One of the easiest and most enjoyable costumes for men relate to anything Medieval. These costumes (like king, courtier, knight, etc.) are easy to put together, easy to role play, and fun to wear.

How can you make these medieval costumes come to life? First, you have to figure out which costume suits you the best. Do you feel like being more of a fighting knight than a commanding king? A fancy courtier or a silly court jester?

Find a costume that fits your personal character, or find one that’s completely contrary to your character. Not only will this be fun to roleplay, but it will be surprising to those who know and expect certain reactions from you. That’s what Halloween is all about, after all – playing a role that’s not who we really are.

Getting Medieval with It

Once you have settled on your costume, how do you make it real? It’s not all in the costume, you know. So much is about how you carry yourself, the language you use, the mood you put off as you play the role you have chosen.

So that means try to get into the spirit of the character by talking like the character would talk in medieval times. Consider this exchange when you arrive at the party.

Your host: “Hey, Brian, how are you?”

Brian (that’s you): “I am well indeed, though parched for drink. Pray, dost tell me how I look?”

Your host: “Wow man, okay, you’re in character. You look awesome!”

You: “Thank you, sire.”

You can continue this roleplay as you eat, dance, and enjoy seeing other people. You might choose your foods based on what your character would eat in medieval times, or you might sit and enjoy the proceedings from your designated throne.

Once you have successfully mastered some fun language and behavior, you can work on really carrying things further. Is your partner also dressed for medieval times? What’s her character? If she’s a noblewoman and you a nobleman, you and she will carry yourself differently than if you are both dressed as peasants. From our perspective, you can have a lot more bawdy fun as peasants than noble people (at least in public).

Don’t forget some basics of carrying off this costume. For example, think about your props. Would your knight carry a sword and shield? Would your king have a scepter and crown? Props are as important as the costume; in fact they can make the costume.

Finally, don’t forget to carry the roleplay home with you. Perhaps your peasant lady needs to help you get your boots (and other items of clothing) off, or you need to help her with her corset. You might even continue your in-character language exchange.

You: “Me lady, may I help you with your corset?”

Your lady: “Dear sir, you joust! I think I can remove it myself.”

You: “I doubt you not, my lady, but I have need to find a sheath for my eager sword!”

Cats, as predators, have a mysterious way of skulking in the shadows, then pouncing onto its prey. Slinking around people for no reason can just be annoying, but as a black cat, you can make them nervous and giddy. Who will this graceful and sexy cat strike next?

The best part of the black cat costume is the mix of seductive and dangerous, sweet and sassy, harmless and predatory.

The Purfect Cat Costume

If you aren’t sure how to pull off the black cat costume, think back to Batman and the estimable character of Catwoman. She was a worthy character: lithe, slinking, and seductive all at once. She could purr you into submission and then dominate you once her claws were out.

Another comic character to consider is Black Cat, who is yes, a cat burglar, as well as Spiderman’s one-time adversary and ex-girlfriend. In either case, be prepared to wear tight-fitting leather, though you can buy a costume that is likely made of much more comfortable polyester.

If you decide on simply a black cat, it’s one of the easiest costumes to make.

First, think black. The most seductive, mysterious and interesting cat is the black cat. Plus, there’s all that lore about witchs’ black cats, the superstitions, the unlucky association and the danger .. you get where we’re going. Let’s put it this way – dressing as an orange cat for Halloween just doesn’t carry the same appeal (unless you bring lasagna).

So you start with black, and it’s something that’s tight fitting. You could start with a unitard (there might be use for that thing yet!), a leotard with black stockings, or with very slim fitting black pants and top.

Kitty Essentials

While the black base will get you started, you have to add some uniquely “cat”-essential items to your costume. Think about a tail, for instance. Your cat might have a shorter tail that’s just for looks, something to define your cat as a cat. Or you can choose a long, luxurious tail, the kind that brings more slink to your walk, more sexy to that slinky.

How about the ears? You can go simple and cute, or add pink to them so they have a plush and girly feel without being cutesy. While it’s easy to find a headband at Halloween that features cat ears, it’s even simpler to clip the ears into your hair, which is much more mature and adult looking, and therefore lends itself better to the sexy cat look as well.

Does your kitty wear a collar? Many kitties do, and the most seductive kitties will wear one that’s perhaps velvet or some other touchable fabric. She might have rhinestones on her collar, or some other fancy jewels. Don’t forget this important element – it gives extra sexy to your seductive stride.

Your paws can be black with long claws, or dainty white gloves. Coloring your nails will certainly work as well. Finally, for your footwear, they must be heels. Most cats seem to walk with invisible heels anyway. A dainty kitty will wear cute black or white heels, while a dangerous, predatory black cat will don heavy black boots to stomp over your prey.

Have a great evening, and remember, cats are most active at night!

Determined to get some of her goodies, he sneaks into the Grandmother’s house and gobbles up the grandmother. He then puts on Grandma’s clothes and lies in bed, waiting for Little Red. When she arrives, she can tell something is amiss, and naively states “Grandmother, what big eyes you have…” and then remarks about Grandmother’s nose and teeth, at which point the Wolf says “Al the better to eat you with!” and he chases her around the bed and finally eats her up. A lumberjack overhears the commotion, cuts open the wolf and frees them all. Of course, they all live happily ever after.

You’ve got to wonder if the Brothers Grimm intended for the story to have such strong sexual symbolism, or maybe we’re just a little twisted these days. Either way, we’re not the only ones. Remember the suggestive lyrics of the 1966 San Sham and the Pharoes song; “Hey there, Little Red Riding Hood. You sure are looking good…” and in the 17th century, wearing a red cape was a good way for prostitutes to advertise their profession, much like the red light bulbs that came into fashion in later years.

Bringing Out the Big Bad Wolf

There are several ways to maximize the sexy in your red riding hood costume. If you’re dressing up with someone else, have him be a big scary wolf, or even a wolf disguised as grandmother. A lumberjack costume would also be great for Red Riding Hood’s date, though it’s not as well known.

Red Riding Hood’s Basket

A covered picnic basket with a red checked fabric liner makes the best goody basket. You can fill yours with home baked cookies, if you think the best way to a wolf’s heart is through his belly. If you can’t cook, you could take the shortcut through the woods and fill it with goodies from the bakery or marital aids section.

It’s important not to let the wolf get your goodies. He must be sneaky, sly and cunning in order to get to the goodies. Protect your goodies from the wolf. Always be on the lookout. Remember what your mother said! You don’t just lend your cookies out for anyone.

Red Riding Hood’s Cape

A cape is one of the easiest costume pieces to make, and even a beginning seamstress can handle the job. It basically starts with just a semicircular piece of fabric. Two or three seams, depending upon whether or not you want a hood (kind of mandatory with this costume, unless you want to be called Little Red Riding.)

Before you purchase or make a cape, decide whether you want it to be long or short. A long cape can cover an outfit of red lingerie. Who needs a basket when you can hide goodies in your cape? A short cape can cover a short, girlish dress and reveal your legs. Short capes are cheaper to make and if your dress is cute you’ll want to show it off.

Red Riding Hood’s Dress

True to Red Riding Hood’s girlish charm, many women who dress as Red wear a short dress, sometimes with a square-dancing type petticoat underneath. A red tutu with a red bustier might work also. If you’re going for the long red cape with lingerie underneath, you can wear red or black. If you’re rollplaying in the bedroom, consider maybe wearing nothing at all. Wouldn’t that surprise the wolf!

Red Riding Hood is a great sexy costume, and easy to customize for your body type. If you’re going as a couple, the wolf is easy to pull together. A big grannie dress, a tail, ears and make-up. A lumberjack costume is simply flannel shirt, jeans and an ax.

When you finally get to Grandmother’s house (your home), you can finish the story any way you wish!

The Australian TV series H20 has brought a renewed interest in mermaids and costumes, and in the last few years sexy mermaid costumes have replaced the cute Ariel-looking costumes that once dominated the mermaid-wear market since the 90’s.

Mermaids and Sexuality

Mermaids have occupied the sexual fantasies of men for centuries. Perhaps it’s because they have such long, luxurious hair. Maybe it’s just because they’re topless! It could also be because they were the closest things to a woman that a long seafaring man might hope to encounter. Either way, there isn’t a man alive who didn’t have fish fantasies of his own when Darryl Hannah played a mermaid in the 1984 film, Splash.

On one hand, being sexually attracted to a mermaid is a curious thing, since they, uh, don’t have quite the same female parts that a human woman would have. However, the nature of conquest doesn’t think of such things, and being pleasured by a mermaid, however it works out, is enough of a fantasy. A real woman in a mermaid costume is a popular erotic fantasy, and costumes today are becoming more elaborate and sensual.

Mermaid Costumes

Mermaid costumes weren’t widely available until the Hans Christen Andersen story The Little Mermaid was made into a Disney movie. Since then, Ariel the mermaid with her long, red hair, clamshell necklace and blue-green tail has been the most popular mermaid costume.

While you likely won’t go topless in a mermaid costume, consider a long wig adhered to a string bikini top, or a clamshell mermaid top. Some mermaid costumes come with a top that matches the scaly pattern of the tail/skirt.

Mermen

Mermen don’t seem to hold the widespread fascination of modern women, but in mythology they have powerful magical properties, like healing and potion brewing. Mermen are also not reputed to have interactions with people, and the most popular Merman is King Neptune, of Greek Mythology.

A King Neptune costume has a similar tail as the mermaid costume, and instead of a clamshell bra, they are bare-chested, muscular and holding a forked staff with magical powers, like a wand. Neptune’s hair may be sun bleached, shaggy and long like a surfer and he may be bearded, depending on the style you are going for - sexy, flashy god of the sea, or paternal, regal king? A shark tooth on a leather cord around the neck makes a great accessory.

Going As an Undersea Couple

A mermaid and a merman will certainly turn heads (unless it’s an “Under the Sea” theme), but remember that mermaids are attracted to … ur … seamen. A man dressed as a sailor or a pirate can make a sexy entrance! Imagine, a sharp and handsome U.S. Navy sailor with medals and shiny shoes arriving at a Halloween party with a wild mermaid in his arms, or a swashbuckling pirate with a mermaid at his side instead of a parrot!

For a more chilling look, the man can dress as a pale, drowned sailor in ripped clothing. The sexy mermaid then caresses and touches him like a toy throughout the night, wondering what is wrong with her new-found mate!

Indiana’s knowledge of the ways of the wild is irresistible. He’s also well versed in the ways of men and greed. No matter where a girl goes with him, she will be safe. Unless there are snakes nearby, of course!

Indiana Jones’ Hat

Of course, it all starts with the hat. Indiana’s hat is a brown wool fedora with a washed out black hatband. Surely, when the hat was new, the band would have been darker. New things don’t come in such an off shade of faded black, do they? You can quick-fade a hatband by letting it dry in the sunshine several days in a row.

Indiana Jones Clothes

A white, or beige button down shirt is characteristic of an Indiana Jones Costume. How he manages to keep them from wrinkling the way he packs is a miracle. No need to button the shirt. Well, Ok but just one or two buttons, really low. Those chest muscles need to show. Rip off one of the shirt’s arms so that those hot and steamy biceps can get some air.

Khaki brown pants are required for Indiana Jones. Cargo pants would work, too if that’s all you’ve got. For footwear, hiking boots or black lace-up boots are best. Don’t forget the rope and whip; apparently Indiana Jones likes to tie things up. A pocketknife and canteen are also important.

No matter where you go with your Indiana Jones persona, you know you’re headed for an adventure. Whether you’re saving ancient relics from looters or searching for a missing piece to an archeological puzzle, you’re bound to be intercepted by bandits or captured in a political revolt.

Luckily, Mr Jones is a diplomat extraordinaire with a network of useful contacts all over the globe. Tales of adventure and heroics surround the campfire. Let him tell his daring stories for hours on end while your audience sits at the edge of their seats wondering how he made it out alive.

To get the look down, you need Harrison Ford’s trademark wry grin. Practice in the mirror, with your fedora on. Rewatch the movies to help you mimic his dry humor and facial expressions.

Indiana’s Companions

Women, if you want to adventure with Indiana Jones, (or be an intrepid archeologist like Laura Croft or Relic Hunter), you can dress as an archeologist, too. Instead of khaki pants you might want to wear khaki shorts or denim shorts. You’ll need your own canteen. You might want a hat to avoid sunburn, but if you’re Jones’s girl, he’ll let you wear his.

“Off with their heads!” will become your refrain if you choose this costume. You can play it tough, or you can use that tough girl exterior to hint at the seductive beast within. It’s your call.

And maybe that’s the best part of this costume – there’s a real dichotomy here and it’s a fun one. You can be sexy and seductive, or mean and nasty. The two are on opposite ends of the spectrum but also work in tandem, if you know how to pull it off.

Who is the Queen of Hearts? She’s the nasty-tempered monarch from Lewis Carroll’s “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland”. She rules with an iron fist but is often (silently) overruled by her husband, the King of Hearts. Nonetheless it’s safe to say that she rules the roost and probably controls much in the household.

Variations on the Queen of Hearts Costume

There are two ways to wear the Queen of Hearts costume. For a straightforward approach, you can literally wear a Queen of Hearts playing card. This is a fun and funky costume and one that works well with your partner’s King of Hearts card costume.

Another version is a regal, terrible Queen of Hearts. A bulky, commanding royal dress of reds, blacks and whites. This will be closer to the character in the book, which is an obvious caricature of Queen Victoria (though the real queen never used the chopping block to solve her problems.)

But we think the version that’s more fun is a sexy Queen of Hearts costume. She’s the one that wears the short skirt, the oversized stand-up collar in the back and the super high heels necessary for towering over her subjects.

Here’s how we see a sexy Queen of Hearts costume. We’ll start from the bottom up, because, well, it’s just fun that way. So we start with the shoes. They must be high heels, and if you’re working for a sensual but demanding, queen, they should be high enough that it’s clear who is reigning over this party.

Those feet and legs should likely be encased in white tights, or – better yet – thigh high stockings. The skirt should be short, poofy and in black and red. Those, after all, are the colors of the Queen of Hearts playing card. Think satin and tulle for the skirt. The top will will a plunging neckline, and could be a halter top, or a tank top, or a laced corset. It will accentuate the breasts, because this queen knows how to use her myriad of powers.

Finally, your costume should have some kind of “queenly” collar that stands up behind the head and announces to the world that – look out – the queen has arrived and is full of blind fury!

If you want to go statelier and a little less sexy, you can purchase or make a costume that features a full-length gown, similar to something a real queen would wear. You can pull of the sexy aspect by keeping the bodice low-cut and the lingerie underneath, shall we say, dangerous. Make sure to stick with the essential Queen of Hearts color scheme – black, red and white.

Throttling a Pink Flamingo

Don’t forget the accessories! If you know the story, you will remember that the Queen loves a good game of croquet. In this case, though, the mallets were flamingos, the balls were hedgehogs, and the arches were soldiers standing on their hands and feet to form them.

So, bringing a pink flamingo to the party would get a couple laughs, until you knot your eyebrows in fury and shout “Off with your heads!”

While in costume, play up this fun role. Remember – a woman with power can be enticing to men. You can roleplay this to the hilt, acting haughty yet horny, iron-fisted, yet in-the-mood. Have fun with this.

If moving this roleplay right into the bedroom, “Off with their heads!” can take on an entirely different meaning!

Gothic Jewelry - On the dark side

Costumes like Dracula, anything Gothic, and witches are best suited for silver and black leather. Long necklaces with religious crosses are symbolic of Gothic styles. Witches and vampires prefer a pentacle. Multi-charmed necklaces with celestial symbols are also great additions to a witch’s costume, as are excessive bracelets. A small potion bottle or leather sack worn as an amulet give the impression that a witch is ready for casting a spell at a moment’s notice.

Blackening the silver makes the jewelry look more authentic, old and tarnished. Rather than waiting hundreds of years, you can blacken any silver jewelry by dipping it in bleach and allowing it to air-dry for a few hours, Afterward, gently wipe off the raised parts and allow the blackness to settle deep in the cracks. It will continue to blacken unless you wash or buff off the oxidation.

Plastic costume jewelry can be blackened with a permanent marker. Just color deep inside the cracks, wipe the excess gently with a cloth and spritz with hair spray to seal. If you expect it to get wet, seal it with clear nail polish instead.

Leather Jewelry

Jewelry with a leather cord or base is versatile. Halloween costume jewelry often uses vinyl instead of real leather. Black leather can be part of a vampire, witch, gothic, motorcycle biker or other tough-guy costume. Brown leather in jewelry is popular with hippy costumes, cowboys and Indians.

Gold For the Ancients

If you’re dressing as a Greek God or Goddess, Cleopatra or a Pharaoh then gold is the metal of choice for authenticity. Blackening it as described above for silver will make it look older. You can restore it later on, with jewelry polish. Greek, Roman and Egyptian characters are often depicted with large golden belts, bracelets of varying widths, headbands and anklets.

Beadwork

Hippy costumes have beaded love beads, very long chains of colorful glass “seed beads.” Native American Indian costumes, like Pocahontas will have complicated beadwork including turquoise and tortoise shell.

Gypsy Jewelry

If you’re dressing as a gypsy or fortune teller, you’ll be wearing a variety of mystical symbols and amulets on several different types of cord and chain, in both silver and gold. Several bracelets of varying width and anklets that jingle while you walk also add that special touch to your costume.

Specialty Halloween Jewelry

Costume vendors sell specialty jewelry that you might not wear during the rest of the year, like spider web necklaces that are just perfect for a ghoulish costume. You can also find magnetic piercings to simulate a nose ring, extra earring holes or even a navel piercing for your Genie or Belly Dancer costume.

Glasses

Though they aren’t generally thought of as jewelry, decorative glasses might be an important part of your Halloween costume. You can’t be Harry Potter without the signature glasses. Horn-rimmed glasses are a great addition to any 1950’s costume, whether you’re a Pink Lady from Greece or wearing a poodle skirt to the sock hop. Old Wizard costumes look great with a teeny pair of spectacles perched at the tip of your nose.

As you’re planning your costume, pay attention to your collection of rings, bracelets, anklets and glasses. If your costume calls for a tiara, shop around before the big day. Gathering every bit of your costume is half the fun of dressing up. Make sure all the pieces are in order so that you can look your best.

A Viking costume can be as elaborate or as basic as you want. What’s important is that you truly embrace the Viking experience, and this means calling out the inner warrior inside. Before putting on a football helmet, remember that the Vikings were heathen Scandinavian warriors from around the 8th to 11th centuries A.D. Also called the Norse, they raid and colonized much of Northern Europe, including the British Isles, Normandy and around to Sicily. They explored as far as Newfoundland in Canada, Constantinople in Turkey and even reached as far as Baghdad. If you’re Norse, be proud!

Acknowledge their heroic spirit by being one for the evening. For that, you can simply put on a horned Viking helmet and party like it’s 1099, but Odin would want you to be more elaborate than that.

Being a Viking Warrior

Everybody should know the Viking warrior outfit - there’s the horned helmet, the fur-trimmed tunic or cloak, wrist guards and big fur boots. Basically, if it has dead animals on it, you’re good. Of course, you’ll likely opt for faux-fur trim. Carry a big sword or double-axe, and add a snarl to your face. You are friendly to those you share hearty mead with, but most of the world sees you as a ferocious and feared warrior dude. Long braided hair and a bushy mustache and beard complete your barbarian outfit.

This costume is great for the ladies, too, and her Viking can be a warrior who’s ready for battle, a Viking maiden, or a sexy pillager. In all cases, this is a woman who knows what she wants and how to get it.

A Fearsome Valkyrie

Though most Viking warriors were men, women warriors feature large in Norse literature. Of course, you have to look stylish and sexy too, right? Try an aggressive fur-lined corset and a jagged-edge suede skirt, and use your bad-ass boots to stomp men into the good. The Valkyries were fearsome servants of Odin, flying over the battlefield looking for slain warriors to recruit on Odin’s side in the preordained battle at the end of the world. Because they fly, Viking costumes for women often feature wings on their helmet instead of horns.

If you head to the party as a couple of Vikings, you can have a lot of fun with the other guests at the party. You might threaten to “loot and pillage” anybody who crosses your path (make sure the partygoers are all open to such ribbing) or you might head to the party with dirty hair and an unshaven look. Vikings, after all, don’t have a lot of time to spend on their appearance.

For a fun twist, bring lots of spam, and offer it to your fellow party-goers. Vikings really love spam, according to Monty Python. You don’t have to eat it though - a good mug of ale and a couple mock battles will quench your warrior appetites, until you and your shield maiden head back home together and do battle any way you wish.

The story of Mark Antony and Cleopatra is all about power, desire and, ultimately, tragedy. Cleopatra, the queen of Egypt, puts Roman Anthony under her spell and – in a twist similar to that of Romeo and Juliet – both end up dead, having killed themselves in order to be together.

Yes, it’s a bit sad, but there’s lore about Antony and Cleopatra that makes them interesting (and quintessentially sexy) characters. To get into the character of the beguiling leader Cleopatra and the besotted, yet powerful and forceful, Anthony, is a worthwhile Halloween cause.

Antony and Cleopatra Costumes

To start, you need to think about the kind of Antony and Cleopatra you want to be. That is, you can be Cleopatra in a simple white toga-style gown with a headdress, or you can dress as a much more royal version of Cleopatra, with the jewelry, the gold belt, the royal air. The first is fairly easy to put together at home, while the second might require the purchase or rental of a costume.

Cleopatra has straight black hair (in some versions, that hair is just shoulder length, while others believe her hair would be much longer), so if your hair isn’t straight black, a wig is a must.

Men can incorporate Antony in a variety of ways. Most popular is a white short “dress” or tunic, belted with a gold belt and the head accented with a gold headband. To really add to the Antony allure, be sure to add some hurricane sandals. Find some that reach to the knees if possible. That is an essential part of adding an authentic feel to Antony’s costume.

Acting as a Couple

Now, once the two of you have figured out the costume, figure out how to really wear the costume. Couples who dress as famous couples always get a lot of attention at parties, so play it up. Develop characters for Cleopatra and Antony so that you really bring these characters to life.

How might you do this? First, remember that Cleopatra, as Shakespeare wrote her, is a passionate and strong woman. She’s hopelessly in love with Antony, but she’s no shrinking violet. She commands her own stage.

As for Antony, think strong, powerful and passionate about his country, his life and, especially, about Cleopatra.

The two of you, in fact, should command attention not just for the costumes but for the sense of passion that you exude for each other and for the characters you are playing. Together, Antony and Cleopatra were a force to contend with.

For the couple who wants to add a little spice (or maybe bring some spice back into the relationship), this couple’s costume is ideal. Look deep into each other’s eyes and remember what it was like to have that kind of world-making passion for each other. You remember it from the start of your relationship and if you think about it, you can recall how it felt. Bring that to the fore.

Finally, use this costuming idea to highlight the fun and frolic of a costume party. You’re going to get attention; play it up and have a good time it with it. It’s our guess that Antony and Cleopatra would love a good party - let them live vicariously through you!

If you don’t really understand the concept of a gypsy, consider the famous Cher song, “Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves”. In it, Cher introduces us to a gypsy woman by telling us, “she was born in the wagon of a traveling show” and her mother “used to dance for the money they’d throw.”

Gypsies are often seen as those who constantly travel (aka “No Fixed Address”), selling or doing whatever they can to survive. They carry with them an aura of mystery and intrigue that stems not just from their adventurous spirit, but also their skills at fortune telling and palm reading.

Wearing a Gypsy Costume

To bring a little gypsy into your Halloween, consider our tips.

First, think mystery, mixed with a bit of dangerous magic. That’s your buzz word. What’s sexier than a woman of mystery anyway? The gypsy woman is full of that, along with various other unconventional qualities.

Your version of the mystery woman might read palms, or she might do a little fortune telling (and hopefully your fortune with her is promising). She might need a little money to get her through her days; she might need to do a few favors to get a few favors.

Second, think about sexiness. Perhaps the sexiest quality of the gypsy woman is her wild and unpredictable ways, all the while looking flirtatious and feminine in her bawdy dress and dangling jewelry.
