Tips on Moving & Combining “Yours and His”

Wedding day traditions vary ever so slightly from decade to decade based on music, fashion and cultural change. However, today’s newlyweds have a distinct issue that their parents probably didn’t face a quarter century ago – which sectional couch stays, and which one goes?

Today’s Golden Triangle newlyweds have already accumulated many of life’s necessities as a result of living on their own for years before marriage.

So, what does a couple do when faced with duplicates of nearly everything before moving in together?

“Detach,” is the advice from Sean E. Burns, a psychologist.

“Try to respect the fact that some people will build emotional attachments to items,” says Burns. “However, you must jointly establish reasonable limits. Otherwise, you risk associating sentimental value to everything in an effort to avoid difficult decisions.”

Melanie Bergeron, former CEO and current chair of the board for the nation’s largest franchised moving company, Two Men And A Truck, suggests a successful move begins with an open mind.

“I was 30 years old and my husband was 40 when we got married, so we had a lot of duplicates on that first move,” Bergeron says. “All my decor was light and contemporary and his was dark antiques, so I was certain we had a decorating nightmare on our hands. In reality, we ended up finding a happy medium and gave away those items we didn’t absolutely need. So, rule No. 1 is to keep an open mind as you combine homes.”

Bergeron suggests these additional tips to make your first nesting experience as painless as possible:

Duplicates to dollars: Take a pen to paper and lay out your combined inventory a month before your move day. This way, you can begin to visualize what goes where and what duplicates can end up on Craigslist to build funds for items you haven’t yet acquired.-

Box yourself in: Once inventory is complete, decide what will go where and organize everything in boxes that are clearly marked for each room. The more direction you can provide your movers, the faster your move will go and the less it will cost. Contact your local moving company to have all your moving supplies delivered in advance for free.

Purge before you merge: De-junking before moving day is critical to streamlining belongings. Most movers estimate jobs by the hour, so the more you can clean out beforehand the less time it will take to move.

Sweat the big stuff: If you can’t afford to hire a moving company for all your belongings, consider hiring professionals for just heavy, bulky items. In an effort to save money, you have to consider the favors you’ll be forced to ask, the pizza and beverages you’ll need to buy and the anxiety that comes with every hardwood ding and drywall puncture. Before you rent that truck yourself, call for an estimate; the time and money saved will be better spent celebrating your nuptials.

Are you into 70s Chic?

From home decor to fashion and food, the styles and trends of the 1970s have slowly been creeping back into the mainstream, and this year they’re out in full force. Don’t be alarmed when you see the vibrant colors, bold patterns and relaxed entertaining of the decade taking over in today’s world. There are many ways to embrace the retro style while staying thoroughly modern with some simple expert tips. –

Beauty and lifestyle expert Alexis Wolfer of TheBeautyBean.com has some simple suggestions for bringing the best of the ’70s to the current day.

“Fashion is always one of the earliest indicators of style re-emergence,” says Wolfer.

The popularity of mixed prints and varying textures is straight ’70s, and aspiring fashionistas shouldn’t be afraid to take risks.

“Keep all prints in the same color family and you can wear those striped pants with a polka dotted top,” Wolfer recommends. “Tweed, velvet and suede take boring basics to trendy new heights. Swap out your go-to little black dress for a velvet one to entertain in ’70s -inspired style.”

It’s not just personal fashion that is getting the ’70s treatment – this trend is popping up in home decor as well. Forty years ago, colorful appliances were must-haves to match shag carpets and paneled walls. Today the color is back, but dull green refrigerators are being replaced by brighter, more playful colors, like a tangerine orange Kitchen Aid stand mixer, a purple Keurig coffee machine or a bright red washer/dryer. –

Appliances aren’t the only place in the kitchen where trends are re-emerging. Back in the ’70s, the Swiss tradition of fondue, shared around a table, was all the rage at dinner parties and social gatherings throughout the decade. Today, inspired by fondue restaurants, like The Melting Pot, and easy-to-prepare at-home options, people are breaking out their fondue pots more than ever for easy entertaining and a fun, social meal to enjoy.

“Fondue pots, either electric or candlelight-powered, are inexpensive and easy to find at retail chains or online,” says Wolfer. “Emmi Roth USA has a fantastic line of ready-made fondues that are simple and really delicious. Just open the package, pour into the pot and stir!”

Entertaining in the ’70s also meant playing games. “The ’70s brought game night into the spotlight and it’s making a comeback,” says Wolfer. “With family or friends, plan your own game night with classics like Twister or modern ones like Cranium. It’s inexpensive and fun for all ages.” Bring out games that can work with teams or individual players so that everyone is included, no matter how many or how few guests there are. Having small prizes for the winners will increase the excitement and make the party more memorable, so pick up some small items like scented candles, decks of cards or gift cards to local shops or cafes for the game night victors to take home.-

The ’70s was a complex decade but there was no shortage of fun, and embracing the tastes and trends of those days gone by can bring newfound vibrancy and enjoyment into the present.

Southeast Texas Wedding Planning Tips for Blended Families

At SETX Weddings, many of our brides will be forming blended families.

Today’s Southeast Texas wedding tip offers ideas on how to help make this transition smooth for your children.

About 1,300 new stepfamilies form each day in the United States, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. And of the 60 million American children younger than 13, half are currently living with one biological parent and that parent’s partner. This is just as true of Southeast Texas families as anywhere in the country

As a result, Southeast Texas couples are trying to find ways to include their stepchildren in the marriage ceremony and commemorate the union of all members of the new blended family.

Andy Netzel  worked to find something unique and meaningful to commemorate the special day he married his wife, Margie, and became stepfather to Emily, 4.

During the couple’s ceremony, instead of naming Andy and Margie husband and wife, Pastor Michael Meranda paused after the couple kissed and asked Emily to step forward. The couple hadn’t prepared the little girl for this moment. If she knew about it ahead of time, they knew she’d be anxious throughout the entire ceremony.

Andy took the microphone and told his stepdaughter-to-be that it wasn’t just he and Margie who were joined, but rather all three of them. He opened a jewelry box with a Things Remembered bracelet inside. It was engraved with “Mom, Emily, Andy.”

“To me, this wasn’t just about Margie and I getting married. This was a lifelong commitment to our new family,” he says. “Margie had a ring. I wanted Emily to have something she could remember this day by, even when she was getting married herself.” It appears to have worked. Emily now refers to the wedding day as “the day we all got married.”

Personalized treasures

More Southeast Texas wedding couples are turning to personalized gifts to commemorate their Southeast Texas wedding, says Amy Myers, vice president of Creative Services at Things Remembered. The retailer has seen a steady increase in the number of couples coming in to commemorate the occasion.

“We began noticing couples using commemorative gifts about 10 years ago,” Myers says. “Our store managers were the ones who pointed it out to us. We began including engraving suggestions for step families about five years ago. We have a lot of people come in, not knowing exactly what to say.” Myers says the message seems to drive the gift. Once they find the right words, finding a gift is usually the easy part.

Community bricks

Many Southeast Texas families have also purchased engraved “community bricks” to honor the day they became an official family. Bricks can be purchased through churches, schools, civic organizations or even to support a special landmark that is special to the family. Online retailer, Cut In Stone, specializes in engraved bricks of all shapes, sizes and materials.

The symbolism of creating a cornerstone to celebrate the day a blended family came together has a powerful impact, as does the permanence of placing the brick in a prominent part of the community. Many families make a family event out of visiting the location of their brick on their anniversary. When purchasing a brick, families should inquire about purchasing a second one to keep in addition to the one that becomes part of the community landscape.

Handwritten Letters

Some Southeast Texas stepparents use the occasion of their wedding to create a time capsule of sorts with a handwritten letter. In addition to writing a letter to the child about the formation of their family, stepparents can write about what this new family means to them and their hopes for their future together. This further emphasizes the transformation from a couple to an official family.

The letters are often stored in a special box with a few photos and other mementos from the wedding day. Even if the child is quite young on the wedding day, they’ll see the effort that went into making them a big part of that day – and the couple’s life.

Just as a first-time Southeast Texas wedding is cause for celebration, the coming together of two people and their children to create a blended family is an extraordinarily special event. By taking a moment to recognize and pay tribute to the children in a Southeast Texas blended family, couples help children realize they are not losing a parent, but rather gaining another person or group of people to love and support them throughout their future.

You know in your heart if your wedding is supposed to have a DJ or a Southeast Texas wedding band.  

Neither option is right or wrong, but one is more right for you.

If you have decided that a live band is what your SETX wedding reception needs, here are some tips to consider.

1. If you have seen a band at another Southeast Texas wedding and loved them, weigh that pretty highly. Many bands play lots of kinds of gigs- proms, corporate events, fancy birthday parties. A wedding is a little different. If you have seen a band at a wedding and liked the way they played, their appearance, the way they kept the reception moving along, that is very important and should count very much in their favor.

2. Make sure you know where the band is from. Bands travel for gigs and with the internet it is pretty easy for a band to look like they are a “Beaumont wedding band” or “Port Arthur wedding band” when they are really from Houston or Austin or Dallas. Houston, Austin, and Dallas all have great bands but over a four hour drive a band could get lost, drunk, arrested, car trouble, weather problems, or a better paying gig. 3. Use your other Southeast Texas wedding vendors for advice. Your Southeast Texas wedding reception hall and caterer in particular have seen a lot of wedding bands and DJs over the years. They have a really good idea of- who shows up on time, who really specializes in the kind of music you want at your wedding, which bands are the most professional. Your other Southeast Texas wedding vendors can tell you which Southeast Texas wedding bands have blown off gigs, shown up drunk, or who sound great in studio but are less entertaining on stage.
