Review

A bunch of good friends gathered at Tower Bar on Friday night to bid farewell to Andy and Jayme Ralph, also known as the duo Writer. The City Heights venue overflowed with people by the time Chairs Missing kicked off the night.

Feature

Morgan’s art is both cinematic and sinister, inspired by boyhood fantasies and a fascination with the American West portrayed in pop culture. We met up with Morgan at his East Village studio where he fed us cold Hawaiian pizza and entertained us with his "adult magazine" collection while talking about his work in his upcoming show The Sun Hung Low or A Question Loomed set to open at Habitat House next Wednesday. read more...

Release The Kraken!

Review

Don and Dylan of Subtext Gallery scavenged yard sales and thrift stores for the first half of the year, on the hunt for vintage, wood-framed sea scape paintings. After collecting around thirty pieces, they passed them out to an all-star cast of mostly local artists, who were instructed to "krakenize" them. The August group show, Release The Kraken! , doubled as a five year anniversary for the Little Italy gallery. Check out a few photos from the opening below, and a whole album on ... read more...

Endless Summer is becoming an annual staple in San Diego's art scene. After last year's opening at the Suture loft downtown, curator Angella D'Avignon brought Endless Summer II to Golden Hill's Habitat House . This year's summer-themed group show included some regular characters (Preston, Heslip, Forrest, and Zappas), along with a batch of new artists with their own flare. There was a mini beach in the living room, a teepee in the backyard, and MIHO Gastrotruck streetside.

Feature

The Tree Ring has been a home-bodied band in terms of performing almost exclusively in San Diego over the past few years, but the truth is that everyone except Darla grew up in the Pacific Northwest.

Feature

This morning we asked followers of Sezio and supporters of art and music in San Diego County to respond to a lack of funding for Sezio from our local government. Hundreds of you took the time to write thoughtful, eloquent emails directed towards Supervisors Ron Roberts and Greg Cox, and Councilmembers Todd Gloria and Kevin Faulconer. Artists and musicians, fans and patrons, small business owners and local media members all showed their immense support for our organization and efforts in San Diego, and for that we are endlessly grateful for you. read more...

Andrew Heine, Dogcatcher Release KILR

News

Sezio sprouted from a white house on Ebers Street in Ocean Beach, California. At any given time there was someone screen printing in the garage, painting on the front porch and playing piano in living room or guitar on the roof. There was no lack of creative outlets or inspiration. The ring leader of this house was Andrew Heine, a multi-instrumental musician who also pursued fine art , sharpie tagging, and graphic design. When Andrew wasn't in band practice for Blackout Party or Irradio, ... read more...

Clea Minaker : Light & Shadow

Feature

Back in December 2010 I came across a film called “Look at What the Light Did Now”. The film reveals the creative process of a colorful group of individuals working in different disciplines toward a common goal. One of the artists involved used light and shadow to illustrate stories on a huge forty-foot screen. After seeing the film, I got up the next day and sent an email inviting her to come to San Diego to partner with the Museum of Contemporary Art’s Teen Art Council and with Sezio. It was a shot in the dark. I had already set my expectation to never hear back. But I did hear back, and to our wonderful surprise the shot in the dark will bring the artist to San Diego in April for an entire week. read more...

Hailing from the concrete jungle of Brooklyn, Miniature Tigers boast a well balanced brand of pop-infused punch with the occasional unexpected dance-y hook.

I first saw this painting hanging on the wall at El Take It Easy as part of a solo Enrique Ciapara show. I was in a business meeting shoved in a booth and trying to be professional. I was so taken by the jaunty shapes and raw strokes of this piece that I found myself staring at it for the duration of drinks. The colors are muted and seem municipal - grass greens, cement greys and backyard fence browns crowd around one long strip of bright blue making a dreamy mirage of a city... read more...

Review

Josh Higgins curated a one-of-a-kind art show opening January 17th at Blind Lady Alehouse in Normal Heights. Gathering a collection of skateboarders, designers and cultural tastemakers, Higgins invited each participant to submit a batch of photos to the show.

Review

Habitat House opened their doors, more specifically their walls, for the debut solo show of San Diego artist / illustrator Kelli Murray , and the inaugural art opening at the Golden Hill residence, venue, and now gallery. Kelli decked the living room out with birch branches, flowy fabrics, a batch of new paintings, and a giant carved moose head. Below are a few shots from the opening and an interview with Kelli about the show.

Hey Dummy! I'm talking to you! Drop by The Casbah this Friday night (02.18) to catch Dum Dum Girls . You might remember Kristin Gundred (aka Dee Dee Dum Dum) hanging up clothes at The Buffalo Exchange on 5th Ave a couple years back..now see her on her (kindof) hometown stage in those famous striped tights with the rest of the Dum Dum Girls, and get dum over their smart, skuzzy, girl group garage rock. The opening acts are nothing to scoff at either. The pretty, gauzy noise of Broo... read more...

Jorge Tellaeche : "Animals R Dishonest"

Feature

We were first introduced to Jorge's bright, colorful work through the Adapta vs. Sezio series in 2008. His intricate line work and vibrant colors reflected the bright surroundings of his residence in Tijuana, Mexico. Mr. Tellaeche has since returned to his home town of Mexico City, where his craft has soared to new heights. We caught up with Jorge to discuss his recent homecoming exhibit entitled "Animals R Dishonest". read more...

<img src="http://www.sezio.org/pix/feature/129423210240327973_Jorge-Review.jpg" alt="Jorge Tellaeche : "Animals R Dishonest""/>

Chairs Missing : FILTER / Dickies Session

News

Late in January we made a day trip to LA with Chairs Missing and Writer. Before both bands joined The Fling at The Satellite (Spaceland) that evening, they stopped by FILTER Magazine's HQ to record some live sessions in the Dickies Garage. Chairs Missing ran through a few tracks, and then drummer Dave Mead promptly hopped into a Dickies jump suit and strutted down Sunset.
Photo above taken by Michael Allen Spear, view more from the day here .
