My friend Brian Audia at Surgance has connected me with a group called Stop Child Trafficking Now, or SCTNow for short. They are mobilizing teams of military trained professionals to monitor to bust sex trafficking rings — bringing to justice both the suppliers and those who are demanding child prostitution.

To support the cause, the are hosting benefit walks in major cities all across the country on September 27th. SCTNow would like at 1,000+ people to walk here in Vegas, and I think they can count me on being one of the 1000+. I can already imagine people from all different backgrounds out there with me. It’s fun to think of the church people and prostitutes both coming out to protect children from slavery. I can also imagine casino workers and strippers and government officials and small business owners; agnostics, Christians, Buddhists, and atheists.

The founders of SCTNow are Ron and Lynette Lewis. Both are dynamic speakers on the evangelical Christian circuit, who desire to use their influence to motivate people toward change. Samples of their talks can be found on their websites and podcasts, and I’ve enjoyed what I’ve listened to so far.

This is just a brief look at what SCTNow is doing. I hope you’ll do me a favor and check out www.sctnow.org. Then come back and let me know what you think. Would you walk on Sept 27th?

It’s been a while since I’ve updated this blog, and I wanted to take second the buckle down write get something out to you all. In the least I can write life update, and at best I will tell you something is encouraging, or useful, or the insightful.

Here are a few highlights of what I’ve been doing since Christmas…

- I took a trip to California to visit friends of the family. I had a fantastic time visiting, and even took a day trip to Napa. It was slightly rainy, but the grey was overshadowed by the beauty of the late winter green of the valley. I’ve had an interest in the viniculture for months, and it was SO fun to see the vineyards in person. I’ve sense bought three merlots and three cabernet sauvignons, which are the beginning of my own small vineyard. The vines will take years to mature, so I tell my friends that I’m on a 10 year plan… For more practical immediate purposes, I’ve also planted vegetables in my front yard.

- I have not been writing as many church reviews, because responsibilities at my own church have increased. My blog has fallen prey to the typical tension between breadth and depth. Where previously I was able visit a variety of churches, my constant movement prohibited me from being able to build into the lives of the Christians in my own community. For the time being, I must focus there, and will be unable to write church reviews in the near future. You will probably see a shift in focus for this blog, but I hope you will still find the information here at Sexy Religion to be an interesting read and helpful resource.

- I’ve been taking computer programming classes for College of Southern Nevada, which has eaten into my time energy. The basic Java and SQL skills that I learn this summer will help me to work with programmers in the future, and help me manage any future website projects that I see on the far horizon.

- My friends and I have been volunteering on a business startup called Grace Village Vegas. It’s a for profit venture that seeks to give 30% of it’s profits to mobilize volunteers and workers for community development. It also hopes to establish standards of the excellence based on Christ-like values. GVV is committed to challenging its employees toward love, joy, peace, patience, goodness, kindness, gentleness, and self-control. The business is still in the very early stages (it’s still working through the incorporation process), but they have already started planning community development projects. I’ll probably be volunteering for these projects, so I’ll keep you posted.

Alright, my lunch break is about over, so I better say goodbye for now. I’ll try to post again sooner rather than later.

Club within, an island of calm, safety, helps children find path to success

I’ve spent some time at Club Christ helping kids with their homework and going on a couple field trips. The way they handle their outreach is straight forward and honest. No qualms are made about why they are there: They love Jesus, they love these children, and they believe that Jesus is the best thing for these children. In a neighborhood once known as “40 Block” because the dominant gang would mark its territory with the vodka bottles, Club Christ has been not only a symbol but a real presence of grace and peace.

I may write more about Club Christ later. For now, I want to make sure you didn’t miss the Vegas Sun article.

This year’s International Bake Christmas Cookies for Whomever Day is December 13th. Sponsored by a grass-roots movement emerging from Las Vegas, NV, participants will be baking cookies to give to neighbors, orphans, prisoners, coworkers, the homeless, and whomever is cookie-less in this world. The movement has already spread to Washington DC, is has the potential to grow viral!

A Facebook Group has been sponsored to organize the movement, and individuals are being encouraged to create YouTube videos describing their personal interaction with cookie-less-ness. IBCCW will probably take-up a lot of my time in the coming two weeks, but I hope to crank out a Christmas Church guide in the midst of the ever-changing-&-demanding cookie logistics.

In the mean time, check out the Facebook Group here!

I told you this one was coming, and I’m not going to let this slip away. I went to South-Hills this morning and listened to Porn Pastor Craig Gross about porn, love, and Jesus. When I get a chance, that is if they post today’s talk on the South-Hills website, I’ll post the MP3 so you can hear it first-hand (MP3 Here). Craig was interviewed just this past week for an article that ran in this morning’s Las Vegas Sun. Check out the article here.

I’ll try not to make this a boring reiteration of Mike’s article from this morning. Instead, I’m going to take this chance to talk about Craig’s talk, his vision, and why South-Hills supports XXXChurch.com.

Craig’s talk this morning opened with a montage of news clips from ABC, CNN, and other news reports. Since it’s start in 2002, XXXChurch has been receiving mixed reviews across the country. In case their message hasn’t gone far enough, they travel the world, accepting invitations to setup booths and pass-out Bibles at porn conventions. Craig and the rest of the XXXChurch want to the world to know that God loves everybody, and He will fill the desires of those who seek Him.

Craig’s talk today centered around this theme. He suggested that porn isn’t the only thing that can trap us in addiction, but it’s one that influences a large portion of our society. He used a combination of anecdotes and statistics to show that the appeal of the industry is growing. Through the Internet, kids and seniors are finding easier access than ever before to vicariously feed their sex drives, and Craig expressed implicit concern that these are these segments of our population also tend to be the loneliest. Instead of finding consolation in the love of family and friends around them, they fill their needs through strangers who can’t talk back.

The undercurrent of Craig’s talk brought the driving message that real relationships still matter. Husbands can talk to their wives, wives can talk to their husbands, children can talk with their parents, and friends can talk to to each other to share the depths of their spiritual and sexual desires in ways that are healthy and liberating.

Craig knows that pornography isn’t the only habit that people dabble in and quickly find overwhelming. We often pursue products, relationships, and habits that promise to fill our longings, but in the end leave us feeling trapped and wanting. “Porn Sunday” at South-Hills wasn’t only about porn — it was an encouragement to reach out to others in authentic relationship.

XXXChurch.com offers free internet accountability software that is fundamentally relational. Instead of blocking websites, the program sends a weekly e-mail to a friend or family member of choice. if questionable websites were visited, the e-mails will detail the site URLs and when they were visited. During his talk, Craig said, “If you want to stop looking at porn, have the e-mail sent to your mom.” His treatment of the subject showed a lightheartedness and still an awareness and sensitivity to the strain that pornography can place on our everyday relationships.

The vision of XXXChurch is to bring people together in relationship, so they can understand the unconditional relational love that God has for his people. Men and women, boys and girls who are embarrassed to speak with their spouses or parents are liable to feel similar shame in their relationship with God. If God is real and He truly does love as the Bible describes, then people should know by the way Christians act and love. XXXChurch wants to raise up Christians who love like that.

South-Hill’s vision is similar. Their motto is “Making Jesus Famous in Las Vegas and to the Nations.” They strive to make him famous for his love, and they know they can only do that if they love too. This makes the friendship between XXXChurch and South-Hills a natural fit. Their fundamental ends and means are very similar, even though they typically reach out to people from different starting points. South-Hills thrives in getting people together. Their attempts to connect people and share love can sometimes feel like a “community social” or “mixer”, but their hope is to use those times to show everybody love in community — a love that is inspired and empowered by Christ. South-Hills invites others into their community. XXXChurch has stepped out to become a part of their community. Both are working to raise up a people that loves like Jesus. I can only imagine what it would look like if they begin gain significant traction, but it’s obvious that both churches are beginning and will continue to have an impact on the Vegas valley.

(MP3 of talk found here.)

I hope that readers have, and will continue to find this site helpful.

The church reviews provided through this site are the most tangible way I have found to give a mutual introduction for familiar with church culture and those who don’t know what to expect from a Christian church.

There should be more posts in the coming months, especially as the summer winds down and the fall/winter schedule kicks in. Within the next few weeks, be on the lookout for about Mountaintop Faith Ministries and the book Stripped by Jud Wilhite.

Thanks for coming on this journey with me. I hope you will keep reading and be on the lookout for new material. Peace!

Soon after arriving in Vegas, I met with one of Roy’s friends named Aric. We grabbed dinner at Quiznos and before we began eating, Aric asked if we could read a passage from the Bible. He told me that it was his custom whenever possible not to eat without first reading from scripture. Being our first time meeting, I was a little surprised, but it didn’t take much thought to say, “Sure thing.”

“Do you have a particular passage you would like to share?” I’ve grown to believe that Aric finds slight pleasure in putting his friends on the spot, but it’s only because he cares enough about his friends to learn what they truly believe and what they pour their heart into.

Part of me was grasping at straws, the other knew exactly which one to pick. “I don’t remember what chapter its in, but one of my favorite chapters is in the book of Ezekiel. It tells of how Ezekiel was walking around the temple, and there was water pouring out from underneath of it. As he walked around, the waters kept rising and rising until he was covered in them. The chapter should be about 2/3 the way through the book.”

Aric flipped through the pages as I sat in awkward silence with my food sitting untouched in front of me. “I don’t see it.”

“I think it’s around chapter 33 or 36. If you can’t find it, feel free to choose a different one.”

Aric didn’t find it, so he chose a chapter about the building of the city walls. It honestly felt really long, and I tried my best to pay attention. When he was done, we prayed and ate and reflected on the passage. Eventually, as Aric and I continued to talk about city walls, things began to click, and this is what I learned that night.

Las Vegas is like a city without spiritual walls. Where city walls usually serve to keep harm on the outside, the lie about Vegas is that our cultural walls to keep our secrets here: “What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas.” Jerusalem built walls to protect its people from outside invaders, but Las Vegas builds casinos and hotels to invite people in and accrue large profits as their guests openly indulge in activities they would normally hide when they’re at home.

It dawned on me that in order to visibly display the true heart of Christianity to people down on the strip, the church in Las Vegas first needs to establish strong spiritual walls. My mind began spinning as I thought of prominent and growing churches of the Vegas suburbs that form a circle around the Strip: Central Christian, South-Hills, St. Thomas More, Hope Baptist, Valley Bible, ICLV, Canyon Ridge and The Dream Center to name a few. Through they’re visibility and influence, these churches represent potential strongholds and towers of Las Vegas’ spiritual walls.

The walls of this metaphor can’t merely be images of the culture war that typically manifests between the Christian right and the libertinism of Vegas culture — these walls must represent the safety of community. I believe that many of the people I have met in Vegas desire long-term relationships, but they have found that commitment is idealistic and seldomly achieved. The gambling, alcohol, illegal drugs, and sex each provide an outlet for interaction, but strong community is built on more than interaction. Community relies heavily on the consistency and stability of commitment.

If the Church can couple a radical relational commitment with a passion for the person of God in Christ, they may be able to share life transforming power and love with hurting people here in the valley. Yet, this is only if they can show radical relational commitment with each other. Right now, there are significant congregations outlining the Vegas valley, but the question of their commitment to each other still remains. Are these towers of Christian faith standing alone, or have they built walls of cooperation that will make them strong? If they show love and commitment for one another, then there is a reasonable hope that they can show love and commitment to those who prefer the strip to the church building. If each stand on their own, then how will the Church ever be a viable presence on the Strip?
