Well the product has been on the market for a few years.. and I see so many people struggle with getting some of the basics of SharePoint right. If you are looking at starting SharePoint development or have been developing sites on SharePoint here is one cool sample site you should look at.

Microsoft has made available a great sample site built to showcase the WCM capabilities of SharePoint. Head over to http://www.mssharepointdeveloper.com/ and get hold of the Adventureworks demo site and the sample MSDN guided modules and demos.

The new SharePoint On The Web modules cover the following topics:

Getting Started with SharePoint Development on the Web
Site Structure and Branding
Custom Field Types and Mode
FBA Authentication
Web Interoperability
SharePoint Search
Content Deployment
Minimal Publishing Site Definition
Enabling Social Networking
Silverlight and SharePoint

All the training modules and the Installer can be downloaded from :...<br/>

Most of them I'm speaking at which causes some interesting dynamics. The first dynamic is I invariably am preparing for the sessions before I deliver them. I'm not saying that I'm not prepared for my sessions – just that I always do a dry run within 24 hours of my session to make sure that all my demos work. (Presenters will tell you that updates love to break demos.)

Add to that I'm generally spending a ton of time in discussions with my fellow speakers, MVPs, notables, and just answering questions. The net effect is that I really don't have much time to go to sessions while I'm at a conference. Yet, one of the common questions I get is &quot;Have you seen any good sessions?&quot; The problem is the truth is no… because I haven't seen any sessions. I hesitate to stop at no lest someone get the wrong impression.

In all honesty, the other problem with going to sessions is that I have to be keenly interested in the topic. I've got so many things...<br/>

Here is an overview of Bob’s presentation which he will be presenting at the Adelaide SharePoint User Group’s meeting on July 21st.
Title: Enterprise Provisioning
OVERVIEW/CONTENT
Organisations implementing MOSS are likely to face a number of challenges in integrating SharePoint with their enterprise systems … especially those that wish to implement SharePoint across a heterogeneous enterprise environment.
Typical challenges include supporting multiple directories for user definitions; support for a multi forest/domain Active Directory environment, particularly where there are users who move between forests/domains; implementing real-time compliance based upon changes to authoritative sources including user definitions and information; and allowing SharePoint ( “My Site”) to be a dynamic enterprise wide user self-service White Pages.
This presentation shows how the above challenges can be overcome with some innovative use of Microsoft Identity LifeCycle Manager (ILM2007). ...<br/>

Last year I did a blog post on how I use Log Parser to peruse the IIS logs from this site to see how many people come here, what they look at, where they come from, etc. Those of you that have seen me at conferences or talked to me in person have no doubt heard the hilarious byproduct of that. Seems a few images on my web site are very popular with the kids at MySpace. They really like that yellow bird image as their background. While I'm flattered by the attention, honest I am, they seem unable to copy it down, so they're all hotlinking off of my site. That's right, these hoodlums are stealing bandwidth right out of the hands of you hardworking SharePoint enthusiasts. Every time you go to download one of my blog posts or a netcast recording those guys are slowing you down. I decided I wouldn't stand for it anymore; I was going to do something about it to defend your honor. In the past I've gone through my IIS logs to see which MySpace pages are stealing my images, then I swap...<br/>

This should be it for a while…
I’ll be speaking at the SharePoint Users Group of Indiana (SPIN) in Indianapolis, IN on August 26, 2009 @ 6p. Rob Bogue, my friend and colleague on a few projects including www.mssharepointdeveloper.com, got me to finally commit to coming up after I had to reschedule a few times on him. This time, no rescheduling! Looking forward to it and thanks for having me Rob!
Here’s the session I’ll be presenting:
Building &amp; Configuring Solutions on SharePoint Server 2007 for High Performance
Performance should be one of the top areas of focus on everyone's mind when embarking on a Internet facing Microsoft Office Server 2007 site. In this session we'll look at the built-in caching capabilities in the SharePoint platform, including disk-based and page output caching. In addition we'll take a look at various hot-button issues...<br/>

If you've ever seen Andrew speak at a conference (Microsoft TechEd, SharePoint Connections, etc.) you know this will be a great presentation filled with tons of real world advice from the work Andrew has done with clients on large scale deployments of SharePoint. Andrew is perhaps best known for his Web Content Management expertise in the SharePoint platform but he's also a powerful developer. Andrew and I worked together with Paul Andrew on http://www.mssharepointdeveloper.com/ where any ASP.NET developer can get 10 sessions on the basics of developing for SharePoint for free.

The abstract he provided for this session is:

Mindsharp, Nintex, and Combined Knowledge are sponsoring a Global SharePoint Survey. This is an independent survey that you can fill out to let them know about your experience with adoption and usage of SharePoint from your perspective. The survey is quick (only 15 questions) and most questions are multiple choice. You could probably let your cat or two year old fill it out (I did) but also consider taking a few minutes to put some thought behind it (unlike what I did).
In the end, you get a chance to win a conference pass to the Microsoft SharePoint Conference 2009 (October 19-22) in Las Vegas. This pass is worth $1,119 USD if purchased with real money. A winner will be drawn randomly after the closing of the survey July 17th then notified by email and/or phone. Note the contest is *only* for the conference pass. You still need to provide a way to get there and pay for your hotel, mini-bar, and pub crawl expenses (and trust me, when you hang with SharePoint...<br/>

I promised to do a follow up post here to clear up some misconceptions about this subject with respect to SharePoint.
What is the issue?
Windows Server 2003 SP1 introduced a loopback security check. This feature is obviously also present in Windows Server 2008. The feature prevents access to a web application using a fully qualified domain name (FQDN) if an attempt to access it takes place from a machine that hosts that application. The end result is a 401.1 Access Denied from the web server and a logon failure in the event log.
Unfortunately 401.1 is not really helpful as this error code means there is a problem with the user credentials. Of course, the HTTP spec doesn’t know about security features in a vendor’s implementation so there can’t be a HTTP error code for such a feature. This can lead...<br/>

High Performance Solutions on SharePoint Server 2007
Performance should be one of the top areas of focus on everyone's mind when embarking on a Internet facing SharePoint Server 2007 site. In this session we'll look at the built-in caching capabilities. Topics include object model techniques, how to properly manage memory in order to avoid the dreaded OutOfMemory exception, key sizing numbers to keep in mind when architecting your implementation and minimizing the page payload to speed up those page load times.

The idea behind this concept is that while you’re typing a query in the search box, asynchronously the query is already executed and the results are being displayed. Every time the query is changed, the results will be updated dynamically. This will allow users to see the results without going to the Search Results page, and even more: they don’t have to go back to alter their query. In such a scenario you want to avoid full page postbacks of course, so AJAX-techniques have to be used to accomplish this. But during the last couple of weeks I’ve become a really big fan of using jQuery Javascript Library in SharePoint sites, and it happens to be that the search-as-you-type functionality can be created with the help of jQuery very...<br/>

This morning at 12:40AM I was lucky enough to have the honour of being a SharePoint MVP for a 2nd year running!
“Dear Daniel Brown,
Congratulations! We are pleased to present you with the 2009 Microsoft® MVP Award! This award is given to exceptional technical community leaders who actively share their high quality, real world expertise with others. We appreciate your outstanding contributions in SharePoint Server technical communities during the past year.”
This year is a key year in the SharePoint &amp; Microsoft space, as it will see the launch of Office 2010, SharePoint 2010, Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 R2 and many new and exciting products.
I hope I can continue my community efforts and help the knowledge transfer, social networking and health of the SharePoint community as well as branching out with the Australian Computer Society in matters of I.T policy, regulation and litigation.
-Daniel
P.S. Don't forget about the Adelaide SharePoint User Group...<br/>

This of course is very straight forward but the complication here was that it needed to be available to an anonymous user who would consume the XML stream.

After a little thought I decided that we could use the &quot;owssvr.dll&quot; method. For those that have not used this before it is very simple. You make a call to the following URL:

http://{siteurl}/_vti_bin/owssvr.dll

Pass it a few parameters and then an XML stream is returned. So to test this I used the posts list on my blog with the following URL:

http://www.helloitsliam.com/_vti_bin/owssvr.dll?Cmd=Display&amp;List={A462AB0D-84CF-4918-9950-D562530A5377}&amp;XMLDATA=TRUE

The GUID that you pass is the actual GUID for the list that you wish to retrieve the data from. I tried this and all worked well until I tried it as an anonymous user to the site. When I tried it as a logged in user it came back with a blank page. Very strange I thought,...<br/>

As you may know, the two products, Office Project Server 2007 and Office SharePoint Server 2007 have plenty of integration points and overlap between the two. Now, developers heading to the Project Conference 2009 in sunny Phoenix, Arizona September 14-17, 2009 can now get a SharePoint development primer as I’m presenting the only SharePoint development session there:

Introduction to SharePoint for Developers

Project Server's integration with SharePoint facilitates collaborating on projects within an organization and members of a team. With this integration, developers can extend both platforms to satisfy specific and custom requirements to facilitate unique business processes and add new functionality to improve productivity and efficiency. In this session you will learn what is involved in developing custom solutions for SharePoint.

Hope to see you there!

Many thanks to the SDN crowd and those that attended my sessions and of course the SharePint event afterwards. It was a very impressive event in terms of organisation and the other great speakers and content.
Here are the slide decks from my three sessions as promised. Mythbusters: debunking common SharePoint Farm Misconceptions. Kerberos Part 1: No ticket touting here, does SharePoint add another head. Kerberos Part 2: “Advanced” Scenarios and additional considerations.
All of the content was updated for the SDN event, with Mythbusters including new details on a topic I will be expanding on more in the future – Agile Farms. It was the Kerberos sessions that have changed the most however, with more complete coverage and including updates to deal with some of the increasingly common misinformation out there on this subject. The sessions are now much more balanced, and enough time on each...<br/>

Since I released Part One of this series into the wild there have been many heated discussions around SharePoint and Test Driven Development. As always, Andrew Woodward has a great deal to say on the subject; in fact, we recorded a SharePoint Podshow on this very subject at the European Best Practices conference (and traded a few well-meaning jabs during his presentation). During the discussion we came to the conclusion that there are some fundamental software development processes lacking in most custom development projects and that TDD, while we may disagree on its overall value within the quality assurance lifecycle, plays an important role in helping to improve the overall quality of custom software.

Recently, fellow SharePoint MVP Sahil Malik authored a post in which he dismisses TDD as having little to no value in SharePoint development projects. He summarized with the following quote: &quot; So, TDD + SharePoint 2007? Well – screw it! Not worth it IMO&quot;. As usual,...<br/>

While I was out at SPTechCon Laura Rogers and Mark Miller of EndUserSharePoint did a quick interview of me. They were really bored that day. It's a pretty short watch, about 6:30.

I also got the word today that I was reawarded the MVP award from Microsoft. It's been a great ride and I'm very grateful to have been given the opportunities I've been given. Congratulations to all the other MVPs that have gotten the nod today.

Stick to the product if you can. SharePoint provides a lot of functionality out of the box - focus on these quick wins and don't immediately switch over to Visual Studio and start writing code.
2.&#160; Built to last SharePoint projects are in continuous evolution so you need to develop in such a way that it is easy to evolve and to extend. Take a look at site definitions vs site templates for example.
3. Do not GAC every web part you develop. By the way, there are number of SharePoint development artifacts which you need to add to the Global Assembly Cache (GAC) such as receivers -feature receivers as well as other event receivers - timer jobs and workflow assemblies.
4. Keep your custom site definitions as minimal as possible. A long debate started after Joel's post on the topic - Do you really need a site definition . They are nothing more than a &quot;skeleton&quot; for attaching programmatic elements in the form of features and should be deployed as solution packages. ...<br/>

It took some time, but we finally got the code cleaned up and posted for you to download and kick the tires too.
Now some will see this as a replacement to the Content Query Web Part (CQWP)… but it isn’t. That is still the ideal way to aggregate content within an existing site collection as it contains a robust caching and is tweaked for peak performance of highly trafficked sites.
What we set out to do was to work on a solution that would do the following: Aggregate content across site collections Aggregate content from external sources
So after considerable planning; here’s what we came up with… a detailed UML diagram complete with loads of test cases:...<br/>

It's about site definition vs site templates.

I strongly believe that there are a couple of&#160; reasons for using custom site definitions: Better overall performance of using site definitions instead of site templates for creating sites More control and flexibility in building a specific solution. One thing to keep in mind though is to keep your custom site definitions as minimal as possible and to use the SharePoint Features framework to add functionality. Site templates are basically black boxes where you have limited control over the way that they are working - so when you get into trouble you're stuck. It is easier to add additional functionality to site which are developed using a site definition in contrast with these built using a site template.
The main reason for choosing site templates is that overall it takes less effort to create a site template....<br/>

(Released december 2008 - tip: there is a different web part for Dynamics CRM 3.0)
The List Web Part for Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0 provides a way to view and update Microsoft Dynamics CRM records using a Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 SP1 or Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 SP1 Web site. Microsoft Dynamics CRM users can create shared or personal List Web Parts of Microsoft Dynamics CRM records from a SharePoint Web site, open records in Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0 from the List Web Part, and create connected List Web Parts. Most people tend to use Office applications quite a lot in their daily job so why not integrate your CRM and ERP from within Office. Dynamics Snap applications show how information workers can work with data out of Dynamics CRM and Dynamics from within their Office applications (This is what Microsoft calls a Office Business Applications or OBA)
One that I tried out recently - Microsoft Dynamics Snap for Microsoft Dynamics AX on Codeplex – of which the current release supports Dynamics AX 2009. There are two different snaps available for Dynamics AX 2009:
Offline Expense - This snap-in enables expenses to be entered in Excel while disconnected from the corporate network, and then posted to Dynamics AX at a later time. This snap-in uses WCF-based services and LINQ to retrieve data from Dynamics AX, and uses the Application...<br/>

This year’s event will be held at University of North Florida and like all others, is free to all who want to register! Make sure you register early… it’s sure to “sell out” with an average attendance of 300+ in previous years.
I’m helping them arrange a SharePoint track of sessions if we get enough speakers. Interested? Submit a session or two at the official site:

In this episode I talk about the topics that came up at SPTechCon and announce some sessions at the SharePoint conference. I also discuss the physics behind why a watched pot never boils. The video is jerky, it's not just you. (Unless you're listening to the MP3 version, then the video is great and I might be more handsome than ever)

Well, I upgraded my iPhone 3G last week to the latest iPhone 3.0 OS and I like the new features such as search, snappier texting etc., but the most interesting thing to me was noticing something totally unrelated. I’ve been playing Mafia Wars on iPhone for a while. One of the great annoyances for me, and many other people if you read the Zynga message boards, has been that the game seems to leak memory and crash every so often. When fighting, you can generally get about 30 fights in before you have to restart the game or face a sure crash.
Now I upgraded ONLY the iPhone OS. The Mafia Wars app remained untouched. I noticed that now I’m able to complete all 114 fights built up over night without the need to restart the app and without the app crashing on me. Well… that’s interesting, isn’t it? People have been calling the app bad and poor programming for months yet, it seems to me, since only the Apple OS was upgraded (and with it the APIs), and because of it, suddenly...<br/>

We recently announced to all our registered delegates about the “Ask the Experts” Keynote panel that will be held at NZSPC on Friday, July 03, 2009 starting at 11:15 AM to 12:15 PM (New Zealand Time) in the Duxton Ballroom. You can now post your questions on the user group site.

So far we have received the following questions. We’ll take the best one’s and answer these at the conference. I will also post answers on my blog for some of these.
Questions so far..

User Adoption - There are lots of books about SharePoint on the market. If we customise our SharePoint user interface will these books still be useful to my users?

Web Content Management - I know there is the reusable snippets library which is great for small pieces of content. But how can I reuse whole pages so they appear in different parts of my website without sending the user to another part of the site?

Infrastructure - Can you describe some of the challenges of setting up Kerberos authentication in load...<br/>

But which form solution is best for you - the OOB forms, InfoPath, customized .net Web forms or dataView/form Web part? It depends on a number of considerations, including requirements, server/infrastructure, licensing options, scalability and, importantly, education around what's available and what each option can do. For example, I get &quot;oh, we knew about InfoPath but we didn't know it could do X,Y and Z&quot;. And it's rare that I come across an implementation that doesn't require some degree of form customization or an extension to or 'fix' of an earlier customization. I still think InfoPath is underutilized in a number of deployments I come across, largely from lack of knowledge about the product and its capabilities.
InfoPath's not something I work frequently with, but over the past few months I've accumulated a list of common questions I've received while working with customers on InfoPath slash...<br/>
