Happy March Bay Area Spartans!

The rain has stopped, the days are longer and that can not only mean that there is madness in the air. This Friday the MSU Men’s Basketball Team begins their quest for a second straight Final Four as they take on the Aggies of New Mexico State in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament.

Your MSU Alumni Association will be hosting a “happy hour” watch party this Friday afternoon at a new place: Zeke’s Sports Bar in San Francisco. Pete’s is so jammed during March Madness we thought this place a block away would be worth a shot.

Game time is a little early at 4:25pm, but we hope that many of you can try to think of a creative method to sneak out of work a little early to help root MSU on to victory.

Watch Party, Spartans vs Gophers

Now that the season of 4pm weekday and 9am Sat/Sun morning MSU basketball games are behind, March Madness is in full swing! We have coming up in the next few weeks many exciting MSU sporting events taking place. We have the MSU Men’s hockey team fighting to try and make it back to the Frozen Four (which they won a few years back!), and we have the MSU Men’s Basketball Team looking to make it back-to-back trips to the Final Four. Of course, do not forget about the MSU Women’s Basketball team who finished the season ranked in the Top 25 looking to make a deep tourney run as well.

Because game times and scheduling will be very quick and brief, I ask that you please keep checking back to our site www.sfbayspartans.org for up to the minute watch party locations and events coming up. Thank you for your continued support as we roll into my favorite time of year !

The first March Madness Watch Party will be tomorrow night as your Spartans take on the Gophers. A perfect Friday Happy Hour tip-off time!

Club Event: Broomball

Broomball! Saturday, April 10 from 3:45 – 4:45 p.m..

We have reserved the San Mateo Ice Center with the U of M Alumni Club for a few games of BROOMBALL. The fee is $12 per adult and no charge for kids under 18.

The rink provides brooms, helmets and balls, but be sure to bring warmer clothes (since we are running on ice) and your own gloves or protective wear that you feel you need. Children are welcome, but if they are under 18, parents must fill out a waiver beforehand which can be found at the San Mateo Ice Center website below.

Afterward, we will meet up at BJ’s restaurant next-door for some drinks and nourishment.

Club Event: Red Wings vs Sharks

It’s HockeyTime!

Your Detroit Red Wings play the San Jose Sharks at HP Pavilion in San Jose on Tuesday, Feb 2nd at 7:30pm. The MSU and U of M Alumni Clubs of the Bay Area are joining together to secure a block of tickets for all Detroit hockey fans. These are two strong teams and demand will be high, so make sure to get your payment in early to ensure your seats!

Tickets are $40 (sections 221-224, 226, 227) or $50 (sections 217, 218, 226, 227), and you can choose which price you’d like until we run out of one of the available blocks.

Michigan State Gets Texas Tech in Alamo Bowl

Michigan State is headed to San Antonio after accepting an invitation to play in the Alamo Bowl on Jan 2. The Spartans will face Big 12 representative Texas Tech.

This will be the third bowl trip for MSU (6-6, 4-4 Big Ten) in three seasons under coach Mark Dantonio.

“It will be an exciting opportunity for us to go play Texas Tech,” Dantonio said. “They have a very exciting offense and bring a lot to the table in that regard. It’s an outstanding opportunity for our football team – it’s a chance to step back and rise up once again.”

Michigan State guard Kalin Lucas is featured on one of Sports Illustrated’s six regional covers for this week’s college basketball preview. The mag has the Spartans ranked No. 2 (behind Kansas) and put Lucas on its preseason All-America second team.

Happy Pre-Halloween Weekend Bay Area Spartans!

With the season just a little over half way complete the Spartans look to continue their winning ways as they battle the Iowa Hawkeyes this Saturday Night at Spartan Stadium. This is the first true big game of the year as Iowa is currently ranked No. 7 in the nation and is undefeated coming into the game.

With a win this weekend, MSU can really turn this year around! The game starts at 4pm PST (not 9am yay!) and will be viewed at the normal spots in Palo Alto (Old Pro), San Francisco (Pete’s Tavern), and Walnut Creek (Stadium Pub).

As an added bonus, I am personally organizing a mini Palo Alto Bar Crawl immediately following the game win or lose. We will rock out in Palo Alto! So come on out and watch MSU march into first place in the Big Ten!

MSU is on a roll winning their last 2 games in a row! This week they try to go over the .500 mark for the first time since week 1 as they take on the Wildcats of Northwestern.

Game time is at 9am here on the West Coast and we will be having our watch events at our typical 3 locations in Palo Alto (Old Pro), San Francisco (Pete’s Tavern), and Walnut Creek (Stadium Pub). So plan to come on out, get a friend to join you, and let’s watch MSU roll their way to another victory together!

Big 10 & Big 12 Happy Hour

BIG BIG Happy Hour, Thursday, October 15th at 5:30pm!

Big 10 and Big 12 Alumni are joining together for a BIG BIG Happy Hour at Pete’s Tavern in San Francisco on Thursday, October 15th. It will start at 5:30 pm and will host a slew of schools from our basketball rival, Kansas, to the Red River Rivalry teams of Oklahoma State and University of Texas. It will be a great opportunity to network with some new people, show some school pride or just have some drinks and laughs. Hope to see you there!

After a dramatic win against the Wolverines to keep the Paul Bunyan Trophy in East Lansing for another year, the Spartans are gearing up for a battle with the Illini on the road in Champaign.

Here’s your Saturday morning football drink recipes…

Mimosa Recipe:
- 11 fresh oranges, squeezed and juiced
- Champagne
- shaken with crushed ice (optional)
- garnish with an orange twist

Victory Recipe:
- 11 orange jerseys, squeezed without Juice
- Champagne
- shaken and crushed Illini (definitely)
- garnish with a Spartan FIST

Come out and enjoy a Mimosa and a Victory this Saturday morning with your fellow Bay Area Alumni while we and cheer on our Spartan Football team against the Illinois Fighting Illini.
