The Very Important Point :

I’m paraphrasing here when I say this. The web breaks down so many barriers to communication. You can develop a relationship with a wheelchair bound blind customer just as easily as an able bodied person. We need to make sure we develop our sites and apps to accommodate disabled people . It has surpassed social conscience and good business practice. It is illegal to discriminate against disabled people in many jurisdictions. You leave yourself open to legal action if you fail to accommodate disabled people on your website.

Fret not. Accommodating disabled people will not take much effort.

One solution is to follow the WAI. The WAI stands for “Web Accessibility Initiative”.

WAI (created by W3C, in 1997) is a set of guidelines intended for web developers, authors, and designers- about how to make the web content accessible to people with disabilities.

It would have been so much easier if you could just jump on the internet and put up a website. Make some content and enjoy large amounts of traffic and money. Unfortunately that does not happen. Loads of traffic does not come gushing in without proper keyword research . Your posts will not reach the right audience or worse may not answer the right questions. Keyword research helps answer what they’re looking for.

Imagine having a list of potential buyers , their needs , their pains, where they hang out, where they go shopping for your products, what they’re looking for etc. . That would make your job a whole lot easier. Keyword Research is the internet’s equivalent of real world market research. Ruby on Rails, often shortened to Rails or RoR, is an open source web application framework for the Ruby programming language. It is intended to be used with an Agile development methodology that is used by web developers for rapid development.

What that means is that Ruby On Rails helps you write Web apps Fast.  These days interactive websites are also referred to as web apps. Web developers would have had to code the whole app by hand. A lot of it would be commonly used functions. Needless to say this used to take time , energy and brain power. Brain power , energy and time better spent elsewhere like testing and thinking out the important sensitive functions of the site. Frameworks like Ruby On Rails reduce the time and complexity of writing up something like a Web App.

This is a list post. Instead of trying to fit everything about RoR in one post, I thought I’d share links to some seriously great resources on RoR.

This helps reduce http requests which in turn leads to faster loading times for your website.

Another tip would be to delete redundant CSS declarations. Remove CSS declarations that are not in use.

Move CSS on top and Javascript to the Bottom.

CSS declarations or file includes should be in between the section. This way browsers will know how to display the page before they even get to the HTML .

JavaScript files belong at the bottom , right before the </body> tag.  This prevents JavaScript code from rendering the page while things are still being requested.

Minify CSS and JavaScript

We’re going to use Minify and JSLint for this next part.

Copy all your JavaScript onto the clipboard onto the corresponding input field in Minify.

Then click “Hit Me”. and use the resulting JavaScript on your website.

Make sure you check the JavaScript once again after it is minified to ensure it is still working before replacing existing JavaScript files.

Making CSS and JavaScript External

It is considered good practice to not use inline CSS and JavaScript. Always have them in external files. That way they’re easier to edit, reduce the size of the page, cache easier and reduce load times which leads to a better user experience.

Correcting Dimensions in IMG tags

A lot of people do this. They use ,say an image that is 1200 x 784 pixels, they want displayed at 120×90. They then use html to scale it down. This practice works as in it displays fine but not on the optimization and site speed end. You see if you use Html to scale the images usually by using the img tag, transmitting the image will take a long time.

There are a lot of tools out there which can help you do this. I personally use Paint.NET. Its free and easy to use. You can download it from http://www.getpaint.net/

That brings us to our next step. Firefox’s YSlow comes with a tool called Smush.it Smush.it is our shortcut when it comes to image optimization. Reducing images, art, screenshots etc. would have been a lot of work otherwise.

How to use Smush.It

Open up Firefox .

Open up YSlow.

Under the YSlow tab, you should see four tabs on the top left. Click on Tools tab.

Click on All Smush.it™ . This should open a new window and you should see your images either being processed or optimized. You’re going to have to download them as .zip

Unzip them and upload the optimized images back to your server replacing the previous images. Preferably overwriting them. Repeat them for other pages of your site.

Content Delivery Networks .

This part can become an expensive affair. If you can afford this then by all means do so. It is worth the price and your website visitors will thank you for it. Now for the rest of us there are alternatives.

I use CloudFlare. It is a CDN that comes bundled FREE with a HostGator account. If your site is huge and the solutions that follow don’t help you out much , then I suggest getting a hostgator account to use cloudflare. Serving niches uses Cloud Flare. It is one of the many reasons I think anybody gets to see this Site. So it works wonderfully.

copyblogger.com uses http://www.netdna.com/ the Net DNA Content Delivery Network. So that could be another option you’d want to check out.

Googling “Content Delivery Network” should give you more options. I say this because I don’t too have much info what CDN’s the major websites use.  Bigger websites tend not to discuss their technology choices too much.

Child themes are a fairly new concept. I’ve been hearing about them for some time now. Never really bothered to check out before. But luckily for all of us, I have now. This is not complicated. This is somewhat easy to understand . So don’t fret about all the lingo.

Basically, you create themes that rely on other themes as templates. Now that it turn means you only have to change the child theme to make changes to your WordPress theme .

So why bother you ask ?

As it turns out what most wordpress theme designers do is build on top of existing themes they like. I’m guilty of that myself. Why write everything from the beginning when you might need only a few things changed. For example Serving Niches itself it built on themeorrhea by JTK. I loved the way his theme was built. It was simple and didn’t have too many files cluttering up the back end.

The basic layout for any theme doesn’t have to be different. Now previous to WordPress 2.7 I would have had to change the theme files using editor and add my embelishments. Everytime a new version of the theme was released , I would have had to copy paste all my changes to the new theme. Almost rewrite the whole thing. If you had seen the serving niches theme files , you wouldn’t recognize themeorrhea. There were way too many changes made. So imagine having to write all that again on top of the new theme. It would take time.

See now I don’t have to do that. Now with the concept of child themes , I could simply put all my changes in its own folder , so when I upload a new version of the original theme , I’ll only be rewriting the theme’s files not my changes.

So how do you make use of child themes ?

Child themes are put in the same folder as any other theme on your wordpress installation.

wp-content/themes

To build a child theme , you will first need a mother theme or a main theme to build a child theme on.

All you need to do is to make changes to the style.css file . You need it to tell wordpress that this theme is a child theme.

Neat huh ? Imagine all those hours you’d have to spend rewriting and testing and playing and rehashing and indenting and what not all that code if you were to update the mother theme.

The mother theme style.css. Below is the beginning of a typical style.css .

You do need to make a few changes to the child theme’s style.css . The one file it needs is style.css . You need to put the basic information below in it. Below is an example of how you’d want to fill out the child theme style.css file.

Theme Name: will the child theme’s name

Theme URL: url of your theme if you choose to upload it somewhere so that people can download or purchase it

Description: small description of the child theme

Author: your name or nick name

Author URL: if you have a website. Get a free one atleast mate if you don’t have one.

Template: This is the important option. This is where you mention the location of the mother theme. So say the mother theme is located in wp-content/themes/themeorrhea/ .

You’d write “themeorrhea” here. So it would be Template: themeorrhea .

Version: this is you first child theme ? Call it version 1.0 . you could call it 10.0 if you wanted. It doesn’t really matter.

An example of what a child theme’s style.css would look like.

This child theme will be like any other theme . You’ll be able to activate it like any other theme from the Appearance page in wordpress admin .

So what about the remaining files ?

Simply add them to the child theme folder. The child theme’s files get precedence by default over the mother theme’s files. In other words, should you add a header.php to the sandwich folder at wp-content/themes/sandwich , it will be chosen over themeorrhea’s header.php . Thereby replacing it. The rest of the files will be used as is. If you choose to use the mother theme’s files , do not make an empty file in the child theme folder.

That is all . There you’ve made it to the end.

You should be able to use child themes on WordPress installation now.

An example use of this would be during the holiday season. You want to change the look for maybe December 25th alone or even the week leading up to December 25th .

This way you don’t have to write the code all over . You just need to build a child theme. Maybe just change the background image to something with leaves and bells.

You are limited only by your imagination.

In some cases the trick ups the conversion by a lot. Personally I never recommend tricking people . Respect your customers. Understanding your ideal customer and giving them what they want will give you everything you’ve ever wanted.
