Loving yourself is a life journey and at times it can be difficult. We all learn to love ourselves at different points in life. Seeing yourself in a loving way is not something we are born with and it can be difficult at times, especially if you’re going through a hard time in life. Self Love takes a lot of practice, patience and work. I have some great news for you though… you’re capable of being a loving person!

Below are a few steps I have taken to love myself more and I am so happy to share them

1. Stop the comparison gameI – get it, it is hard to stop comparing yourself to others around you. Everyone has different things happening in life and we can get consumed in jealousy. It is VERY important to stop comparing and to just be happy. Look at how far along you have come and to see where life is taking you! Start putting all of the energy from comparing yourself to others into the things that make you happy and where you want to go. Make a list of where you want to be in life in the next year or five years. Now that you have a list, you’re able to put your energy into those.
2. Make a list – Sit down and make a list of all of the things you love about yourself. You will be surprised at how much you already love yourself! Once you start to grow and love yourself more, you can add to this list. When you are feeling off come back to this list and remember all of the things you love about yourself.
3. find validation within yourself – Oftentimes we search for validation and support from others, especially when we aren’t feeling our best. It is okay to receive validation and support from others but we need to find the validation and support within ourselves as well.
4. Don’t judge – Stop judging your feelings, it is okay to feel a certain way. You have every right to feel however you do. It is important to recognize that and to feel it.
5. Value yourself -In a world where others may not value you, you have to value yourself. You are worthy of love and to love yourself fully.
6. Perfection – Don’t expect to be perfect because no one is. Trying to be a perfect person will just set you up for unrealistic standards. Instead, try to be the best version of yourself possible. That will most likely include days where it is hard to love yourself (it’s normal). Go back to the list of things you love about yourself when you feel like you need to be “perfect”.
7. Treat yo’self – This is a personal favourite of mine! Treat yourself to the things that make you happy. Is it getting your nails done? Getting your hair done? Having a bath with a glass of wine? No matter what you like to do, take the time to do that for yourself!

You finally booked that dream Boudoir photoshoot and now you’re wondering what you can do to prepare for it. Being a Professional Boudoir Photographer for almost 6 years I can help you! With years of experience and hundreds of Boudoir photoshoots completed, I can give you the best tips for preparing for your Boudoir session.

HERE IS THE TIMELINE OF WHAT TO PREPARE FOR AND WHEN TO:

1 Week Prior to your Boudoir Photoshoot

• Drink plenty of water

• Avoid being in the sun for long periods of time
• Moisturize your skin and face. Use lip balm daily. Baby your skin all week!
• Wash your face with gentle cleansers
• If you have tight hamstrings, stretch to loosen them up. Runners and those who spend a lot of time sitting often have tight hamstrings. Several poses may stretch them and keeping them loose can alleviate discomfort

4 Days Prior to your Boudoir Photoshoot

• Clean up your eyebrows

• Do any hair changes such as haircuts, hair colouring, perms etc.
• Wax. You will be in your underwear or less for your boudoir shoot. Consider your bikini line if you don’t usually
• Clean any rings if you’re wearing it during your session (Also body jewelry)

1 Day Prior to your Boudoir Photoshoot

• Sleep! Get a full night of rest. You want to be hydrated and well-rested for your boudoir session.

• Skip alcohol and parties. Alcohol wreaks havoc on the skin, even in small doses. It depletes the skin of vital nutrients and can leave it dehydrated and dull. Drink lots of water instead!
• Shave if you’re not waxing. Go Slow! Avoid cutting yourself and use lotions that aid in razor burn. If you have time, the day of the shoot, you can do this then.

Day of your Boudoir Photoshoot

• Arrive with a clean face and hair. Remove all traces of your makeup from the night before, and be sure to moisturize and use your eye cream and lip balm. This will help your stylist have a clean canvas to work with and have you looking your best!

• Arrive with loose-fitting or no underwear/bra. You want to avoid tight bras and underwear to avoid having lines in your skin. These take a while to disappear and can draw attention away from your photos.
• Eat a healthy and light lunch. You want to avoid being bloated and lethargic from eating a large, unhealthy lunch. Nobody feels their most confident with a food baby. You want to eat something filling to avoid becoming hungry during the shoot. Eat your veggies, they’ll keep you full and lean.

EXTRA’S TO CONSIDER

Tanning: Spray tanning should be avoided within a week of the session. If you want to have a faux glow, please have it done one week prior to the shoot at a professional salon and do so in the nude. You want to avoid creating tan lines that can show up when you’re not wearing a lot of clothing.

Sunburns: Stay out of the sun one week prior to your shoot! Day to day exposure is fine, but avoid long hours in the sunlight to avoid sunburns. Photoshop can do amazing things, but sunburns will have a negative impact on your shooting experience, and will likely be present in your final images. Be sure to wear sunscreen when you know you’re going to be in the sun!

Tattoos: If you want to have a new tattoo for your boudoir experience, be sure to get it done well in advance to allow healing time. You don’t want to be sticking to the sheets or having any pain during your sessions. Having to constantly alter poses and outfits to account for this can result in less images from your session and an overall less enjoyable experience.

Boudoir photography can be apart of your healing process. It’s a process that helps women find their own sense of empowerment. A process where women learn to love themselves as much as others love them, if not more. Boudoir photography is much more than just putting up some lingerie, posing and getting a nice picture. It’s about creating your own fairy tale and getting that picture of yourself that you’ve always wanted.

It can be easy to think that boudoir is only sexy and fun, but there’s something deeper and more revealing in the sessions and it’s this that I love most.

We are all unique and complex human beings, with our own stories to tell. When we fully accept ourselves as who we are, flaws and all, we become empowered! This journey of self-discovery is one that I wholeheartedly encourage every woman to take. It may sound scary at first but you will find strength you never knew you had.

And yes…the photos are really FUN too! After your photo shoot you will see yourself in a way you could never imagine – stunningly beautiful and radiant. Your images will leave you feeling like a super model because truthfully, you are one!

Boudoir is an incredibly intimate experience, in the literal sense of the word; these are very personal moments, allowing yourself to be completely vulnerable and show your true self and what you are feeling in that moment.

The biggest misconception about boudoir photography is that it’s just for women who want to look sexy. In reality, you can show off your sexiness without being naked or even showing any skin at all!

I haven’t met one woman who feels 100% confident all the time – but we sure can fake it pretty well. “Do it for yourself. Don’t do it for others”

Brooke shared her experience with me so she could be an inspiration to others.

How did you feel before your boudoir session, and how did those feelings change afterward?

I was so excited! I had never done a boudoir photoshoot before, or any photoshoot, really. Leading up to the day, I felt myself become more and more anxious, and extremely nervous. I had never been vulnerable in that way before. My body dysmorphia was at the front of my thoughts, crying up until the night before. I even contemplated cancelling and backing out of everything. With that being said, I still showed up the next day – nervous, shaky, and clammy. Allie made me feel so welcome, and made the whole situation feel a lot more comfortable. The whole session was quickly paced, so I didn’t have tons of time to overthink, which helped me tons. When we were done, I felt extremely empowered and proud of myself.

What were your biggest concerns or fears going into the session, and how did you overcome them?

My biggest concerns were surrounding my body image, and how my body would look in front of a camera. To be in lingerie , where my scars, cellulite, etc was out in the open. I really tried to just go with the flow, and keep up with the pace that Allie was going at.

What part of the experience stood out the most for you?

I would say that my overall growth from the first session to the last, was what stood out for me the most. My overall confidence increased, my opinion on my body image and what people thought of it changed as well. By the last session, we were even doing a kink theme! I don’t think I would have ever had the confidence to do that before my first shoot.

What would you tell someone who is considering doing a boudoir session but is hesitant?

Boudoir is an empowering and confidence boosting experience . It shows you that all angles of you are beautiful, regardless of what stage of life you’re in. It’s a investment in yourself, and your significant other can definitely enjoy the products of it too. With that being said, do it for yourself. Don’t do it for others.

What advice would you give to women who are afraid of showing vulnerability during a boudoir session?

Focus on self care leading up to your session. Pamper yourself, in any way that makes your body feel good. Remind yourself that doing boudoir is more than just having sexy pictures in the end. It’s about taking , or regaining, control of your body and power and seeing the beauty in that.

In what ways do you feel this experience has impacted your life beyond the photoshoot?

I feel that my thoughts on my body image have changed drastically. I am less self-conscious when I’m out in public, especially at the gym. I have posted tons of boudoir pictures on my social media, which is something that I’ve never done before.

Having gone through all three shoots, I feel so much happiness and peace when I see my photos. I can see how my nervousness turned into confidence going from the first shoot to the third. I feel sexy, and confident, and empowered. For one of the first times in my life, I truly feel at ease with my body, I feel beautiful. Allie gave me so much encouragement during this process too, and I truly couldn’t have made it here without her hyping me up!

I was afraid people would see the flaws that I see everyday versus everything good about the photos, or that I’d not be able to shake the nerves and seem at ease. For these things I journaled like a mad man! Allie’s Boudoir Prep guide 100% saved me as well when it came to do’s and don’t before my shoots, as it gives all the ins and outs on how to prep for an upcoming shoot. Having gone from a small to a large/extra large, I found this especially helpful in finding outfits that made me feel good! Making sure to take extra self care steps.

It can be so much fun to fall in love with yourself all over again. Every time I’ve struggled with self confidence, it’s been a battle to teach myself how to love me again, wherever I may be in life. The boudoir sessions, the uplifting comments, the community of powerful, authentic women has been so beautiful to see. I feel less ashamed for wanting to embrace my sexuality, because Allie embraces it in a kind, beautiful way and she’s created a huge community of like minded women. I don’t have a lot of close female friends, so it’s been so beautiful to see so many women just appreciating each other for who we are.

If you’re hesitant, Write it all down. Let out what you’re afraid of, but also write down all of the good that can come from that fear! Allie has a way of capturing you in poses that look natural to you. She has an amazing sense of what will work with each individual, and she encourages you to pick a style that makes you feel sexy and beautiful! There is never a better time than now.

How many women actually do want to do a boudoir shoot and are too afraid to take the first step. So many of us are still stuck in the early 2000’s mentality that we need to look a certain way to be beautiful, and it just isn’t true anymore. It’s also heartbreaking to realize how many women have the same fears as me. It feels less lonely, which is something I didn’t expect.

ADVICE: Breathe through it all, babe. You only need to do what’s comfortable for you. Maybe that’s a lingerie set, a tshirt and cute panties, or full nude. You are in total control. This is a beautiful experience, and I promise you’ll not regret it. And trust me – even if you are nervous, or sweaty(like I was), you’ll never be able to tell in the photos

I feel more at ease with myself, mentally and physically. I’m more comfortable in my skin, and around my partner. I still want to embark on a fitness journey, but it’s no longer because I’m unhappy with my body. I’m no longer in a rush to get to any specific place other than healthy. I’ve had such a confused perception of my body, and it feels like everything negative in my head is calm, and finally at peace. I feel happy with myself, for the first time in a very long time.
