Virtualization savings are real – and are expected to grow – but government agencies need to overcome funding uncertainties and other significant barriers to achieve their virtualization goals, according to a study by MeriTalk underwritten by Microsoft and NetApp. The new report, “Virtualization Vacuum: The 2012 Government Virtualization Study,” explores the current and future state of play in government server and desktop virtualization initiatives, including key differences between Federal and state/local markets.

The survey of government IT decision makers indicates that virtualization initiatives are picking up momentum. Eighty-two percent of Federal and 77 percent of state-and-local IT professionals say their agencies have already implemented some server virtualization, leading to an estimated savings of 19 percent of their IT budgets – $15 billion across government. By 2015, virtualized workloads are expected to nearly double from 37 to 63 percent – which would boost the savings to an estimated $23.6 billion government-wide.

According to the report, 57 percent of Federal and 64 percent of state-and-local respondents say server virtualization takes priority over desktop virtualization. While government agencies have plans to implement some form of desktop virtualization, less than one in 10 plan to virtualize all applications for all users. However, if desktop virtualization provides just half of the savings of server virtualization, agencies could save 9.5 percent of their IT budget or $7.5 billion.

“When agencies do begin developing their virtualization plans, they should look beyond servers and consider desktop virtualization as well,” said Mark Weber, President, U.S. Public Sector, NetApp. “The more opportunities that agencies are able to recognize and incorporate into their modernization frameworks, the greater their long-term benefits.”

Despite the proven results and clear savings opportunity, only 48 percent of Federal and 39 percent of state-and-local respondents believe that they have the funding needed to meet their server virtualization goals, and that’s not the only barrier. The most common challenge that agencies face for both server and desktop virtualization is legacy application migration. Security is also a hold-up, but more so for Federal agencies than for state/local – 41 percent of Feds cited security concerns, as opposed to 24 percent of state-and-local respondents. Only 63 percent of respondents say their management fully supports server virtualization adoption. Fewer than half report that their agency has a formal policy or common framework for server virtualization.

“Virtualization and consolidation are critical components of an effective cloud strategy, resulting in tangible benefits,” said Susie Adams, Microsoft Federal’s Chief Technology Officer. “If agencies are thinking vigorously and broadly about combining server consolidation, data center consolidation, and private cloud infrastructures, the industry can realize tremendous leaps in scalability, cost savings, improved services, and integrated management. In many ways this begins with a smart approach to virtualization.”

The report also reveals that while virtualization yields big savings, good things come to those who wait. Fifty-seven percent of participants say they expect to wait one year or more to realize savings once a server virtualization solution is fully implemented and operational.

“Virtualization Vacuum: The 2012 Government Virtualization Study” is based on an online survey of 302 government agency CIOs, CTOs, IT directors/supervisors, IT managers, and data center managers conducted in October 2011.

StorageCraft Technology Corporation, a provider of best-in-class backup, disaster recovery, system migration and data protection solutions for servers, desktops and laptops, has announced new virtual server pricing for StorageCraft® ShadowProtect® for Managed Service Providers™.

The new pricing will be available beginning February 1, 2012, but managed service providers (MSPs) may begin installing it on virtual servers immediately.

In addition, MSPs who have signed up for the StorageCraft MSP Rebate Program will receive a $6 rebate for virtual servers they add (over and above their “base” installation number) during their rebate period.

“Many of our partners asked us to provide separate pricing for virtual servers for ShadowProtect for Managed Service Providers, and this new option is a direct response to that. Our channel partners are important to us, and their feedback is an important factor in our decision-making process,” said Curt James, vice president of marketing and business development at StorageCraft.

ShadowProtect for Managed Service Providers features benefits from the award-winning ShadowProtect product line, such as recovery from bare metal to dissimilar hardware or to and from virtual environments, and it gives MSPs the power to deactivate ShadowProtect licenses remotely from the MSP licensing console.

“Our goal is to make it easier for our partners in the channel to provide virtualization and business continuity solutions to their customers, and providing pricing options tailored to virtualized environments is one way to accomplish that,” said James.

This pricing option will be available to MSPs in North America.

The last couple of decades have witnessed a broad sweep of technological developments in computer networking. Computer networking speeds are accelerating significantly beyond the standard 10-Gigabit Ethernet (GbE). From data transmission speeds of 100 megabits per second to 10 gigabits per second to now over 100 gigabits per second, networking speeds have been evolving in sync with growing business needs. The massive data explosion triggered by bandwidth heavy multimedia content, such as, video, voice, multimedia, has and will continue to throw the focus on data transfer rate capability of computer networks.

The continuously growing numbers of users sharing a network, use of advanced applications (i.e. internet-based applications, video communication), faster desktop PCs, and faster network servers, all of which contribute to traffic congestion, are creating a dire need for networks to support gigabit transmission speeds. This insatiable need for faster and faster transmission speeds is forecast to continue gathering momentum as businesses adopt bleeding edge networking technologies, such as, data warehousing, cloud computing, server virtualization, all of which have immense resource demands i.e. higher storage needs, and bandwidth-hogging applications.

Against this backdrop, the network and data communications equipment market is opening up fast due to rising need for connectivity, new applications based on Internet Protocol (IP) and concerns of business firms for security of business data. The market segments of wireless LAN (Local Area Network) equipment continue to expand, as it provides higher mobility and in turn, a greater flexibility within an organization. In order to make use of faster Ethernet technologies such as Gigabit Ethernet and Fast Ethernet, LAN hardware has begun to shift from hubs to switches, which provide faster inter-connections.

In the Router segment of the market, there is increased demand for the gigabit IP products arising out of the increased use of RAS (Remote Access Servers), VPN (Virtual Private Networks), switching and importance of security issues. However, competitive prices in lower-end product segment are expected to act as a hindrance. The increased need for Remote Access Connectivity, e-commerce, Intranets and Internet, is expected to generate additional demand for greater bandwidth and higher speed in the LAN market. In the communications segment, increasing demand for high-speed connection, greater bandwidth and uninterrupted connectivity increases the growth potential of this segment. Even though analogue modems still hold a major share in the developing countries, sales of ADSL routers and modems have improved substantially in recent years.

The depressed economic climate forced companies to reduce their budgetary outlays, and critically re-evaluate their network operations, and infrastructure during 2008 & 2009. This pruning down of investment outlays to hedge the financial weakness in the market as well as in the balance sheets eroded shipments of networking hardware and software products. Thanks to resurgence in economy and sustained growth in the corporate sector, network spending increased over the last few years and will continue to grow in the short to medium term period, which augurs well for networking equipment and products market.

About 52% of enterprises are planning to increase their network equipment spending in the short to medium term, which augurs well for future of this market. Realizing the benefits of having strong network connectivity, SMBs, which hitherto stayed away from making huge IT infrastructure investments too are gradually increasing their network spending. Healthcare, Financial services, and the government sector will be major target markets for network equipment vendors, as these segments will continue to remain major spenders. Network security, Wireless LAN, VoIP and WAN optimization will be some of the major investment areas in network market.

After witnessing a temporary deceleration in growth during 2009, the world market for Ethernet Switches is back on growth track, thanks to resurgence in deployments of data centers, including using 10-Gigabit Ethernet in modular, Top-of-Rack and blade switches. With data/traffic saddled networks are pouring in 10GbE is increasingly becoming insufficient, and advancements in Ethernet will continue to play an ever-bigger role in handling rising data traffic on the Internet. With the ink barely dry on the newest 40GbE and 100GbE technology standard, potential evolution of 400GbE and 1TerabitE, the next rate of Ethernet speed, is already creating a flutter.

Huge pent-up demand and the growing need among enterprises to upgrade existing networks in order to ease congestion have and will continue to drive demand for both wired and wireless Ethernet switching. Having realized that effective communications among employees and uninterrupted access to IT applications will play a major role in enhancing organization productivity and competitiveness, enterprises across the globe have been expanding their existing network coverage, including mobile access, there by driving demand for efficient network hardware. Europe continues to remain the largest regional market for ICT Networking Equipment and products; Asia-Pacific however is the fastest growing regional market. Switches and Routers represent the most prominent product segments in the global ICT Networking Equipment and Products market.

The research report titled “Networking Hardware and Software: A Global Outlook” announced by Global Industry Analysts, Inc., provides a collection of statistical anecdotes, market briefs, and concise summaries of research findings. The report offers a rudimentary overview of the industry, highlights latest trends and demand drivers, in addition to providing statistical insights. Regional markets briefly abstracted and covered include United States, Europe (Spain, United Kingdom, France, and Germany). Asia Pacific (China, Hong Kong, India, Korea, and Taiwan) Middle East (UAE) and Latin America (Brazil, Venezuela) The report offers a compilation of recent mergers, acquisitions, and strategic corporate developments. Also included is an indexed, easy-to-refer, fact-finder directory listing the addresses, and contact details of companies worldwide.

NextComputing, manufacturer of small form-factor servers and workstations, announces the Nucleus Server, the newest member of its Nucleus family of compact computers. The Nucleus Server is a small pedestal server optimized for full-scale server deployments that require a mix of virtualization, high-speed networking, and enterprise-level storage. Unlike traditional servers, the Nucleus Server takes up only half the space, while offering performance on par with much larger systems.

While enterprises are always looking for ways to reduce the cost of running their datacenters, there is a limit to how much space and power can be freed up with traditional rack-mount systems. Many businesses that don’t need a full rack cabinet often opt for tower servers which can be easier to reconfigure or relocate when needed. However, most tower servers are still quite large, and moving them more than occasionally is still not practical. Also, many tower servers lack redundant power or integrated storage on par with rack-mounted solutions.

The Nucleus Server solves the shortcomings of traditional tower servers when it comes to reliability, portability, and performance. For companies that need access to server hardware from anywhere, the Nucleus Server offers the smallest form-factor available, including a convenient handle for easy portage. This can be especially useful for companies that need to run high-end software away from the office, such as conducting sales demonstrations or proof-of-concept installations. In cases where complex applications using multiple virtual machines must be utilized, the Nucleus Server is the ideal alternative to under-performing laptops or shipping bulky servers to a customer site.

While cloud services and WAN are popular for things like email or simpler business software, many branch offices must still use their own servers for more complex applications needing the performance only local hardware can provide. Also, for emergency situations, a disaster recovery plan may require physically moving servers off-site. The Nucleus Server can easily be moved from facility to facility, ensuring that critical applications and data remain intact.

Smaller offices can benefit from the Nucleus Server’s compact size as well. Taking up minimal space, the corner of an office or storage room can be made into an efficient micro datacenter. And unlike many tower servers, particularly those based on a desktop PC design, the Nucleus Server features fully redundant power using a 1300 Watt 2+1 hot-swappable power supply.

Technical specs:

A compact and space-saving mini-tower chassis: 17.37” H x 16.75” W x 5.80” D

Dual Quad-Core or Six-Core Intel® Xeon® processors, or single Intel Core™ i7 processor

Up to 96GB DDR3 unbuffered ECC memory

Up to (14) 2.5” removable or fixed hard drives, either SATA, SAS, or SSDs, including RAID 0/1/5/6/10

Robust virtualization support including VMware vSphere and ESXi, Microsoft Hyper-V, and Citrix XenServer

Redundant 1300W 2+1 hot-swappable power supply module

Optional 48V DC input 1300W redundant power supply

The Nucleus Server is available now from NextComputing and its authorized resellers. Please call +1-603-886-3874 or email Sales(at)NextComputing(dot)com for more information.

Server virtualization is being deployed on an almost universal scale to reduce costs and optimize data center resources. To underscore this point, a recent survey* reported several key findings:

Server virtualization is widely used—74% of respondents are currently using server virtualization and another 19% are planning deployments.

The number of virtualized servers is relatively small today—58% of respondents have virtualized 30% or less of their servers

The number of virtualized servers is growing—the percentage of virtual machines (VMs) run in production will increase from 39% to 58% within two years

This trend is accelerating with new multi-core servers that support many more VMS per physical server and meet the requirements of resource-demanding, mission-critical applications.

As server capabilities grow, many data centers are finding their 1Gbps Ethernet (GbE) infrastructure is the next limiting factor for server virtualization. The solution is migration to 10Gbps Ethernet (10GbE) and the transition is gaining momentum as prices drop for 10GbE adapters and switches.

As part of this next- generation iSCSI environment, VMware introduced support for 10GbE iSCSI adapters with VMware vSphere 4.1. With this new capability, data center administrators have more choices for 10GbE iSCSI deployments. The goal of this technical brief is to provide information that will be helpful when choosing network connectivity for a 10GbE iSCSI solution.

Citrix Systems today announced the availability of XenServer® 6, the most recent edition of its server virtualization product line. As a key component of the Citrix cloud computing and virtualization strategy, XenServer 6 brings new optimizations and improved scalability and performance for cloud infrastructure, desktop virtualization and networking. XenServer continues to grow market presence and adoption, fueled by the strong leadership of the underlying open source Xen® technology, the virtualization platform of choice in a majority of the public cloud today. XenServer was recently positioned by Gartner, Inc. in the leaders quadrant of the “2011 Magic Quadrant for x86 Server Virtualization Infrastructure, and was listed as a “Champion” in Info-Tech Research Group’s Vendor Landscape report on server virtualization.

As the industry progresses into the Cloud Era, new cloud services are emerging that demand platforms that are purpose-built for cloud computing with requirements that are significantly different from the traditional enterprise datacenters of today. These platforms need to be designed from the ground up to deliver multi-tier, multi-tenant services in the simplest and most cost-effective way, using virtualization as a key enabler. Rather than attempting to force-fit cloud capabilities into existing server virtualization architectures, XenServer addresses these challenges by delivering a highly-resilient, cloud-optimized and easily customized virtual platform that helps cloud providers produce differentiated solutions that meet the needs of their customers. In addition, by leveraging XenServer 6 with the recently-released Citrix CloudStack™, users can be assured the core component of their cloud infrastructure has the network and virtualization optimizations necessary for the same scale-out architectures employed by the world’s largest and most successful cloud providers today.

For customers desiring a cost-effective, powerful, and integrated server virtualization solution, improvements in XenServer 6 make it even easier to download, install and use. Since its inception, XenServer has employed a simple licensing model that does not place artificial limitations on breadth of use or impose cost increases as customers utilize higher density servers with more CPUs and memory available for virtual workloads. As a result, users can preserve existing virtualization investments while continuing to grow their virtual infrastructure. In addition, VMware customers can break free from the escalating cost model recently imposed with VMware’s new vSphere 5 licensing plan (often referred to as the “vTax”), but also gain the added flexibility of leveraging the most cloud-optimized server virtualization solution in the market.

New features in XenServer 6 include:

Optimizations for Cloud and Service Delivery Networking – XenServer 6 includes full integration of Open vSwitch, a core technology used to build next-generation cloud networks based on the innovative OpenFlow standard. Tight integration with Citrix NetScaler® enables hardware-assisted network performance optimizations (SR-IOV) for NetScaler VPX™ and SDX™ service delivery products.

Optimizations for Desktop Virtualization – XenServer 6 includes HDX™ enhancements for improved TCO and optimized user experience for virtual desktops using highly graphical applications. With this release, physical GPUs can be centrally pooled and assigned to a virtual desktop, enabling direct access and optimal graphics performance. Additionally, the Citrix XenDesktop® and XenServer product teams have continued to innovate in reducing storage overhead in virtual desktop deployments, leveraging local storage where possible and reducing the storage costs dramatically for XenDesktop customers utilizing the XenServer IntelliCache feature.

“Ten to Xen” – In further simplifying the management requirements for XenServer, customers can still install the product and be up and running in a matter of minutes, while also employing powerful automation features to get the most out of their datacenter resources and ensure service availability and performance.

Full Support for Microsoft System Center 2012 – XenServer 6 now provides customers with the option of managing XenServer hosts and VMs directly from their System Center Management environment – integrating with both Virtual Machine Manager for ongoing machine operations and provisioning and Operations Manager for monitoring and troubleshooting.

Twenty-five percent of small businesses boost IT ROI with virtualized servers; 73 percent of those without virtualization are investigating or planning to virtualize

CDW LLC, a leading provider of technology products and services to business, government, education and healthcare, today introduced the CDW Small Business Virtualization Roadmap, a technology adoption guide that also reports survey results and data showing that small businesses are moving steadily toward more virtualized computing infrastructures. Server virtualization – running multiple, independent, virtual operating systems on a single server – increases the productivity, agility and scalability of computing resources and the business itself, with an attending boost in a company’s return on its information technology (IT) investments.

The study found that 25 percent of small businesses have virtualized at least some of their servers, attracted by efficiency, cost savings and flexibility to meet changing business demands, and that the average percentage of servers virtualized at those businesses grew steadily from 28 percent to 33 percent between July 1, 2010, and June 30, 2011. Even among small businesses that have not yet implemented server virtualization, 73 percent report they are investigating or planning to deploy the technology, with investments averaging 17 percent of their IT budgets over the next two years.

“Based on our day-to-day conversations with small businesses across the United States, we know that most look for IT to deliver business advantages that level the playing field with their larger competitors. In our survey, two-thirds of small businesses that have virtualized their server environments say doing so has significantly increased the ROI of their IT – but virtualization also requires new skills and knowledge to manage effectively,” said Jill Billhorn, CDW vice president of small business sales. “The CDW Small Business Virtualization Roadmap is a resource to help small business IT managers start their journey to a more virtual environment.”

The roadmap is organized according to five key steps in deployment of server virtualization: system assessment, staff assessment, management assessment, execution and measuring success. In addition to research findings and advice from CDW virtualization solutions experts, the roadmap includes advice and comments that were crowdsourced from small business IT professionals across the United States. The advice and tips address such commonly shared issues as how to know whether virtualization is right for a small business, where to obtain knowledge and skills to implement and manage a virtual IT environment and how to secure support for a virtualization initiative from a business’s ownership or management.

On gaining management support, one member of Spiceworks, a social network for IT professionals, said, “We packaged our [proposal] with a virtual private network rollout and an updated disaster recovery plan. This gave management things they wanted for our organization and gave us the up-to-date tools we needed to do our job.”

Of lessons learned during execution of server virtualization, a member of CDW’s online Corporate Advisory Board said, “I wish I had been more informed as to the variety of options out there. There are numerous options (including open source) that we were just not aware of.”

Via survey responses, small businesses that have virtualized say that the top drivers for their decision to do so were replacement of aging hardware (43 percent), server consolidation (36 percent), improved backup and disaster recovery (35 percent), greater efficiency of IT infrastructure (27 percent) and reduced IT operating costs (23 percent). Aside from funding the investment, they also report that top execution challenges were issues of software/hardware compatibility (41 percent), the time required (37 percent), technical support requirements (31 percent) and training required (30 percent).

“For most small businesses, the road to virtualized IT requires careful planning. Our virtualization solution architects believe that a thorough system assessment at the outset is the most important step. Among many benefits, it is designed to identify compatibility issues so the organization can address them in its plan,” added Jill Billhorn. “There are resources available to provide low-cost or no-cost training for IT staff, and to address concerns with technical knowledge and support requirements. Virtualization is an ongoing process and a first step toward full integration of cloud services into a business’s IT architecture. Planned and executed well, it can create great opportunities for small businesses.”

CDW’s Small Business Virtualization Roadmap is based in part on an online survey of 298 small business IT professionals, all members of the Spiceworks social network for IT. Crowdsourced content came from discussion threads on the Spiceworks site and CDW’s online Corporate Advisory Board. Complete methodology details are available in the report.

This whitepaper discusses the many challenges of a total virtualized solution in light of the integration of virtualized servers and virtualized storage. It reviews the complementary technologies of the VMware and IBM XIV® Storage System environments, while highlighting IBM XIV features that address the different issues. Real-world use cases provided at the end of the document illustrate IBM XIV server-storage virtualization success and benefits. After reading this paper, you will have a clear understanding of the different factors involved in achieving an effective virtual environment and how to address them using the IBM XIV Storage System.

Today’s virtualization technology is transforming business. Whether the virtualization goal is to consolidate servers, centralize services, implement disaster recovery, set up remote or thin client desktops, or create clouds for optimized resource use or new revenue streams, companies are increasingly virtualizing their environments.

Organizations often deploy server virtualization in the hope of gaining economies of scale in consolidating underutilized resources to a new platform. It’s important to remember that storage is the chief component underlying an enterprise IT system; therefore, equally crucial to a server virtualization scenario. Many who have implemented server virtualization but neglected to take storage into account find themselves facing common challenges of uneven resource sharing, and of performance and reliability degradation.

So what is the right storage for achieving a complete, complementary virtualized infrastructure? What storage system features will make the most of a virtualized server environment?

The IBM XIV® Storage System, with its next-generation grid architecture, automated load balancing, and exceptional ease of management, provides best-in-class virtual enterprise storage for virtual servers. IBM XIV reduces the overall footprint of the storage architecture as VMware reduces the server infrastructure. IBM XIV end-to-end support for VMware solutions, including vSphere and vCenter, provides hotspot-free server-storage performance, optimal resource use, and an on-demand storage infrastructure that enables the simplified growth key to meeting enterprise virtualization goals. Together, IBM XIV and VMware provide the best consolidation, performance, resilience, and usability for virtual infrastructures.
