Hello!
Have been receiving a couple of emails asking about my whereabouts so I decided to come out of the darkness and give a shout to let you guys know that all is well and fine. Still can't find the comminment needed to continue breeding bettas.

Though I'm not breeding bettas, that hasn't kept me away from the water at all. As you guys know I've been into planted aquariums after my stint with bettas and boy... Planted Aquariums are just as educational and fun as breed bettas.

It has been around 2 years since my betta has spawned, sad to say most of them are now no longer around. From a spawn of about 200 bettas, I have 10 of them still swimming around =) and I am very happy to point out that their Mummy is still going strong! LONG LIVE THE QUEEN!

A good number of them succrumb to dropsy, most of them suffered from swim bladder disease during the later part of their lives. They are unable to sink and stayed afloat most of the time.
Life and death is part and parcel of live and with bettas they come and go a lot faster than us.

To all who use this site as a reference and guide to pick up this hobby, I thank you for trusting my collection of information.

Due to work/family/life commitments, I am unable to cater to the increasing emails inquiries and unfulfilled pick-up arrangements. As I've stated, my stock shop was never meant as a profit generating scheme, rather it's to cater provision for any who wishes to get started in this wonderful hobby.

What I'm proposing is rather simple. If you have microworms that you would like to share, just post the details in this post's comments. Readers who are interested will contact you for microworms. FAQ: Do you ship your betta/microworm overseas?
Answer: No. Unfortunately I do not intend to start an online payment scheme (anytime soon), as such overseas shipping is not possible. All sales are intended for local purchase; in Singapore only.
FAQ: Where are you located?
Answer: In the east, Bedok North.

FAQ: When can I make an appointment for viewing?
Answer: I am usually free after office hours and during weekends.

FAQ: Can I meet you and pick up my purchase from MRT stations or bus interchange.
Answer: No. Some buyers have left me stranded in stations. As of such all purchase will be made at my place.

FAQ: I am a really busy man, can you deliver to my place?
Answer: Yes, but additional charge will be billed. This is to compensate my traveling time and cost.

AFK for a little bit

I am sorry for the slow or rather no update to sgBetta.com for the past month. You see I've graduated from NTU sometime back in June and have started work around last month. So the spawning project will be put on hold until I've adjusted into the routine of day to day grinding.

I've also toyed with planted tanks 3 months ago and thus diverted a little attention towards that area.

I do not intend to wind up sgBetta.com anytime soon, so no worries regarding that. Updates will come eventually, even though they might be slow. Would like to thank all you guys for the support so far. Thank you!

Let male betta fight to induce breeding

Got an advice, from someone I know personally, to allow male bettas a fight before breeding to induce a successful spawn. This was from someone who breed betta a long time ago, he advise that if a particular male is having a hard time spawning, allowing him a fight just before introducing the female could yield better chance of a successful spawn. I am guessing the fight could suggest to the male that it is spawning season. Will try it out, under a controlled environment.

For some strange reason the male ate all the eggs up during the night (again). His belly was really bloated after eating all the eggs. Well at least I didn't have to wait too long to get a result this time. If anyone has any suggestions, feel free to comment; I'm running out of ideas. I will be giving both the male and female betta a longer break this time, I do not want to over-exert either of them.

Looking good so far, the male has took good care of the eggs. At least a quater of the total eggs has been eaten, I am guessing those are unfertilized eggs. This is the correct thing for the male betta to do as rotting eggs will grow fungus, spreading to the rest of the healthy eggs. Tank is neat and tidy with no stray eggs on the floor. Hopefully I will see some tails tommorrow.

As of now spawning is completed. I've remove the female and allow her to recuperate in a 1 gallon tank.

The betta pair started spawning this afternoon. If things goes as trend, the embrace should end around the evening. After 2 previous attempt, the male betta still has not learn the proper embrace. He is warping the female from the front, covering her head. A proper embrace should result in the male warping around the female from the top. Well only time will tell if this attempt is successful.

20 hours into the spawning session and no sign of embrace yet. The male betta's nest is big and nicely built. The ball is in the female's court now, hopefully she will decide to embrace tonight.

Hopefully third time is a charm. Placed the female betta in a jar to prevent unnecessary injuries. Will release her before going to bed, if the trend follows, they will embrace tomorrow morning.

Breeding Bettas: Live food cause male betta to consume fry?

It might be nonsense, but my Mum was suggesting that feeding live mini mealworms to the male betta might have gave him a liking to live food; thus consuming the newly hatched fry. I rejected the thought at first, but come to think of it, it might be true. I didn't feed any live food to my first breeding betta pair and all went too well on the first try.

Well there is no harm in conditioning the pair with good quality food and that's what I'm going to do. No live food for the male betta prior to breeding.

Second F2 spawning unsuccessful

Was pretty exciting to check the nest today but I did not like what I saw. The nest was gone, almost as if the male betta tore it down. There were no eggs in sight, non was there any sign of life.

Another failure, though there are improvements this time round. There are no visible fungus, which meant that the male had took good care of the eggs. And I did saw one, just one, dead fry drop from the nest. At least I know some fry hatched from the eggs. Obviously the male betta didn't know how to tend to the fry once they hatch, betta males are known to be very persistent; they will try jamming a dead fry back into the nest again and again, but for my betta case, he just let the dead fry drop to the ground. I have a strong feeling the male betta ate all the fry once they hatched. I tried feeding him a juicy mini mealworm but he took a sniff at the worm and ignore it; a sign that he has already eaten to his fill.

The remains of what looks like eggs/shells are scattered all over the tank's floor. The male seemed awfully exhausted or upset; he is lying around, sleeping.

No lucky at the female side too, no sign of eggs or life in the nest. Hopefully third time is a charm. Will restart the spawning in 1-2 weeks time, depending on the female. Hopefully this time the male will not destroy the fry.

Female betta built bubble nest and take care of eggs

This is truly breaking news. I was just doing a water change for the female when I realize that her bubblenest contains more than just bubbles, there are eggs in it. Around 30 eggs.

First thing first, females are not supposed to build strong thick bubble nest, mine did.

Second they are not supposed to guard their nest, mine did.

Third they are more likely to eat all the eggs up, mine not only did not eat the eggs, she is taking care of them.

During spawning, if you are lucky you will have a female that will not eat the eggs but she will help with placing the eggs in the nest. Mine is more than lucky, she built her own nest and is taking care of the eggs like the father. Most likely these eggs are not fertilized, but I might be wrong, she might have store them in her mouth long enough for me to transfer her to the recuperating tank. Anyway this is truly amazing.

24 hours after betta mating

No news is good news, 24 hours after embracing, there are no sign of life yet. Normal. Best thing is there are no visible fungus and all eggs are where they should be, in the nest. Mr betta is taking good care of his eggs this time. Instead of switching the aquarium light on, like I did last session, I turn it off. It seems that this particular betta gets irritated by the aquarium light, he seemed more at ease without the light. Point to take note for first timer trying breeding. At night, I just switch on the room's light.

The pair started actual embrace at around 3pm, ending at around 6pm. This time the mating took around 3 hours.

It wasn't all fun and games, at one point the male nip the female so hard she hid under the driftwood and "leak" eggs. I estimated around 30 eggs was wasted during that time.

I am not too optimistic regarding the current mating session. The male did not wrap over the female from the top. Instead he did a novelty act, warping her from the side and the female eject her eggs rather prematurely after the warp. This was exactly what happened last mating session.
The female is taken from the breeding tank for recuperation in a 1 gallon tank. Fins are pretty badly damage. Looks like she needs a very long break to recover. If this mating session is another failure, a retry should come in 4 weeks time or until her fins have heal up. I do not want to risk losing my only butterfly female.

As predicted the pair started to rehearse their embrace today. Hopefully the male betta will get it right this time and embrace the female correctly by wrapping around her fully.

Introduced the pair for the second time. This time I've place the female in a protective tube (basically a cut-out plastic bottle) to prevent unnecessary injuries while the male build his nest. This time I will be the inspector, inspecting the bubble nest periodically. Once the nest is large and strong enough, I will release the female, hopefully they will get right into mood.
