I have been trying to replicate the interior light functions of some of the newer cars for some time now. I like how they stay on after the door is closed and then fade away. This is also called theater lighting.

This circuit is based around the ever usefull 555 timer, and an N channel MOSFET.

I am building this for my 1969 Chevelle. Dakota Digital has something similar, but I didn’t want to spend $200 on it. I am working on replicating the retained accessory power too.

Here is the circuit on a prototyping breadboard.

The capacitor (C2) & resistor (R4) connected to pins 6 & 7 on the 555 timer controls how long the output on pin 3 is high. A larger capacitor or more resistance will give you more time.

The fade effect comes from capacitor (C1) and resistor (R1), which pulls the voltage down slowly.

Lowes Home Improvement sells a 48″ by 32″ tile board for $10 that makes a good dry erase board. A dry erase board the same size from Staples costs around $40. Lowes also sells the same material in a 4′ by 8′ sheet, which I will eventually deck out my entire kitchen with.

Here is a picture of the dry erase board in use, forgive my sloppy hand writing.

I put the new Windows 7 Pro on my work laptop today (Dell Latitude E 5500), and was very impressed in how well it works. The laptop seems more responsive than it did with Windows XP.

I have been using Windows 7 RC1 on my home computer for about 3 months now, and it has been pretty solid. I will continue to use it until the RC runs out June 2010.

My favorite feature is the Windows XP mode, where I can install older programs that won’t work with Windows 7. Cool thing is that after you install a program to the virtual pc, it shows up on the Windows 7 side as well.

After I got them installed, I took a little test drive. The truck did perform a little better, had better throttle response. Of course the other plugs were worn out, I will never put Bosch plugs in a Toyota again, they didn’t last even 30k miles.

Only time will tell if they actually make a difference in fuel economy.

Today I fixed my Parents’ RCA TV. It has a problem that a lot of RCA TVs have in this model line. The Horizontal Output Transistor goes out and the TV will not power on. Instead it just makes a high pitched sound and clicks (that is the flyback trying to start).

Here is the Horizontal Output Transistor. If it is bad, it will check shorted between all three pins (that’s 0 Ohms resistance). I got this part from a local parts supplier for around $9.

This is the high voltage board from the TV. Notice I said “HIGH VOLTAGE”, be very careful playing with this board, especially the capacitors (left in the picture) and the flyback (right in the picture). And of course you never want to work on the TV while plugged up to power.

The part we are after is attached to the big heat sink (the one at the bottom of the picture). It is easier to remove the solder from the three pins while the transistor is still attached to the heat sink. I use solder wick, but you could use a De-soldering pump. Wick is easier for me.

Here I have highlighted the three pins of the transistor that have to be de-soldered. You can also check the transistor here. If all three pins are not shorted to each other, your problem may be somewhere else.

Here is the disclaimer: this seems to be a temporarily permanent fix. I have replaced this transistor 3 times now, about once a year, so there is still something in there that is not playing nice with the Horizontal Output Transistor. But, $9 a year is still better than $1000 for a new TV, especially since this TV still has a very good picture.

Here is a little tutorial on how to block a program with Group Policy, and the program’s hash.

Start by either editing an existing GPO on AD, or create a new GPO. You can also do this stand alone using gpedit.msc on any Windows XP machine.

Drill down to Software Restriction Policies. It depends on where you create the GPO as to which configuration you put this under. If the GPO resides in a User OU, then it needs to go under “User Configuration”. Likewise, if it is in a computer OU, then you need to go the the “Computer Configuration”.

After you determine which configuration is best for you, right click “Software Restriction Policies” and click “Create New Polices”. For you stand-alone non AD guys, if you want to block a certain user from accessing a program, you can log in as them and put these settings under the “User Configuration”.

You should now have some new folders under “Software Restriction Policies” called “Security Levels” and “Additional Rules”. Under “Security Levels” are the default restrictions. If you want total control over what programs are ran, then you can make the “Disallowed” the default level — but that’s another post.

For now we will focus on “Additional Rules”. Right click in the “Additional Rules” folder and click “New Hash Rule”.

This will bring up the “New Hash Rule” box, where you just need to browse for the program in question. I chose Internet Explorer — since I hardly ever use it any way. It should automatically fill in the Hash value for the software, and also the file information. Then you can choose the security level, which in this case would be “Disallowed”. You may also put in a description if you wish.

After you click “OK”, here is the result when trying to run Internet Explorer, or any program of your choosing.
