There’s one thing I can say for sure about myself: I am the most undecided person I’ve ever known. Or at least, I used to be. I still go through a real inner battle every time I have to choose between chocolate and vanilla ice-cream, so you can imagine how hard it must have been for me to opt for a profession that would probably stick with me for the rest of my life. Actually, it wasn’t that difficult after all. It’s true, in my indetermination, I sort of wanted to be everything at once. I would have liked to have the opportunity to express myself and to be creative and spontaneous that actors have, but at the same time I was never very good at completely letting go of myself, so a job ‘behind the cameras’ would have sounded better. At the same time, I would have liked something more reality-oriented, a profession that could give me the chance to help people, one way or another. I could have gone to Medical School for that, but seeing blood and learning Chemistry were never among my strong points J. However, this need for human interaction never left me and I soon realized that kids were these awesome human beings, with a fascinating imagination and the amazing capacity to still be able to be everything they wanted, as long as they were under the right influence. And I thought, hey, I’d like to be at least a tiny bit of that influence! I’d like to be able to say that, through my work, I helped one person have a better life. And that’s when I decided that I should be a teacher. Because, after all, teaching encompasses all those things that I was dreaming of doing when I was younger and a great deal more. I could make you a list, but I’m still discovering them myself J.

What about you, guys? How do you cope with this task of choosing a profession, when there are so many options out there? Have you already made up your minds? We’re looking forward to hearing from you J.

Welcome back! As promised, I am revisiting the CAE exam and taking each Paper one by one for you to have a better grasp of what it is all about, what is required of you and, most importantly, which are THE STRATEGIES you should have up your sleeve in times of need. Let’s make passing an exam fun, not pure torture!

This week’s focus is on the Reading Paper! Take a deep breath, and here we go! Do bundle up, it will seem awfully stormy at times… hopefully, we’ll be able to turn it into “brainstormy”, for a change!

So, you’re trying to prepare your Reading Paper. What exactly are you looking at here?

Well, you’re looking at 4 parts, all to be solved in 1h 15′. Consider it done! Which are the parts in question?, I hear you wondering. One step at a time. We all know that Rome wasn’t built in a day… Let’s take a closer look at Parts 1 and 2, for starters, shall we?

Part 1 – This is a multiple choice task. You have to choose one answer out of 4 options. Piece of cake, you might say, but mind you:

Out of the four, two will for certain seem just perfect to suit your question. Keep in mind, one of those two is the most vicious distractor. It’s all a process of narrowing it down to what’s true for the text, by using arguments given inside the text!

Take things slowly and logically! The first step is to read the question and identify a clue in the text that points towards one of the 4 options. Underline it. Then, make sure you actually got it right and you didn’t get distracted: eliminate the other 3 potential answers. It’s not enough to think of arguments that point towards an option, before choosing one of the four, find counter-arguments sustained by the text that eliminate the other 3 “suspects”.

Pay attention! Some of the questions may not even be well-rounded ones. Some of them are merely statements that could be continued by any of the 4 options below them. Confer with the text at all times! Whatever you need is in the text or underlying it! Make sure you can sail through it, but also dive into it if you are looking for more in depth clues!

Think of a text as a 3D entity! It’s got several layers. You know what they say, don’t judge a book just by looking at its cover! Be ready to find clues as to what opinion, tone, purpose and attitude are concerned. Don’t match words in the text to those in the options, match the ideas!

Part 2 – This is a gapped text. There are 6 gaps in a text and you are given 7 paragraphs. Tricky, right? You can’t choose simply by means of exclusion. There will always be the odd one out!

First, read the text as a whole, get in touch with its development. Go with the flow, so to speak.

Then, read the fragments. Your mind will have already started to raise its suspicions as to which goes where. It’s time to stop going with the flow. Stand your ground! Whatever you suspect should come between two sections of the text needs to have a good coherence and a solid cohesion to the larger image. Coherence means that you don’t interrupt ideas, and cohesion makes sure that you identify the written proof, the linkers (a.k.a linking devices).

Once you’re done, read the whole text again. See the bigger picture! If nothing seems fishy, you probably got it right. And, yes, I know it sounds like it’s going to take forever, but do not worry! You will get better and faster as you practise.

In addition, no matter which part you are solving never lose sight of this: Do not panic if you find some words difficult or unknown. Try to deduce as much as you can from context, read sentences, not isolated words!

Also, keep in mind: Practice makes perfect! Don’t throw yourself into the CAE arena without proper gear (strategy and experience). Without it, you are merely a baby in front of a book… written in Ancient Greek! What chance do you stand?

Ladies and gentlemen, with this being said, my work is done for now. Hit the libraries for practice test books and fire up those keyboards with questions you might have for me. I’ll be more than happy to answer them. Stay tuned for the next CAMBRIDGE CAE Mission article, on Reading Parts 3 and 4 ! Cheers!

“The voice of parents is the voice of gods, for to their children they are heaven’s lieutenants”- asternea pe hartie, acum multi ani, Shakespeare.

Bucuria vine atunci cand parcurgi paginile cartii, de aceea m-as opri doar la a enumera sfaturile date (pretioase, as adauga eu), fara a le dezvolta. As vrea sa mentionez ca autorul face o clasificare a parintilor, in buni si inteligenti.

Parintii buni dau cadouri, parintii inteligenti isi daruiesc propria fiinta

Parintii buni alimenteaza corpul, parintii inteligenti alimenteaza personalitatea

Parintii buni corecteaza greselile, parintii inteligenti isi invata copiii sa gandeasca

Parintii buni isi pregatesc copiii pentru aplauze, parintii inteligenti isi pregatesc copiii pentru esecuri

Parintii buni vorbesc, parintii inteligenti dialogheaza ca niste prieteni

Parintii buni dau informatii , parintii inteligenti povestesc istorioare.

If I had my child to raise over again,

I’d finger paint more, and point the finger less.

I’d do less correcting, and more connecting.

I’d take my eyes off my watch, and watch with my eyes.
I would care to know less, and know to care more.

I’d take more hikes and fly more kites.

I’d stop playing serious, and seriously play.

I’d run through more fields, and gaze at more stars.

I’d do more hugging, and less tugging.

I would be firm less often, and affirm much more.

I’d build self-esteem first, and the house later.

I’d teach less about the love of power,

And more about the power of love.

If I had my child to raise over again – Diane Loomans

Cu alte cuvinte: Repetition is the mother of skill!

Pasul 5

But, how many of us are actually able to partake in such an event? That’s why Shakespeare School has come up with the perfect solution – to end each Conversation Club module with an English Tea Party!

Where did we have the tea parties this time around? Well, the Dorobanti branch of Shakespeare School was the site of 6 tea parties last week, and each one of them started and ended with a bang! The English-loving kids bore the freezing weather to make it to the tea parties which started with the tossing of a squeaky dwarf, and continued with other fast and noisy games.

We introduced the world of teas to the children by having a tea-sniffing ceremony where the kids smelled and guessed the different teas. After this, the kids moved on to the highly anticipated event that is drinking fruit tea and eating yummy biscuits. One can still hear some of the children raving about the fruit tea which they proclaimed as absolutely DELICIOUS

Besides games, tea and biscuits, we also watched many video clips to find out more about English tea parties. The younger children watched the craziest tea party ever (thanks to Alice in Wonderland), and the older kids watched video clips on how to host an English tea party and how to make the perfect cup of English tea. All the kids learned about the traditions of afternoon tea in England and we also talked about some tea legends. And as mentioned above, the tea parties ended with a bang – that is a food fight in Shakespeare School style.

A picture is worth a thousand words, and so I’m going to leave you with a few thousand words that will describe the tea parties The next batch of tea parties will be held in June, at the end of the second module, and if you want to join in the fun, we look forward to having you in the Conversation Club!

Ca orice examen, CAE (Certificate in Advanced English) iti testeaza anumite abilitati, deprinderi, cunostinte.

In ce consta?

Speaking, 15 minute, doar 15 minute… doar 15 minute? Intr-adevar, dragi candidati, your fifteen minutes of glory!

It’s not the what, it’s the why.

Keep one eye on the clue and the other on the question!

In timpul examenului real vei avea in jur de 18 minute pentru fiecare parte a probei.

Be one step ahead of your reader!

Pregateste-ti proba de Use of English:

Invata vocabularul in chunks. Cuvintele nu sunt elemente izolate, plutind in aer sau in paginile de dictionar. Ele sunt folosite in contexte. Everybody works better in a team, and so do words!

Practice makes perfect!

Ofera atentia cuvenita ortografiei.

It happens to the best of us, not to worry.

Tine minte, asculti de doua ori fiecare inregistrare. When is ever life generous enough to give you second chances? Well, the CAE is!

Fii pregatit/a dinainte sa te poti redresa in context chiar daca ai ratat un raspuns.

Fii afabil!

Daca ai emotii, exerseaza prin a vorbi in fata oglinzii. In momentul in care nu te va mai bufni rasul/ plansul, nu iti va mai tremura vocea si vei putea sa iti raspunzi la intrebarile de examen coerent si fluent… Felicitari! Esti pregatit/a!
