"Rockstar 201" is a mashup of Rihanna's "Rockstar 101" and Drake's "Over" performed by singer-songwriter Shea Rose. The song is featured on Shea's mixtape album "Little Warrior" (produced by wiidope) and the music video features rapper M.A.G and guitarist Maro Chon.

On "Rockstar 201", Shea performs over the original track produced for Rihanna by Terius "The-Dream" Nash and Christopher "Tricky" Stewart adding her own vocal style and interpretation of the hook ("Oh baby I'm a Rockstar") while responding to and reinterpreting Drake's verses from his hit single "Over".

"Drake is a talented songwriter and I loved his refreshing perspective on the trendy topic of 'My Rise to Stardom', so I challenged myself to step inside of his process and write from a female perspective while chronicling my own experiences in the music industry."

The idea for the "Rockstar 201" music video came about when M.A.G. reached out to Shea via Twitter letting her know that he too had written verses over the instrumental to Rihanna's "Rockstar 101". The two decided it would be a great collaboration and called in a band, friends and music video directors Dre Edmonds and Ernesto Galan to shoot the music video.

Props to drumstress Ya'el Biz for passing down such an appropriate moniker to describe, not just my diminutive stature, but also the way in which I've approached my musical journey and my life as whole. I take it on, head first, an Aries, A Ram, in full armor - Little Warrior!!!

Ya'el and I have never met in person. This dude responded to a craigslist ad I posted, promoting a show I was doing or something. I forget exactly. He wrote, "Look up Yael, here's the link to her website: http://www.drumaddict.net/"

Immediately, I checked her website. Something about the tone of dude's one line email spoke to me. I listened to Ya'el's music, her mission, checked her videos and photos and I quickly found her email or facebook account...I can't remember which exactly. After a few correspondences and exchanges about my music and her music, we knew there was a soul sister connection.

Now, this I do remember like it was yesterday...one of the last email correspondences she and I had until recently. At the time I received her last email I was dealing with some personal battles about myself, my relationships with friends, men, my talent or lack there of and, "What in the hell was I doing with my life!" Although I had not shared anything about my doubts, fears and struggles with Ya'el, her email was very powerful and she said things that really hit home. I mean it wasn't an overwhelming deep email, but she was strong in the way that she talked about music and how we might collaborate. Her words stood erect like soldiers ready for battle. They were also gentle like a big sister assuring a little sister that she can ride her bike without training wheels. And then, she called me "little warrior" when she signed off.

It was like our email exchanges had been part of a rites of passage ceremony and I had passed through the fire and now I was given a mic, a sword, the armor and the permission to come out of me and stop living in fear of me and censoring myself all the damn time.

I AM LITTLE WARRIOR

YES! Little Warrior resonated throughout my body, mind and spirit. Just like that, everything that I'd been through in my life, personal struggles, trials and tribulations, doubts, lies, good times and bad times and trying to "do this music" made sense in two words: Little Warrior

THE MIXTAPE "LITTLE WARRIOR"

After identifying with the moniker so strongly, I started thinking about ideas and concepts around my being, "Little Warrior". My mind just cracked open so wide with sonic, visual and spiritual ideas. I started researching and investigating the elements: spirit, water, fire, air and earth. I began to process and understand what a warrior must learn and master and how to use and exchange with the elements, not only as they exist in the atmosphere, but within ones own body and mind. Also how does a warrior relate to others warriors in the world - their elements, their bodies, their minds.

Communication, chemistry and respect for the elements....those are key when creating and collaborating artistically - actually just living in the world. Too, knowing your strengths and weaknesses and respecting both. Believe me, all elements were tested, boundaries pushed, pulled, broken, repaired and explored while creating the "Little Warrior" mixtape.

Before Surgery

I even went through a major vocal surgery during the process...what a humbling journey (I'll write about that in another blog...)

At times I wanted to lash out...fiery and hot. I didn't want to sing anymore. In fact sometimes it physically hurt to sing. I didn't want to be rapping either. I just needed to find a subway, a corner, even a cave and sink way down in it with me and my one hundred and fifty dollar guitar, practice a lot more and just do me...me and my guitar.

I had a hard time dealing with the truth...the fact is that all of these elements live inside of me and that its okay to healthily explore and express them all ya know. Sometimes I feel like "I'm The Sh*t" and then there are those days where I felt like sh*t!

So I would cry and drown in a pool of tears and I just wanted to be washed away by the water and baptized into a new life, a new way of looking at things and feeling life. I didn't want to know heart-break or fear or pain and I didn't want to share it in my songs. I longed for something pure. Something simple. A small piece of land with me and my garden and my one hundred and fifty dollar guitar.

All these feeling flowed through me for the ten months it took to create the music, make the videos, come up with photos and language etc. And they still do!!!

So what I do is sink my feet deep into the belly of the earth, open my mind, my heart, my soul...listen to God, then open my mouth...sing, speak, rap, express, let the words out and let the air and the winds carry it into the world. The complexity and inner workings of a warrior deep, sassy, rockin', folky, sexy, graceful, blue...

FIRE

WATER

EARTH

AIR

SPIRIT

Before auditioning to be one of two hosts for Berklee's weekly web series, "What's Happening at Berklee," I had already felt, going into my last year, like my Berklee experience had changed my life in ways I never imagined…what more could there possibly be? Two years ago I studied abroad in Athens, Greece through the college's International Programming and then I was asked to open for the one-time gathering, "Women In Rock" which elevated my academic/professional career at Berklee and beyond to another level. It’s been an honor and a blessing to study with some of the must amazing musicians in the world including faculty, staff and my fellow peers. So when I found out I was cast for the "What's Happening Berklee," web series...well it was icing on the cake. I'm happy to share this awesome opportunity with the beautifully talented Katrina Bello. So look out for us as we suggest choice concerts and events by students, faculty, alumni, and special guests on Berklee's campus and at locales around Boston and beyond.

Recording artist and singer-songwriter Shea Rose is a Boston native and seventh semester professional music major at the Berklee College of Music. Cape Cod Today writer, Andy Buckley, describes her as the female Lenny Kravitz meets Rickie Lee Jones. Rose, a vocalist who started rapping about a year ago, was recently hand picked by Queen Latifah and CoverGirl as a fresh face for the CoverGirl Queen Collection. Latifah also dubbed her as “America’s Next Female Rapper.” The ad campaign and interview are currently featured in the July issue of Essence, People, InTouch and OK Magazine. Latifah, who has been tapped to host this year’s 10th anniversary BET AWARDS show, will bring Rose and four other up and coming female rappers on the stage during the broadcast LIVE from the historic Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles on Sunday, June 27, 2010 at 8:00 P.M. on BET and via live stream on BET.com. "We need to make sure their (female artists) voices are heard," says Latifah. Latifah, herself, viewed more than 600 music videos during her search for America’s new female talent. Rose was flown to Miami for a photo shoot with celebrity photographer Peggy Sirota and recorded a remake of Queen Latifah's hit anthem U.N.I.T.Y with famed music producers Cool and Dre. Soon after the shoot in Miami, CoverGirl signed Rose to be a new face (spokesperson/ambassador) for the CoverGirl Queen Collection. “This has been a beautiful, amazing and humbling experience," says Rose. "I am so grateful that Queen Latifah understands how important it is to encourage and support young, female entrepreneurs. I'm honored that she choose me." Rose performed at the Berklee Performance Center to rave reviews last fall as the opener for Berklee's Women In Rock concert with featured guests Nona Hendryx, Siedah Garrett, and notable rock drumstress Cindy Blackman. After catching Blackman's eye, Rose collaborated on recordings with her in Naples, Italy. Rose is the student leader of “The Movement at Berklee” where she helps to facilitate music based volunteer initiatives between students, faculty and staff and Berklee partner organizations such as the Boys & Girls Club. She has recently started her own music for social change movement called, “My Angel Wears A Fro.” Rose is poised to release her debut EP entitled, “Rock’n Rose” and is performing steadily with her own band throughout New England and New York.
