Rainforest Trail Mix

Whether as a fun treat or incorporating as part of an educational unit on The Rainforest, the Rainforest Trail Mix is super easy to make.  Make a larger batch and put in snack size zip-close bags for a snack that is easy to grab and eat – for you or the kids!

All ingredients are products of the Rainforest: bananas, coconut, raisins, peanuts, and chocolate.

This is going to be our first in-between-school-years summer.  Kindergarten is winding down (not even going to think on that specifically or I’ll turn into an emotional mess) and summer will be here in no time at all.

We are planning a Disney vacation at the beginning of the break, but that still leaves a lot of weeks – many, many days!!

One summer goal is for Banan to read about a book a day.  I’ve been buying extra books from his Scholastic monthly flyers (but the library is an option too, plus makes a great outing – just not sure I’d want to go every day, lol). He;s already reading well above level, so I want to continue that and perhaps even increase the level a little bit.

I want to plan ahead and have activities, crafts, and outings planned (but not so much a rigid schedule – it is summer afterall).  Having ideas, supplies, printouts, etc ready will free up time for fun instead of planning for fun.

Calen will be 18 months old on the first, so I also want to do crafts and activities that he can be involved in.

I have been checking out car organizing ideas – I’d like to have an organizer on the back of both seats and have snacks, small toys, DVDs, and other needed items loaded up to make our Summer outings go more smoothly.

Like most of the rest of the world, I’ve started taking more of an interest in healthier living.

And by interest, I mean I’ve done more looking in to it than acting on it – but, hey, my intentions are good.

I can happily say that I am {almost} at my pre-pregnancy weight from my last pregnancy (nevermind that Calen just turned 17 months old, slow and steady, right?).  Once I hit that milestone, it is 10 more pounds to get to my pre-pregnancy weight from my first pregnancy.

While I am not consistent every day, I do the shakes as a meal replacement and try  to watch what I eat.

I’ve become obsessed with Pinterest – I’ve created boards for healthy food ideas, exercise & other healthy ideas, home remedies, etc and have been pinning articles, ideas, and motivation.

Beyond losing excess weight, I’m looking for ways of living a healthier life.

I’ve recently come across Nopalea, a wellness drink that can help the body reduce inflammation, cleanse itself of daily toxins, and promote optimal health when taken daily.  The biggest draw for me is that it is a drink and not in a pill / vitamin form, which I seriously hate to take.

A drink of nutrients & benefits?

Def more my style.

I have been wanting to try a “detox” but didn’t want anything too extreme.  I like that Nopalea helps the body get rid of daily toxins.  I know there’s a lot of “junk” that tends to build up – especially with my not-quite-at-my-goal eating habits.

For the first time since I was in school (and we are not going to discuss how long ago that was), the Easter Season includes Spring Break.  Banan starting school changes everything.  Our schedule now revolves around his school schedule.  Since we aren’t free to just up and go on an excursion at any given moment, Spring Break afforded us a week free of school, so we took that opportunity to take a road trip to visit family in New York and Connecticut.  I’m not sure if a Spring Break vacation is a new tradition for us – but it could be.

One thing we do every year is dye about a dozen-ish  hard boiled eggs.  Banan loves this tradition and always has fun decorating them.  This will be Calen’s first year – he was only a few months old on his first Easter.  I saw a cute idea about using a wire whisk to hold the egg for the little ones.  I think we will be trying that.  Getting home on the day before Easter kinda messes with the timing of being able to do the eggs, so we may actually have to fit it into Easter Sunday sometime,  We really should have done them while we were in NY, but I didn’t think about it then.

Easter Sunday is always super busy for us (so fitting in coloring the eggs may be especially tricky)… Finding all the eggs the Easter Bunny hid and checking out all the goodies he left…. Church… Lunch at my dad’s, plus a big egg hunt for all the kids…. Dinner at my mother-in-law’s….. a visit to my mom’s in between the 2 meals (though this year we are seeing her for breakfast on Monday instead of visiting on Sunday).

What are some of your Easter Traditions?  Do you do the meal at your house?  Do y’all have a big Easter Egg hunt on Sunday or maybe the day or weekend before?  (Banan’s friend had one, but we got back into town too late on Saturday to be able to make it.)  What are some ideas you would like to add to your Easter Traditions?

I think I’d like to do more leading up to Easter, especially if Banan continues to have the week before off for Spring Break.  If we do make a Spring Break trip a tradition, I think I’d like to get back earlier so I don’t feel so stressed and rushed the day before – plus traveling on a holiday weekend is not a whole lot of fun, lol.

In my new Earth Wisteria Platinum Mooshie Calf shoes, that is.

While I’m not suggesting that these are walking shoes (they are not, but that’s kinda obvious), it is the most comfortable sandal I’ve worn – and I’ve done a lot of walking in them.

I wanted to give them a real good test, so other than wearing them pretty consistently for the past month-ish, I also wore them to Disney.  While nobody’s feet feel nice and relaxed after walking through the Magic Kingdom all day, my Earth Wisteria sandals  – did I mention it has a 2″ heel? – were as comfortable to walk the park in as any “comfortable” shoe has been.

They are comfortable, stylish and go just as easily with shorts and jeans as with something a little more dressier.

I sat down a couple or so days ago (days are just running together anymore in my highly disorganized state) and wrote down different areas of my life that I need to balance.

I’ve long realized it, but wouldn’t quite come face to face with it in terms of doing something about it, but when I focus on one area, all other areas suffer.

Trying to balance it all (without an actual workable plan, mind you) leaves me feeling overwhelmed, exhausted, and oh yeah, not actually balancing it all. 

I have been focusing on other areas that are not blogging and guess what?  I haven’t blogged.  It comes in waves and when I do get into a good blogging groove, everything else suffers.

I know I have the same 24 hours in each day that everyone else has.  I know that what needs to be done cannot be that impossible to accomplish.  Yet for me, it has been.

I knew I needed a plan.  Something that would work.  Really work.

I have this recurring fantasy (yes, this is someone else’s post – but it is pretty much my fantasy verbatim.  And it is even G-rated.  Sorry for that let down, haha.)…  and have set off in the path of making it a reality.  Lots of times.  More often than I can count.

It has worked in small measures, at times, but usually only in one or two areas of my life and while that has been awesome, the other areas of my life have suffered.

Same old story with me.

I discovered that post today that I linked to above.  At the end of it was info on this new series / meme, “Project Organize Your Entire Life.”

Yes.

I believe this could be is the reaffirmation and help I need to work toward balancing each area of my life.

As a bonus, it sounds like it could also be just the thing to get things in all areas of my life in a better place.

I know it won’t be an overnight miracle, as much as I wish that could be true, but an improvement of any sort is still just that… an improvement.

I created a Pinterest board where I will be pinning items from Project Organize Your Life and other helpful bits of information and inspiration as I work toward creating this balance.

There is not a lot in the way of treat ideas for kids for Presidents Day.

I’ve looked.

I stumbled across this idea of Abe Lincoln’s Hat in a few places during my extensive random, last minute search yesterday.  None with pictures, though.

Here’s my rendition….

Abe Lincoln Hat Treats:

Ingredients:

Keebler Fudge Stripes
Rolo Candy
Brown Icing

Directions:

1. Turn each cookie upside down so the solid chocolate side is facing up.

2. Put brown icing on bottom of a Rolo candy and “stick” to middle of cookie.  I used Oreo decorating icing since I had it on hand, but in hindsight wished I used a darker brown icing.

3. Repeat to stack Rolo candy 2 high on each cookie.

Voila!  Abe Lincoln Hat Treats!!

Yesterday, I posted about the Happy Valentines Day Love Bug valentines that Banan made for his classmates.  (They turned out super cute!)

I think these Shooting For Brownie Points Valentine teacher gifts also turned out pretty cute:

I bought the Betty Crocker brownie mix at Target and the Betty Crocker spatulas at Dollar Tree.

I knew Dollar Tree sold Betty Crocker utensils, which are RED (hello, perfect for Valentines Day!!), which is one reason I bought that brand of brownie mix, plus there are Box Tops.  Win win, haha.

I bought the “brownie points” printable here for $1.29 after seeing it on Pinterest – they have the blue that I used as well as pink (both are included in the price).

I printed out heart clipart to use as the to/from label since there wasn’t room on the brownie points printable.  You could just cut out hearts (or write super tiny on the printable).

These are the Valentines Banan made for the kidlets in his class.

Aren’t they adorable?

The Happy Valentines Day Love Bug printable is available for free here.  We bought the “glitter bugs” at Dollar Tree.

Banan wrote his friends’ names on the back of each Valentine, wrote his name on the front at the bottom, and then glued a bug onto each one.  I might be a little biased, but I think they turned out fantastic!

These adorable treats look like mini cupcakes but are actually large marshmallows with pink icing coated with Valentine Sprinkles and red sugar crystals.

It literally takes just a few minutes to make a nice batch of them.

Lady & The Tramp was a childhood favorite of mine and I enjoyed sharing this wonderful story with my children.  We could do without the dreadful Aunt, but then again, it was her and her equally dreadful cats that led to Lady meeting Tramp.  It is a sweet story and I’m excited that this Disney classic has come out of the vault.  The downside is that being an older Disney movie, the animation is in the older fashion and not the animation Banan is used to.  The beginning was slow and didn’t really catch his attention until a little bit into it.  He loved all the animals’ antics, though (and the adorable puppies at the end of the movie).

Also releasing from the Disney vault in 2012 will be Lady & The Tramp II: Scamp’s Adventure.  Look for it this Summer!

One of my big goals for 2012 is to ease my way back into couponing and shopping the deals.

The big perk of couponing, if you use more than just 1 or 2 coupons, is getting enough non-perishable (or at least somewhat long lasting) items that you create something of a stockpile.

I am not talking the obsessive store looking stockpiles you’ve seen on the show Extreme Couponing.  That is just insane. 

I’m saying that next time you run out of something and need to pick up some more, you realize you already have extra on hand – and that you got it for 75% off using a coupon with a deal.  So you don’t have to rush out and pay full price for it.  Win-win.

I’m not much of a pro in the kitchen – and I’d probably rather be just about anywhere else – but I do have grand ideas of doing better meal planning and preparation and I would love to go through a fairly simple ingredient list and and tick them all off in my head – have that, have that, have that.  I want a well stocked pantry and freezer.

While this is great for cost savings and overall convenience, it is also great in an emergency.  I live in Florida, AKA Hurricane Central.  Even though our area has been blessed to have avoided a hurricane since Dora struck in 1964, we still get plenty of tropical weather – outer bands of storms, tropical storms, etc.  Generators, water, and plenty of food can become hot commodities around here.

Synopsis:
The Buddies are off on an all new adventure, and this time their journey takes them all the way to the ruins of ancient Egypt where, with the help of some new friends, including Digger the Archeologist dog, Cammy, a baby camel, and a misschievous monkey named Babi, they’ll explore mysterious tombs, dodge treacherous booby traps, and race against a devious cat in search of the greatest treasure known to animalkind, the lost collar of Cleocatra.

Disney’s Treasure Buddies is a super cute, fun family movie!  We love the Buddies and always welcome their newest adventure.  Their individual personalities are funny and cute, and though they seem to end up in a tight spot more often than not, they always conspire to get themselves out of it and not only save themselves, but become the heroes (and heroine!) of the story.  Treasure Buddies is no different.  I enjoyed this movie just as much as my son (5 years old) did.

So, I’ve had this cough thing for the past month…  It started one day when my throat felt a teeny bit sore, like a sore throat was coming on… then the next day I had a cough like the kind you get when a cold is breaking up.  I thought it was weird, but I wasn’t complaining that I seemed to skip the actual cold part.

Except the cough just kinda stuck around.

THEN, last weekend, I felt drowsy all day, both days – like I hadn’t slept at all.  Except as far as I know, I slept great both nights.

Even worse? It continued most of the week.  I spent most of Saturday and Sunday on the couch, sleeping on and off and thankfully was slightly more awake during the week, but still very sluggish.

What gives?

I’m feling more energy coming back today and the cough is also happening less and less – thankfully.

Thanks to that major case of the Zzzzzzzz’s this week, I’ve been mainly “off the grid”.

Man, can email and work load pile up super quick in just a few days’ time!

Fingers crossed the cough and those Zzzzzz’s are both done with me.

We checked Banan out of school early Friday and the four of us headed to the Fire Rescue East Trade Show in Daytona – with a stop at IHOP along the way.

A lot of the vendors typically have candy, pens and other goodies to giveaway to attendees and this year was no exception.  Banan thought it was Halloween, lol.  Candy, toys, pens, pencils, cups, etc… plus brochures full of awesome fire trucks!

Calen loved getting out of the stroller and checking out things that interested him – which would be wheels, of course.  Fire trucks have very large wheels - all the better for Calen.  It cracks us up just how obsessed with wheels he is!

We headed out along the beach for the drive home.  The wind was whipping pretty good right on the beach, but it was otherwise a nice day, so we decided to stop for a few and let the boys run & play.

I’m ashamed to admit that this was Calen’s first beach vist.

He’s 14 months old – almost 15 months.  And we live in Florida.

Instead of beach days last summer, we did our water play at resorts while visiting Orlando. It was fun, even with him being so little then, but his first beach day was long overdue.

OK, so it wasn’t really a beach day, but still.

Banan ran ran kinda wild, being silly, and kept getting closer to the water.  In the end, his shoes and socks were soaked and his pants weren’t much drier.

Calen didn’t run around persay… he just made a beeline straight for the water every. single. time. he was put down on his own two feet. The water was simply too good to resist.

Overall, it was a fun family day!
