Linkedin is an amazing professional networks if you’re looking to expand your reach, find a new job or just learn stuff. I’ve been using it more and more in the last few months, trying to expand my networking reach.

But I do understand the shortcomings that it might have, and why many people might be looking for alternatives. However, most lists of LinkedIn alternatives begin with a small lie: that one of the names below can replace LinkedIn.

None of them actually can. LinkedIn says its community now exceeds 1.3 billion registered members across more than 200 countries and territories. More importantly, it is not one product. It is a public CV, people directory, relationship graph, content feed, job board, recruiter database, sales tool, events platform, and messaging system sharing one login.

We checked more than 20 platforms that still appear in current recommendations. Some are genuine professional networks. Others do one LinkedIn job much better. Several familiar names have closed, changed direction, or become something else entirely. Here’s our conclusion after sifting through the entire web:

Best Linkedin alternative is … ?

Closest LinkedIn alternative for tech: Peerlist

Best conventional alternative in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland: XING

Best professional network for creatives: The Dots

Best for local business referrals in North America: Alignable

Best professional network for researchers: ResearchGate

Best for a broad job search: Indeed

Best for startup jobs: Wellfound

Best for students and early-career candidates: Handshake

Best for hourly and frontline workers: Jobcase

Best for freelancers: Contra

Best portfolio discovery for visual creatives: Behance

Best proof of work for developers: GitHub

Best for meeting people in person: Meetup

Best for building an audience you can carry with you: Substack

If you want one universal winner, there is not one. Peerlist comes closest for people in tech, but that qualifier matters. XING is far more relevant in the DACH market, The Dots makes more sense for creative work, and neither helps a scientist as much as ResearchGate.

1. Peerlist: the closest alternative for people in tech

Peerlist is the most credible attempt in this list to rebuild the useful parts of LinkedIn around work rather than job titles. Its current product combines a professional profile, people search, a work-focused feed called Scroll, job listings, long-form articles, and Launchpad for sharing new projects.

The profile is the important part. Peerlist can pull together work scattered across places such as GitHub, Dribbble, Medium, and other services. Users can add projects, verify current employment or bootcamp credentials, and even place the profile on a custom domain. Peerlist says it has more than 240,000 members, which is tiny beside LinkedIn but large enough to be useful if those members are the developers, designers, product people, and founders you wanted to meet.

That is where it beats LinkedIn. A conventional profile asks you to describe what you have done. Peerlist is built to show it. Scroll also encourages people to share work in progress, request feedback, and discuss projects, which is more concrete than another post about the five leadership lessons somebody learned while waiting for a delayed flight.

The limitation is equally clear. Peerlist calls itself a community for tech professionals, especially designers and developers. If you work in law, healthcare, accounting, manufacturing, or most non-technical fields, its focus becomes a lack of supply.

Use Peerlist if: your work can be shown as projects and you want a smaller professional network with a higher concentration of builders.

2. XING: the serious regional choice for the DACH market

XING is the closest thing to a conventional LinkedIn rival with meaningful regional scale. The region is Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, not “Europe” in the loose way many comparison pages describe it.

The platform still offers profiles, people and company discovery, professional contacts, recruiters, and job search. Yet XING now describes itself plainly as “the jobs network.” Its current homepage lists more than one million jobs, more than 270,000 employers, and more than 20,000 recruiters. XING’s recruiting business says its talent pool covers 21 million candidates in German-speaking countries, a company figure rather than a monthly-user count.

This makes XING useful for somebody entering or already working in the DACH labor market. Salary expectations, job preferences, recruiter visibility, employer pages, and a profile-based CV all sit closer together than they would on a normal job board.

It is less convincing as a global escape from LinkedIn. The jobs-first direction also means old descriptions of XING as a broad group-and-events social network can be misleading. The service is alive and substantial, but its current value is employment in a specific region.

Use XING if: you work in, hire in, or plan to move into the German-speaking market. Outside it, check the available people and jobs before investing time.

3. The Dots: a real professional network for creative work

The Dots describes itself as a professional network for people and teams that do not wear suits to work. The line is memorable, but the product underneath is what earns its place here.

Members can create a profile and portfolio, connect with peers and mentors, ask the community for advice or collaborators, find freelance and full-time jobs, and attend online or in-person events. The network spans design, advertising, media, film, fashion, photography, publishing, music, marketing, architecture, and adjacent creative work.

Unlike a portfolio-only site, The Dots preserves the relationship layer. Unlike LinkedIn, it starts with projects and creative contribution rather than forcing every career into a sequence of corporate titles. Its current iPhone listing shows frequent 2026 updates, while its job board continues to publish new roles.

The main limitation is geography. The Dots is available beyond Britain, but its cultural and employer density remains strongest in the UK. A graphic designer in London should take it seriously. A designer in a smaller market should first search local people, companies, and recent jobs rather than assume global availability means local activity.

Use The Dots if: you work in a creative field and want the portfolio, community, jobs, and events to exist in the same place.

4. Alignable: better than LinkedIn for local business referrals

Alignable is not trying to help an employee assemble a CV. It is built for business owners who want customers, partners, advice, and referrals from other owners.

That narrower mission gives it a reason to exist. Alignable offers business profiles, local and industry groups, virtual and in-person networking events, member introductions, recommendations, and tools for exploring the connections behind existing contacts. The company says more than 10 million business owners use the network across over 35,000 North American communities.

LinkedIn is better for finding the chief marketing officer at a multinational. Alignable can be better for a local accountant, agency, photographer, consultant, contractor, or shop owner who wants referral partners in the same city. Its model is closer to a digital chamber of commerce than a public career feed.

Free membership is available, while paid membership adds visibility, extended-network insights, and more ways to initiate connections. That matters because the useful part is not simply having a business page. It is the ability to reach relevant owners and participate consistently.

Use Alignable if: you own a small business in the US or Canada and local trust is more valuable than a global follower count.

5. ResearchGate: the specialist network LinkedIn cannot imitate

For researchers, the best LinkedIn alternative is not a general network with an “academic” job-title field. It is ResearchGate.

ResearchGate centers the professional identity on publications, research interests, citations, questions, collaborators, and scientific fields. The company says its community includes more than 25 million researchers and its index contains more than 160 million publication pages. Members can follow researchers, share work where rights permit, ask and answer questions, track interest in their publications, and browse scientific jobs.

This is a good example of niche density beating total size. A molecular biologist does not need one billion loosely relevant profiles. They need the researchers working on the same problem, the literature around it, and evidence of contribution.

ResearchGate does not replace every part of an academic identity. Researchers should still maintain authoritative institutional pages and persistent identifiers where appropriate. They should also check publisher rights before uploading full text. Yet for scientific discovery and peer connection, LinkedIn is the generic alternative here, not the default.

Use ResearchGate if: publications and scientific peers define your professional reputation.

Better alternatives when the real goal is finding work

6. Indeed: the broad job-search winner

If “LinkedIn alternative” really means “somewhere else to find a job,” Indeed is the most practical broad answer.

Job seekers can create a free account, upload a resume, build a profile, set preferences and alerts, search jobs, research salaries, read company reviews, and communicate with employers. Indeed’s own 2026 job-search guide describes the service as bringing millions of listings into one place.

Indeed does not ask you to become a part-time creator to remain visible. That is an advantage for people who want employment rather than a personal brand. Its search reaches industries and job levels that professional-network roundups often ignore.

The tradeoff is the absence of a real network. You cannot reproduce the credibility of a former colleague’s introduction or a hiring manager who has followed your work for a year. Volume is also not curation. Check an interesting vacancy on the employer’s own careers site before spending time on an application, particularly when the listing is old or the company name is unfamiliar.

Use Indeed if: you want the largest practical search surface for jobs and do not care about maintaining a professional feed.

7. Wellfound: the correct answer for startup jobs

Wellfound is the strongest alternative for people who specifically want to work at startups. Candidate profiles can go beyond a resume, listings commonly expose salary and equity information, and applicants can speak directly with founders or hiring managers.

The current service says candidates can create a profile and apply free, with more than 27,000 startups hiring on the platform. It also says its candidate network includes more than 10 million people who opted in to hear about startup opportunities. Those are provider figures, but the more useful distinction is product fit: a person seeking an early-stage engineering, product, design, growth, or operations role is not wading through the entire economy.

There is an important correction here. Wellfound is not simply a new name pasted onto the current AngelList website. AngelList Talent became Wellfound in November 2022 and spun out as a separate company. AngelList now focuses on venture and fund infrastructure. Any current guide telling job seekers to use AngelList profiles, discussions, and job listings is sending them to the wrong product.

Wellfound’s weakness is the same as its strength. It is not the place to look for a hospital administrator, public-sector accountant, or local retail role.

Use Wellfound if: you know you want startup work and value compensation detail and direct access to the people hiring.

8. Handshake: built around the first years of a career

Handshake deserves its own place because LinkedIn is often least useful when a person has the least experience to display.

Handshake combines personalized job recommendations, employer outreach, career advice, in-person and virtual career fairs, resume workshops, events, and a network of peers, mentors, and industry voices. Its employer product says it reaches more than 25 million verified candidates, although that is a provider-reported network figure rather than a measure of who is active in any one field.

The platform is strongest for students, recent graduates, internships, graduate programs, and early-career jobs. Instead of pretending a short work history is a defective version of an executive profile, it incorporates education, career services, and employers that are specifically looking for emerging talent.

Its value still depends on the surrounding ecosystem. A university with active employer relationships, events, and career staff makes Handshake far more useful than an institution that treats it as a link on a forgotten resources page.

Use Handshake if: you are studying, recently graduated, or trying to establish the first credible step in a new career.

9. Jobcase: the worker network most comparison pages miss

Jobcase combines job search with profiles, people search, groups, community discussions, hiring events, career resources, and an AI career coach. Its visible job categories include roles such as cashier, truck driver, retail sales, and stock clerk alongside office jobs.

That matters because LinkedIn and most articles about its competitors quietly define “professional” as somebody who works at a desk and enjoys writing posts about productivity. Jobcase is built around a broader workforce, including hourly, frontline, service, logistics, retail, and skilled roles.

Members can join free, build a profile, aggregate listings from multiple sites, ask the community for advice, and follow hiring activity. This makes it closer to a worker support network than a normal job board.

The service is primarily US-focused, as its location search and much of its employer ecosystem reflect. It also will not replace LinkedIn for executive visibility or B2B prospecting.

Use Jobcase if: your work is underrepresented on LinkedIn and peer support is as useful as another list of vacancies.

Better alternatives for proof of work and independent work

10. Contra: where a freelance profile can turn into a contract

Contra is one of the most complete specialist replacements in this guide because it connects four stages that LinkedIn leaves separate: showing work, being discovered, agreeing a project, and getting paid.

Independent professionals can create a profile and portfolio, describe services, browse opportunities, send proposals, manage contracts, invoice clients, and receive commission-free payments. Contra says these core contractor functions are free, while Contra Pro adds portfolio customization, branding, and analytics for $29 per month at the time of checking.

“Commission-free” should not be translated into “there are no fees.” Contra’s current terms describe contract fees on the company or client side, and optional paid features remain. The useful claim is narrower: the platform does not take a percentage commission from the independent’s payment in the way some freelance marketplaces do.

Contra is strongest for design, writing, marketing, social media, video, product, and software work that can be packaged as a visible service or project. It is less useful for people whose work cannot be shown publicly or bought on a contract basis.

Use Contra if: you want a professional portfolio that can lead directly to scoped and paid independent work.

11. Behance: let the portfolio do the talking

Behance remains a serious discovery platform for graphic design, photography, illustration, UI and UX, motion, architecture, product design, fashion, advertising, and related visual disciplines.

The basic difference from LinkedIn is what sits at the center. LinkedIn centers the person and their claims. Behance centers the project. People can follow creators, browse fields and curated work, contact freelancers, post or find jobs, list services, and use project engagement as a signal of interest.

Adobe has expanded the work layer. Behance now supports freelance inquiries, proposals, payments, a job board, and paid Pro features such as advanced analytics and a custom portfolio site. This makes it more than a gallery, although the gallery remains its strongest asset.

It is still a weak substitute for a complete career history or relationship graph. Hiring decisions also require context that a polished case study can omit, including the creator’s precise role, constraints, collaborators, and measurable outcome. Good portfolios explain those things instead of presenting attractive screens in a vacuum.

Use Behance if: the quality and presentation of visual work will influence a hiring decision more than a conventional resume.

12. GitHub: the professional profile that contains evidence

For a developer, a useful GitHub profile can answer questions a LinkedIn skills list cannot.

GitHub profiles show public repositories, pinned work, contribution activity, project documentation, open-source collaboration, and a customizable profile README. GitHub’s own resume guidance recommends a concise bio, a profile README, and three to five pinned projects that help hiring managers understand the candidate’s skills.

This does not mean a green contribution graph is an employment test. Much professional code is private, contribution counts lack context, and a busy graph can reward activity rather than judgment. The useful evidence is a small number of understandable projects with good documentation, sensible decisions, tests, and a clear explanation of the candidate’s role.

GitHub also lacks LinkedIn’s broad job marketplace and general professional directory. It works best as the proof layer in a stack with Peerlist, Wellfound, a resume, or a personal site.

Use GitHub if: a stranger can inspect at least some of your technical work and understand how you build.

Better alternatives for relationships, community, and an audience

13. Meetup: repeated contact beats another connection request

Meetup is the best alternative here when the problem is not finding profiles but forming actual relationships.

Members can find local or online groups and recurring events around industries, skills, entrepreneurship, technology, public speaking, professional development, and thousands of narrower interests. Joining a group is often free, although organizers pay for group tools and individual events may charge admission.

The best use of Meetup is repetition. Attending the same well-run group several times gives people a chance to see how you think, whether you help others, and whether you return after collecting the first batch of business cards. That can produce more trust than sending 100 personalized connection notes to people who have no reason to remember you.

Meetup has a severe local-density problem. A strong product group in London, New York, Berlin, or Bucharest tells you nothing about what exists in a smaller city. Organizers also determine the tone. Search upcoming and past events, attendance, and discussion before joining.

Use Meetup if: you want collaborators, referrals, mentors, or peers who are likely to remember a conversation.

14. Reddit: professional candor without the corporate stage lighting

Reddit is not a professional network, which is part of why some professional discussions work better there.

Communities are organized around topics rather than employers and connection degrees. People post, comment, vote, and develop a visible reputation inside individual subreddits. There are active communities for programming languages, design, finance, law, medicine, career paths, freelancing, small business, advertising, SEO, PPC, and thousands of narrower subjects.

The pseudonymous structure can produce candor that is difficult on a profile attached to a manager, client list, and next performance review. It can also produce confident nonsense. Community rules, moderation, and the quality of regular contributors matter more than Reddit’s total audience.

Networking is indirect. Arriving with a link, a pitch, and no history usually fails. The useful approach is to answer questions, disclose relevant interests, learn the culture, and let people recognize the quality of repeated contributions. Some communities ban solicitation entirely.

Use Reddit if: you value honest peer discussion and can contribute before asking the community to do something for you.

15. Substack: replace rented reach with a direct audience

Substack does not replace a professional profile. It replaces a more valuable part of LinkedIn for experts, consultants, analysts, executives, and writers: publishing to an audience.

Creators can publish articles, audio, video, and short posts through Notes. Readers can follow, subscribe, recommend other publications, comment, and join chats. Substack is free to start. If a creator charges for subscriptions, the company says the writer keeps 90% of subscription revenue before payment-processing fees.

The strategic difference is that a subscriber relationship can travel with the publisher. Substack says creators own their content and direct subscriber relationships. LinkedIn gives a post distribution inside LinkedIn, subject to whatever its feed decides that week. A newsletter creates a recurring route back to the reader.

This is not a shortcut. A blank Substack is less useful than a complete LinkedIn profile, and a newsletter that appears twice before being abandoned creates no durable authority. It works when the person has a subject worth returning to and can publish consistently enough to earn attention.

Use Substack if: your expertise can attract an audience and you want that relationship to extend beyond a social feed.

It’s time for my second review here at SEW, and I couldn’t be more excited. Today, I’m diving into SERanking and analyzing its features, just as I did in my SerpStat review, which I hope you enjoyed.

First off, it’s important to mention that this isn’t a paid review nor have we been compensated to present it as one. Also, as I’ve mentioned before, I don’t consider myself an advanced SEO practitioner, so my reviews are geared toward average users, who I believe make up the majority.

We’ll provide more technical and advanced reviews for tools that warrant that level of detail, but for mainstream tools, I believe this approach is best.

Anyway, let’s get right into it.

SE Ranking main features

Right from the beginning, the homepage tells us they are another all-in-one SEO platform, and they seem to market themselves with the tagline “AI SEO Software that gets results”. It seems to be offering a huge number of feature. Lets try and break them down:

Not all of these are included in the standard subscription. Content Marketing, Local Marketing, Agency Pack, expanded AI Search and API access may require higher plans or separate add-ons. The platform looks to be more tailored around agencies, in-house marketing teams, growing businesses and enterprises rather than solo practitioners.

The homepage states that SE Ranking is used by more than 40,000 agencies and operates databases covering 188 countries, 5.5 billion keywords and 2.2 billion domain profiles. These are figures supplied by the company rather than independently verified measurements. It supports these claims with customer testimonials, G2 awards and case studies reporting improvements in rankings, traffic, reporting time and agency revenue.

We also had a proper look at its policies to check if everything was alright. Here’s what we found:

While SE Ranking’s terms of service aren’t a dealbreaker, they are notably one-sided and grant the company extensive control over liability, refunds, and unilateral product changes. The most significant red flags include an automatic opt-in that allows them to use your company name and performance data in their marketing, alongside a privacy policy that admits to data sharing qualifying as a “sale” under the CCPA.

Additionally, because their AI privacy promises don’t fully cover third-party models like OpenRouter, users should strictly avoid submitting confidential client data. When you factor in surprisingly restricted export rights for AI Results Tracker data, a strict no-refund policy, and zero liability for data loss, agencies in particular need to carefully weigh these terms and maintain their own regular backups.

SE Ranking Review in 2026

Now, I can only assume that most people looking at a review of SE Ranking are actually looking for the non-agency features, most likely those that still make you think of it as a SEO tool, not a multiplatform. So let’s go ahead and review that.

We went ahead and signed up for a free trial, and the nice part is that it’s no credit card required and also lasts a full 14 days. After you hit the sign-up button, there’s a personalization filter in place, which is probably put there to ensure you land on the right features. I went ahead and clicked freelance because that’s what we assume most SEOs to be, but don’t know for sure.

After this, we’ve been asked “What are your goals with SE Ranking?” and I’ve obviously selected everything. You are then asked to add a website that you might want to track. This can be skipped, as well as previous steps, if you’d like to get right ahead.

If you do proceed with the website you’ve added, it’ll give you an overview of your competitors, keywords you might be missing on, and so on. The UI/UX is very clean, so we liked that for starter.

It was a bit annoying that it would always enforce upon you the geolocation of the country you’re in and it wouldn’t allow you to selected another country that the one in which I found myself at the time of writing this review.

This is how a “vanilla dashboard” looks like when you haven’t yet started working.

The top menu acts as a switcher between SE Ranking’s three product suites:

SE Visible for monitoring visibility in AI-generated answers

SE Ranking for traditional SEO work

Planable for social media management

SE Ranking is currently selected. Their placement under one menu shows the company’s broader ambition to cover AI search, conventional SEO and social media, although these remain separate products and are not necessarily included in the same subscription. The integration is however quite fluid and I can’t say I hate it. Maybe we will review SE Visible and Planable later on.

I moved ahead into the “Create project” section and landed here:

For a short while there was another older UI that appear, so i guess they are transitioning to something new. Users enter a website, page, video or YouTube channel URL, give the project an optional name, and select where rankings should be tracked, including Google, AI Overviews, AI Mode and ChatGPT.

The same screen covers device type, location, interface language and tracked keywords, which can be entered manually or selected from suggestions generated after adding the URL. The displayed keyword allowance shows how many tracking slots the project will consume. Competitors, analytics connections and other settings are now configured after the project has been created rather than during the initial setup. You can use up to 750 keywords per project.

Moving forward, naturally, I’ve added their own domain as website to be tracked, and now we have it displayed inside the dashboard.

Upon further investigation, it seems SE Ranking didn’t actually replace the previous six-step wizard with a single-page project setup. Instead, this is what appears when you go for advanced settings:

Turning on Advanced settings expands the simpler project setup into a six-step wizard. It provides more control over the domain scope, project access, search engines, keywords, AI prompts, competitors and analytics connections, while also letting users enable weekly, website audit and backlink reports from the outset.

This step determines where and how SE Ranking will check your keywords. You can track regular Google results alongside AI Overviews, AI Mode and ChatGPT, then choose the country, a more precise location, language and device. Google Ads and Local Pack rankings can also be included, which is a really nice feature that agencies managing clients buying ads would see great help in. Multiple setups can be added to the same project, which is useful when tracking different countries, cities or desktop and mobile results separately.

I think this is where the project becomes an actual rank-tracking campaign. You choose which searches SE Ranking should monitor for the location configured earlier, in this case Google’s US results, and then type, paste or import your keywords. The platform can also suggest terms based on the website, while folders such as “General” help separate branded, commercial or topic-specific keyword groups.

This is not the place to add every remotely relevant phrase: each tracked keyword uses part of the account allowance, and an oversized list quickly produces noisy reports. It makes more sense to begin with the searches that genuinely matter to the business and expand the list later.

Now, this next feature is really interesting – it seems SE Ranking treats AI visibility as a separate tracking system, not merely another type of keyword ranking. You first select the AI platforms, then add the questions you want monitored, with this account limited to only 20 prompts.

That limit is important, however, because twenty prompts may be enough to watch a small set of commercially important questions, but it is nowhere near the scale of ordinary keyword tracking. It makes the feature closer to a focused brand-visibility monitor than a full replacement for rank tracking.

In the next few steps you can add competitors, and also connect statistics and analytics services. The final two setup steps add context to the ranking data. SE Ranking suggests domains that appear for many of the same keywords as your site, allowing you to select up to five or enter competitors manually. These are search competitors, however, and not necessarily businesses competing for the same customers, so the suggestions are worth checking rather than accepting automatically. You can then connect Google Analytics, Google Search Console or Matomo to bring the site’s actual search and traffic data into the project. Neither step is essential, but together they help show who is competing for your visibility and whether ranking changes are translating into impressions, clicks and visits.

Et voila, we have succesffully added a secondary project, this time through advanced settings. I found the entire process to be very thorough but easily understandable. Oh yes, there’s also a Project status switch which decides whether the project starts running immediately or remains inactive. An inactive project stays in the dashboard and can be reactivated later, but there is an important catch: its keywords and backlinks still count toward the account’s limits. In other words, this pauses the project but does not free any subscription capacity. So be careful there.

Also, it’s important to observe that the number of projects you can create depends on your subscription. Core supports up to 10 projects, while Growth increases the limit to 30. Enterprise customers receive a custom allowance. Agencies managing more websites can either upgrade their main plan or add the annually billed Agency Pack, which provides between 30 and 100 additional projects.

There is also a toggle for settings that lets you decide how much information appears on the main dashboard without changing what SE Ranking tracks. You can show or hide charts, compare your website with selected competitors, choose the metric displayed by default and view Top 5, Top 10 and Top 30 rankings either as totals or percentages.

You can also decide whether those ranking groups are counted separately or cumulatively, select the comparison period and control how projects belonging to subaccounts are displayed. It is a useful level of customization for agencies, as the same dashboard can be simplified for a quick overview or expanded to compare several client and competitor websites.

The Projects sidebar explained

Once a website is selected or more projects are added, this sidebar becomes the control centre for that particular project. Everything here relates to the site you are currently viewing, while the project selector at the top lets you move between different websites.

All Projects returns you to the account-level dashboard, where you can see and compare every website you manage.

Project Overview provides a quick health check for the selected website by bringing its main ranking, traffic, keyword and competitor indicators together. It is designed for checking what has changed before opening the more detailed reports.

Rankings shows where your tracked keywords currently appear across the search engines, countries, cities, languages and devices configured for the project. You can compare dates, follow ranking gains and losses, organize keywords into groups or tags, and review supporting metrics such as visibility, traffic forecasts and SERP features.

Analytics & Traffic combines SE Ranking’s position data with information from Google Analytics, Google Search Console or Matomo. This helps determine whether higher rankings are producing impressions, clicks, visits and conversions, rather than treating every ranking improvement as equally valuable.

It’s a bit weird that you can’t move forward if you don’t enable both GSC and GA

Once given access, I must see the graphs are real nice and the speed at which data was imported was super minimal! I guess this is useful for people dealing with multiple clients as you won’t have to waste time with logins, etc. The data is already here.

When looking at GSC accuracy, it’s stellar. I compared and the data is exactly the same. So this section gets a big tumb up from me!

My Competitors compares the site with domains competing for the same search results. You can monitor manually selected competitors, discover recurring SERP competitors and compare rankings, visibility, share of voice and traffic estimates. The important distinction is that these are search competitors and may not always be businesses selling the same thing.
You can allow the program to add them or you can add them manually. Depending on how much you told it about your project, it may or may not be accurate.
The SERP Competitors feature is again usable and useful only if you’ve given it plenty of keywords. There seems to be a new Advanced Serp Analyzer which comes with quite a lot of features.
It works by defining the exact search results you want to examine. You select the search engine, country, region and interface language, then decide whether SE Ranking should analyze the top 10 or a larger group of results. Next, you add up to five primary keywords, such as “Discord login.” SE Ranking uses the highest-ranking pages for those searches as the comparison set, helping you understand what already performs well in that particular market rather than relying on generic SEO recommendations. Each primary keyword consumes one unit from the account allowance.

AI Results Tracker monitors selected questions across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode. It records whether the brand is mentioned, whether the website receives a link, where that link appears, which competitors are present and which sources influence the generated answers. This is prompt tracking rather than conventional keyword tracking.

Insights looks across the project data and flags developments that may otherwise be missed. These can include keyword cannibalization, declining clicks, low-CTR rankings, weak content, easy-to-improve positions and competitors entering the top results. It is effectively SE Ranking’s attempt to convert large reports into a shorter list of things worth investigating.

Backlink Checker analyzes the site’s broader backlink profile, including referring domains, anchors, linked pages, new and lost links and possible toxicity. It can also be used to investigate competitors rather than only the project’s own website.

Marketing Plan is a built-in SEO task manager. It provides a place to create and organize work, assign tasks, set priorities and deadlines, and record progress. This can be useful for teams, although it is closer to a structured checklist than a replacement for a full project-management platform.
Maybe you don’t want to spend more cash on other tools, so SE Ranking is trying to accomodate this need inside its ecosystem, as well. Having a task management system right inside your SEO platform is definitely a great idea either for someone with a complex project or for someone with multiple clients. It’s a nice feature.

Website Audit crawls the site for technical and on-page problems, including broken links, duplicate elements, indexing issues, redirects and other configuration errors. Audits can be run manually or scheduled, allowing the site’s technical health to be compared over time.

SE Ranking’s Website Audit crawls a website and checks its technical health across areas such as indexability, HTTP status codes, redirects, metadata, images, internal links, page depth, robots directives, Core Web Vitals and server response times. The overview brings these findings together in a health score and separates problems into errors, warnings and notices.

For deeper investigation, the audit is divided into several reports:

Issue Report groups detected problems by type and severity.

Crawled Pages shows the technical details and problems found on each URL.

Found Resources inventories images, CSS, JavaScript and other page resources.

Found Links lets users inspect internal and external links, including links pointing to redirects or broken pages.

Crawl Comparison shows what changed between audits, making it easier to confirm fixes or spot newly introduced problems.

Audits can be run manually or scheduled, exported and shared through a guest link. Users can also configure the crawl limit, scanning rules and JavaScript rendering. It is a fairly complete technical SEO crawler, with enough filtering to move from a broad site-health overview to the individual pages and links responsible for each issue.

Once again, I found it really professionally made, very fast, very accurate. Well done!

Page Changes Monitor watches selected pages and alerts you when important elements change. It can monitor titles, descriptions, headings, content, links, canonicals, robots directives, index status and server responses. This is particularly useful when several people can edit a website, or when an agency wants to know whether a client has changed an optimized page.Ahrefs Firehose overlaps through its URL Watch feature, but Firehose as a whole is not a direct SE Ranking competitor. Firehose is built for faster, broader web monitoring, while SE Ranking keeps page-change alerts alongside its audits, rankings and backlink tools.

Backlink Monitor follows a selected list of backlinks after they have been acquired. It checks whether each link still exists, where it points, which anchor it uses and whether it is follow or nofollow.

Now, this is just the Projects section, believe it or not! Let’s now move to Research.

The keyword suggestions is extremely powerful and intuitive. Of course, as you can see I selected a very difficult keyword to rank for, and the suggestions obviosuly change quite a lot depending on your topic.

Also here you will find the following features:

-> SERP Overview: Shows the top 100 organic results for a keyword in the selected country. Alongside each ranking page, SE Ranking provides estimated traffic, traffic value and the number of other keywords the page ranks for.

-> Organic SERP History: Reconstructs the top 100 results month by month, making it easy to see which pages gained or lost visibility and how stable the SERP has been. You can use it without adding the keyword to a tracking project, although it is limited to Growth and higher plans.

-> Ads History: Shows which websites have advertised for the keyword, the landing pages they used and their current or previous ad copy. This is useful for identifying regular advertisers and seeing how competitors position their offers.

-> Database Expansion: Lets you submit keywords missing from SE Ranking’s research database. They are added to a specific country database during its monthly update, after which SE Ranking can include them in its organic and paid research. This expands the research dataset; it is not an instant rank-tracking tool.

Keyword Manager: Provides somewhere to save, organize and update keyword lists collected from different SE Ranking tools before exporting them or adding them to a project.

Keyword Grouper: Clusters keywords that produce similar Google results, helping determine which terms can realistically be targeted by the same page.

Search Engine Autocomplete: Collects the suggestions displayed as people type into Google, Bing and other search engines. It is useful for uncovering longer and more conversational searches.I was a huge believer in autocomplete data, and I probably still am. We’ve made thousands of articles on our publications just following this logic. This is indeed a very nice tool. I will be working on a modern list with AnswerThePublic alternatives and this one will definitely land there.
You can widen the search by asking the tool to add letters, numbers or spaces after the original phrase, uncovering combinations that would be tedious to test manually. Increasing the search depth explores further layers of suggestions and produces more ideas, although it also uses more paid queries. In this example, each query costs $0.001.

Search Volume Checker: Checks keyword demand in bulk using raw Google Keyword Planner data. These figures can differ from the estimates in Keyword Research, where SE Ranking applies its own calculations. The Search Volume Checker retrieves monthly keyword data from Google Keyword Planner. You choose a country and, if needed, a specific region, then enter or import a list of keywords to check in bulk. This is useful for validating local demand and removing low-volume terms before investing time in them. Unlike the regular Keyword Research tool, it uses a separate pay-as-you-go balance, with each keyword check costing $0.005 in this example.

Index Status Checker: Checks whether a list of pages appears in Google, Bing or Yahoo’s index and allows the results to be exported.

Although quite complex, what I loved was the fact that for the first time when you’re using the product, you are actually given an explainer of how every feature works, instead of blindly referring you to a Help Center. I found it simple and useful. Let’s now move to the Backlinks section.

Backlink Checker and Gap Analyzer

This page gives you a quick overview of any website’s backlink profile before you start examining individual links. You can analyze an entire domain, a subdomain or a specific page, making it useful for reviewing your own site or investigating a competitor.

At a glance, you can see the site’s Domain Trust and Page Trust, how many websites link to it and how many backlinks have been discovered. SE Ranking also shows recently gained, lost and broken links, while the historical charts reveal whether the backlink profile is growing, shrinking or simply fluctuating.

Further down, the report breaks the profile apart by anchor text, referring-domain quality and country. This helps you understand where the links come from, what language is used to describe the site and whether its authority depends on a small number of sources. You can then open the dedicated reports to inspect:

Individual backlinks

Referring domains

Anchor texts

Most-linked pages

Referring IP addresses

There is also a toxicity check for identifying potentially harmful links. Overall, the page helps answer the questions that matter most: who links to the site, which pages attract those links, whether the sources appear trustworthy and how the profile is changing over time.

Let’s have a look at the Gap Analyzer:

This finds websites linking to your competitors but not to you. You can compare a whole domain or just one page against up to five competitors, which is handy for more focused link-building work.

I wouldn’t just sort by Domain Trust and start emailing people. The better prospects are usually sites linking to several competitors already. Still, plenty of gaps will be partnerships, PR mentions or paid links you cannot easily copy. You need to check why the link exists.

The daily limit is a bit annoying. Comparing your site with five competitors uses six of the ten daily checks, and extra checks cost $1 each.

Let’s move to Website Audit, the features that we didn’t cover:

On-Page SEO Checker

This audits one page against the search results for a chosen keyword. You enter the URL, select the country, language and region, then decide whether SE Ranking should compare it with the top 5, 10 or more competing pages.

You can add one primary keyword and up to 30 secondary ones. I would be careful here. Adding loosely related terms may produce confusing recommendations, especially if Google treats them as different search intents.

The resulting reports cover problems on the page, comparisons with ranking competitors and a list of suggested SEO tasks. It is more focused than the Website Audit. That checks the site broadly; this tells you what one particular page may need to compete for one particular search.

SERP Analyzer

This audits the search results themselves rather than only your page. You choose the country, language, region and analysis depth, then enter a primary keyword and any closely related secondary terms.

SE Ranking studies the pages already ranking and looks for patterns across their content, metadata, links and authority. It then produces a SERP report, competitor comparison and a list of SEO tasks. Useful when planning a new page, or when you cannot quite see why the current winners are ahead.

The interface says you can add up to five primary keywords, although my plan allowed only one. Secondary keywords go up to 30, but I wouldn’t fill that box for the sake of it. Mix several search intents and the recommendations quickly become less useful.

Content Marketing – Editor and Idea Finder

SE Ranking’s Content Editor helps you build a new article or improve one that already exists. It studies the top 10 competing pages, then suggests a word count, headings, keywords, topics, images and readability level. Basically, a working brief based on what is already ranking.

The useful part, honestly, is not the AI writer. It is having the competitor research and the draft in one place. You can see what subjects you may have missed, write inside the editor and check the recommendations as you go. AskAI can rewrite sections or generate an entire article, although I would be careful with that. Trying to satisfy every suggested term usually makes the copy worse.

Articles can be shared, exported or moved through the WordPress and Google Docs integrations. My plan included only two articles, though. That allowance disappears rather quickly if you are testing several topics. To be honest, it was a very decent content editor and writer and it actually surprised me.

The Content Idea Finder lets you analyze a topic of interest to get new content ideas, and it was just as decent.

Local Marketing

Here you can have an overview of your Local Marketing activities.

The main dashboard brings all your business locations into one table. You can quickly check each location’s address, phone number, overall score, listing coverage, average rating, review count and when its data was last updated. Locations can also be searched, refreshed or exported.

It makes the most sense for agencies and businesses with several branches. You can spot a location with incomplete listings or weaker reviews without opening every profile separately. Then you move into the sidebar tools for rankings, audits, GBP posts and the actual review management.

The two businesses shown here are demo locations. You need to connect your own Google Business Profiles before the dashboard becomes genuinely useful. The table is also rather wide, so expect some horizontal scrolling.

I didn’t actually have any Local business to use to check it, but i’m expecting their platform so respond as fast as it did when I connected GA and GSC. It even shows your reviews, allowing you to manage them. All in all, this looks to be a full fledged Digital Marketing product.

Report Builder

This turns data from SE Ranking’s different tools into client-ready reports. You can start from scratch or use one of the 12 templates covering rankings, traffic, competitors and website audits. Then add the sections you need, rearrange them, include a cover, table of contents and your own comments.

Reports can be downloaded as PDF, HTML or XLS files, emailed immediately or sent automatically on a schedule. Once you have a layout you like, save it as a template and reuse it. Quite practical for agencies, honestly. Build it once and much of the repetitive reporting disappears.

My account allowed five scheduled reports and four were already in use, though. That limit could become tight rather quickly when managing several clients.

Agency Pack

Agency Pack does not give you more SEO data. It handles the less glamorous side of running an agency: winning clients, giving them access and making the work look properly yours.

White Label adds your branding and domain. Users lets clients see only what you want them to see, while Report Builder takes care of branded, recurring reports.

Lead Generator is probably the most interesting part. You add a free audit form to your website, visitors submit their URL and email, and SE Ranking saves them as leads. It is a better opening than another boring “book a call” button because you already have something specific to discuss.

Still, it is not a lead machine by itself. Without decent traffic, you may mostly collect people looking for a free report. Agency Pack makes the most sense for established agencies with several clients. For a freelancer, much of it may be unnecessary.

SE Ranking API vs Competitors

The API dashboard itself is not especially exciting, which may be a compliment. You generate a key, see how many credits remain and monitor their usage. No maze of developer settings.

The clever part sits behind it. The same key opens two different APIs:

Project API: Automates work already inside SE Ranking, including projects, keywords, rankings, audits, backlinks, users and AI tracking. It consumes your normal plan limits.

Data API: Pulls raw keyword, domain, backlink, audit and AI Search data into your own dashboards, reports or products. This one uses separate API credits, charged only for successful requests.

SE Ranking also provides a Postman collection, MCP server and integrations for Make, n8n and Looker Studio. So you do not necessarily need a developer just to make it useful.

Compared with the main alternatives:

Ahrefs has the better developer controls. You can create many keys, give each one its own spending limit and even turn a filtered Ahrefs report into an API request. Its backlink and organic-search data remains difficult to beat. SE Ranking is simpler, but not nearly as sophisticated for managing several integrations or developers.

Semrush covers a huge amount of SEO, advertising and market-traffic data, but the setup feels more fragmented. API units are purchased separately, different datasets can require different products, and unused units expire at renewal. SE Ranking feels easier to understand and is far less intimidating for an agency testing its first automation.

Serpstat is probably the closest comparison. It also covers keyword research, competitors, backlinks, audits and rank tracking, and its browser-based API Console is actually friendlier for people who do not code. SE Ranking’s separation between project automation and raw data is clearer, though.

DataForSEO is the stronger choice for building a serious data product. Its dashboard provides endpoint-level spending limits, IP controls and much higher standard throughput. Pricing is also genuinely pay-as-you-go. But it is infrastructure, really. SE Ranking makes more sense when you already use the SEO platform and simply want its data elsewhere.

My take: SE Ranking does not have the most advanced API dashboard, nor the largest API ecosystem. It may have the most practical one for agencies. You can automate the account you already use, pull outside research data when needed, and now speak to the same data through MCP.

What annoyed me

Trial and paid limits are too easy to confuse. The interface showed 20 prompts, two articles and five reports, while paid plans include more. Each limit should be labelled with the account type wherever it appears.

Quota multiplication requires a spreadsheet. Keywords multiply by targets, AI prompts multiply by engines, and inactive projects still consume capacity.

The AI allowances overlap awkwardly. Daily prompts in a base plan and monthly checks in an add-on are not intuitive units to compare.

Some screens still feel transitional. I encountered both a newer project form and the older advanced wizard. Neither was difficult, but the shift was visible.

Location onboarding was stubborn. The first setup repeatedly preferred the country detected from my location and made another market less obvious to select.

Too much is presented under one product switcher. SE Ranking, SE Visible and Planable sit together even though they do not necessarily share a subscription.

Several research tools use an additional balance. Autocomplete, Search Volume Checker, Keyword Grouper and other extras can introduce small pay-as-you-go charges.

SE Ranking vs Ahrefs, Semrush, Serpstat and DataForSEO

This is a positioning comparison based on the workflows reviewed here, not a claim that identical domains were benchmarked across every database.

Alternative

Choose it when

Choose SE Ranking when

Ahrefs

Backlink and organic-search research are the center of the job, and power-user data controls matter more than client workflow

You want rankings, audits, local SEO, content and reports organized around projects and clients

Semrush

You need a broader marketing intelligence suite with extensive paid-search and market data

You prefer a cleaner search-operations product with less interface and product fragmentation

Serpstat

Budget and an approachable browser API console are central to the decision

You value the more polished project experience, reporting layer and integrated AI-search workflow; see our hands-on Serpstat review

DataForSEO

You are building a high-volume data product and want infrastructure, granular controls and pay-as-you-go access

You need a working SEO product first and external automation second

SE Ranking does not need to beat every specialist at its specialty to be a rational purchase. It needs to be good enough across the recurring work while saving the team from moving data among four subscriptions. That is the case it makes best.

Who should buy SE Ranking?

Small and mid-sized agencies that manage recurring rankings, audits and reports for several clients.

In-house search teams that want one understandable workspace rather than a collection of specialist interfaces.

Consultants who need research, monitoring and presentable reports but do not spend all day in backlink data.

Teams beginning AI visibility monitoring that want it attached to existing SEO projects rather than isolated in a separate dashboard.

Who should avoid it?

A small site owner who needs only occasional keyword research. The Solo plan may be enough, but the full subscription is difficult to justify.

A link specialist who requires the deepest possible backlink index and has not compared recall on the sites that matter.

A company that wants the best specialist product in every category and does not value consolidation.

A developer building a large data product. A dedicated data provider may offer more predictable economics and infrastructure controls.

A buyer unwilling to model targets, prompts, engines, seats and add-ons before signing an annual contract.

Final verdict: is SE Ranking worth it?

Yes, for the right team. SE Ranking has developed from a reasonably priced rank tracker into a polished search-operations platform. Its strongest quality is not one spectacular database. It is the way projects, rankings, audits, research, content, local activity, AI visibility and reporting fit together without making the interface feel like a warehouse.

The product is easiest to recommend to an agency or in-house team that can retire other subscriptions or reduce reporting work. Core is the sensible starting point for one manager and up to ten projects. Growth is the more realistic agency plan because it adds 30 projects, three manager seats, more historical data, reports, crawl capacity and API credits. Agency Pack should be purchased for its client-facing workflow, not because you expect better SEO data.

The old “cheap Semrush alternative” label should be retired. Once annual billing and add-ons enter the calculation, SE Ranking can cost several thousand dollars per year. That price can still be good value, but only when consolidation is the reason for buying it.

Final score: 8.2/10. Powerful, unusually approachable and very capable for agencies, with one qualification: calculate the real limits before the clean interface persuades you that everything on the screen is included.

As of today, opening Search Console brings up a pop-up pointing directly to this report. It reads: “Get more detail on your site’s performance in the generative AI features on Google Search,” with an “Open report” button that redirects to the new Generative AI report.

Here is a screenshot of the pop-up, along with how the new report looks.

This is the first time we’ve seen this pop-up appear, suggesting Google may be pushing wider awareness of the report now that it’s expanding to more users globally.

Right now, the report only shows impressions no click data yet. That limits how useful it is at this stage, since impressions alone don’t tell site owners much about actual traffic or engagement coming from generative AI features. Clicks would make this report significantly more valuable, and it’s reasonable to expect Google will add that data down the line.

Gary Illyes clarified how Google handles hreflang and alternate URLs during canonicalization, explaining that these alternate versions aren’t indexed in the traditional sense.

This came up in a LinkedIn thread started by Faiez Javaid, who asked:

“If Google is choosing by itself one /lang/ as canonical and ignoring others showing in GSC as not indexed, then how can Google show other lang versions of the same page to the user in search results?”

Gary Illyes replied with a two-part explanation:

“There are two things at play:

Alternate names: When we canonicalize a URL, the other URLs in its duplicate cluster from which it was chosen may become so-called alternate names. They may be used in search results if the user query deserves one of those alternate names. The most prominent use case is the ‘site:’ query. If you do a search like [site:], we may show a bunch of URLs that actually redirect; they’re not indexed in the proper sense; they’re just alternate names of a canonical URL.

hreflang alternates become such alternate URLs; they’re not, in fact, indexed in the proper sense.”

This is a useful clarification for anyone confused about seeing language or region variants of a page appear in search results, despite Search Console reporting those URLs as “not indexed.” According to Illyes, this doesn’t mean those URLs are broken or being ignored they’re simply functioning as alternate names tied to the canonical version, and Google can still surface them in specific contexts, such as through hreflang or site: search queries.

Bing is testing new “See more” and “Visit site” buttons appearing for sponsored results. We spotted this yesterday, with these buttons showing up for the Forbes website specifically.

This looks like a recent test from Bing, though we couldn’t find it appearing for other websites at this time. Clicking the button takes users to the same landing page as clicking the result’s title.

Here is the screenshot of how it looks.

We found this test appearing for on sponsored results. Adding buttons like these could help increase CTR, since they give users an additional, more direct-looking call to action beyond just the title link.

This is an interesting move from Google, surfacing all the websites directly under the sponsored results heading, giving users a clearer sense of which site each ad is coming from.

That said, this is just a test, and it’s not clear yet whether it will roll out permanently.

This is part of a broader trend we’ve been tracking Google has been testing several different ad variations within AI Mode recently, and this appears to be the latest addition to that list.

My guess is that these sitelinks are non-clickable simply because this is still an early-stage test. It wouldn’t be surprising if Google eventually makes them clickable down the line, once the format is further along.

This suggests Bing may be more focused on keeping users engaged within its own search experience surfacing related queries directly from organic content rather than driving traffic out to the underlying site. It’s a notable difference from how we’d typically expect clickable text in a result description to behave.

Google keeps rolling out changes to its Shopping and sponsored results ads. Last week, we saw AI-generated descriptions being tested in shopping ads, along with underlined links appearing in sponsored results. Now we’ve spotted another test: a blue hyperlink within sponsored ads that, when clicked, takes you to the same landing page as clicking the ad’s title. Google appears to be adding more clickable entry points within sponsored ads, likely as a way to boost CTR.

Here is a screenshot of how it looks.

With recent more changes like AI-generated descriptions, underlined links, and now blue hyperlinks all surfacing around the same time, I assume that Google is actively experimenting with how sponsored results look and function.

Google appears to be testing a more AI-focused version of its homepage for people who are not signed into a Google Account.

The homepage adds Create images, Ask about files, and Brainstorm below the search box instead of the usual Google Search button, while an AI Mode button appears inside the search field.

We spotted the homepage while using Google Search in the stable version of Chrome without a signed-in account. We also saw the same layout in Microsoft Edge and Perplexity’s Comet browser.

Image Credit: Venkat | Search Engine Watch

These controls do more than promote Google’s AI features. In our testing, Ask about files and Brainstorm worked without a Google Account, and we could also use AI Mode while signed out.

Image Credit: Venkat | Search Engine Watch

The Ask about files shortcut is particularly interesting. A + button appears inside the search box and lets us attach a file before submitting a question. We could then ask questions about the uploaded file without signing in.

Image Credit: Venkat | Search Engine Watch

Brainstorm also works while signed out. After selecting the shortcut, we get a prompt where we can describe what we need and receive an answer.

Image Credit: Venkat | Search Engine Watch

The homepage also shows Create images, but this option has a different requirement. Google requires users to sign in to a Google Account before they can create an image.

Image Credit: Venkat | Search Engine Watch

The difference becomes clearer when we compare this version with Google’s traditional homepage. Google normally shows Google Search and I’m Feeling Lucky below the search box. In this version, Create images, Ask about files, and Brainstorm take the place of the Google Search button, while I’m Feeling Lucky remains.

The homepage also changes after we sign in to a Google Account. The three AI shortcuts disappeared after sign-in and returned after we signed out again.

Google has not said whether everyone will see this homepage. The change could be part of a test or server-side rollout, and Google may limit it by account, session, or location.

For some signed-out visitors, Google appears to be testing a homepage that puts image creation, file questions, and brainstorming alongside the search box. In our testing, AI Mode, Ask about files, and Brainstorm worked without signing in, while Create images required a Google Account.
