Paul Thurrott’s Curiously Shifting Thoughts on Copy-and-Paste

Delightful catch by Chris Grande. Here’s Paul Thurrott in July 2007, regarding the iPhone:

And what’s up with the lack of cut/copy and paste? This is a basic OS feature that Apple included in the first Mac OS almost 25 years ago. It’s inexplicably missing from the iPhone, unavailable in any application or the wider system itself. Unreal.

And here’s Paul Thurrott two days ago, in a post titled “I Love Windows Phone”:

The multitasking is limited. Users will only be able to get apps from the Marketplace, and not from third parties. Gasp! Is it true that there’s no copy and paste?

No matter. Windows Phone combines those very few things that were right about Windows Mobile — primarily some business functionality — with a much wider set of new functionality that is exciting in both scope and possibility.

Unreal, indeed.

Character Flaws

A few weeks ago, I had a conversation online with a guy named Sam about including mechanics for character flaws in 4th Edition D&D. He had played several other systems that included character flaws, like GURPS and World of Darkness, and wanted to include the idea in his 4E game. His “mechanic” at the time was that his character has a short temper and throws away his weapon on any attack roll resulting in a natural 1. As you can guess, this didn’t go over entirely well with the rest of his group and he wanted advice on how to make it work. Several other people involved in the conversation took the long way around telling him not to do it and just roleplay the temper in non-mechanical ways that wouldn’t affect the overall efficiency of the group. I wholeheartedly disagreed. I sent him this message, which I now offer to you all as an option to mechanically deal with character flaws in a way that is both compelling (pardon the upcoming pun) and appropriate for the game.

Dear Sam,

Don’t listen to Scott and Jared. You can absolutely have a mechanic for character flaws in 4th Edition D&D – your only problem is that you’re trying to lead with the stick, not the carrot. Let’s hop off the WotC train for just a moment, and go peek at the Dresden Files RPG for a second. There’s a mechanic in that game called a Compel. A Compel is a weak spot in your character. It doesn’t necessarily need to be a character trait, it just needs to be some handle your DM can tempt you with or jerk you around by. A short temper, rampant curiosity or even an easily kidnapped family member all make good Compels. If you follow a Compel, thus getting you and your group into a little more trouble, you get a Fate point which is used to modify die rolls and stuff. Without getting into specifics, the game is written such that you may need a couple more Fate points than what you’re normally allotted for the main story. The Compels, then, provide a personal risk/reward option for you to get that extra help, though possibly at a cost.

This is the concept I think you want to model for D&D. Your character’s flaw should be something you turn to when the chips are down in a sort of Faustian bargain, not a mechanic that does nothing but get in your way. So you seem to want to play a character with anger issues and you like the idea of throwing away your weapon mid-combat. Alright. Sit down with your DM and propose this idea: if you throw away your weapon as part of taking your second wind, you can spend two healing surges. You’re lowering your damage output and burning through your surges faster, so it’s a risk, but you are getting the immediate healing you need and so your party has some time to mechanically to deal with your decision – it’s not just a hosing. Your character flaw is not only a resource management option now, but it’s also probably not going to tick off your fellow players. Heck, they may even encourage you to do it! Your flaw contributes to both your character and the game rather than detracting from it. If you don’t like that option, then maybe throwing your main weapon away on a roll of 1 causes your secondary weapon to gain the high crit property. I don’t like that one as much, but it’s a thought.

If you like that idea, here’s a few more character flaws you might like to attribute to your character. I would strongly advise against having more than one, though.

Delusion of Invincibility

If you spend an Action Point when at least 5 squares away from your nearest ally, you gain a +2 bonus to your next d20 roll. You also gain vulnerable 5 all until the start of your next turn.

Lecherousness

(Daily) You gain a +2 bonus to your next Diplomacy or Bluff check against one NPC to whom you could be attracted. If you fail the check, you also lose a healing surge.

Butterfingers

(Daily) Trigger: You miss with a Daily power that carries the Weapon keyword and is not Reliable. Effect: Your weapon is Pushed 3 squares in a random direction. You regain use of that power at the end of the encounter.

Masochist

You take a permanent -2 to Diplomacy. Whenever you deal damage to yourself, you gain temporary HP equal to your Con modifier.

Chris Ziegler:

Microsoft just mentioned in a Q&A session here at MIX10 in no uncertain terms that clipboard operations won’t be supported on Windows Phone 7 Series.

Catching up is hard. And based on what I’m hearing about iPhone OS 4.0, it seems likely that Windows Phone 7 is going to fall further behind before it even gets a chance to ship.

Nick Wingfield, reporting for the WSJ:

Nearly 10,000 iPhone users were accessing the Microsoft employee email system last year, say two people who heard the estimates from senior Microsoft executives. That figure equals about 10% of the company’s global work force.

Employees at Apple, in contrast, appear to be more devoted to the company’s own mobile phone. Several people who work at the company or deal regularly with employees there say they can’t recall seeing Apple workers with mobile phones other than the iPhone in recent memory. […]

One Microsoft worker said he knows several colleagues who try to disguise their iPhones with cases that make them look more like generic handsets. “Maybe once a year I’m in a meeting with Steve Ballmer,” said this employee. “It doesn’t matter who’s calling, I’m not answering my phone.”

It’s a schadenfreude-alicious nugget of information, sure. But it’s a telling indication of just how strong the iPhone is versus Windows Mobile.
New data released from analytics service Hitwise today names Facebook the largest website in the U.S. with 7.07% of all U.S. visits. Google is second at 7.03%. Yahoo Mail is third with 3.8% and Yahoo is fourth at 3.67% (if you combined both Yahoo properties, and I’m not sure why they don’t, Yahoo would be first). YouTube (a Google property) is fifst with 2.14%.

This is the first time Hitwise has named Facebook the top site in the U.S. Comscore still ranks Google the top site by reach at 81% of the U.S. population. Facebook, at 53%, is still behind Google, Yahoo and Microsoft sites in the U.S., according to the most recent Comscore data from February 2010.

One of the great additions to this book, and to the 4e system in general, is the concept of “environmental powers”. These powers let players interact with their battle environment in unique ways. Examples include throwing explosive barrels of strong dwarven mead, rolling large boulders upon your foes, or firing large ballista at a dragon.

These environmental powers are an important addition to the tools available to dungeons masters. It is more than a small feature to throw in from time to time – environmental powers can keep your battles fresh and keep your players excited.

There is unfortunately very few samples of environmental powers in the DMG2. Fortunately, it is easy enough for us to make new ones. Pages 65 and 66 of the DMG2 have all the tools we need to design environmental powers of our own. Need a ballista to fire flaming bolts at the white dragon? Give it an attack of level+5 vs AC and pick out the damage from the damage-by-level chart.

Even better, these tools give you the ability to add in on-the-spot environmental powers when your players come up with something interesting you weren’t prepared for. Just make the attack score level+5 vs AC or level+3 vs any other defense and use the damage-per-level chart as your baseline for damage.

There is one major change you should make, however, that isn’t covered in the DMG2. Make these environmental powers a minor action to activate, rather than a standard action.

Shrewd players understand the economy of actions and are unlikely to seek out environmental powers unless they can do so easily. Most players will stick to what they know, their own character powers, unless you entice them by making it easy for them to experiment. Making environmental powers activate with a minor lets them try it out without wasting a standard action. You can limit it to a single activation per turn or make it a one-shot effect if its particularly powerful.

Like terrain effects, environmental powers are a wonderful way to keep your battles fresh and exciting. They give some fun new options to your players and they add a whole new variable in your design. Each time you design an encounter, consider whether and how an environmental power might add some excitement.

The Key To Gmail: Sh*t Umbrellas

Today at the Gmail Behind The Scenes panel at the SXSW festival in Austin, Texas, key team members of the Gmail team revealed the true secret of the service: Shit umbrellas.

Product manager Todd Jackson made the humorous revelation when explaining how the Gmail team works as a group of about 100 people, the vast majority of which are engineers. “You can either be a shit funnel or a shit umbrella,” Jackson says.

What he means by that is that as a product with hundreds of millions of users (and a company with thousands of employees) there’s a lot of stuff constantly being hurled at the team — as a shit umbrella, the product managers protect the engineers from getting distracted. It’s not enough to be a “shit funnel” where they would pass some of the junk down to engineers, they need to fully protect the engineers.

This sentiment was echoed by Edward Ho, who is known as “Mr. Buzz,” as he’s the one who built up the Google Buzz team (a sub-unit of the Gmail team). Ho noted his hatred for unnecessary meetings, and has made sure that when the Buzz team needs to have them, they are based around demos, not talking about things. “It’s all about what you’ve done,” Ho says.

Some other interesting notes about Gmail:

The original invites system wasn’t a marketing ploy, it was simply an engineering decision to make sure they could scale

There’s a 30-1 engineers to products managers ratio in the Gmail team — it’s certainly one of the biggest ratios at Google

The Gmail team is spread over a few offices around the world (including Zurich), it used to be more, but they consolidated to help the product.

There are “hundreds of million of users” — the third-largest email provider

In India, Gmail is the number one email provider

Gmail is growing fasters internationally than in the U.S.

Gmail is available in 53 languages

Internally, the Google Buzz team was known as “Team Taco Town” after an SNL skit

Google uses Gmail internally (obviously), switched over from Microsoft Outlook at launch (about 6 years ago)

Gmail is slow for some users mainly because they have a ton of emails saved. A fix for that is coming soon

Most of gmail is written in Java, JavaScript, C++

There are several hundred thousands lines of javascript in Gmail – one of the biggest in the world

No new feature can launch for Gmail that adds latency to the product

There is a certain class of creatures we hold to a higher standard than the others. While kobolds, orcs, and zombies are built to fall to the blades of our player characters, other monsters are built for a different purpose: to terrify. Beholders, liches, elder dragons, demon princes; these creatures shouldn’t drop fast and they should scare the heck out of your players. When they’re done battling one, they should be bloody and they should be scared of ever facing one again.

There are few monsters of this variety more terrifying than the mind flayer. When your party sees one, they should grip their swords tighter and their hapless banter should cease. When they’re battling them, they should wonder how they ever fell into such a situation. When they’re done, they should have nightmares of ever facing one again.

At least that’s the goal.

At level 14 and with 107 hit points, a standard Mind Flayer Infiltrator isn’t likely to scare your party very much. This mind flayer will die pretty fast if you’re not careful. Today we’re going to make sure that doesn’t happen. Today we’re going to pimp that mind flayer into a beast worth of the fear of your party.

Before we begin, it’s important to understand how best to use the stock mind flayer. While its defenses are relatively low, it has one power, “Stalk the Senseless”, that requires study. This power makes the mind flayer invisible to any dazed target. This means +5 defenses. This means no opportunity attacks. While the mind flayer can still be marked by your tanks, those tanks will hit a lot less often with that +5 defense assuming the marking tank is dazed.

Keeping PCs dazed is the key, so rule 1 for pimping your mind flayer is to group him with other dazing monsters. The easiest way to do this is to group him with other mind flayers. This serves two purposes. First, one mind flayer gains the advantages of the other. If one dazes folks with a Mind Blast, the other gains the “Stalk the Senseless” ability against those dazed targets. Second, this spreads your party’s attacks across multiple Mind Flayers. If you have only one of these tentacled creatures out on the battlefield, he’s going to be a lightning rod for attacks and die very quickly. Two, three, or even four mind flayers makes it a lot harder to control or kill them all.

You can also group a mind flayer up with an Umber Hulk, something I discussed in my Monster Optimization: Mind Flayers + Umber Hulks article.

In general, keep an eye out for dazing creatures that stack well with mind flayers.

If you’re planning to use a mind flayer as a boss creature, a great idea for a high-heroic boss fight, you’re going to need a bit more. Let’s pimp this mind flayer.

We start by bumping up a mind flayer infiltrator to an elite, upping hit points, adding +2 to saving throws, and giving him an action point. As we learned in the DMG2, we don’t bump defenses anymore.

We’re going to turn this mind flayer into a mind flayer assassin, giving him a +2d6 sneak attack bonus. This fits in well with the daze effects he’s likely to inflict upon the PCs. We’re also going to add a feedback aura. When the mind flayer assassin becomes bloodied, he will gain an an aura 5 that inflicts 5 psychic damage when a creature begins or enters the aura. This represents the mind flayer’s loss of psychic control as he begins to fall. We’re going to up the recharge of his Mind Blast to 4,5,6 so he can use it more often. Lastly, we’ll give him a nice double attack that lets him perform two tentacle attacks upon a single target as a standard action. Finally, to help him escape from a tight spot, we’ll give him a shift 5 move action he can use to break away from pesky marking fighters.

Let’s take a look at how this turns out:

In your powerhouse encounter, you’ll want to group our new mind flayer assassin with a couple of regular mind flayer infiltrators to stack up those Mind Blasts. You might also want to throw in some Drow Spiderguard thralls that capitalize off of daze attacks with combat advantage bonuses of +2d6.

This is going to be a very tough battle, so be careful. You’ll want to be careful with all of the mind blasts by avoiding dazing the same player over and over. They’ll get bored and frustrated quickly.

In the end, you’ll have the goal we set out to meet – a mind flayer that will be well remembered by your party and well feared should they ever face another one again.

There is a certain class of creatures we hold to a higher standard than the others. While kobolds, orcs, and zombies are built to fall to the blades of our player characters, other monsters are built for a different purpose: to terrify. Beholders, liches, elder dragons, demon princes; these creatures shouldn't drop fast and they should scare the heck out of your players. When they're done battling one, they should be bloody and they should be scared of ever facing one again.

#dnd tip: Have a spymaster NPC on your PC’s side that delivers them dossiers on key villains. Helps your players keep track.

#dnd tip: Be careful of monsters with stun effects. Players hate to miss an entire round of combat. Consider bonus damage, weaken, or daze.

@IllusiveDreams The Container Store has plastic shoeboxes good for storing minis if you don’t mind them getting a little banged up. #dnd

#dnd tip: Make it easy for players to flank opponents when not using a battle map so they don’t feel cheated and want the grid back.

#dnd tip: Hitchcock movies make great seeds for adventures. Check out The Birds, Notorious, Man Who Knew Too Much, and Rear Window.

#dnd tip: Encourage the use of ad-hoc terrain powers by using DMG p. 42 high-limited damage and only requiring a minor action to use.

#dnd tip: When running in a set gameworld, make sure that world’s key differentiators are often seen.

#dnd tip: Be specific when roleplaying. Write down key notes for any NPC you're going to step into. Goals and attitudes are key.

Great #dnd tips from @davethegame on the 5x5 method. I started using this for my campaign and I love it: http://bit.ly/c2Ekgm

#dnd tip: Give surprise rounds as rewards for successful skill challenges. Give them to monsters on failures.

#dnd question to ponder. Where do YOU spend your limited creative energy? Is it in the right place? Will it have the highest impact?

The standout speaker so far has been hi5 President and CTO Alex St. John, who has not pulled any punches in his criticisms of Facebook and other companies. Moments ago, he just attacked Zynga, calling its games mediocre and saying that its success stemmed from spamming users.

Here’s what he said (paraphrased): “Zynga makes mediocre games. What Zynga discovered is that Facebook had left an opening for spam. They acquired a lot of audience from a security loophole that Facebook has since closed. And they aren’t social. Their only social game is Poker — it’s the only one that you can chat in. All subsquent games are turn based and spread over days.”

The audience’s response? A round of clapping.

Earlier in the panel, St. John said that Facebook was somewhat schizophrenic, offering users both more professional features and gaming. Of course, hi5 is now a dedicated gaming platform, so he isn’t exactly an unbiased observer.

The first episode runs just under 6 minutes, and features Phil Menard, The Chatty DM as my guest. We help out a DM who asked about perception checks, and we talk about our upcoming podcast, “The Dungeon Master Guys”, which will be co-hosted by Dave Chalker (critical-hits.com) as well.

A couple of notes on my minicast. I hate my voice, I truly do, it irritates me. Also, I don’t own a recording studio. So if your complaints are quality/production related, I am a professional television producer when I’m not blogging, so chances are I’ve noticed what you’ve noticed and it probably irks me too. So it is what it is. And yes I have an accent. It’s called Miami Cuban-American. We don’t think we have it down here, or we like to pretend we don’t, but we all do.

And about the length, it’s not meant to be a full fledged long show. It’s quick, short, and to the point. Here’s the feed, which you can add to itunes. I hope you guys enjoy it.

Technologizer: The Future of Windows

David Worthington:

Technologizer asked some of the industry’s big brains about what Microsoft needs to do to keep its operating system relevant in the years to come. Their advice ranges from merely simplifying the interface to borrowing ideas from other Microsoft products such as the Xbox to giving the OS a complete reboot. Here’s what they (and we) have to say.

Some interesting (and widely varying) answers. I like Scott Rosenberg’s take best:

Microsoft ought to build a new, modern, stripped-down OS and support the legacy stuff in a virtual machine. Call the new environment WIN instead of WINDOWS, suggesting a new stripped-down nimbleness. Make it clear that the old world will be supported for a long time but not forever. Dazzle people with what they can do in a new world.

Or just maintain Windows in parallel. Point is, there’s no reason why Microsoft should have one and only one PC desktop operating system. Why not two: the new cool no-cruft one; and Windows, the established, familiar, chock-full-of-baggage-and-legacy-compatibility one.

Google’s Chief Economist: “Newspapers Have Never Made Much Money From News”

Earlier today, Google chief economist Hal Varian gave a presentation to an FTC workshop on the changing economics of the newspaper industry. We all know that newspaper ad revenues have been falling off a cliff for years. Many media companies blame Google and are trying to put the genie back in the bottle with partial metered models for online news.

Google is understandably on the defensive, trotting out Varian to paint an unemotional picture with as much data as he can muster. But the picture he paints is a dour one for print media. For instance, the chart above shows the decline of overall newspaper ad revenues. Newspapers have taken huge hits in classifieds advertising (in blue) and national brand advertising (in red). The online portion (green) is still too small to make much of a difference.

The collapse in print ad revenues is coming from two places: the overall ad recession of the past couple years and the shift to online news consumption. Here are some telling stats from Varian’s presentation, which is also embedded below:

About 40% of internet users say read news on the Web every day.

Time spent on online news sites is only about 70 seconds per day, compared to 25 minutes spent reading a print edition.

Online news readers tend to read at work, not for leisure, so they don’t have much time to stick around and are thus worth less to advertisers.

Overall, less than 5 percent of newspaper ad revenues come from the online editions.

Search engines account for 35 to 40 percent of “traffic to major U.S. news sites,” according to comScore.

The cost of printing and distributing print editions, makes up about half the cost, while editorial operations only make up 15 percent.

Varian concludes: “Newspapers could save a lot of money if the primary access to news was via the internet.” It sounds like he agrees with Netscape founder and investor Marc Andreessen, who recommends that newspapers “burn the boats” carrying their dying print businesses.

“The fact of the matter is that newspapers have never made much money from news,” says Varian. They make money from “special interest sections on topics such as Automotive, Travel, Home & Garden, Food & Drink,, and so on.” The problem is that on the Web, other niche sites which cater to those categories are a click away, leaving the newspapers with sections which are harder to sell ads against, such as sports, news, and local.

So what are they supposed to do? He doesn’t really have a good answer, but ignoring the realities of consumer shifts in reading behavior and news consumption is not it.

View this document on Scribd
