My new goal

Today, i’ve told my boss that in the next half year i’ll start to slowly make a transition out of my life as a web-developer and start working more on my skills in music, from DJing to producing music. The reason for this decision is that I’m not happy anymore developing web-applications.
I don’t have the desire to learn more in this area, I’m not excited about learning new ways of doing things. And being on the edge of things.

When i was fifteen i was fascinated by the web, i was eager to learn how the web works.
I started by learning HTML, learn CSS. After a while i was interested in making dynamic websites, working with databases. In school i learned what i had to learn to pass tests, to have more time investing in my knowledge about the web.

By the age of eighteen i had the confidence to send out job-applications and start working on a few projects. After a year working after school i realized that i could work as a web-developer and quit going to school and start as a freelancer. It didn’t work out that well but i worked as a web-developer. One year later icomedias, a company in Graz, hired me full-time and i moved out of my parents to Graz. I still had the motivation to learn more and more to get better. I learned how XSLT works, leaned more about different Javascript-frameworks and Accessibility. After one and a half year working there i saw an job offer at wollzelle. I applied for it, got hired and moved to Vienna. In the past 16 months i worked on a couple of very interesting projects, including fluxiom.

The whole time working as a web-developer my interest in web-development, and everything around it, got suppressed by my interest in music. Now i have the same ambition to learn more about music as i had with learning about the web, when i was fifteen.

I love music. And I’ll do everything to get to the point where DJs play my music at gigs and I play their music at my gigs. Some people may think that this is a goal that is hard to reach and that i should not give up my day-job.

It may seem crazy, yes. But it in the long term it wouldn’t be good for the company I’m working for because I would go to work only thinking about getting home to work with music and not focusing on my actual work. It would also not be good for me because I wouldn’t be happy at what i do for living.

One thing I’ve learned in my life so far is that everyone can do everything as long as it makes them happy. I would never make a life-changing decision when i didn’t know that i have the motivation to go all the way till I reach my goal, including all the ups and downs.

In the next half year I’ll start to un-follow tech-people on twitter, unsubscribe blogs from people writing about the web. I’ll cancel accounts on sites related to (web-)technology and programming. I’ll archive everything related to programming on backup disks. I’m doing this so I can totally focus on Music. I’ll start reading more about music, about software to make music, find sources to learn everything there is to know about music.

I know some things about making music and mixing music and I’m very eager and excited to improve my knowledge and skills.

fluxapi - Fluxiom API Wrapper

I just deployed my first RubyGem on GitHub (and it is also my first own public git-repository)

Since there wasn’t already a ruby-wrapper for the Fluxiom-API and i plan on doing some stuff with the api, i started writing one.

You can install it by adding http://gems.github.com to you gem-sources and install the “bastilian-fluxapi”-gem

$ gem sources -a http://gems.github.com
$ sudo gem install bastilian-fluxapi

You also can get the source on github.
The wrapper is based on HTTParty, which is awesome and makes writing api-wrapper insanely easy.

Must-Attend-Concerts in Austria and near Austria in 2009

In 2009 there are three events i’m planning to go to.

The first concert i want to go to is the Oasis in Vienna on the 28th February. I haven’t listen to much of them, but i think it is a band you have to see.

On the 1st of March Soulflfy is giving a concert in Vienna. I’m not a big fan of Soulfly, but if Max Cavalera is going on stage with the same power as his younger brother does when performing as MixHell it is a “must”.

After the Soulfly concert i’ll fuel up till the 28th of May for the Urban Art Forms festival in Wiesen, Austria. The UAF-festival has always been a part of my yearly vacation schedule. It is one of the most unique festivals in Austria it is one big party with big acts.
This year it is the fifth year it takes place and it has always been awesome, but this year i will buy the tickets now, not one week before. Because this year Kraftwerk is performing!

The last concert before it is getting really hot in Austria will be the Depeche Mode concert in Bratislava. This year i missed the concert of the Cure here in Vienna, but i won’t miss Depeche Mode!
