Several members of The Usual Suspects played for us around the height of their popularity on Renegade Hardware. The first guest was Chris Lavin, but every other follow-up appearance was Keaton. He’s a nice guy and was patient enough to hang at my house while I hurriedly did my taxes before a show in 2001. I remember popping in a tape of his set at The End and it freaking him out a little, so he frantically tried to find the eject button because he hated to listen to himself DJ…I guess the same way some people hate hearing their own voice recordings. All in all he was a very cool guy and a perfect guest.

Here’s a double dose of moody beats for a bitchin’ Friday morning.

First up is the 9th installment of Doc Scott’s Future Beats. He took a multi-month hiatus from the interwebs in order to craft some new music. I suspect one of two of those new tunes, if they’re finished, do appear in this mix. As is the case with all the FB mixes, there is no official tracklist, but the EDJ guys made a go of it in the comments.

DOC SCOTT : FUTURE BEATS VOLUME 9 by docscott31

Next up, and not by any means irrelevant (see what I did there?!), is Irrelevant’s mix for The Daily Street. If you’re not familiar with Irrelevant’s work, then you owe it to yourself to check out No Love, Better Off In Me, and Eventide from his EP on Kokeshi entitled I’ll Be Ok. It’s pretty otherworldly stuff.

I’m going to jump into the way-back machine for this set which I found while cruising around Soundcloud this morning.

By 1996, Doc Scott was full bore into the techstep trend on his own label, 31 Records, and the seminal label Metalheadz. He was also dropping epic tracks on Bukem’s Good Looking imprint, namely 1996′s Tokyo Dawn which was featured on the Earth Volume 1 LP. I would think that given the time frame of this mix, the atmospheric vibe through 3/4ths of it, and the fact that Conrad is on it, indicates that he was touring in support of the Earth album.

Given it’s age the recording is very good and Doc Scott’s mixing is very tight. Some of the highs are a little flat, but the bass still has plenty of punch. Conrad is himself and never strays too far afield from his normal lyric output, especially during this time when he and Bukem are becoming drum&bass icons.
