Shanshine’s reflections:

A big thank you to NYP for having me speak and share with you!  It was my utmost pleasure speaking to an intellectual and attentive audience.  The time flew by so fast, and I could see that they wanted me to continue despite the time allocated for me to speak was up.  That is one of the most accolades I could get.  Their rapt attention and brain cogs turning almost visibly when they were listening made my day!

Thank you, Peggy, for inviting me to speak.  Thank you for your compliments on my excellent speaking and interest in this refreshing perspective on Psychology.  It appealed immensely to my mischievous side speaking to those who have lectured me before!

“Troubles are like boxes. Once you open them, they are not as big as they appear to be.” - Yip Pei Shan

This nugget of wisdom was coined when I saw the many boxes in my house and pondering over my friend’s issues. Big ones, small ones, all of them in varying shapes and sizes. Perhaps we can make a mountain out of a molehill, or even attempting to find a needle in a haystack. However, what’s the purpose of doing so? It only serves to bring you on a spiral of negativity. It exhausts you of the energies that could be used to combat the troubles. Moreover, like a vampire, you suck your loved ones down with you. Even the littlest of things can appear to be huge problems, which on further examination, are not as big as they appear to be.

Hence, I liken troubles to be like boxes. Boxes always need to be larger than the items inside in order to contain them adequately. All sorts of things can be inside, and once you see them, get acquainted with them intimately, the mystery is solved.

Have you any boxes of troubles? More importantly, have you opened your box? Most importantly, have you clearly examined what is inside your box? Do that, resolve your negativities, and the trouble is no longer a trouble, and just an issue to be dealt with.

My beloved friends,

I kickstarted my Ho Ho Ha Ha Ha! series with B.O., B.O.! Due to special circumstances, this could not be publicised before the event proper.  B.O., B.O.! was received with light-hearted chuckles, tickling my audience’s funny bones.  Speaking humourously is an interesting challenge!

B.O., B.O.! was conducted at:

* Venue: IFPAS Toastmasters Club, IFPAS Building, 7 Hongkong Street, Singapore

Currently, there are three series running:

• Special seminars;
• Ho Ho Ha Ha Ha!; and

The last special seminar, Riding the Rollercoaster of the Recession Refreshingly!!!, was received with great enthusiasm, ending on a high note!  Three pertinent ideas were shared to uplift my audience’s feelings, with everyone moving and jiving at the end!

Gems are found in little nooks and crannies!  Craving for some hot and sour noodles in soup, we stopped over at The Asian Kitchen in Vivocity.  Led by their zany restaurant manager, I have been impressed with their superb service and heart-warming smiles since June this year.  After a protracted search for electronic equipment, it was great to dine in a place with happy vibes.

Ka Yau, Mr. tender loving care, was the man who made our dining extraordinarily pleasant!  When I ordered my hot and sour noodles in soup, he recommended adding more chilli padi (little red chillis) to heighten the heat factor.  Upon seeing my hesitation, he suggested serving me the chilli padi on a separate dish, to add in as I liked.

Throughout, he was attentive, kind and polite.  When my noodles arrived, I was presented with a spoon that was as large as a ladle.  I did not look forward to having a locked jaw maneuvering this unwieldy ladle, so I asked Ka Yau to give me a decent-sized spoon.  For some reason, he looked perplexed at my request, so I explained to him, “The spoon is too big.  I have a small mouth.”

Immediately, he acceded to my request with a broad smile that developed into a huge, voracious laughter.  I have not seen a waiter laugh so hilariously at work!  After bringing me a smaller spoon, he cautioned me not to scald myself, as I would be dipping the metal spoon into hot soup.  I was touched by his concern for a diner in his restaurant.  Ka Yau continued to smile broadly whenever he caught our attention.  Smiles and laughter are indeed heart-to-heart connections, lighting up the hearts of everyone who is willing to receive it.  I have captured one of his Shanshine Smiles on film.

With his exuberant smiles, deep, sincere laughter; and caring nature,  he is the epitome of service.  I salute you, Ka Yau, Mr. TLC (tender loving care)!

Shelly, thanks for sharing this superb commercial with me!  I want to pay this forward.

Now, THIS really made ME CRY.  This commercial has themes of resilience, tenacity and shining through all odds – excellent themes which are all aligned with my tagline, “Smile! Are you shining yet?”  Shining through all odds, no matter what happens!  A never-say-die attitude!  I can definitely identify with this girl – riding through the rollercoaster called Life.  I can remember the frustrations, the criticisms, the ridicules that serve not to break my spirit, but strengthen it.

I love the beautiful track – Pachel’s Canon in D – which is one of my favourite pieces I love listening to and playing.  I remember striving for perfection in my music, which influenced my desire for doing the best in whatever I set out to do.

“Why do you have to be like others?”

I love these couple of questions.  Be yourself.  Create your own rules for your own self.  What is the best for you, which Coaching does for you by unlocking what you need for yourself.  This elderly gentleman does that too – by asking excellent questions!  He did not tell her what to do, she thought about his questions, and decided upon her own course of actions.

Dare to be different.  Have the courage to be unique, because there is no one else like you.  Some are born to be different.  More importantly, they persist in their uniqueness – becoming more and more of who they truly are.  These are the ‘white-lighters’ who shine in our world today.

Having the beautiful hair is a bonus.  I think the courage and spirit of the girl portrayed in this commercial is extraordinary – and we can ALL CHOOSE to be EXTRAORDINARY in our own way.

Aishah’s shanshiney smile inspired me to create the above proverb last year in March!  After some time, I have managed to get a photo together with this sweet lady!  Look forward to her gorgeous smile and excellent customer service when you visit the Bishan MRT Station’s ticketing office!
