuade your prospect toward, your response should be to inform your prospect immediately. The new information is more powerful the newer it is. BUT, provide it in a format of scarcity and exclusivity. Waiting destroys both these advantages.

Video #4

Principle #3 - Authority - “If an Expert Says It, It Must Be True.”
Research shows that the most powerful type of expert authority, is a credible authority, who has KNOWLEDGE and TRUSTWORTHINESS. You need to tell people about your expertise and background BEFORE you try to influence them. Then you have to establish your trustworthiness. In order to establish trustworthiness, it is most effective to present a small drawback or weakness of your proposal, then to overwhelmingly establish the benefits. This way you are perceived as a source of information that is knowledgeable about the pros and cons of the subject, and honest enough to bring the cons to the surface yourself, before you present your strongest arguments. This gets your arguments understood in the context of credibility which makes your strongest arguments shine.

Principle #4 - Commitment and Consistency - “People Are Significantly More Willing To Say Yes To A Request That Is Consistent With What They Have Already Said Or Done.”
This is achieved through Commitment. People are more likely to live up to publicly stated commitments and obligations. Written commitments and obligations are most powerful.

Video #5

Principle #5 - Consensus - “The Power of The Crowd - When People Look To See What Others Are Doing To Help Them Decide What To Do.”
Present the appearance that the masses are acting on your proposal. If you can, in some way try to express your call to action in a manner that conveys that there are also lots of others responding to this call to action. EG: Before: “Operators are waiting. Please call now.” …After: “If operators are busy, please call again.” This creates the perception that there must be masses of people responding to this CTA.

Principle #6 - Liking - “People Prefer To Say Yes To Those They Know And Like.”
Liking flows from positive connections:

Similarities

Compliments

Cooperative Efforts

We like those that like us. We like those that DO like us, and say so. And we like those people who work with us in a cooperative way to achieve success.

Conclusions

The most difficult part of these principles presented above, is remembering to use and apply them in the heat of the moment, in business and personal situations. To combat this, create a small card with these principles written on it, and refer to it before and/or after your presentation.

I am going to utilize these techniques in a new venture we are launching in the next few weeks, I’ll report on how well they work, soon.

If you’re into SEO, then you know the power of a blog. If you’re into blogging, there’s a good chance you use WordPress (like we do - this site!). And if you use WordPress, there’s a good chance you’ve been getting bogus phony user spam registrations from free email services like mail.ru, web.de, buy-24h.net.ru, bigmir.net, yandex.ru, list.ru or one of many others. And you’ve been wondering… “how can I block or stop wordpress blog registration spam?” “Spam bots are trying to register for my WordPress blog - does anyone know of a WordPress plugin to prevent spam user registrations?”

The Spam User Registration Solution - SABRE WordPress Plugin

We just found the perfect WordPress plugin to block or stop spam bot user registration (by Didier Lorphelin). It’s called SABRE (Simple Anti Bot Registration Engine) and “is dedicated to the protection of your blog against automatic registration by spammers.” We just installed it, then very easily set up how we wanted to block the spammers (from a variety of methods), and presto, our registration form is bot tight (hopefully!). WE LOVE THIS PLUGIN and how extensive it is!

What SABRE Anit-Spam Registration Plugin Does

Here’s what the ‘about’ section of the SABRE plugin says it does:

“This modular protection can run a set of unobstrusive controls for a regular user and include a captcha or math test in the registration form. You can choose to include both or one test or let the plugin choose randomly the test.Another possibility is to ask the user to confirm his registration by clicking on a link submitted by mail after he registered. This confirmation must take place within a maximum period of time or the account will become unusable.”

We’ve been using Registration Blacklist from Web-Professor.net to blacklist domains that bots and spammers use, but the drawback is we still get spammed, then we have to update the blacklist with the new spam domain. SABRE is proactive, and prevents the spam before it happens.

Here are some screenshots of the interface, just to give you an idea of how extensive it is.

Stats

Everybody loves stats, and SABRE gives them to you. Find our how many spam bot registrations have been blocked, how many have been allowed, and how many are pending registration (what’s this? you ask…). Yes, you can set a time limit for users to verify their registration, or it gets nixed. - more later.

Captach Options

Have you ever seen a captcha plugin with more options than this? This is the option we chose for our user registration on SEOspring.

Math Test & Other Options

Don’t like captchas? Have your users complete a simple math test instead. Don’t really care and want to mix it up a bit? …have the plugin randomly decide between captcha or math test, and what the math test will be, etc…

I really like the ‘Stealth’ option: “Block if Javascript unsupported”. Why? Because of what this ingenious plugin developer realized - “Consider that a lack of Javascript capabilities is a spambot’s footprint”. So we use that option too.

Then there’s the ‘Confirmation Options’ with the ability to have users confirm their registration with a set amount of days - or it’s bye bye.

Now it’s set, and forget. I hope. I’ll keep you posted and let you know if we find any unwanted intruders lurking on our reg form.

Great job Didier.

One of My Favorite Secret Weapons

Google Alerts is a favorite tool I’ve been using for about a year now. This versatile, simple and
easy to use tool not only helps for building links, but it is also great for relationship building, content ideas and development, research, finding industry or topical news and so much more…

I should note right away that I learned about this tool during a conversation I was having with Eric Ward (link building god) about building links for a contest I was running. He mentioned it to me as a way to determine if my press releases had been picked up. I quickly realized the power of this free and easy to use tool, now I’m going to share the secret powers if this nasty little weapon with you…

To understand it’s power you first need to know what it does, so let me show you how Google Alerts works.

How Google Alerts Works

What It Does

Simply, Google Alerts sends you an email notification when NEW web sites appear at the top of Google search results for any keyword you specify.

Ohhhhh I can hear your cerebral wheels spinnin’ already…. But first:

How To Set Up Google Alerts

First, you need to sign in with your Google account. If you don’t have one, get one and learn everything Google wants you to know, here: www.google.com/support/accounts.

Then, you input a SEARCH TERM (keyword or phrase) you want to be alerted about.

Next, you select what TYPE of search results you want to receive alerts from. You can get ‘alerts’ for results from:

web search

blog search

Google News

Google Groups

Google Video

There’s also an alert you can choose the ‘Comprehensive Alert’ that will provide the results from web, news, & blogs all together (but categorized). Alert items (websites) are selected from the top ‘X’ results in these numbers/categories: 10 for blogs/news/videos, 15 for Google Groups and 20 for web search.

Next, you select how often you want to be alerted.

By day

As-it-happens

Weekly

Finally, you input the email address you want to be notified at, and after clicking ‘Create Alert’, you’re done!

The 10 Google Alerts Secrets

Here are the secrets that will allow Google Alerts to be one of your best internet marketing weapons:

Secret #1 - Find posts to comment on for link building

Using the main keyword(s) your site is about, use BLOG ALERTS for finding posts related your blog or website, so you can post comments to get links from ‘related’ websites. Some blogs implement the ‘nofollow’ tag, but as Eli from BlueHatSEO says “I think we’re being lied to about nofollow. Consider this the call out :)” when asked by Aaron Wall, “Have you ever felt a search engineer was lying about something? If so, have you ever called them out on it?”.

Hmmmmm. I hope I haven’t started something here. Um, YOU SHOULD ONLY COMMENT WHEN you can add to the discussion, not JUST to get links.

Secret #2 - Build relationships with other bloggers, get links

Use industry or niche keywords with BLOG ALERTS or GROUPS ALERTS for relationship building in your niche, industry or area of interest. Finding bloggers and colleagues of like mind helps to build your network. You may get added to blogrolls. You may need a new supplier, a new contractor or a new colleague in a position of influence, and each of these people will have a website. Relationships = links.

Secret #3 - Get great content ideas

Well hello…!!!

By using industry or niche keywords with COMPREHENSIVE ALERTS, you will find lots of ideas for writing that next post should writer’s block ever set in. See how others are writing about your topic. Are they using keywords that will get them into the SERPs, and get them traffic? How are they phrasing things? Also, many of the posts you read from the alerts will lead you to even more resources for ideas to write about.

Secret #4 - Research a new topic to write about, find references, & link potentials

So, you know what you want to write about, BUT you don’t have enough meat for your post… You need to know more. You want good solid references when making your post, and you’ll link to them. And they may link back to you, if you’re nice to them.

Secret #5 - Stay on top of industry news, get links

By using industry or niche keywords with COMPREHENSIVE ALERTS, or just NEWS ALERTS, you will learn about new advances in your field or industry, and this will allow you to be one of the first to post about it, garnering you links from others who use you as their reference. As well, the more you stay on top of your industry, the more you’ll be seen as a guru, & the more links you’ll get.

#6 Find videos for your blog/website, provide valuable content

As everyone knows, TV’s will be extinct in 5 years, and you’ll have a neural-link-monitor built right into your frontal cortex. My point is that videos are becoming more and more popular as a widely accepted and preferred way to communicate news and education across the weeb.

Using VIDEO ALERTS you can find great videos about your industry or topic, and increase your content’s value, quicker. Embeddable videos on your blog are a helpful way to promote the person who produced the video, as well as to provide immediate content access to references you make in your post (about the video, or use the video to support your post). Posting other’s videos on your blog is a great way to get them exposure and subscriptions for their ‘channel’, and just may get you a link back from them in appreciation. Also, funny or stupid videos get links from those who relate. Really.

Secret #7 - Instantly know of your top rankings

Want to see if your new SEO efforts are paying off? Did your site get picked up?

Use the keyword phrase you want to rank well for with COMPREHENSIVE SEARCH or just WEB SEARCH and set your ‘How Often’ selection to ‘As-it-happens’. Wait to see if your site shows up in the alerts. Refine your searches by adding your domain name or a secret word you’ve included on your page.

Secret #8 - Know Thyself

Try using your own name, your company’s name or your domain name as a keyword. By doing so, each time you, your company or your website is mentioned in an article or on somebody’s blog or forum, you’ll be instantly aware! Knowing what others are saying about you is invaluable information for public relations and SEO.

WEB ALERTS using your domain name as a keyword will tell you when someone might not be linking to you when they should - or could be (a simple request may solve that). Also, if you’ve just issued a press release, NEWS ALERTS with your company or domain name are a great way to track if your press release is being picked up by news websites.

Secret #9 - Stay on top of competition

Try using the names of your competition to see when they publish new articles or when someone posts about them, or even just to make sure that you’re not getting left behind in the wake of a new development that your competition is aware of.

Secret #10 - Keep informed of industry educational resources

Use the names of training and tutorial websites as a keyword to keep you informed as to when they’re offering new courses that you can take to expand your repertoire of skills and stay competitive.

***

Play with this tool to get a feel for how it can best suit you, and you’ll quickly see that this is an SEO tool to use regularly - you’ll wonder how you ever did without it.

I’m sure I’m just scratching the surface of what this tool can be used for. What other ideas do you have?
