Rantz Hoseley, the editor behind Image’s “Comic Book Tattoo” anthology of comics inspired by Tori Amos, introduced his latest endeavor at Heroes Con this weekend. Longbox, a digital comic’s platform similar to iTunes, it is expected to launch later this year as a free download for Mac, PC, and Linux. Developed by Quicksilver Software, Longbox comics can be download for a suggested price of $.99 per issue, with the potential for block and subscription pricing. The first two publishers confirmed for Longbox are: Top Cow and BOOM! Studios.

Rantz goes on to explain the platform which will be catered towards more secure digital files and how they would be integrated with the publishers existing creation process which allows for Adobe Indesign as an export option. One great feature is that it allows for a subscription system with a voucher towards the printed graphic novel of that particular book. Other features include DVD-Style commentary of the digital content.

The formats for the Longbox platform will include PC, MAC, and the potential release of mobile and console editions such as Kindle, iPhone, Wii-Ware and X-Box Live.

With the revelation of this news the question that will be on everyone’s mind is, how will this ultimately affect existing publishers and distributors at other levels? And is this good or bad news for the digital comic’s world? These distributors include Uclick, Iverse Media, Clickwheel, Eagle One Media, Drive Thru-Comics, Wowio, and new-comer ComicsXp.
