anyway I have done a quick Q & A with her…. plus at the bottom you can win a copy.

Q1) So what is cool about sheds?
Sheds have always been cool in they truly give you a chance to escape and follow your dreams. I love it too with sheds that it doesn’t matter if you want to spend a fortune or are on a tight budget you can find a way to have one that works for you.

Q2) Our sheddies were obviously a great influence on the book – what advice would you give anyone wanting to style their shed and make it unique on a budget.

I was so inspired by some of the shedblog contributors to the book and their inventiveness. Elena Thomas for instance, created a totally unique shed by covering it in decorative fabric strips, the shed is also movable and her friend Dan Whitehouse uses it as a music venue. Amazing!

I do think the best place to start is to think that your shed doesn’t necessarily have to be wooden or even an actual shed!

In the book there is a fabulous library created inside a shipping container, an art studio in an old air-raid shelter, and another lovely workspace in a converted garage, and to me.. a beach hut qualifies too.

Q3) is there one item that a sheddie should not do without in there cool shed?

Hmmmm.. I think having the simple things in life has the ability to make a space feel ‘just right’ or not. So it has to be a desk/worksurface/table and chair combo at the right height, and everything to hand.

But also, in my mind, being cool is also to do with function as well as aesthetics. There is something just cool about using that space to follow your dreams.

Look at Jon Earl for instance, last years ‘shed of the year’ winner. His ‘Songs from the shed’ is just so cool that all that fabulous acoustic music comes out of a seemingly ordinary space and that that now Jon is in part ‘living the dream’..
now that really is cool.

Q4) If you could have the ultimate shed – what would it be.

I think there is something absolutely beautiful in the little tiny sheds/ cabins in the wild.

We feature one that is in the most amazing landscape in West Virginia, that it’s owner describes as ‘glorified camping’ it’s absolutely lovely and in my dreams I’d have a little tiny, but carefully thought out beach-side shed/cabin like Le Corbusiers in the South of France, I would use it as a serious chill out place, and spend the days not doing much either in the cabin or under the shade of a tree daydreaming and looking out at the sea.

On a more practical,and nearer to home note…I find the journey from house to shed of more significant that immediately obvious, something ‘happens’ to your mind-set on that short journey.. and the destination would be a little writing/drawing shed, with good daylight, a fabulous view and a kettle. That
would suit me just fine!

Q5) What next – My Cool Pub shed, My Cool Garden office ?

Ooh those are both nice ideas..and fortunately I have one of those minds that naturally likes to have distraction, projects and it constantly come up with ideas.

I have one very big project that I would really love to share but unfortunately I’m not allowed to talk about yet but I can absolutely hand on heart say that I think all good sheddies will love it.

And I have a slightly worryingly long list of ‘my cool..’ potential subjects pinned to my office notice board.The challenge is to see that the quality of the content, photography, art-direction and writing keep the same high standard as ‘my cool caravan’ my cool campervan’ & now ‘my cool shed’. I love it that the books have been so well received and I that want to see it stays that way!

We thought long and hard about who we should get in for the auspicious 200th sesssion. We finally decided the honour should go to M.O.D which was formed by Jerry and Liz who were the first ever artists to play in the shed. It is them you can hear playing in the background on the opening title sequence and none of us had any idea where that first session was going to lead.

M.O.D play an eclectic mix of Prog Folk, Gypsy Jazz with some disco covers thrown in. Prepare for some epic songs in this session and whilst she hates me saying it Liz is one of the finest fiddle players I know.

When he first showed me I did not even know it was a shed – maybe Newport souncil don’t have any rules when it comes to tidy foliage on their allotment plots

it reminds me of the sort of shot that appears on the Luxury Shed calendar.

As readersheds started off as a UK entity, some may say Shed social networl many years ago (cough in 2001 before Facebook) – the majority of Shed are from the UK

As I don’t force people when their add the location of the shed to give as much or as little info as their feel comfortable with you will get different version of the same data – eg back garden, Back Garden etc

anyway unsurprisingly Garden or variations of that are top but a lot of sheddies don’t want to tell us , I bet they will be round their drinking their tea and dunking their biscuits.

Since we have allowed International sheddies to add their sheds to readersheds well where us Brits start they all follow there have been some great ones from the US, OZ and even France.. Michigan seems to have the most sheds shared.

Off the shelf from East Anglian Sheds in Marks Tey, but then modified for our requirements. Fully insulated and lined internally, wired for 240V and Cat 5.

Why have you got a shed? uses etc

This shed houses all the many small objects, documents and delicate objects that have been added to the Colne Valley Postal History Museum over the years by the Curator, but more importantly, by visitors and the Great British Public. They have been very generous to us and entrusted many heirlooms, mementos and family records to our care. The shed provides adequate protection for this valuable archive of material showing how country and rural communities relied on the Post Office.

How would you describe your shed?

It is a microcosm of 150 years of Post Office service to the Community.

Who are your Shed inspirations

Arthur Reeder at the Isle of Wight Postal Museum has a gorgeous shed 40ft by 15ft.!

Future Shed plans

A new bigger shed (8m x 3m), Shed the Second,  will be constructed alongside the existing one to house some of the Sorting Office and Telephone Exchange equipment that is too large to fit in Shed The First.

What do you think the most popular shed names are for those sheddies who have shared their sheds with us for Shed of the year 2012?

It wont surprise you that it’s “The Shed” with a total of 37 sheds with that exact name (ignoring case), then it’s a big gap with “Shed” then “The Beach Hut” – but it does go to prove that some sheddies think more about what goes in their unique space than the name of course the majority of you give your shed a very unique name.

Anyway here is a graph… I have excluded all the data that only has one unique shed name as that would make a massive graph so just show the popular names you lot give your sheds. I have not cleaned up the data so “shed”, “Shed” are both there.

The Sex of a sheddie

A few years back when I started to ask for the Sex of the owner of the shed so that I can get some stats on blokes and ladies sheddis. I added a term called “Bishedual” meaning both Male and Female shed owners – I don’t anymore as you can see it’s soured the stats

anyway if there are any more stats you are after then Contact me – Location is the next one – but need to clean up the data.. as so many different variations on back garden

But now it’s time for friends/family or just all those shed aficionados and sheddies to shine and cast their votes for their favourite sheds in each category.

Our simple 6′ x 8′ shed is off the shelf.

Why have you got a shed? uses etc

The Hedgehog Shed is HQ to a small group of volunteers who run Herts Hogline, which is an award winning hedgehog rescue service based in Hertfordshire. We have a blog called ‘The Hedgehog Shed‘  so supporters can keep up-to-date with our hoggie news.

It can house 12 hedgehogs comfortably in purpose built hutches (made from reclaimed timber). The interior is fully lined so it can be heated during the winter months. This allows us to over winter hedgehogs that are too small to hibernate. They are then released when spring arrives. We also have a fan for the summer to ensure the shed does not become too hot whilst the spring/summer orphans are hand reared.

Two of the hutches have heat pads so we can care for hoglets who are orphaned and for very sick or badly injured hedgehogs

How would you describe your shed?

A vital link in the chain. Without it Herts Hogline would not be able to care for the 60+ hedgehogs that pass through it’s doors on average per year.

Could also be described as small, compact and sometimes very smelly!

Future Shed plans

The exterior needs to be repainted – it was done a number of years ago and is looking very tired. Would also love to put down lino to make cleaning the floor easier. The door also lets in a huge draft during the winter, so fixing that some how would be great.

My Shed has lots of history and has lived a charmed life. The ‘old side’ was originally owned by my father in law, hidden away behind his house and mainly used for his building tool storage and a breeding ground for mice and spiders. My wife can remember being scared to enter this sheddy secret domain as a nipper and remains petrified of spiders to this day. A few years back my father in law tried in vain to sell the shed in the local newspaper for a £100 so I seized the opportunity, dropped a few hints that my shed at the back of the garden was rotted into oblivion and hey presto his shed was now mine.

The little shed sat perfectly happy at the end of the garden for a year or so but remained untapped potential until a ‘local businessman and pig farmer’ who we call Pig Bill offered us a wedding present of days labour on anything we wanted. After a few ciders with Pig Bill whilst rubbing chins and pondering we hatched a plan to double the size of the shed by jacking up the roof, building a new floor (with reclaimed skip materials), adding a couple of nice outward opening doors and a small decked area.

So its an off the shelf shed thats been doubled in size and pimped right up into something totally unique to fit the available space.

What started as storage has turned into a workshop, man space, chill out zone and occasional party area.

Its main use is as the head quarters for my hobby come, wage top up of spraypainting stuff. You can see its littered with sculptures and artworks from my days as a street artist (now retired to the Shed) about four years ago. With wifi and power now installed there is nothing I like more than spending an afternoon dreaming up new stencils and p*** takes that I can then turn into something tangible. I’ve sold artworks all over the world, some commercial and some pretty whacky. But its all facilitated by the environment… The installation of ‘Little Ned’ the woodburner has meant I can now use the stencil shed in all seasons, nothing quite like a home fired brew while pondering art and life in the shed.

How would you describe your shed?

Well, its packed with quirkyness… a mixture of spontaneity and functionality. For example, its got a tree growing through the roof. On the day of the build we just couldnt bare to chainsaw it out so we made a hole in the roof for the tree that we then made weather tight.

To me the Shed, is perfectly logical in its evolution but I guess to others looking in, its probably a bit weird.

Who are your Shed inspirations

You always try to not be like your Dad, but unfortunately genetics and learned experiences count. My dad purchased an old chicken shed that he then built in the garden of our first house about 30 years ago. He used this for his fledgling ceramic sculpture business after quitting his teaching job. I have lots of memories of going to see dad hard at work in his ‘studio’ on a summers day. As I grew older I sort of turned into his mini assistant adding textures and finishing touches to his many animal models and silly characters. Hes sold out now, still doing the ceramics but from his cellar, hes in his 70′s so maybe the cold frosty mornings finally got to him.

Future Shed plans

I have to be honest and say I think its at its max for features. But… functionality wise it could get some wendy house or den features. My wife is expecting her first child on the 31st July and based on experience of our friends kids visiting they all seem to end up playing in the shed!

Jo-Anne said the reason for her pinning is that they are actually planning to add a chicken coop design to the HistoricShed.com designs due to the popularity of ‘urban chickens’ and she says the first prototype will be built soon – so if you love chickens and sheds – keep an eye out …

It got me thinking are chooks getting a better deal in terms of shed design than some of us sheddies? But I don’t think I could add a coop category for 2013 Shed of the year what do you think?

It was built by a builder friend called Lee, who designed it to replace a pre historic shed, which must have been 30 years old. My husband helped Lee to dismantle the old shed and a piece of wood with two nails in it, hit my husband on the head and the nails stuck into his scalp. He has never been the same since! He is very accident prone! Also there is a shed part on the side for all the gardening stuff and we used our old stable door.

Why have you got a shed? uses etc

“It was to replace the old shed. I also wanted a place to paint in.
Infact I do most things in there. Write, think, design, drink, create, listen to music, have dinner parties (just for 6). I have also utilized a lot of old furniture, painted it up and made cushions in red and white gingham to give it a cosy, country look. This is a favourite place to have sundowners.”

How would you describe your shed?

A nest in the midst of the garden enabling me to hear all the birds and be part of nature. Giving me inspiration to paint. It is a haven to get away from every day problems. I love the smell of a shed, I used to play house in my Nana’s when I was a little girl. It is very nostalgic. My shed is cosy and cute.

Who are your Shed inspirations

“Just pictures I had seen in magazines, my brother has one now. I think it is the modern trend, also practical for all sorts of uses.
I think my shed has inspired others.”

Future Shed plans

I would love to add on in the same style as the shed, an outside loo and shower room, plus a log holder, carrying on down the side of the house.

A real life Wallace and Gromit – A short taster of the 51 minute documentary about an eccentric British project to build a 100% wooden bicycle and subsequent attempt at setting a new official world land speed record for a wooden bicycle. It follows an often hilarious 11 month journey of a duo who see their £1 bet snowball into a global news story, culminating in a new world record and pride of place in one of the UK’s top museums for their creation.
