The Goods: What I Like To Use When I Photograph

A couple of months back, I was featured in the back of Professional Photographer magazine. I had just launched Phases + Faces: The Kids of Connecticut. The response was great.

In the September 2009 issue of PPA's monthly magazine, my work was again published. I submitted a few images and answered a brief set of questions about the kind of professional photographic equipment I use to captures weddings or portraits. It was a fun experience.

As I joked to a friend, I started out in the back of the magazine and I'm making my way on to the cover. Someday!

Veena + James: An Indo-American Wedding

Veena and James found my documentary wedding photography services through a website called NJWeddings.com. It was really the first year I had tried the web site and wasn't sure what to expect. What kind of clients would come knocking on my door? What would their expectations be? Why was wedding photography important to them?

Well, when Veena called and described to me exactly who she was looking for and what kind of work excited both of them, I knew we were on the same page. It was a matter of putting our thoughts to paper and finalizing it with an official agreement. Veena was completing her degree in Law and James was deep into his Phd. program at Duke studying political science. Neither one of them could make it up to where I live; Connecticut. No worries. Sometimes my clients and I do get to meet and sometimes decisions are made using the phone and corresponding by email.

The wedding was no ordinary Hindu ceremony. Veena's family trace their roots back to Shenkottai, a town bordering Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, in India. As Sankethi, they are Brahmins (the priestly caste) and so one of the most interesting parts of the wedding was the chanting of the "Purusha-suktha" by family and friends. One of the images you will see below is of all the uncles practicing outside the ballroom. Find out more about the Sankethi community at the North American Sankethi Association.

My thanks go out to Veena and James, Veena's twin (and yes, identical) sister, Aruna, their parents and family for making the day go so smoothly for me. I also want to thank Preeti Desai, who assisted me when I created formal portraits of the couple and their families.

The Hyatt in Morristown, New Jersey is a terrific venue for intimate weddings. If you have a guest list of 250 or less, this is a great option for you. I found the staff extremely cordial and the wedding was deftly coordinated by Monica Boswell. I only wish the hotel was landscaped. Being that it is a "downtown" hotel, there aren't too many places to go to photograph large groups or even the couple. All Event Decorators, led by Jyothi did a wonderful job transforming a ballroom. Dan and his partner of DJNYC spun tunes from the corner of the dance floor which was hopping. Moghul Catering's delicious dinner was a hit. Varsha Patel was in charge of hair and makeup and Veena looked stunning in her multiple outfits. The cake, which you will see below, was designed by Christine Pereira of Design Cakes.

Phases + Faces On Good Morning Connecticut Weekend

The Wedding Is In The Details

Inspired by David A. Williams, whose workshop I attended a few years ago, I've a renewed sense of how and why details are important to capture on a wedding day. I penned my thoughts for India New England's forthcoming Summer/Fall 2009 Weddings Issue.

Coincidentally, two of my favorite detail images grace the cover of this next issue. See below. If memory serves me right, this is either the second or third cover I have contributed to India New England's WEDDINGS issue.

New Poster For CT Children's Photo Project

As I have noted before ProDPI, the nation's premier professional lab and Fundy SOS, a company that produces a wildly popular album creation and proofing program have agreed to sponsor Phases + Faces: The Kids of Connecticut.

You may remember the poster I created when the project initially launched. It had to be updated with the new sponsors' logoa and so find below the newest version of this flier which was generously printed by ProDPI.

Starting this week, I am going to be knocking on doors and calling offices and stores that cater to children in the hopes that they will spread the word on my behalf.

I might have some exciting news to share about this project closer to August 29. Stand by!

Seshu Photography Profiled On Jule's Cafe!

Jules Bianchi and Joy Bianchi Brown are sisters. Identical twins, in fact. But the awesomeness doesn't stop there. They are a dynamo duo based in California who manage a wildly popular wedding and portrait studio.

Like so many talented photographers in my network, I came to know of Jules and Joy through the Digital Wedding Forum. I recall seeing a blog post, regarding a piece of lighting equipment that Jules had used at one of her weddings. Intrigued, I wrote to Jules directly and a few hours later, I had her response in my inbox! In an industry that can be somewhat guarded about techniques or tools, Jules was so generous with her time and information. In some respect, she sets the bar high for other photographers to do the same.

I finally got to meet Jules and her sister through Kevin Kubota at Imaging 2009, in Phoenix. Kevin was just starting to use Twitter and I might have stumbled across Joy's account through him. In any case, I followed Joy and she in turn followed me clearly because each of our Tweets engage and inform our audience.

I subsequently followed Jules on Twitter and found a motherlode of great information for photographers at Jules Caf�. Whenever a new post appeared or a cafe interview was posted, I read and then spread that link around through Twitter. Joy took a shining to the way I was spreading the word and one day offered me a spot on Jules Caf�. I was truly honored when she asked and of course I accepted. Kristen + Ben: A Summer Wedding

I had the pleasure of photographing Kristen and Ben's wedding yesterday and I couldn't but help post just a few images from their terrific wedding at The Riverview, in Simsbury, Connecticut.

I promise to post a whole bunch more images from their glorious wedding very soon. So, come on back, book mark the site and leave a comment. I always love hearing from people who appreciate what I do or can constructively critique my images so that I can become a better photographer.

Notice the new branding? A friend of mine on Facebooksuggested I shrink my logo and contact information so that my audience could take in more of the images I create for my clients. What do you think? Let me know.
