This is kind of odd and possibly a bug in Gmail (even though it’s no longer in beta).

I received this message asking me to confirm the addition of an email address to a Yahoo! account. After confirming that I was not being phished, I visited the link. The account was for wa*******

I assume this is someone named Shawna Way and that her Yahoo! account may be named wayshawna or something that starts with “way” from the screenshot, so I wrote shawna.way@gmail.com explaining what I think may be happening and, if I’m right, there is a bug in the way Gmail is handling user names with a “.”

Here’s the scoop:

I set up the gmail address “shawnaway@gmail.com” a while back (like “Shawn is away”) and I don’t even use it anymore.

It looks like you have created a similar gmail address for your name, which I presume is Shawna?

The way gmail handles these addresses is that a period or dot is basically invisible. For instance, you could email me at shawn.honnick@gmail.com or at shawnhonnick@gmail.com and in fact, the dot could be placed anywhere in my name. Because of this, “shawn.way” is the same as “shawnaway”

So, unless you made a typo (in which case you won’t even see this message), something is going a little wrong at Gmail even though they are now out of beta ;-)

Please let me know if you see this message or have questions.

I actually just tested what I assumed to be true (and it used to be true) by removing the “.” from one of my own Gmail addresses. It didn’t work!

Does anyone else recall that you could use or omit the “.” in gmail addresses?
