Inspired by the classic X-Com / UFO: Enemy Unknown franchise, Xenonauts is a single-player "planetary defence simulator" strategy game. Players are put in control of an organization tasked with defending the planet against extraterrestrial invasion; establishing bases all across the world that house aircraft, scientists, technicians and soldiers and using them as staging posts to defend the skies against alien incursion and strike at crashed UFOs or terror sites on the ground.

The game consists of two main elements, the Geoscape and the Combat Viewer. The Geoscape is the strategic command layer and management interface of the game. It allows the player to build and manage their bases, monitor the organisations finances and control what the Xenonaut scientists research and what their technicians build. It also allows players to deploy the organisations aircraft, whether they be fighters tasked with intercepting and destroying alien craft, or dropships that ferry Xenonaut strike teams to combat zones. Unlike its predecessor, Xenonauts will also feature tactical air combat between squadrons of human interceptors and alien UFOs and their escorts.

Combat Viewer: The Combat Viewer displays the turn-based ground combat element of the game that is initiated when the player deploys a strike team into a combat zone. Strike teams consist of soldiers and vehicles that are armed and armored on the Geoscape from a selection of over sixty different items of equipment that can be researched and unlocked over the course of the game. There are several different types of missions in the game, each of which has different victory conditions and requires different tactics to master. Your success or failure in combat missions will affect the strategic position of the Xenonauts either positively or negatively.

Therefore much of the sport is around budgeting your time. When you progress, the game’s world expands, and Jimmy’s abilities develop. Which brings us to the game’s one misstep: the teachings.

The concept is great: Jimmy gains skills and abilities with the classes he attends. Art classes improve his kissing (kissing girls will give you extra health, much like in real life), English gives him alternative ideas to speak his exit of trouble, Chemistry lessons teach him learning to make their own firecrackers, itching powder and stink bombs. But each lesson (bar photography and gym) is a tedious affair, either horribly dull quick-time event challenges, or sub-standard puzzles that wouldn’t grace the worst casual game. They’re a required chore as opposed to fun.
