We’ve said before that YouTube represents a great way to grab people’s attention. The problem is that it represents a great way for thousands of other marketers to grab people’s attention, too. So if you want to stand out from the crowd, a Promoted Videos/AdWords integration should help.

A post on the YouTube Biz Blog announced this morning, “Starting today you can buy Promoted Videos directly in AdWords. Any AdWords advertiser with video content - from a small business looking to promote a product, to a movie studio premiering a new trailer - can use Promoted Videos to make sure their videos find a larger audience.”

The post then added, “This integration will provide a single destination for your overall Google ad buy . . .”

Like most advertising options Google offers, this is liable to work wonders compared to older methods. And like all advertising options Google offers, so much analytics data will be available that you’ll be able to tell in no time if your money would be better spent elsewhere.

So now it’s just time for you to see what sort of room there is in the budget and (if you haven’t already) create an effective video. Good luck.

Here’s a slight mindbender for you: people ignore the shouting car salesman who paid to appear on television. But they then tune in to watch quiet good Samaritans help others out. Apply that concept to your online marketing, and you may be onto something.

Here’s an example of sorts. The Twitter handle @drew has been up for sale for a little while now in order to raise money for a cancer charity, and Comedian Drew Carey agreed to pay $100,000 for it if he gets 100,000 Twitter followers before November 9th.

Now, Adam Ostrow has reported, “News of Carey’s bid has been spreading like wildfire across Twitter, as he’s already passed 50,000 followers on his current account (@drewfromtv), up from just 13,000 or so at the start of the month.”

And what’s more, “Carey has upped the ante significantly, telling Shira Lazar of CBS News that he’s willing to donate up to $1 million if he can reach 1 million followers by year end.” (Important read-it-again note for marketers: Carey was in fact talking to Shira Lazar of CBS News.)

So if you can somehow involve yourself or your brand in some sort of charitable effort, you may receive a lot of attention as a result. Plus there’s the fuzzy warm feeling you’ll hopefully get.

If you’ve worried that marketing through a Facebook page might make your brand look cheap, well, you can chuck that thought out the window. A huge number of prominent brands are apparently embracing Facebook, with one sports team pretty much granting the site its full attention.

Here are some facts. The e-tailing group and PowerReviews recently surveyed a lot of online retailers, and 86 percent of them already have a Facebook fan page. Another 10 percent intend to create one within the next year. And three percent intend to make one at some unspecified point in the future. (Thanks go to eMarketer for these details.)

So that means a full 99 percent of the respondents either have or intend to have a Facebook page.

Then, Inside Facebook reports, “The New England Patriots have partnered with Buddy Media to create a new Facebook page that is now their primary source of online content for fans. The Patriots Fan Zone offers fans of the team a opportunity take part in team-related discussions with other fans, stay up to date on games and events through a team calendar, send Patriots-themed virtual gifts, participate in Fantasy Forecast and more.”

So it looks like entities of all sizes (and with all types of budgets) are all about marketing themselves through Facebook these days. You’d probably do well to join the trend.

It’s not a bad thing to get listed in Google Product Search, but standing out from the crowd - there can be dozens or hundreds of other merchants selling the same thing - has always been a problem. So try to catch shoppers’ eyes by letting a video represent your offering.

Did you know that Google Product Search began to incorporate YouTube clips not too long ago? Apparently, not a whole lot of merchants have heard about or embraced the program, so YouTube issued something of a call to action this week.

“When uploading a video, use the video’s tags to identify the UPC, ISBN, brand and MPN information for the product related to that video,” a post on the YouTube Biz Blog suggested. “For example, for a Nintendo Wii gaming console, add ‘UPC: 045496880088′, ‘MPN: RVLSWFSP’ and ‘Brand:Nintendo’ tags.”

The post then continued, “If you’re a Google Base merchant, add the ‘youtube’ attribute to your data feed. For each product that has a related YouTube video review, set the attribute value to that video’s YouTube video ID. The video ID appears in the video’s YouTube URL as shown below: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ctuUrvReOIQ.”

There’s no guarantee that your video(s) will wind up on display, so don’t devote the next three weeks of your life to making clips for every product on Earth. Just consider trying the option out and seeing what happens.

Honestly, the subject of this week’s article is a bit controversial; you may either take it as a great example of what to do or a model of the sort of thing to go nowhere near. But a commercial designed to promote Denmark as a tourist hotspot is without question turning heads.

Not too long ago, a video featuring a woman and a baby started floating around the Web. The woman, who was Danish, claimed that the baby was the result of a one-night stand with a tourist, and said she was seeking the baby’s father. Viewers were supposed to help. Only reporters found out that the Danish government and the Grey Group advertising agency were behind the video.

So did promoting Denmark as a place where local women get drunk and fall into bed with strangers turn out to be a good idea? A lot of people are offended, but that’s raised the profile of the video and Denmark even more.

In fact, Liz Shannon Miller wrote that Grey Group “claims it’s a major success, citing 1.9 million Google searches and 773,000 YouTube viewings. Of course, that’s before the video was taken down, for reasons that haven’t yet been admitted - my theory is that VisitDenmark didn’t believe the hoax would be uncovered so quickly, and thus had no contingency plan in place. (A cautionary tale for all you viral marketers out there.)”

So there are a few facts about the latest Internet marketing effort to attract a lot of eyes. Make of them what you will.
