Look at the photo below! You would think that this is a computer generated image. At least I was sure that it’s like that. Fortunately I was wrong, as this is a photographic masterpiece.

This amazing photo belongs to the Australian photographer Lincoln Harrison, who spent hours after hours taking night sky photos. The extreme long exposure, over 15 hours, made it possible to capture stars trails on the dark sky and for us to see this amazing images.

You know what is more amazing? According to dailymail.co.uk, Lincoln Harrison bought his first camera last year for a total different purpose: to make pictures of articles he was going to sale on eBay. This proves one more time that when somebody has talent, passion and willingness for hard work can get some outstanding results.

TiltShift is a web application(which works also offline thanks to Adobe AIR) developed by artandmobile.com which gives your photos a tilt-shift photography effect that normally requires expensive special lenses or Photoshop post-processing. Tilt-shift photography means usually miniature effect but this is not exclusively as you can transform photographs of any kind with TiltShift and get amazing results.

An architectural office in Ohio, USA, found an interesting solution for combining classical architecture with modern needs of a branding firm. The result shows that it can reach a balance between old and new and can be interpreted as a viable solution.

Mlicki is a branding agency in Ohio. Dealing with clients image, thinking, designing and analyzing every detail, from stationery to logos and slogans. They need to turn the picture interesting, innovative and classical architecture located in the headquarters were not fully fit with the need for freshness. They called at the office of Jonathan Barnes Architecture aiming to find a balance between new and old.

The result? A cool place to work, but I wouldn’t mind living there. See for yourself below.

The planet zero

The Planet Zero is a game style promotion website which point users toward zero emission mechanism. This Flash website urge users to think of an not to far away future where all cars will be Electric Vehicles (EV) that will not emit any harmful gases like CO2.

San Diego Safari Park

Built for San Diego Zoo, the Safari Park game is a nice piece of Flash code. Cross the sun-baked Savanna and trek through Gorilla Forest, while you collect all the cards can be a fun way to learn about San Diego Zoo.

Tipping etiquette around the world

You know what’s a tip, right? Let me guess you might think to tip as in advice. No, no. I’m talking about restaurants and bars tip.

In term of restaurant tip you may think to an amount of extra money added to your bill that you are not forced, but willing to pay for the excellent service you just got. In some countries or regions of that particular country the tip is already include in your bill. Somehow not nice, because if I don’t like the service than I don’t want to give a tip. Other countries don’t accept tip of any kind.

You got my point right? A lot of places, a lot of rules.

People at Mint.com, a website that it’s offering financial services, were kind enough to develop a map with tipping etiquette around the world (at least the most well-known destinations for tourists). Check it, you might get amazed about the different tipping habits.

iPhone photograhy workflow and apps recommendation

If you’ll visit my photoblog you’ll see that I like taking photos. The only problem is that I cannot carry everywhere my DSLR camera (I think it’s obvious why) and then I have to take advantage of my iPhone’s camera. I have also a pocket camera, but to be honest the iPhone camera is better. Now, don’t expect that you’ll have the same quality and features with an iPhone like with your DSLR, but there are some things you can do to reach a decent quality.

Beside the well-know advices (e.g. shoot in good like, frame correctly, avoid shaking and so on…) when it comes to iPhone it’s also important the apps that you’re using to achieve some tasks. In this case photography. Please remember that this is my personal workflow that I’m sharing with you. I don’t sustain that it’s the best one or the apps that I’m using are the most fine ones. I’m sure that there are some other good tools out there, but this is working for me and I hope will work for you.

Let’s proceed.

Taking photos

The build in apps for taking pictures in iPhone is a pretty decent one. But I’ve found some alternatives that are excellent. Not all are free, but still the prices are acceptable.

Camera+

Camera+ is one of the best apps for iPhone’s camera. Great usability and a lot of features like:

- Touch Exposure & Focus
- Scene modes and flash
- Crops let you frame your pics perfectly
- Dozens of amazing effects

just to remember a couple of them. The most useful feature for me is the Touch Exposure and Focus. This will let you focus on something (e.g. like a flower), but drag the Exposure on an area where the luminosity is best for your photo (like you see in the second screenshot above). With this feature you obtain clear and sharp photos with good exposure. The price is also acceptable (99$ cents at the time when this article was posted)

ProCamera

ProCamera is my 2nd choice, not because it’s worst than Camera+ but due to the fact that I got good with Camera+ and I have a better feeling using it. I think it’s a matter of “getting used to…”

ProCamera incorporates state-of-the-art technologies to let you capture stunning photos and videos with your iPhone. Any tool is as powerful as its handling. ProCamera meets this requirement by giving you intuitive and fast control over all of its features:

- antishake
- self-timer
- virtual horizon and grids
- rapidfire burst

A little bit more expensive (2.99$) than Camera+, ProCamera is something to consider as well for taking your photos.

I use this two applications and I think it’s enough. Let’s go to the next step.

Post processing

No matter how good the camera is (even with DSLR ones) a little bit of photography post processing is helpful and may add the spark that every image needs. Here I have also two apps that I use frequently.

Filterstorm

Up to now, I couldn’t found anything to beat this apps for iPhone. The number of features here is amazing and it can be compare with a software developed for post processing photos on Mac. Something like Acorn or Pixelmator. Filterstorm has a lot of features. And I mean a lot:

- Ability to apply adjustments to entire image, by brush, gradient, color range, vignette, or selecting opacity.
- Send images via Email, FTP, Flickr, and Dropbox
- Export images up to 22MP (iPad2) or 7.5MP (iPad/iPhone 4)
- Save edits as automations to apply to other images
- Curves: Luminance, RGB, Red, Green, Blue, Cyan, Magenta, Yellow
- Adjust brush size, softness, and opacity
- Brightness
- Contrast
- Color balance
- White point picker
- Temperature
- Saturation
- Text tool
- Black and white fine-tuning
- 30-step Visual History
- Cropping, with the ability to specify aspect ratio
- Scaling/Scale to Fit
- Rotation & Image Straightening
- Add Borders
- Combine multiple exposures
- Vignetting
- Sharpen
- Tone map (Simulated HDR)
- Blur
- Noise reduction
- Add noise
- Clone Tool
- EXIF support for JPEG and some RAWs
- IPTC support: For a full list of supported metadata tags

This is one of the most expensive apps that I have, but I don’t regret the money spend. When I say “expensive” I mean compared to free ones. The price is 3.99$ (a little bit cheaper than a BigMac at McDonalds here where I live), but it worth every cent.

If you look at the screenshots above and then you download and see something slightly different, don’t worry, you just have the new version. I didn’t updated mine.

PS Express

I think you figure it already that PS is coming from Photoshop. This is my second alternative to Filterstorm. Even if I’m a big fan of Photoshop, this Express version is offering less features than Filterstorm. Still everything comes with a price and the price for PS Express is unbeatable: FREE

- Color: Exposure, Saturation, Tint, Black and White, and Contrast
- Filters: Sketch, Soft Focus, and Sharpen

Photography sharing

Skipping Facebook, Google, Yahoo social networks (which are not actually photo albums) I use to expose my photos in three places: My photoblog, Picasa Album and Flickr. For my photoblog I use mostly DSLR photos (you can imagine why) and I upload them manually. For Picasa and Flickr I add some of my best mobile photos using the following applications on my iPhone:

Flickr for iPhone

There is not too much to say here. You can upload, share, edit, tag your photos or check images from other people on Flickr. It has decent features that allow me to do my tasks on Flickr without my Mac. By the way, this application is FREE as the majority of those offered by social networks.

Piconhand

This is the application that I use to upload and manage my Picasa albums from iPhone. It’s not officially supported by Google, but (I’m not very sure of this) I remember that I couldn’t find any official apps for Picasa. This one was the best that I could find and it’s doing a great job.

- Create and delete albums
- Share album links via email
- Create and delete photos
- Batch upload

Inspirational macro insects photography

Surfing the Internet I came across some absolutely amazing macro images and felt that an inspirational article about this kind of photography might be good. I got the photo from many places and I tried not to break any copyright rules, but here is the deal. If you feel that I add here a photography of yours and you don’t want this, please let me know and I’ll remove it.

Why insects? Maybe because I feel that there are too less blogs out there pointing out to this type of photography. I’m against discrimination of any kind. You’ll see that a close out photo of a fly can be very interesting. Of course, it’s not so nice when you have lunch out on terrace and the fly is buzzing you…

I try to give back the copyrights to their authors by placing a link under the images with their right owner, but in some cases the name is actually a nickname, so I don’t know the real person who took the respective photography. Nevertheless if something bother you, please contact me.

Most of us will not argue about the fact that the Internet browser is the most frequently used computer program on our personal computers. Without a browser we would have no route to our online information.

In the past, our browser interfaces were a bit dull however, nowadays, there is no reason why the user should have to tolerate anything lackluster. When it comes to searching for a browser theme, we now have a plethora of design options literally at our fingertips.

Designing and creating browser themes can be a challenging endeavor especially if you are wanting to create a design interface that performs within diverse browsers (Google Chrome, Firefox, and IE for example).

This being said, important consideration must be taken when figuring out your approach for internet browser interface design.
