London spans over 1500 square kilometres, quite the area to travel around! This has meant that over the years, the city’s transport infrastructure has been embedded into the very fabric of the UK capital. Commuters, tourists and locals use the transport systems of London every day without thinking twice about their journey. But if you take a moment to really process it, the subterranean tunnels, the hundreds of miles of rail track and fluidity of the borough to borough transport really are an engineering feat to be marvelled at.

These systems take years, if not decades to perfect and are part of London’s long-cultivated personality. Whether you’re visiting Sussex Garden hotels for work or for holiday, the long history and architectural feats that make up the London transport network are worth getting to know, especially if you want to learn a little more about how the city was built. Rome wasn’t built in a day, and neither was the London transport system.

Deptford Train station

Deptford Train Station is thought to be the oldest of its kind in London. Dating back to 1836, it has become one of the most revered in the city, especially in the Greenwich area where it is based. The train station was the oldest passenger service in London and predates the London underground. With the popularity of Greenwich growing with suburban residence, the station endured and was the first part of the Greenwich Railway system, before being expanded into the larger network. Whilst the station might not be amazing to look at, the area of Greenwich is still very popular with tourists due to the amazing views from Greenwich Park, which also plays host to the Cutty Sark and the National Maritime Museum.

Euston

Euston Station was opened in 1837 as the historic terminus of the Birmingham to London Railway line. Originally designed by Philip Hardwick and famous builder William Cubitt, Euston Station’s original form is no longer present, it having been rebuilt in the mid-1960s’. The station itself has become one of the most used train stations in London, often being used as a gateway into the city for those on Central London hotel deals. Euston itself serves much of the North and the North West of England and is the proposed terminus for the new High speed 2 Project from London up through the midlands and into the North of the country.

London Bridge

Not only is London Bridge a historic train station, but a historic area of the city as well. With the bridge itself having had different incarnations back into the Roman era, London Bridge is home to the legendary Borough Market and Globe Theatre. It’s no surprise then, that the station serves many lines on the underground and many inner-city, suburban and national rail services.

The station itself has had a long history too, dating back to 1836. Originally designed with no roof, the station only had two platforms but has now expanded to 15.

Greenwich

Greenwich Railway station is one of the oldest in the city and the first suburban railway station. Serving three different transport lines, North Greenwich is on the Jubilee Line for the Underground and Greenwich station for the Dockland Light Railway service and National Rail. Dating back to 1838, Greenwich Station was originally based in Deptford but moved to Greenwich in a temporary station for two years. The station proper was opened in 1840 and designed by George Smith, still seen today as one of the best looking in London.

Paddington Station

Though not as old as Greenwich, Deptford and Euston, Paddington Station still has a historic resonance for the city. Located in West London and just off of Hyde Park, the station is easy to reach for guests at Grand Royale London Hyde Park and serves Heathrow airport among much of the West of England.

Designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel and opened in 1854, the station has become one of the most famous in London in part due to its affiliation with Paddington Bear int he 1950s’. With much redevelopment having occurred throughout the late 20th century in the broader Paddington area, it’s a testament to the sturdy design and striking arched hall that the station has retained much of its original shape and structure since the Victorian era.

Oldest tube lines in London

The London Underground opened in 1863 and is the oldest underground system in the world. With its first stretch having run between Paddington and Farringdon Street, the first line formed part of what is now the Circle, Hammersmith and City and Metropolitan underground lines. With such a long history, it’s no surprise that the London Underground network has grown to include just under 250 miles of track.

Oldest trains on the London Underground

The oldest trains that are still in service can be found on the Bakerloo Line, which runs between Harrow & Wealdstone in the North West and Elephant & Castle in the South. Dating back to 1972, the train carriages are known for their distinctive seating plans, which include designs much like those found in normal train services.

Museums and attractions

With such a history behind it, it’s no surprise to find that the London Underground and London rail service has been the subject of many museums across the city and in some cases the world. Below are just some of the railway focused museums.

London Transport Museum

Based in Covent Garden, the London Transport Museum is a museum that focuses on the history of transport in the city. From old tube carriages to Victorian horse-drawn carts, the museum was expanded in the year 2000 to not only cover the London Underground but to chart the many sides of public transport marvels in the UK capital.

Hidden London tours

Taking a focus on the many abandoned tube tunnels in the city, the Hidden London Tours takes visitors on a journey through the warrens of disused rail tunnels underneath the city. With abandoned stations and miles of tube lines, the tour takes visitors through areas that have since been used for filming movies such as James Bond and 28 Weeks Later.

The basis of London as we know it today dates back to the Roman era, giving a good 2 millennia of depth and history to the city. Whilst little is left of its early history, there are still glimpses into the city’s past through museums, castle ruins and plenty of relics. For guests staying at special offers London hotels, holidaymakers in London might find their time taken up with tourist attractions and entertainment, but allowing a moment to soak in the long history of London could really elevate your trip to the city.

For starters, an exploration of London’s most ancient buildings could provide lesser known, even hidden insight into the city, adding levels of depth that usually remain unseen to the untrained eye. Secondly, London’s colourful past will ensure that you really get a handle on what London represents and stands for as the capital of the UK.

Whilst cities like Venice and Rome advertise their ancient history as go-to tourist attractions, London has plenty of other tricks up its sleeve, meaning you might miss the quieter but equally enriching. With institutions like the Museum of London giving a more analytical and organised deep dive into the city’s history, some visitors might prefer to really “live” the past. The best way to do this is through exploring the old buildings, or what’s left of them, to really get a feel for the long-living UK capital. From the ruins of ancient structures to refurbished old buildings, here are some of the best ancient buildings you can explore during your stay in London.

London Mithraeum

The London Mithraeum was discovered under Walbrook Street in 1954. Dating back to the third century, this Roman temple is dedicated to the obscure Roman deity Mithras. Now a museum, the remains of the subterranean temple are underneath the Walbrook branch of the Bloomberg company. Tickets can be bought online and onsite and the temple itself gives a vivid insight into the development of ancient London.

Westminster Abbey

Dating back to the year 960, Westminster Abbey now sits aside the Houses of Parliament and what was once Westminster Palace. The Abbey was originally dedicated to St Peter, a fisherman having had an alleged vision of the Saint at the nearby bank of the River Thames. However, in 1056, Edward the Confessor repurposed the abbey as a burial site. Nowadays, visitors can explore the many tombs and memorials of the abbey, including that of Geoffry Chaucer, Queen Elizabeth I and Stephen Hawking.

St Paul’s Cathedral

Based on Ludgate Hill, the highest point in the City of London district was built by Sir Christopher Wren in 1697. The cathedral, dedicated to St Paul the Apostle was built on the site of Old St Paul’s after the Great Fire of London destroyed. This earlier cathedral dates back to 1087 but was not completed until the mid 13th century. With a long history of Pre Norman Cathedrals and pagan sites on the plot of land, this iconic London church offers a real insight into the history of the Anglican church.

London Wall

Although not a building per se, the London Wall is one of the best examples of Roman influence on London. Dating back to the 2nd or 3rd century, the London Wall was a construct built during the Roman creation of Londinium, a fort built in 120 AD. Special offer London Hotel guests can still see several sites where the wall still stands, including one near the Barbican, the London Museum and at Tower Hill.

Pancras Old Church

Though rebuilt in the 19th century, Roman tiles had been discovered on the site of this Hampstead based Anglican church. Potentially built somewhere between the 4th and 7th century, St Pancras is one of the earliest indicators of Christian worship.

Pyx Chapel

Located within Westminster Abbey, Pyx Chapel is the oldest surviving part of Westminster Abbey and dates back to 1056 when Edward the Confessor began building the Abbey. During your visit to the abbey, take a peak in Pyx Chapel to see tiles that remain from the original structure.

The White Tower

The oldest part of the Tower of London was built in the late 11th century. Whilst much of the fortress was built upon throughout the proceeding centuries, the original White Tower fortress has walls that are 90 feet high and served to house the royal family in a near unscalable safehouse.

St Bartholomews Gatehouse

Based in Smithfield, St Bartholomews Gatehouse may itself date back to the 16th century (still old!) but the stonework underneath has its roots in the 1200s’ and nearby St Bartholomews Priory. Much of this age-old building work was covered during the Georgian era but rediscovered after World War 1 bombing revealed the original walls.

Guildhall

Originally built in 1411 as a meeting place for city guilds, the hall was damaged by the Great Fire of London and rebuilt in 1670. With a roman amphitheatre in its basement, this site holds much history concerning the development of London, whilst the neighbouring building is the Guildhall Art Gallery, housing some of the city’s finest works of art.

The Old Curiosity Shop

Used as a location in Dickens “The Old Curiosity Shop”, this 16th-century shop was originally located a few streets away, but still retains its literary link to the past through the antique books it sells, as well as its beautiful traditional Tudor exterior.

The Old Wine shades

Another survivor of the Great Fire of London, this bar was a regular haunt of Charles Dickens himself. Nowadays, this vintage wine bar is a quaint and intimate pub setting and is especially unique in that it features a smugglers tunnel running right underneath it.

Old Royal Naval College

Based in Greenwich Royal Park, the Old Royal Naval College was an army hospital for seamen, and before that was the Duke of Gloucester’s home in the 15th century. After changing hands from Margaret of Anjou and then rebuilt by Henry VIII, what was then known as the Palace of Placentia was redesigned by Christopher Wren as the Centrepiece of the Royal Maritime. The grand square has been used as a location for many blockbuster movies and overlooks the banks of the River Thames.

London is a city where history and modernity intertwine to create an unparalleled travel experience. If you’re embarking on the first-ever trip to this iconic city, you’re in for a treat. The symphony of cultures, spectacular landmarks, and of course the quintessential Royal British charm of the city is going to make this a memorable journey for you.

When it comes to choosing a place to stay in this enchanting city, Park Grand London Hotel with its central location and stylish rooms with plush amenities, is perfect for exploring all that London has to offer.

To help you plan your first London getaway, here are some essential tips that’ll help you make the most of cherishable memories in this vibrant city.

Plan and Pack Smart

Before you embark on your London adventure, do your homework. Research top attractions, create an itinerary, and familiarise yourself with the city’s public transportation system. Websites and mobile apps like Transport for London (TfL) can be immensely helpful for navigating the city’s buses and trains. Additionally, London’s weather can be unpredictable, so it’s wise to pack layers, a waterproof jacket, and comfortable walking shoes. A universal travel adapter is also a must to keep your devices charged.

Stay in Central London

Your first trip to London is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. You want to make the most of it, and that means staying in the heart of the action. Central London is the place to be, with its iconic landmarks, popular attractions, vibrant neighbourhoods, and ever-buzzing streets. Make the perfect choice with a hotel near Hyde Park London! This way, you’ll be within walking distance of all the incredible attractions, and you’ll also be close to the London Underground, making it super easy for you to get around and explore the city.

Get the London Pass

The London Pass is a digital sightseeing pass that lets you skip the long waiting lines at over 80 popular attractions in the city and explore them for free. This includes the enchanting Buckingham Palace, the Tower of London, the London Eye and more. In fact, it also includes free use of the hop-on hop-off bus tour and discounts on other additional activities. It’s a great way to explore the best parts of the city while saving time and money. The best part is that the London Pass comes with a 90-day money-back guarantee, so you can use or return it at your own convenience.

Get an Oyster Card

When you’re travelling to London for the first time, it’s best to use a contactless credit card or Oyster card to pay for your commute. This is the most convenient and efficient way to get around the city, be it enjoying one of the spectacular parks or a legendary theatre show in the West End. Save your time and money with the Oyster card.

To kickstart your adventure, get the Oyster card available at an Oyster Ticket Shop, several neighbourhood newsagents and almost all tube stations. The best part? You only need a small minimum deposit to get your hands on one! You can also go for a contactless card to pay for your travel. Simply tap your card on the reader while you enter and exit a station. Plus, London buses don’t accept cash, so having an Oyster card or contactless card is the only way to travel in the iconic London buses. So, do away standing in long queues and utilise your time wisely, seeing the best of what London has to offer.

And remember, don’t leave London without savouring traditional British cuisine to add to the exploration. Try fish and chips, a hearty English breakfast, and a classic afternoon tea at Park Grand Lancaster Gate. Be adventurous and sample international cuisines in London’s diverse dining scene.

Explore the Neighbourhoods and the Royal Heritage

London is a city with a rich and diverse history, and its neighbourhoods reflect this. From the royal borough of Kensington to the vibrant Piccadilly Circus, there is a neighbourhood in London to suit everyone. And of course, no visit to London would be complete without exploring its royal heritage. From Buckingham Palace to the Tower of London, there are countless palaces, castles, and other historical sites that you must see.

Be Mindful of the Local Etiquette

Brits are known for their politeness. So, when you’re in London it’s important to know that saying “please” and “thank you” goes a long way. When using the tube, always stand on the right side of the escalators to allow others to pass on the left side and always mind the gap to give the right amount of space to others.

Visit the Free Attractions

London is a city with a wealth of free attractions, from world-famous museums and historical landmarks to hidden gems and quirky experiences. Quite a number of these attractions and experiences are free of cost. So, make sure to plan your trip ahead of time so you don’t miss out! When it comes to choosing the best of the free attractions, visit the British Museum, explore the National Gallery, or watch the changing of the guard ceremony at Buckingham Palace, for a wholesome day out.

Allow Enough Time to Explore and Stay Safe

London is a big city, and it takes time to see everything. When you’re planning your first trip to London, it’s easy to get overwhelmed by all the amazing things there are to see and do.

If you’re short on time, you can also take a hop-on hop-off bus tour, which will give you the perfect overview of the city. And if you’re looking for something a little more unique, take a boat ride on the Thames River, as it’s a great way to see London from a different perspective. No matter what you choose to do, just make sure to relax, take your time and savour every moment!

Remember, like any major city, London has its share of tourist areas. However, it’s essential to stay alert and be mindful of your belongings, especially in crowded places, the tube, and buses. Keep your passport and other important documents secure.

The centrally located Hyde Park International Hotel is just a short walk from not only the iconic Hyde Park but several other popular attractions in the city. And with its luxurious rooms and excellent service, you’re sure to have a worthwhile stay. So, book now!
