The Muse Asylum by David Czuchlewski was the first book I read in 2011. It’s reminiscent of Carlos Ruiz Zafron’s novel, “Shadow of the Wind” in both theme and feel. It’s about a group of college graduates who are trying to discover the identity of a mysterious and aloof author, only to travel down a path of literary insanity themselves. If you are a fan of books about books or read Zafron’s novels and enjoyed them, I highly recommend this as a follow up.

NonFiction:

My Lobotomy by Howard Dully is one of the saddest books you could read. It’s the true story of a boy who was nothing more than a little hyperactive, and despised by his stepmother to the point where she actually had him lobotomized by infamous Dr. Walter Freeman, who claimed to have “perfected” psychological surgery and is most well known for “Ice Pick Lobotomies”. This is a life-story narrative rather than a plot-driven one, but I promise that even the educational bits about the history of Freeman’s work on lobotomies are freakishly interesting.

Manson in His Own Words by Charles Manson and Nuel Emmons has been disputed by Manson himself, and should definitely be read with not just a grain but a handful of salt, as much of it reads as a list of excuses that, if you’re not careful, can suck you in and make you one of those people who writes him love letters. But if you’re looking for a new perspective or inside look on Manson’s world, it’s a great read.

The Man Who Loved Books Too Much by Allison Bartlett is dangerous, because you realize that you’re not the only one who can appreciate a good book collection, and if people are paying thousands of dollars for a first edition of something, then maybe that $50 Chuck Palahniuk you saw in the display case at Half Price really isn’t so bad, even if your bookshelves are double stuffed and you have to climb over piles and piles of novels to get into bed…. Or maybe it’s just me, but this is the ultimate enabler for book addicts.

Series:

The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins has already gotten a lot of hype and attention, so I’ll be quick about it. This is by far the most fucked up kids books I have ever seen or read, and when I was in middle school I went on a “YA books about school shootings” kick. I read the first book in this series in one sitting, so if you’re looking for a quick shot to the gut, this is the book(s) for you. I will be seeing this movie at midnight when it comes out.

Horror:

The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova is a fang-tastic twist on the Dracula mythos, interweaving actual history with Stoker’s fiction. Don’t be fooled by how intimidating it is in size, this is one of those books that sucks you in and makes you forget that time is passing. Part of why I loved this book so much is that it pulls in so much history from Eastern Europe, which is something you would probably not find yourself getting excited about in any other book. If you’re an avid vampire fan, and I mean a *real* vampire fan who has a brain in their skull, this is most definitely the book for you.

Eleven Twenty-Three by Jason Hornsby is not your average end-of-the-world novel. I picked this up at ZomBcon along with an armload of zombie books, and while I was about ready to start shooting anyone in the head who uttered the words “living dead” to me, Eleven Twenty-Three caught my by surprise. This is a book that is frightening in it’s hopelessness, where you don’t know who you can trust because twice a day, an undeterminable amount of people are going to go bat shit crazy and try to kill everyone. This is one of those great “What the Fuck” books, and I highly recommend it for people who love post-apocalyptic novels but are sick of hearing about them.

Favorite Authors:
S.G. Browne is someone you should already know, probably from Breathers, A Zombie’s Lament, which is the book that turned me on to zombies. But this year I finally got my hands on a copy of Fated and an ARC of Lucky Bastard, both of which follow god-like creatures who hold control over Fate and Luck, respectively. I’m lumping them together, but they’re both very different books. If you are a fan of Christopher Moore and Chuck Palahniuk, S.G. Browne is their sexy literary love child and I highly suggest buying any of his books if you enjoy reading.

Those are my top picks of 2011. Not the books that came out in 2011 (With the exception of Lucky Bastard), but the ones that I read. I am carrying into 2012 a copy of The Darkness by Crystal Conner, which is the first book I’ve read on my kindle. BDSM by definition lends itself to violence and pain, and although there is no one translation accepted by all, many agree that the acronym contains within it three others, each with a similar but separate meaning.

• B&D: Bondage and Discipline. This is more often than not seen as a specific type of play, involving rope or some other form of confinement for the Bottom and the Top enacts some sort of “punishment” upon them, often with the intent to “Train… in how they [The Dominant] wish their submissive to behave.”[2]
• S&M: Sadomasochism. This is a collective term for activities enjoyed by both Sadists and Masochists, people who enjoy inflicting pain or having pain inflicted upon them. Perhaps best described as “the knowing use of psychological dominance and submission, and/or physical bondage, and/or pain, and/or related practices in a safe, legal, consensual manner in order for the participants to experience erotic arousal and/or personal growth.”[3]
• D/s: Dominance and Submission. This is almost interchangeable with the term Power Play, as it involves a bottom/sub to give their top seemingly complete control over them in an erotic scenario.

Power exchange plays an important role in our interactions with others, and “Power plays and shifts are givens in any relationship, especially sexual ones.” [4] People naturally fall into positions of leader and follower, although usually these roles shift continuously throughout our corresponding with others. When you look at it as a form of BDSM, however, the balance is more clearly marked out. Philip Miller and Molly Devon’s “Screw the Roses, Send me the Thorns” even has a list of five different lovels of Power exchange, from “Conditional Compliance” to “Absolute Ownership”. Usually, each scene (term commonly used for an “occurrence or session of SM play.”[5]) involves a Top/Dominant, the one who assumes control, and a Bottom/Submissive, who takes on the role as the ‘victim’. Power Play deals specifically and near-exclusively in Dominants and Submissives, so for the sake of consistency we will use those terms to refer to people and their particular roles.

Many people see this singular aspect of this lifestyle and confuse all BDSM with nonconsensual dominance, associating it with rape. It is important to point out that one of the underlying and inarguable foundations of all BDSM play is consent. “SM is entirely consensual. Ether party, but especially the submissive, always has the absolute right to slow down, change, or completely stop the activity for any reason whatsoever.”[6] While many of the activities in the community – hitting with hands or objects, constriction of movement and/or breath, verbal humiliation, etc – are also seen in situations of abuse, the important difference is that everything has been discussed and agreed upon, and the Submissive has just as much power (if not more) than the Dominant.

Because of the risk involved in many types of play, it is extremely important to sit down and talk about what will happen in these scenes so that everyone participating is able to give informed consent, a phrase borrowed from the medical community but still very applicable as the Submissive must be aware of all the risks before becoming involved. Not only does having a conversation beforehand lay out each of the potential risks associated with any particular play, it helps flesh out the scene and make it more enjoyable for all parties, rather than only playing on the fantasy of a single person or having the Dominant try to guess at what it is the Submissive desires. “Making SM work is dependent upon developing honest, sincere communication and profound trust. The thing that sinks most sexual relationships, vanilla, SM, or otherwise, is the inability to let your partner know what is happening inside you.”[7]. It’s important in any sexual encounter to know what you’re getting into, or to know what will be put into you.

Negotiation is the time to explain what your fantasies and limits are, which makes it important that this discussion happen where it can be “mutual, among equals, and without pressure or manipulation from either side”[8] so that it does not cross into the realm of displeasure, non-consent, or abuse. Jay Wiseman’s “SM101” suggests 16 points to cover when negotiating with a sexual partner – People Involved, Roles, Place, Time, Accidents, Limits, Sex, Intoxicants, Bondage, Pain, Marks, Humiliation, Safewords, Opportunities, Follow-up, and Anything Else – while Dossie Easton and Janet Hardy’s “The New Bottoming Book” describes negotiating as “mutual scheming. What you want to do is compare notes… till you come up with a list of things you would both enjoy and be comfortable doing.”[9] This seems at first glance like quite a bit of work, but it can take as little as 10 minutes to talk through all of Wiseman’s 16 points, depending on the intensity of the scene and what it involves.
As with all things, tastes and preferences vary when it comes to how to have this discussion. Some, like Easton and Hardy, suggest comparing lists and even take it one step further with pre-printed contracts and “Negotiation Questionnaires”. While it is impossible for these to cover every kink, fetish, and otherwise pleasurable and requested activity, it is an invaluable time saver for first-timers and professionals in the sex industry, providing also a reference for future use and serves as evidence that everything is 100% consensual and agreed upon. Some couples and sexual partners try to make it a more casual affair, instead sharing a fantasy verbally and seeing what aspects of it appeal to both parties over coffee or dinner. All of these are options that may work extremely well for some and just as poorly for others, so the importance falls once again on personal preference.  What is important, however, is that everything is discussed thoroughly, as “the more specific you are before…the less chance there is for confusion and disappointment during or after the business.”[10]

Quite possibly the most important part of any negotiation is determining a safeword, “A specific word or other signal used, by prior agreement, to indicate that things are ‘really’ becoming too intense for the person.”[11] If a verbal commend, this is usually a strange word that would not be otherwise used in such situations (like “banana” or “Bulbasoar”) to ensure that it clearly stands out in the stream of communication. This also allows people to play up the resistance aspect of their fantasy if they so desire, letting the Submissive “yelp, wince, cry, plead for mercy, scream for the cops, threaten revenge, and so forth, and such behaviors need not overly concern the dominant….But if the Submissive utters their safeword, the Dominant must respond… stopping, decreasing, or changing the activity.”[12] This simple act of creating and agreeing upon a safeword only takes seconds, but it goes further than anything else in guaranteeing that everything practiced is “Safe, Sane, and Consensual”. Safewords commonly used in the BDSM community include the “Traffic Light Spectrum” – a system of “Red” (Stop immediately), “Yellow” (Slow down/I’m cautious about the direction you’re heading), and “Green” (Everything is wonderful and I’m loving it) – and the unimaginative but unmistakable “Safeword”.

The very idea of a Safeword represents the most important factor of Power Play and BDSM in general – Consent. The key to a successful scene is careful negotiation, discussing every aspect of what’s going to happen in the scene before it actually does. This ensures that everyone involved gets the chance to enjoy themselves, whether their preferred role is one of Dominant or Submissive, without any guilt that they are doing something bad or against the other’s wishes. This widens the rift between consensual BDSM and abuse, which can only be furthered in its cause through communication. Regardless of if your play takes place in the bedroom or at the kink club, it’s important to remember that above all else, consent is the name of the game.

Sex and Death Episode 6 – It Gets Better

Comedy

You Suck! By Christopher Moore. This is actually the second book in a trilogy, but it’s my favorite and I usually recommend skipping the first one anyway. Not that it’s horrible, it’s just not that great in my opinion. But this one, as well as the third book “Bite Me” are downright fantastic. Christopher Moore is one of my favorite authors, and this series is a huge part of it – There’s a homeless man with a very fat cat, the King of San Francisco, and a superawesomesexykewl goth girl named Abby Normal. Oh, and some pretty sweet vampires.

The Nymphos of Rocky Flats by Mario Acevedo (Felix Gomez Book #1). This is one of those paranormal private detective novels, but it puts a fun spin on the sub-genre. Felix Gomez is an American Vet who came back from Iraqwith a bad case of vampirism. If that isn’t enough to get you, how about this – there’s sex. Lots and lots of sex. It’s like the male version of Paranormal Romance, but without too much actual intimacy.

Bunnicula: A Rabbit-Tale of Mystery by Deborah Howe (Bunnicula #1). This is the first in a series about a vampire bunny. He’s cute and fuzzy and only the talking cat and dog know his secret. This is a kids book, but you can read it to small relatives or friends kids, which gives you a perfectly valid reason to read it and shows that you care.

Comedy Pick: Bottomfeeder by Bob Fingerman is the most underrated vampire book ever, and only funny in a very dark way. Phil Merman is the victim of fang-rape, becoming a vampire by force rather than choice. After 27 years of staying the same age, he meets another vampire and learns of the multiple underground cultures formed by his fellow bloodsuckers. It’s a different approach to all the different types of vampire culture, and fun to think of vampires as having cliques. This is my top Comedy pick because it’s as if Chuck Palahniuk wrote a vampire novel.

Paranormal Romance/Urban Fantasy

I have to admit, sometimes I just want brain candy. Books that have no real redeeming value whatsoever, and just make me think about sexy, buff, well oiled men who could be underwear models but for the fact that they are sworn off sunlight. Here are the series’ that I have read and enjoyed thus far, so if you’re thinking of funding your local anti-gays by purchasing a copy of Twilight, I cannot beg you enough to try these instead.

Dead Witch Walking by Kim Harrison (The Hollows Book #1). This series has a fantastic premise – most of humanity is killed off by a virus in genetically modified tomatoes, and once the underground community of witches, vampires, werewolves, and all other things that go bump in the night realize that they are no longer in the minority, they decide to come out of the coffin (to borrow a phrase from another vamp porn series) in something called “The Turn”. Fast forward about fifty years, and Rachel Morgan is a bas ass witch bounty hunter with a super hot lesbian vampire for a roommate and business partner. Interested yet?

Dead until Dark by Charlaine Harris (Sookie Stackhouse #1). Yes, these are the True Blood books. Are you still here, or did you run off to buy them all? If you’re a fan of the show, you’ll probably enjoy these, although I should warn you there isn’t nearly as much nudity in Harris’ version as there is in Alan Ball’s. They’re still perfectly enjoyable, however, especially if you really just need to turn your brain off for a while. Don’t take that as an insult, though – I read all ten in under three months.

Guilty Pleasures by Laurell K. Hamilton (Anita Blake Book #1). Hamilton claims to have invented the Paranormal Romance genre, and while I think she’s a little too generous with herself in that regard, I do have to give her quite a bit of credit for this series. Anita Blake is a (at the time of this writing) 20-book series about a Necromancer who also works with the police to help bring in dangerous supernatural  criminals, nicknamed The Executioner for her high Vampire Kill Count. This series is notorious for having 200-page long sex scenes and being little more than porn, and this gives us as readers kind of a conflict – you start reading the books waiting for sex, but it doesn’t start happening until about book 6, and by the time the novels are nothing more than Vampire/Werewolf orgies, you’ve actually started to give a shit about the characters and kind of wish they’d go back to having an actual plot.

Kitty and the Midnight Hour (Kitty Norville) by Carrie Vaughn. Carrie was one of the first authors I ever met, and for that these books will always have a special place in my heart. Technically, this is a series about werewolves, but I feel that there are enough vampires in there to justify a spot on this list. The main character, a werewolf named Kitty, is hosts a nighttime radio show called “The Midnight Hour” which focuses on Denver’s supernatural side. They’re fun, they’re cute, and at just about 300 pages average, they make for some pretty quick reads.

Paranormal Romance Pick: Interview with a Vampire by Anne Rice (Book #1 of the Vampire Chronicles). I had a tough time deciding if I should put this in Romance or Horror, but I think ultimately these are romantic novels, even if they are more put together than your average Harlequin. If you don’t know the plot of these by now, then you need to read this as soon as possible. This is my pick for Romance because it created the modern romantic vampire as we know it, but because while the rest in this category are fun, they don’t seem to have the same sustenance that these books do. Rice may have retired from the undead, but the novels are still staples in any Vampire lover’s collection.

Horror

These are the classics, or at least the classically told. These vampires aren’t sexy, aren’t fun, and aren’t fucking around. These books are the reason you leave on the light and tie a crucifix around your neck. You know, just in case….

I Am Legend by Richard Matheson. There have been three major motion pictures based around this novella, but not one of them has truly done it justice. Richard Matheson was a true master at his craft of story telling, and this is one of his best works. For those of you who don’t know, Matheson is who inspired Stephen King to start writing. He wrote scripts for Hammer, The Twilight Zone, and unfortunately, a Stephen Speilberg film. Many versions of this book also comes with several short stories, my favorite of which was “The Near Departed”, which actually managed to surprise me (No easy task, I assure you).

The Hunger by Whitley Stieber. This is actually a book about aliens, but the creatures are vampiric in nature so I tend to let it slide. Also, how can you go wrong when David Bowie is in your movie? This is about an alien vampire who hates the idea of living alone and tries unsuccessfully to find a human partner (male or female, doesn’t matter) who’s body can host the virus that causes an allergic reaction to sunlight and thirst for blood, which is apparently really bad for humans. There is a sequel to this novel, but I haven’t read it.

13 Bullets by David Wellington. This is apparently the first in a series, but it’s quite fantastic as a stand-alone novel. The last of the vampires were taken down in the 80s, except for a handful kept for research. Somehow, though, they start cropping up again, and the officer who made his career chasing them down has to partner with the new kid on the case. Sounds like the best buddy cop movie ever, especially when you find out that these are not Anne Rice’s vampires. These guys are more along the Steve Niles side, and they mean business.

Dracula by Bram Stoker. You can’t make a list of vampire books and omit this title, it’s the most influential piece of Vampire literature there is! It’s easy to be bored by this book, the writing isn’t as fast-paced as modern readers are used to, and halfway through you want to shake the characters and say “Well of COURSE he’s a vampire, the book is called Dracula!” but try to forget everything you’ve ever read about vampires and let this book show you for the first time what it means to be a creature of the night.

Horror Pick: Let the Right One In by John Ajvide Lindqvist. I cannot speak highly enough of this book, but be warned: it’s not for the faint of heart. This is one of those novels that’s fucked up on a completely different level, and while a lot of that has to do with it being one of Swedish culture, a great deal of it deals with the depravity of our own soul. This one’s for those who were bullied or were always a little too different, as they will relate to the main boy the most, and I chose it as the top pick for horror because the scariest part of this book isn’t the monsters, it’s the people who don’t need fangs to become them.

Nonfiction

I know this seems like a weird genre to include when talking about fictional creatures (No, I’m not one of those Goths who thinks vampires are real), but you have to trust me on this. There are quite a few totally legitimate encyclopedias, reference books, and even essay collections that make not only for fantastic reads, but are actually quite useful if you ever get in an argument about the original publication date of Dracula (May 1897), or who directed the original Broadway production of Lestat (Robert Jess Roth).

The Vampire Book: The Encyclopedia of the Undead by J. Gordon Melton. Honestly, this is not a book I ever just read for the sake of reading. This is a reference book, one that should always rest somewhere easily accessible, because it comes in handy. Everything is well organized, and each entry is to-the-point. A great coffee table book, or if you’re in charge of putting together trivia questions.

Romancing the Vampire by David Skaal. This is another great coffee table book, but unlike The Vampire Book, this is a great one to just pick up and flip through. Just be careful leaving this one unattended around your vampire-loving friends, because there are a LOT of little postcards, mini posters, and even reprints of theatrical programs. You could decorate your room with this book, and while it has a lot of fang-tastic information packed inside, it’s also a great introduction book for someone who’s interested in vampires but needs a little help getting pointed in the right direction.

Nonfiction Pick: The Dead Travel Fast by Eric Nuzum. This my favorite nonfiction vampire book not because it covers all the bases or has an unreasonable amount of knowledge, but because it’s a book you can sit down and read cover to cover. It’s one of those “My Year Of” books, where the author sets about to explore everything there is about vampires in pop culture – “From Nosferatu to Count Chocula”. He tries to watch a new vampire movie every night, goes on a Dracula tour in Romania, and learns a lot about how vampires are perceived all over the world. It’s a fun little experiment, and one I fully endorse. It’s well written, and packs quite an informative punch in such a short space. If you want or need a crash course on vampires and society, this is the book to read.

A League of Their Own

These are the misfits of the misfits. Books that either can’t be categorized at all or were the only ones of their kind worth mentioning.

Women of the Night edited by Martin H. Greenburg. This is a short story compilation about female vampires, and you will not find a better selection. Some are sexy, some are scary, and one of them is Neil Gaimen’s take on Snow White. Short fiction is an art that is often overlooked, but this is the place to start if you need to warm yourself up with some strong women armed only with fangs.

The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova is a novel that I’m not sure how to categorize. It falls under the realm of Historical Fiction, but is really on a shelf all of itself. Do not be frightened by the daunting size – this book is well over 700 pages but I assure you they fly by. The Historian is inspired by Kostova’s father telling her stories about Dracula as a child, and she expands this story in a fantastic embellishment, doing something few authors dare to do anymore – write an intelligent Vampire novel.

Well, there you have it. My top vampire novels. I’m sure there are some that didn’t make it on the list, as well as ones far better than these that I simply haven’t read yet.
