SELF-TALK

I was talking with a dear friend of mine this past week. He commented how he’d shifted his self talk. And instead of using nasty names as we so often do with our selves, he had begun using pet names.

He was actually calling himself “honey” and it was changing his inner dialogue.

Before you laugh, consider this.
You’ve heard me talk about how most of our 50,000 daily thoughts are repetitive thoughts from the day before. And how of those 50,000 thoughts more than 70% of them are self deprecating and super negative.

What if you turned that around?
What if you flipped the percentages in your favor?
What if you gave yourself some love instead of the constant beating up attitude?

You look at your to-do list and instead of saying, “I have so much to do. I’m such a mess.”

Try this: “Hey honey, you can only do your best with this. Let’s prioritize it and figure out what you can realistically get done today. And maybe look at what’s most important.”

Sound crazy?
Yeah, well, ya know I’m like that.

Try it.
Then you tell me who’s crazy.

The person who treats themselves gently and with love.
Or the person who calls themselves nasty names and is impatient with themselves.

Okay, honey, sweetheart, darling!

You want more money, right?

But what are you focusing on? Because… if you’re focused on the wrong shit, you’ll miss the opportunities that are all around you.

Last week I went to Anaheim for a Vixen gig. On Thursday morning, I walked over to the NAMM show (National Association of Music Merchants). It was about a mile hike and on the way back, I noticed a shiny dime on the pavement.

Now… this was a BUSY pedestrian walkway. Lots of NAMM attendees and exhibitors, people en route way to their jobs, and more than a couple of homeless people as well. All shapes and sizes walked on this sidewalk.

I decided to do a test. I picked up the dime and glanced around. Nobody was paying any attention to me so I carefully placed the dime on a ledge that ran parallel to the sidewalk. Much easier to spot it that way. I was 100% positive that the sun would throw a glint off the shiny dime right into someone’s eye and they’d pick it up.

I went back to my hotel and proceeded to get ready for an on-camera interview back at the NAMM show. After some lunch, I headed back along the same path to the Convention Center. As I got closer to the ledge where I had placed the auspicious dime, I felt my heart beat faster.

Would it still be there?
Would anyone have picked it up?
Would it go completely unnoticed?

Finally, I got to the ledge. There it was. Shining it all of its ten cent glory. Waiting for anyone to come along and pick it up. At least two hundred people must’ve strolled right past it. Too busy staring at their phones or looking cool in their RayBans to notice a mere dime.

Maybe some folks saw it and ignored it because, after all, it’s only a dime right?
Maybe some folks saw it and left it there for a homeless person.
Maybe some folks simply walked right past in a hurry to get to wherever they were going and were so busy thinking about their day, they DIDN’T REALLY LOOK!!!!

I picked it up and wanted to laugh like a lunatic right then and there. I wanted to shout:

“Do you know that this dime, this very dime could be the beginning of a million dollars?” (In fact, it takes 10 million dimes to make a million dollars. Only 9 million, nine hundred and ninety nine thousand and nine hundred and ninety nine more dimes to go.)

“Did nobody spot this money sitting here waiting for you to claim it????? Do you not see the opportunity around you?”

Of course, being a somewhat mostly sane person, I refrained from such activity.

Instead, I pocketed the dime and immediately grinned from ear to ear. Feeling like I had offered it to the Universe to give to someone else and it had magically returned to me.

Where are you not seeing what’s right in front of you?
Where are your eyes not open?
What does it look like for you to become aware of what you are truly capable of?

Yeah. Step up.

You probably already know I play in a rock band. In fact, I play in a few of ’em.

I’m best known for playing bass in Vixen but I’m also the guitarist/singer for Bubble, an indie pop/punk band. And never one to be bored, I play bass for Joe Elliott’s side project, the Down n Outz.

But I also used to play in another band. You might be in this band, too.

It’s called, “The Starving Artist” band.

THE STARVING ARTIST BAND

A funny thing happened on the way to my creativity today. I listened to the Starving Artist Band and they reminded me of how:

• It probably won’t work out.
• My ideas are unoriginal.
• I’m not as good as _________________. (Fill in the blank with someone who is obvs so much more talented, better and successful than moi.)
• I’ll never make any money at my creativity because I’m a loser.
• The good stuff only happens to other people.

Ahhhh. You’re nodding your head.

You see, the path of creativity is littered with doubt, jealousy, fear and a whole bunch of other negative emotions.

So who is in this Starving Artist Band anyway?

Lead Vocals: Doubting Debbie.
Lead Guitar: Egomaniacal Egbert.
Rhythm Guitar: Jealous Jackie.
Bass Guitar: Fearful Frank.
Drums: Anxious Anthony.

Together they make really, really, really shitty music.

Like…. bad. Atonal in the worst way.

So what’s a creative genius to do?

INNER ROCKSTAR

You need to find your inner voice. Stop listening to that shitty band. No matter how loudly they play in your head. Fire them! Kick ’em off the stage.

Make room for your Inner Rockstar.

Your Inner Rockstar is your witness. It knows what your true intentions are. It knows you’re scared. But it believes in you. 100%.

Your Inner Rockstar listens.
Your Inner Rockstar allows.
Your Inner Rockstar guides.

So how do you get that Starving Artist Band off stage and let your Inner Rockstar take over?

1. In your mind have your Inner Rockstar give each member of the SA Band a hug. Reassure them that it’s okay. You understand their fears. You love them.
2. Ask a question to your Inner Rockstar.
3. Write a letter from your Inner Rockstar to yourself to answer that question.
4. BONUS: Do this daily for 7 days and watch your creativity soar.

The only thing separating you from your creative success is you.

It ain’t gonna happen if you sit there thinking about it. It does take action. Action with intention. Action with integrity. Action with love.

It’s you stepping into your deepest purpose.
It’s you shining like a fucking diamond, brighter and bolder than you ever thought possible.

Your Inner Rockstar is your inner witness.
Your IR is that piece of you that hears what you think.
That allows you to shift your emotions on a whim.

Your Inner Rockstar is who you need to marry.

Right fucking now.

When you date your IR, this is what happens:

1. You keep getting a bit of success but not the full on “Oh My God Is This Really Happening” type of success you dream about.
2. You wonder if you have ‘what it takes’. (You do by the way.)
3. You compare yourself to shiny bright objects in your field and struggle not to get mad and all jealousy-fueled at them. (jelly, baby.)
4. You believe in yourself for a while and then get fed up after a week of that and figure “It doesn’t work for me.” It will. It will.
5. You get some bad news, big bills, a shitty reaction, maybe even you get FIRED and you think… “What the fuck is this?” (See “trust” below.)

Let’s rip those apart one by one.

A BIT OF SUCCESS

First of all, who wants a ‘bit of success’? What the hell? Do you ever ask a nine year old “What do you want to be when you grow up?” and they respond… “I’d like to be a little bit successful but I’m willing to settle and compromise and pretty much give up.”

HELL NO! Duh right?

Having a ‘bit of success’ means you’ve settled. You’ve gotten comfortable. You don’t want to rock the boat. It’s a lot like being a shitty marriage but, hey, at least it’s a marriage right? A warm body next to you is better than none right?

WRONG!

Listen up. You’re here to have an impact. And how you show up in every single area of your life is going to be a result of how you do this one thing.

Stop settling for a bit of success. Your life, your business, your dreams, your art, your very essence is crying out for the big ride.
The big adventure.
It’s yours.

WHAT IT TAKES

Oh that old ploy. That’s the voice of doubt. Usually planted by years of rejections, disappointments, teachers, well-intentioned parents who whisper things like “Honey, just go for second place. That way you won’t be depressed.”

Having what it takes means you worry about being:

• good enough.
• old enough.
• young enough.
• smart enough.
• fast enough.

You are enough. Geeeeeez. If your dream feels right within you, then you’re enough. What do I mean? Well, for instance if you’re a 52 year old dude and you’re 5′ 4″ and you tell me your dream is to be the center forward for some big basketball team? I’d have to ask you if that dream honestly-truly-really-1000% sits HONESTLY right within you. Because c’mon… there are some things with physical limitations that your Inner Rockstar knows and sees, too.

So… to summarize. You are enough.

Period.

No, wait. You’re MORE than enough. Honey, darlin’, sugar. You’re so loved you don’t even realize it. Step into that love that you carry within you. Enough with enough!!!!!!

COMPARISON

Comparing is one of my favorites because it often comes up with my clients who say “I’m doing research of my competition.” Or “I’m checking out what other people have done before me and been successful.”

Yeah. How’d that go?
Usually you go down lots of ‘biz porn’ rabbit holes with promises of riches in a matter of weeks. (Yes, that’s possible but ONLY if you believe it in your core.)

And here’s the thing. THE BIG FAT HAIRY THING GLARING AT YOU……..

If someone else did their thing… their way…. with their words… then THAT HAS BEEN DONE.

And…… (you knew there was an and right?)

And…. you have do things YOUR way.

Do not seek out blueprints, formulas, success systems or anything else. Yes, understand how to sell and package what you’re doing but DO IT YOUR WAY.

As for the ‘jelly’? You know that jealousy shit is gonna kill ya.

There’s ALWAYS enough to go around.

GIVING UP

Sometimes you really do commit. You really do change up your shizzle and create new awesome habits that support you and your big dreams.

Then you sit back and wait for the cashola to come steamrolling in.

Bzzzzzzzzzz.

You gotta keep at it. You gotta LOVE what you’re doing soooooo much that you keep showing up like that.

Time and space crash together in the here and now. (Mathematically proven!) So you gotta keep focusing on the here and now and giving it your all. Give it your best.

Then…. at some point, it will crash together with how you’ve been showing up and you WILL get those amazing-oh-my-god results you dream about.

Consistency, honey. Consistency. Oh yeah. And that P word….. Patience. (Yes, it’s a song title, too.)

TRUST

You finally commit. You marry your Inner Rockstar. You show up in your life like you really mean it. You are fucking committed from head to toe.

Then your laptop dies. The car has a flat tire. Your boss calls and says you’re fired.

Wait. Wasn’t this all supposed to be smooooooth sailing from here on out?

Nope. Never said nothin’ about smoooooooth sailing.

Two things you gotta do.

1. Trust. Trust that everything is working out perfectly for you. NO MATTER HOW SHITTY AND HORRIBLE IT SEEMS. To do that, you gotta change your energy and stop focusing on how f’d it is and find something, find ANYTHING to feel really good about. Find the good. Find the appreciation. TRUST.
2. Then ask yourself, “What is the gift in this obstacle?”

Because… The obstacle is the path.

You are a rockstar.

Marry your Inner Rockstar. Today. Just say “I do” to yourself. Do it now.

There’s no halfway with me.

I’m either 100% in or I’m 100% out.

Imagine you’re standing on the diving board. You’re up high. It’s rather terrifying. Maybe you’re 20 feet up. Maybe you’re 5 feet up and it’s your first dive. Either way, the moment you decide to dive, and you run down that board and jump… you’re in midair. There’s no turning back. You’re all in.

That’s how I operate. Go all in. Go for gusto. And rockers?

If you’ve been following me for any length of time you know that once in a while I talk about my ‘fun’ times with feeling anxious and overwhelmed.

I’ve never been diagnosed or medicated as I don’t like western meds. I have however had situations where I felt paralyzed and full of unbelievable fear that even though I knew it was in my head, I couldn’t seem to escape it.

Not something I’d wish on anyone.

Many of you have written to me and said that you have challenges like this as well.

So I finally jumped off the diving board and decided to give essential oils a try.

Is it instant?
Do they work?
Will oils help you?

INSTANT RELIEF

Yes if…. if you’re working with the right oils for you and the oils are high quality. At first, I tried ‘el cheapo’ stuff from Amazon. I got next to no relief. Then I signed up with a company for the real stuff. And whammo. Into the diffuser and woah. The peppermint wafted into my desk area and I felt my anxiety being lifted. It was a cloud of relief.

It didn’t make my dark cloud of whatever-the-fuck-that-nasty-thinking-is-disappear-forever but it allowed me to step back enough that I could return into the present moment so I could appreciate how great my life is. And THAT… is priceless.

DO THEY WORK

I am never one to say “what works for me will work for you”. Just not how I roll. So far, in my limited experience, I’m incredibly happy with the results. (In fact, I just sniffed the exuberantly cheerful lemon oil again for a ‘joy lift’.)

WILL OILS HELP YOU

Again, chances are that yes, they’ll help you. I’ve got this big book of how to use essential oils and how to apply them, diffuse them, etc etc. The studies are becoming more and more expansive. The results are more and more impressive.

Here’s how I see it. If going to a doctor results in tons of tests and possibly medications and most of the time, they are hoping they ‘might’ get it right to put a bandaid on your symptoms….

Then in comparison, spending a few dollars on some essential oils is nothing to improve my chances for wellness, happiness, peaceful-energy and overall kickassedness.

MY NEW SAYING

Yep. I’ve joined the cult. I walk around saying “There’s an oil for that.” Because… quite frankly, there IS an oil for that.

As someone who has been raw vegan, explored meditation techniques, read Yogananda and loves to feel good… I can promise you this:

Essential oils are the new black. They’re here to stay.

Good Things Come!

You’re going along, living your life and WHAM! A bunch of shit hits the fan and immediately, you think, I’m fucked.

I get it. 

CLICK TO TWEET: Just like the lotus, we too have the ability to rise from the mud, bloom out of the darkness and radiate into the world.

In one 24 hour period, we hit a natural gas line in our backyard, had a flat tire and my imac was stuck on some weird vertical scroll and wouldn’t stop.

You can claim mercury retrograde but I like to think that life is constantly shifting and sometimes it just shifts all at once.

Here’s my own set of guidelines for playing the game of life when shit happens.

1. Don’t take anything personally. It’s not about you.
2. Deal with each situation one moment at a time.
3. Look for solutions rather than continuing to state how fucked you are.

Here’s what I discovered.

The Gas Line

We’ve been paying a small service fee for months for a gas repair service and guess what? It really works! The dude came out this morning and not only is he repairing the line but he’s replacing the whole thing as it’s from a bazillion years ago and completely not up to code. And yes, the cost is 100% covered. We will get an entirely new up-to-code gas line installed at zero cost to us. WIN!

The Flat Tire

We called AAA who showed up lickety split and put the spare on for me. Then we found a garage down the street that was still open after 5 pm and they fixed the flat. Total cost? $10. But the best part? The garage owners and employees were super cool and we will definitely take our vehicles there for repairs or tires or whatever. WIN!

The Vertical Scroll

The iMac that wouldn’t stop scrolling. I ran disk utility. I ran Clean my Mac. I started in safe mode and ran disk utility again. Nothing was helping. Then I noticed the bluetooth icon was flashing. The wireless keyboard needed new batteries. Boom. Done. Fixed. Okay, maybe that wasn’t a big win but the next time it happens? I’ll know what it means.

The point is… when you think of the amazing things, people, situations etc in your life. You can almost always trace them back to a previous situation that was probably not all that great. In fact, it probably sucked.

You learn what really matters when you lose someone. You find out how to love when you experience heartbreak. You uncover your own resourcefulness when you need money fast.

I met my husband when I was in the middle of an awful relationship with a boyfriend.
We rescued our dog who had been picked up on the streets of Miami eating rocks.
Living a moldy house in LA made us realize that it was time for a change and we found our dream home in Florida.

So the next time the shit hits the fan and you find yourself thinking how fucked you are… STOP.

Turn it into the biggest, most wondrous opportunity of your lifetime.

In the world of rock n roll where I’ve resided for most of my life, letting go typically means you don’t care. You get wasted and numb yourself to the pain. You no longer care what anyone thinks.

I’m talkin’ about letting go intentionally and consciously. 

This kind of letting go means releasing those pent up emotions that accumulate and become an undercurrent of anxiety, fear, and limiting beliefs.

First, there’s the question of why would you want to let go. Why surrender?

(And no, while I adore Cheap Trick beyond words, I’m not referencing their brilliant song, Surrender.)

I’m talking about what happens when you allow your feelings to simply be rather than suppress/numb them away.

Here’s the first cool thing to know about surrender.

Thoughts are a rationalization of emotions.

So once you truly release a feeling, your thoughts will shift, too.

Poof.

Just like that.

Here’s a second cool thing about surrender.

It doesn’t have to take a long time. We’re not talking months or years of hard work and concentrated effort here. Nope.

You can let go in an instant.

You make the conscious decision to let go of an emotion and as you realize this is possible, it happens.

• It’s not about who’s right and who’s wrong.
• It’s not about who owes you or what serves you.
• It’s not about being angry at someone because they deserve your rage.

Surrender is about you being the most ideal version of you.

When you shift into a more ‘good’ feeling emotion, you’ll vibrate at a higher level and that’s when you attract more of that stuff you probably want like more abundance, more love and more joy into your life.

How do you let go of anxiety?

Think of a situation that upsets you.

Maybe you have a pile of unpaid bills. Maybe you have someone in your life that keeps showing up in ways you don’t like. Maybe you don’t like your appearance. Maybe you’re not where you think you ‘should’ be in life.

1. Choose one scenario and allow yourself to feel anything that comes up.
2. Recognize the emotion.
3. Allow it to be there.

It’s okay.

Now, can you touch this emotion? Can you see it? Can you draw it out and make it into a tangible object?
No. Of course not.

Yet, this invisible force of limiting emotions will spin itself into limiting thoughts which transform into limiting beliefs which then inform us of our lack and undeservedness and any other myriad of nasty, yucky crapola.

Ask yourself if you can let this feeling go?
Do you want to let this feeling go?

Often we berate ourselves by thinking we ‘should’ know better.

We simply ‘shouldn’t’ feel a certain way because it’s childish.

Guess what?
Everyone has feelings of guilt, shame, fear, anger and pride that come up at the most inopportune times.

It’s the human condition.

Let’s let go.

Here’s 3 ways to let go of anxiety.

1. The next time you’re hanging out with your family and your buttons get pushed by a parent or sibling, pause and breathe. Let that emotion come up and pass through you. Imagine it’s rising up through you and out of you. Let it go. Rather than reacting how you usually would, take a pause. Take a deep breath. Walk away if you need to and get re-centered.
2. Think back to a childhood event that made you uncomfortable. Maybe a day in school where you were ridiculed or felt lonely. This one event has probably birthed thousands and thousands of thoughts. Any time you’ve remembered it, you’ve had thoughts about it. Now release the emotion that happened back then. Let it go. See it as smoke and vapor and it’s rising up from the ground and going into the cloud. Look at the peripheral emotions and feelings that arose from it. Let those go too.
3. Now focus on a current relationship in your life. The most common challenge in relationships is wanting the other person to be or behave a certain way that is more to our liking. Consider the emotion that comes up for you around a challenge like that. Visualize yourself with your arms out and your palms up. See yourself as completely open. When you are open you have to let go of whatever is in your hands. Think of this feeling as liquid and it’s pouring out of you. As it leaves, the feeling becomes lighter until it is merely vapor.

This scale is from David R Hawkins, MD who studied spirituality, emotions and the path to enlightenment extensively. As you move through the process of letting go of your emotions and the need to be right shifts into the ease of being, you will keep shifting up the level of emotions.

The higher up you go, the more you will attract what you truly seek because as we know, like attracts like.

What can you surrender today?

Yes, Mick. We know it’s on YOUR side.

But time is on my side, too. And you, my dear reader.. time is on your side as well.

There’s two parts to this story so stick with me.

IT WON’T MATTER

On any given day, you’re faced with a bazillion little, teensy, weensy choices to make.

• What should I have for breakfast?
• Should I do the 10 sit-ups I promised myself I would?
• How about that 15 minute meditation I said I was gonna start doing?
• Oh and I know I’m better off without this ______________. (Fill in the blank with your favorite comfort food.)
• Then there’s that savings plan.
• And getting out of the habit of complaining.
• Maybe that gym membership is a good idea.

Your health.
Your money.
Your relationships.
Your spiritual peacefulness.

Maybe you begin one new habit. Maybe you don’t.

Chances are, it won’t matter. Not for today. And probably not for tomorrow either.

Let’s face it. If you have a donut today, the world will not collapse.

If you don’t begin saying how you really feel, nobody will know.

If you wait to start saving your money just one more day…. will it really make any difference to your debts and overall financial state of affairs?

You’re right.

It won’t matter.

Not today. And not tomorrow.

COMPOUND

But those little choices will add up and up and up and up and up.

The choices you make and therefore the choices you don’t make, WILL MATTER over time. 

Look at this penny. 

If you saved one penny today. And tomorrow you doubled it. And then the next day you doubled it and on and on and on.

All of those little choices add up to big results IF you do them consistently and with the BELIEF that you’re getting results.

KNOW that what you choose impacts your life and the lives of everyone around you… over time.

Live consciously. Live boldly. Live without cynicism and choose sincerity instead.

Anxiety sucks.
Sometimes I think I’ve mastered it. I’ve conquered the bastard and it’s never coming back.

Then I wake up the next day and it’s snuck back in my heart.

Somewhere along the way… I read that anxiety is what happens when you feel like you’re not living your biggest purpose. When you feel like your creativity is stuck. Or when you feel your gifts are waaaay under-utilized.

One of the only ways I know to move through anxiety is to take what I call ‘inspired-action’.

But what does that mean?

It means…

You’ve got to:

• Risk making a fool of yourself.
• Let your heart guide you.
• Risk complete and utter failure.

It’s not easy to write music.
It’s scary as hell to write ANYTHING… books, blog posts, songs.
It’s terrifying to stare at a blank canvas and shape the invisible with paint, sound, ideas, words… pretty much anything.

As an entrepreneur.. you’ve got to be creative every single day.

You’re faced with an endless number of choices.

It’s that feeling of staring at an infinite number of POSSIBILITIES that sends you in search of any means to get numb.

The fear of choosing badly, making a mistake, being laughed at, or in some way letting yourself down is a very real fear.

Yesterday, I coached three clients, talked to two new ones and helped all of them through extreme anxiety around their businesses.
We broke through limiting beliefs, we planned strategy for the week and the day felt complete.

But I wasn’t done.

At 10 pm, Bam and I pulled up an unfinished song on the computer.
Now it was time for me to face my own monolithic fears.

Would anyone like it?
Is my voice awful?
Are these lyrics horrible?

The fact is… the time flew by and when I looked at the clock it was 1 am and I was wiped out with creative juices flowing through me.

I slept like a rock.

You ARE creative.
You ARE here for a reason.
You ARE meant to share your deepest self with us.

Yeah, anxiety sucks. But so does leaving your dreams undone.

The magic happens in the process. 

So I hereby give you permission to step through the anxiety and live bigger and bolder today than you did yesterday.

You have permission to release the diamonds in you and let them shine.
