Hello Sherman Community –

We want to thank everyone for a fantastic year and hope that you all have a relaxing and restful summer vacation. To those families who are leaving the Sherman community this year, we wish you all the best and look forward to seeing you all soon!

For those that may have missed the last PTA Meeting, we outlined some of our new fundraising and event plans for next year, some of which we are starting to experiment with at this weekend’s Union Street Fair. We’re still in need of a bit of help so please take a look at what is planned and see if you can help…

—> HELP NEEDED THIS WEEKEND

The PTA is exploring a couple new fundraising opportunities–renting parking space on weekends during Union Street and related events and selling raffle tickets at the events themselves. Examples include: Union Street Fairs, Fleet Week, Union Christmas festival etc.

—> PARKING LOT ATTENDANTS @ SHERMAN

The Union Street Fair is June 2-3 from 10 am to 6 pm (http://www.unionstreetfestival.com/), though the lot would be open from 8 am to 7 pm Saturday and Sunday. We plan to rent out our 2 parking lots as a test case. First we need a few more volunteers. Would you be interested in helping get the parking lot program rolling? There is a sign up sheet on Sharknet: Sharknet.shermanschool.org/sherman/wiki.cgi/ParkingCommittee

You may bring family members to the festival and have kids etc in the garden while attending the lot. The school will be closed. There is no valet parking; owners park their own cars. There would be no in and out. Fees are $20. We plan to take cash and use Squares with iPhones and Androids. After sign ups, I’ll send more detailed instructions. Thank you for helping Sherman! —> RAFFLE @ UNION STREET FAIR

We are looking or an alternative to our traditional raffle that allows for fundraising outside the Sherman community. At the Union Street Fair we will also be selling raffle tickets while offering waters to passersby. This is yet another experiment that we hope could turn into a wonderful fundraising opportunity.

We have 4 lead shifts this weekend so that we can have two tables going. The leads will be on hand to supervise the children selling the tickets. We also need some Sherman Shark students to be available to help sell tickets.

School Supply Lists: Grade-level supply lists were sent home with your child during the last week of school or at the Kindergarten Orientation. Reference your child’s list throughout the summer to take advantage of summer and back-to-school sales.

Sherman Afterschool Classes for Fall 2012: Class descriptions and registration form on SharkNet’s GLO page at http://sharknet.shermanschool.org/sherman/wiki.cgi/GloPage . Afterschool classes at Sherman are from 1:50 to 3:00 PM. Registration forms with payments are due to GLO by 8/29/12. Please join us for our annual Garden Party. We’ll have food, poetry readings, the Trashion Show, and music. And we’ll be honoring Linda Myers for her amazing contributions to the garden program.

GLO is starting to make costumes for the Trashion Show. All families are welcome to come to our costume-making sessions on Fridays in room 300 but any non-GLO students must be accompanied by an adult. You may also make costumes at home and participate on May 12th. AND we will even have recycled hat making on the day of so that you can make last minute costumes and still walk down the runway.

We also wanted to ask if you had any of the following materials lying around, or if you could collect them in the upcoming weeks, we would LOVE to use them for the Trashion Show.

—> HAPPENING THIS WEEK

- Apr 17: Walk to School Wednesday / Klean Kanteen Bottles are Here

Sherman Shark Klean Kanteen bottles have arrived! We will be distributing them on Wednesday via the kids’ backpacks, so if you per-ordered keep your eyes out for bottles on Wednesday.

If you did not pre-order they will be for sale on Wednesday morning at assembly and at future Sherman events (Kids bottles $15, adult thermal bottles $20). We’ll also be selling “cafe caps” for the adult bottles which make it easier to drink from the bottle while on the go ($4 per cap, $5.99 on Amazon). Teacher appreciation week is coming up and these bottles would make great gifts for our hard-working teachers (at the pre-order price of $17).

Also, a reminder that Wednesday is Walk to School Wednesday. Treats and stickers for all walkers (including students who park a few blocks away and walk).

- Apr 21: PLAYWORKS Run 4 Recess

Please remember that the Playworks Run 4 Recess event is happening THIS SATURDAY, 21 April around Stow Lake in Golden Gate Park. We have already surpassed the amount of Sherman runners from last year, but I’m still looking for more of you to participate. You can choose to do the 5K, the 1 Mile Fun Run (great for kids), or buy a family pack. I will have additional forms in the office. Please return all forms to Ms. Agnes by Friday, 20 April.

—> CONGRATS

On Thursday March 29th, Sherman was among nine public elementary schools in San Francisco that received the 2012 California Distinguished Schools designation!

The 387 schools were recognized for innovative programs helping to close the achievement gap between the test scores of black and Hispanic students and their white and Asian peers.

- Apr 21: PLAYWORKS Run 4 Recess

The PLAYWORKS Run 4 Recess event is less than two weeks away.

We are still trying to reach the goal of having at least 50 Sherman runners, so if you haven’t signed up yet – do it! Last year’s run was a huge success, and this year’s is shaping up to be even bigger. Remember, you can sign up for the 5K around Stow Lake for $25 per entry, or the 1 mile Fun Run for $15 per. Additionally, your family can get a group pack for $60. Playworks will provide some games and activities for kids who attend but are not running.

- Feb 24: Black History Month “Greeter” and “Readers”

Please join in celebration of African American writers and illustrators and inspire a love for reading as we welcome volunteer readers to Sherman. “The Great African American Read In,” in recognition of Black History Month, is sponsored by Second District PTA, SF EdFund, SFUSD, Citizen Hope, SF Noir and New Vision Works.

What we NEED: one parent volunteer to GREET other volunteer readers arriving to Sherman at 7:50am on Friday morning, direct them where to sign-in, where the classroom they will read to is, and to generally be helpful!

Sherman parents are also welcome to be READERS on this day. Please email your name and contact info to Michelle Parker michdparker@gmail.com as soon as you can.

- Feb 26: Family Garden Day, 10AM-2PM

Any amount of time you can give this Sunday to help with the maintenance needs in the garden is greatly appreciated. You do not need to be there at 10am or stay until 2pm. You can come at any time and leave when you need to. Just remember to pack up the family, a picnic lunch and grab your hat, sunscreen and garden gloves and join us in the garden for a fun-filled day of helping our school and building community. - Mar 2: Family Science and Movie Night

Thanks to Mark Bunger for pulling together a star-studded line-up of volunteer scientists (including one of our very own Sherman Kinder Dad’s Piotr Stanczyk.) Science event starts at 4:30 followed by the movie “Tangled” at 6:00 pm. Volunteers are needed for the science and movie portions of the evening, so please contact Mark Bunger (mark@bunger.org) or Tatjana Eggert-Reich (ter@jutils.com), respectively.

- Apr/May: Get ready to RUN and have some FUN!

Two runs this year will benefit Sherman: Playworks’ Run for Recess and Sherman Shark Fun Run!

”Run for Recess” is Sat, 4/21 and takes place around Stowe Lake. Fees are $25/person for the 5K, or $15/person for the fun run. The best part of this fundraiser is that 100% of REGISTRATION FEE FROM SHERMAN FAMILIES GOES DIRECTLY TO SHERMAN SCHOOL! In order for this to happen, runners must fill out a hard copy of the registration and return it with their check or money to Ms. Agnes in the office. Our goal this year is AT LEAST 50 runners. - Creative Arts Charter School is asking for donations after their school suffered extensive water and smoke damage during a fire on Dec. 22, 2011. As a result, the school lost 6 classrooms including the school’s art studio, cafeteria and library. Additionally they lost computers, sports equipment, games, art supplies and office supplies. Auction Donations. This week, we crossed the $105k mark for donations and just have $20k to go… A huge thanks for all the final pushes to secure auction items and coordinate count me ins!

We’ll still accept remaining donations next week, but they cannot be guaranteed to get into the catalog. The PTA would like to once again congratulate Principal Shenkan-Rich and her husband on the arrival of their beautiful little girl, Isabel (Izzie) Melanie Rich. Izzie was born on January 20^th at 11:34am, weighing 6 pounds 13.5 ounces and measuring 19.5 inches in length.

By now you should have received both a Save the Date card and procurement information packet for Sherman’s 7^th Annual Auction. In addition to marking your calendars, we hope you’ll take some time to consider how you can help secure donations for our Auction.

The BAD news is that we are a week away from our procurement deadline and still have some serious procuring to do. To date, our fantastic Procurement Team has secured over $50k in donations, HOWEVER we estimate that we need to secure approx. $125k to yield what we need from the event!

The target arrival time is 9:40 when snacking and stickers will begin. We’ll walk rain or shine (or fog) unless it’s REALLY raining. - The Bay Area Environmental Education Resource Fair – BAEER Fair 35

Conference on Engaging Youth In the Environment

Saturday, January 21, 2012, 10:00 am – 4:30 pm

Marin Center Exhibit Hall, San Rafael

The BAEER Fair promotes environmental education and the resources available to teachers and the general public throughout the Bay Area. The event is designed to provide learning and networking opportunities for teachers, community educators, students, families, and all concerned about the environment we share. The BAEER Fair features 75 exhibitors and 16 workshops and is a special project of the Lawrence Hall of Science. Linda Myers will be giving one of the workshop presentations “Garden Speak: K – 5 Language and Lessons in the Garden” at 3PM. Open a window into the world of garden education, its ever-increasing role in the fabric of experiential education and its challenge to the world’s urban kids to care for, learn from, and respect their natural environment. Using innovative crossing of CA curriculum standards inside the garden gate, we will engage in role-play activities, nature poetry writing and observation. Families are invited to attend. General Admission is $12, Youth is $8 and Children under 6 are free! Please come on down and support our wonderful Garden Educator and our Sherman Garden Education program!

- Lice Police! Sherman’s Lice Detective Team checked about half the school this past Thursday and will continue check of the remaining classrooms on Monday, January 9. Several cases of lice were discovered, and affected classrooms were notified. Please remember to check your child’s head regularly and to alert the office if you have a confirmed case. We can always use more Detectives– please contact Melissa (melissa.mountain@gmail.com) to join the Lice Detective team.

- Are you a NERT? (Neighborhood Emergency Response Team) FREE training in disaster and emergency preparedness skills will be offered to the Sherman and extended Marina community. Location: Sherman Elementary! Wednesdays from 6:30pm – 9:30pm on Feb 29, March 7, 14, 21,(no class 3/28), Apr 4, 11 2012). For more info: http://www.sf-fire.org/index.aspx?page=879. - Plan ahead!

Sherman will be the host location for an SFUSD childcare option during the April 6, 2012 Furlough Day.

SFUSD has announced the first day of instruction for the 2012-13 school year: Monday, August 20

- GLO Afterschool Classes. Afterschool classes coordinated by GLO (2-3pm) has posted flier describing the classes and the enrollment form available on SharkNet. - Dec 13: Author Kathryn Otoshi’s visits Sherman

We’re so lucky to have Author of our Sherman Books of the Month “One” & “Zero” visit our school this Tuesday. She will be presenting her new book “Simon and the Sock Monster” The schedule will be as follows:

9:30 – 10:15 K – 2

- Dec 13: Winter Extravaganza

Mark your calendars for this musical treat, starting with GLO performances at 4 PM and performances by classroom starting at approximately 6PM.

Also, Roam is donating a % of sales to Sherman starting at 2PM same day 12/13, so conveniently located a block away for dinner before or after the show!

- Dec 15: Deadline for submissions to Martin Luther King, Jr. Essay and Poster Contest

Poster Theme: Create a poster that encourages students in your school to practice equality toward others or create a poster that shows what a world without equality looks like and what a world with equality looks like. Sherman is once again participating in a holiday food drive to help families in need. Watch for bins in the hallway and bring in a can or two (or ten) to help show Sherman’s support of our extended community. Many thanks to Ms. Dobay for organizing.

- Annual Fund is UNDERWAY!!!

COLD? Donate to the Annual Fund and grab a beanie thanks to Kindergarten parents Denise and Bill Wells. These stylish beanies are available while supplies last to folks donating to the Sherman Annual Fund!

How about a nice bottle of wine for the holidays? Those who have donated to the Annual Fund will be eligible for the last wine drawing this Friday, December 16th at morning assembly, thanks to Andrea and Kevin Joe! Donate now and you’ll be entered for the drawing this Friday!

Join us for the Parent and Teacher Potluck Social on January 7, 2012 at 6pm at the home of Holly Carver and Kris Van Giesen. Come relax and mingle with Sherman parents and teachers and celebrate the New Year. More details to come. Please RSVP with Pam Low at lowpamela@gmail.com. Please bring a dish and beverage of your choice to share. Sign ups for food and drinks will be posted on Sharknet. Start looking for your babysitters now. Holly and Kris live at 1322 Baker Street (between Geary and Post. There is on-street parking or you can park for free in the Kaiser lot located on the north side of Geary between Baker and Broderick.

- Jan 10: Special Screening of “Including Samuel”, 6-9PM

The Sherman community is invited to attend a FREE screening of “Including Samuel” from 6-9 PM at the Aquarium of the Bay Theater at Fisherman’s Wharf. This is a film about including people with disabilities. More details can be found at www.includingsamuel.com/about/about-the-film.aspx.

- Report Cards

Report cards can be expected January 16th. Report cards will not be received before Winter Break this year. Teachers will be completing reading level assessments upon return from break, and would like to include this information in the next round of report cards.

- A friendly request from Sherman’s Green Team: If your classroom is hosting a holiday party this week, please help your teacher to separate waste into compost, recyclables, and landfill. Three separate bags and a trip to the Garden’s waste area is all it takes! And don’t forget to help out teachers and our children’s health by limiting the amount of sugar (example: avoid juice boxes which also add to landfill). Happy Holidays!

- PTA Board Member Changes. The Board would like to welcome Gaylen Kimbell who has been confirmed as Parliamentarian to start January 2012. Current PTA Board Parliamentarian, Leila Langlois, is heading to London with her family and we would like to say thank you for all she and her family has done for Sherman to date! We look forward to seeing them back soon!

- Miss the Teacher’s College Parent Training last week? - Drop-off area extended! The SF Municipal Transportation Agency approved the request for extension of our Union St passenger loading zone by three parking spaces to the west during pick-up and drop-off hours. This will aid in improving the traffic flow during drop-off and pick-up hours and the safety of our students. Many thanks to Sherman parents Nina Paolucci, Nancy Kirshner-Rodriguez, Leiasa Beckham, Melissa Mountain and to Principal Shenkan-Rich for making this a reality.

- Before you buy your child a new winter coat, check for their old one in Sherman’s LOST AND FOUND. The items in the Lost & Found are multiplying at an alarming rate. There are jackets galore, as well as hats, a few pair of pants, headbands, plastic lunch containers, lunch bags and likely a few other odds and ends. We would like to get as much as we can claimed and back with their rightful owners! If you have not labeled your children’s clothing, backpacks, lunch bags, shirts and pants, please do not forget to do so.
