13 Smartphones that Can Be Unlocked Soon

New smartphones can be very expensive and consumers need to sign a contract with a wireless or VoIP service provider in order for them to get such devices for free or at a tempting discounted price. During the duration of the contract, they would have to pay for the services that they get from the provider, based on the amount that’s reflected in their agreement. The phones that providers issue out are locked to the network so even if the consumer decides to terminate the agreement, he or she can’t use the smartphone he/she acquired from another network provider. Once the contract is completed, the owner of the new smartphone will still have to use the device for that network because it’s locked-in it and can’t be used in another network provider. This is the current practice in the smartphone acquisition market.

New Law, Better Options

This practice may soon become a thing of the past once legislation passes the 289-word bill that will allow smartphone owners to unlock their phones once they have completed their contractual obligations to their phone providers. The bipartisan law is S-517 otherwise known as the Unlocking Consumer Choice and Wireless Competition Act. Senators Al Franken (D-MN) and Patrick Leahy (D-VT), together with Senators Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), Michael Lee (R-UT), Orrin Hatch (R-UT) and Chuck Grassley (R-IA), who are all members of the Senate Judiciary Committee, introduced this law last March 11. The law is short but substantial and there’s a very strong chance that both houses will approve it.

DMCA Legal Extension

This law will repeal any interpretation done on the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) of October 2012 (Section 2a). The DMCA allows exemptions to consumers to unlock their phones with no legal penalties until January 26, 2013. The unlocking process will only be good until this period but this new law that will be approved soon will permit unlocking of smartphones by consumers even beyond this period. Smartphone owners will continuously enjoy the privilege to unlock their phones once they have completed their obligations with the company they signed a contract with.

Complete Contracts Only

The situation is a lot different if the consumer is still in contract with the phone provider. The unlocking of a smartphone by a consumer who is still in an obligation violates the DMCA law and would lead to liability and damages. The only time that unlocking is permitted is when the person has completed his contract and is free to choose his own provider. There were a lot of petitions made on this law and the White House agrees that action should be made to give consumers more freedom of choice particularly in their decision to join one phone provider over the other.

Exclusivity Expires

Phone providers were once protected by DMCA’s passages because it prevents consumers from finding a way around copyright protections and device access control. Phone owners are forced to stick to their provider even if they don’t need to, because their devices are locked to be exclusively used under the phone provider’s services.

New Promo, New Contract

Phone providers aren’t alarmed very much with the passage of this new law. The smartphone industry is very vibrant and what’s for sure, the features of the phones upgrade faster than usual. When a customer of theirs is through with their contracts, a new version of a smartphone will then be out in the market. LG G2 vs Samsung Galaxy Note 3

LG and Samsung have alot of similarities. Both of them are Korean tech giants with global reach and offers almost all home electronics ranging from TV to kitchen appliances and as small as a mobile phone. But the difference arises when we see that Samsung has a leadership position globally in mobile phone sales,

while LG has very minor share. That’s why Samsung continues to launch the successor to its popular series, whereas LG is still trying to find a series which puts it into the global map. Both of them have recently launched G2 and Note 3, and let’s see how they stack against each other-

Design

LG G2 has taken a fresh approach to the Smartphone’s design by completely changing the buttons layout. The volume controls and power button is now at the back of the device, unlike other devices which have them at the sides. This might feel awkward at first, but actually feels much more natural since our hands always rest at the back. The body of the G2 is glossy plastic which sadly makes it prone to fingerprints and smudges. LG G2 is available in White and Black color options.

At the front, Note 3 is almost similar to Note 2 and amazingly Samsung has been able to pack larger screen size in the same form factor. However, things change when we turn towards the back of the phablet as its having a soft faux-leather stitched to the back. This gives the device a premium look and provides good grip to hands. Other buttons and ports follow other Samsung devices only. The stylus is also neatly hidden at the back of the device. It’s available in Black, White and Pink color.

Display

The G2 sports a 5.2 inch IPS LCD display with Full HD resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels, resulting in impressive 424 ppi pixel density. Being an IPS display, the device offers good viewing angles and thanks to LG’s enhancement on color saturation; the display is really great.

Samsung has packed Note 3 with a 5.7 inch AMOLED screen bearing 1920 x 1080 pixels resolution, translating to superb pixel density of 386 ppi. Like all Samsung displays, the device offers good brightness and is viewable even under direct sunlight.

Internals

This part becomes very interesting as both the devices seem to have a similar set of hardware. They’re running on a Snapdragon 800 processor clocked at 2.26 GHz along with Adreno 330 GPU for processing graphics. However, Note 3 will also be available in 1.9 GHz Exynos octa-core processor variant in some markets.

The Note 3 also packs in more amount of RAM at 3 GB as compared to 2 GB in LG G2. This RAM comes in handy for arsenal of multitasking features added by Samsung in Note 3. The Note 3 is supported by a Li-ion battery of 3200 mAh, whereas the G2 is fueled by a Li-Po battery of 3000 mAh. In memory department, the Note 3 scores more than G2 with 32/ 64 GB internal storage expandable up to 64 GB via micro SD card against just the internal storage option of 16/ 32 GB.

In terms of connectivity features, both of them have usual 2G/ 3G/ 4G network supports, Bluetooth 4.0, Wi-Fi, GPS and NFC. Note 3 also support latest USB 3.0 standards in its micro USB port.

Software

G2 is running on Android 4.2.2 (JellyBean) OS, which is not the latest, but the company has promised an update soon. The device has slew of features customized by LG such as Knock Knock, Slide Aside, Q Slide, Capture Tray, etc.

Galaxy Note 3 is loaded with latest Android 4.3 platform and has Samsung’s proprietary TouchWiz interface for tons of features. Making full use of stylus feature, Samsung has added many features as Air Command menu which brings options like Action Memo, Screen Write, ScrapBooker, etc.

Camera

Both devices have a 13 MP camera with LED flash. They are capable of recording Full HD videos at 60 fps. Note 3 also gives an ability to record 4K videos. What sets them apart is that the LG G2 has an OIS (Optical Image Stabilization) which allows the user to shoot better images even in low light conditions.
Both Note 3 and G2 has usual software features like geo-tagging, face detection, burst photo mode and more.

While Android and Apple slug it out over who has the best operating system, the Ativ comes with an OS for the underdogs – Windows 8. That’s right; Ativ comes loaded with what could be Microsoft’s passport into the tablet arena.

Whether it is enough to prize people away from their beloved Android/iOS devices however, is a totally different matter. It’s designed similarly to the Galaxy Tab 10.1 and is extremely thin and light with Samsung calling it the world’s thinnest Windows 8 tablet.

Though it doesn’t sport the high-resolution or miscellaneous attention grabbing details that we have become accustomed to with other tablets, the Samsung Ativ Tab 3 still has plenty to shout about.

The design is similar to most Samsung tablets we are familiar to and have come to love.
