Tanjong Pagar Centre, set to become Singapore’s tallest building upon its completion in 2016 has its design revealed recently.

Positioned as a premier quality business and lifestyle hub, the 1.7-million-square-foot Tanjong Pagar Centre will provide a mix of uses, comprising office, residential, retail and hospitality, in Singapore’s historic Tanjong Pagar central business district. The development will be a significant contribution to the evolving skyline of Singapore and will become a landmark destination, serving as a gateway to the future waterfront city.

The centerpiece of the project will be a re-designed Tanjong Pagar City Park to create unique public spaces that provide activity and open space to visitors. The free-standing 20-story mid-rise tower to the west will accommodate the luxury business hotel and its amenities, including restaurants, a conference center, gym, and pool deck overlooking the Tanjong Pagar City Park.

The six-story podium will provide multiple levels of car parking, retail, restaurants, and entertainment, as well as the hotel, office, and residential lobby and amenities level. A large public component includes a “city room,” which will feature public art and outdoor performance areas, ground-level retail, and an underground pedestrian network that will connect to the existing MRT station.

The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), a sister company of The Economist, attempts to measure which country will provide the best opportunities for a healthy, safe and prosperous life in the years ahead.

Its quality-of-life index links the results of subjective life-satisfaction surveys—how happy people say they are—to objective determinants of the quality of life across countries. Being rich helps more than anything else, but it is not all that counts; things like crime, trust in public institutions and the health of family life matter too. In all, the index takes 11 statistically significant indicators into account.

What does all this, and likely developments in the years to come, mean for where a baby might be luckiest to be born in 2013? After crunching its numbers, the EIU has Switzerland comfortably in the top spot, with Singapore sixth.

People living in Singapore are more materialistic and less satisfied with life than their American counterparts and thus have a lower desire for children, says a team led by Norman P. Li of Singapore Management University who examined factors related to attitudes toward marriage and the importance of having children in both the US and Singapore.

The study also points out that as Singaporean women had higher materialistic standards, they also placed higher emphasis on potential mates’ earning capacity. Results suggest a consideration of psychological variables such as life satisfaction, materialism, and mate preferences may lead to a better understanding of larger-scale socioeconomic issues, including low fertility rates among developed East Asian countries.

It is apparently at least in part for this reason that the fertility rate in Singapore, at 1.09 births per woman’s lifetime, is about half the U.S. fertility rate of 2.05, the researchers say.

Singapore is richer than many other countries while Singaporeans are less happier. Are we asking too much?

HDB is continuing to offer convenience for the public by launching an Android version with a suite of new services, including registration for HDB Resale Seminars for resale flat buyers and sellers and the Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Courses for real estate Salespersons, maintenance feedback for industrial properties, push notifications for Build-To-Order (BTO) sales launches (iPhone only), and a feature to show nearby HDB car parks (iPhone only).

Among these services, carpark services are quite noticeable. It is estimated that 90,000 motorists will benefit from the services. No need to visit or queue at the HDB branches to carry out season parking tickets. Season tickets can be renewed in less than 2 minutes using mobile devices. Also, active carpark information can be accessed.

First launched in Oct 2010, Mobile@HDB have been making efforts to deliver a winning service to customers.
