pool gallery, with support from Patek Philippe, presents : “Auferstanden aus Ruinen”, with photography works by Harald Hauswald.

East German photographer Harald Hauswald’s work is exciting, insightful, and especially relevant today, as this year is the 20th anniversary of the Fall of the [Berlin] Wall.

Beginning October 16, pool gallery will be showing Harald’s photography, who not only lived through, but documented his own life in the GDR. In his time, he was an Enemy of the State, being closely followed by the Stasi as he captured their worst fears with his camera – true everyday life in the GDR.

And for the first time, Hauswald will be showing never-before-seen color photographs – in addition to the black and white photographs that is best known for. All of the exhibited photos were taken before the Wall fell.

Harald Hauswald did what no other photographer in his time succeeded in doing: he documented everyday life. While that may sound like the simplest thing to do, in East Berlin under the GDR, it was quite the opposite. The documentation of that particular everyday life was sternly forbidden, any glimpse of it lost amidst propoganda – rendering the very existence of Hauswald’s work a feat.

Intense yet distanced, the dynamic works of Hauswald serve as a detailed account of Berlin in the 70s and 80s. He didn’t stop there, however, continuing with his camera through the transformation into a reunified Germany, up to this very day.

There’s just something about Hauswald’s photographs. For one thing, the characteristic distance between camera and subject gives the distinct impression that he is watching, not participating – and hints at a subtle skepticism.

Coupled with this skepticism, however, is a certain sense of change – that which evolves, next to that which remains the same. This binary lies within so many of his photographs – a movement within a frozen moment, a truth hidden amongst many lies, a hope buried deep under many disappointments.

Harald Hauswald Biography

Hauswald, a founding member of the well-known photo agency Ostkreuz, was born in 1954 in Radebeul, a small town near Dresden.

He became an apprentice to a photographer and later, in 1976, graduated from photography school. Around that time, already under state surveillance, he made his way through the GDR, to Berlin, exploring, documenting.

His works from the late seventies through the early eighties depict the binary that was present even within Hauswald’s relationship, as a German, with the GDR; as the writer Lutz Rathenow put it, “We hated the government, but loved the people.”

But even after 1990, Hauswald, has found that even with major changes in Germany, the struggle, his subject, remains – albeit under a different name. Thus he continues to document, as he always has, turning his lens on the contradictions and pitfalls of capitalism.

Uninterested in spectacle, mesmirized by the seemingly mundane, Hauswald continues his dissection of everyday life, the little things – the things that can only be seen when one takes a moment to stop, really look, and recognize them.

The aim of the competition is to encourage creativity among the next generation of designers while supporting architectural research and the implementation of contemporary architecture projects in Greece.

On June 29th 2009, OLIAROS, a young property development company, issued a call for architects up to 35 years old to submit proposals for the design and construction of a model, affordable student housing complex in Kerameikos and Metaxourgeio (KM), an area in the historic centre of Athens, Greece.

The competition seeks to elicit designs, which explore new ideas on urbanism and rethink existing housing models for communities.

Special emphasis was requested on exploring structures that consist of separate student housing units with the capacity to acquire a viral character within the urban tissue and sprawl into neighboring empty lots.

The competition challenges participants to rethink two traditional key studies for separate housing units:
i) The domus commune, a structure consisting of smaller units with shared facilities, and
ii) The shelter, which elaborates on the idea of a structure as an amalgamation of self-sufficient units.

Participants were asked to explore new building typologies that can house 18 students on the 200 m² lot at 34 Marathonos Street in KM, and can potentially sprawl in the neighboring properties owned by third parties, aiming at creating a contemporary student housing hub.

245 proposals from 41 countries were submitted and reviewed by the Jury Committee between September 11th – 14th 2009 at OLIAROS’ premises in Athens, of which 242 complied with the competition rules.

The Jury Committee is comprised of a team of distinguished architects with diverse backgrounds, and an influential practice on contemporary architecture plus the organizer. The Jury members are: Bjarke Ingels, Andreas Kourkoulas, Marcel Meili, Iasson Tsakonas, Yoshiharu Tsukamoto, Yorgos Tzirtzilakis, and Elia Zenghelis.

The Jury Committee decided on the five finalists, which are:
