Tips to finding the right Australian visa

Irish citizens intending to work, study or set up a business in Australia need to have the right visa to suit their circumstances. The Department of Immigration and Border Protection has an excellent website which walks applicants step by step through the requirements and application process for the dozens of visa options, but the list below summarises the most common visa types for Irish workers.

Costs: Visa application costs range from $420 (€292) for a working holiday visa to $3,520 (€2,447) for some of the skilled visas. See immi.gov.au for the full list. Migration agents can assist with the application process for an additional fee, but are not essential - make sure they are registered with the Australian government.

Temporary visas

Working holiday visa (417): Allows 18-30-year-olds travel and work for up to one year (you can work just six months with one employer). The visa can be extended by a year by working for three months in a regional or rural area. You cannot bring dependent children on this visa.

Employer sponsored (457): The 457 visa entitles you to live in Australia and work for up to four years for an employer who will directly sponsor you. You need to have a job offer in from an approved employer in Australia to apply, and the employer will have to prove your skills can’t be sourced among Australian citizens or permanent residents in the local area. If you want to change positions your new employer must agree to sponsor you, and if you lose your job you must find another within 28 days. Workers can bring partners and children on secondary 457 visas.

Study Visa (subclass 570-576): Allows full-time students to work 40 hours a fortnight. It is becoming increasingly popular (allegedly among working holiday visa holders looking to stay on in Australia), with the number of Irish granted student visas tripling from 217 in 2007/08 to 703 in 2013/14.

Permanent visas

Permanent Residency: All permanent residence visas allow you and family members who have been granted this visa on the same application to stay in Australia indefinitely. Becoming a permanent resident entitles you to Medicare (Australia’s healthcare scheme), to apply for Australian citizenship if you are eligible, to sponsor eligible relatives for permanent residence, and to travel to and from Australia for five years from the date of issue (after that time, you will need a resident return visa or another visa to return to Australia if you leave).

Most long-stay visa schemes are offered under Australia’s skilled migration programme, which is based on the country’s economic needs and skill shortages.

Most permanent residence visas are points-based. Applicants must pass an English test, have a set amount of work experience in an occupation on the consolidated skills shortage list (see below), and meet age requirements for the visa type. All applicants for points-based programmes must submit an online expression of interest throughSkillSelect on the Department of Immigration website. If the criteria are met, the applicant will be invited to lodge a formal visa application (they will suggest which visa you should apply for). The applicant will be asked if they are willing to live and work in regional Australia; saying yes increases the chance of approval if employers are experiencing regional skill shortages in certain areas of the country.

The consolidated skills shortage list for all of Australia currently has about 200 occupations listed. Each state or territory has its own separate list with additional occupations in demand, so check both before applying. Note that these lists, as well as the application criteria, change regularly to meet immigration needs. Many skilled workers will need a skills assessment to have their qualifications accredited (assessing authorities are listed on the skills shortage list). The assessment usually costs about $500.

Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme (187): For workers without employer sponsorship whose occupation is on the skills shortage list for a particular state or territory in regional Australia (which excludes Gold Coast, Brisbane, Newcastle, Sydney, Wollongong or Melbourne). It is a permanent residence visa designed to encourage skilled workers to move to regional areas. Applicants must be under 50 years of age.

Employer Nomination Scheme (186): Allows employers to sponsor highly skilled workers for permanent residency. You must be under 50 years of age.

General Skilled Migration programme: Workers whose occupation is on one of the skills shortage lists but don’t have an employer to sponsor them need to submit an expression of interest and then be invited through SkillSelect to apply. If a territory or government agency decides to nominate you after receiving your expression of interest, you will be invited to apply for a Skilled Nominated Visa (190).

If your occupation is not on the state list for the place you want to move to, but is on the national list, you can apply for a Skilled Independent Visa (189).

Citizenship

If you have permanent residence and are considered “of good character”, you are entitled to apply for Australian citizenship. This will give you the right to vote, to apply to work in the public service or defence forces, to seek election to parliament, to apply for a passport and to travel freely to and from Australia, to receive help from Australia while overseas if needed, and to register children born overseas as Australian citizens by descent. Citizenship ceremonies are held regularly around the country, with Australia Day and St Patrick’s Day the most popular dates for Irish applicants. See citizenship.gov.au .

Most of us welcome hot weather, but when it's too hot for too long there are health risks. When a heatwave hits this summer, make sure the hot weather doesn't harm you or anyone you know.

The very young, the elderly and the seriously ill are the groups who are particularly at risk of health problems when the weather is very hot. In particular, very hot weather can make heart and breathing problems worse.

There is considerable evidence that heatwaves are dangerous and can kill.

Knowing how to keep cool during long periods of hot weather can help save lives.

Why is a heatwave a problem?

The main risks posed by a heatwave are:

dehydration (not having enough water)
overheating, which can make symptoms worse for people who already have problems with their heart or breathing
heat exhaustion
heatstroke

Who is most at risk?

A heatwave can affect anyone, but the most vulnerable people in extreme heat are:

older people, especially those over 75
babies and young children
people with a serious chronic condition, especially heart or breathing problems
people with mobility problems – for example, people with Parkinson's disease or who have had a stroke
people with serious mental health problems
people on certain medications, including those that affect sweating and temperature control
people who misuse alcohol or drugs
people who are physically active – for example, labourers or those doing sports

Tips for coping in hot weather

The following advice applies to everybody when it comes to keeping cool and comfortable and reducing health risks:

Shut windows and pull down the shades when it is hotter outside. If it's safe, open them for ventilation when it is cooler.
Avoid the heat: stay out of the sun and don't go out between 10am and 4pm (the hottest part of the day) if you're vulnerable to the effects of heat.
Keep rooms cool by using shades or reflective material outside the windows. If this isn't possible, use light-coloured curtains and keep them closed (metallic blinds and dark curtains can make the room hotter).
Have cool baths or showers, and splash yourself with cool water.
Drink cold drinks regularly, such as water and fruit juice. Avoid tea, coffee and alcohol.
Stay tuned to the weather forecast on the radio or TV.
Plan ahead to make sure you have enough supplies, such as food, water and any medications you need.
Identify the coolest room in the house so you know where to go to keep cool.
Wear loose, cool clothing, and a hat if you go outdoors.
Check up on friends, relatives and neighbours who may be less able to look after themselves.

Common risk factors for skin cancer include having fair skin, having many moles and freckles, a personal or family history of skin cancer, excessive sun exposure and solarium use. Some ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun is important for bone and muscle health but too much UV can cause sunburn, premature ageing, skin and eye damage and ultimately skin cancer. Protecting skin from over-exposure can help reduce your risk of skin cancer.

UV exposure in Australia

Australia experiences some of the highest levels of UV radiation in the world, because we are close to the equator and have a lot of clear blue-sky days. The Earth's orbit also takes countries in the southern hemisphere (Australia included) closer to the sun in our summertime than countries in the northern hemisphere during their summer.

UV radiation and skin cancer

Skin cells in the top layer of skin (the epidermis) produce a pigment called melanin that gives skin its natural colour. When skin is exposed to UV radiation, more melanin is produced, causing the skin to darken. This is what we call a ‘tan’. A tan is not a sign of good health, but rather of damaged skin cells in trauma.

Tanning can contribute to DNA damage, premature skin ageing and skin cancer. Every time skin is exposed to the sun or a solarium, the total lifetime dose of UV radiation is increased. Over time, this damage adds up, even when no sunburn is experienced.

All types of sunburn, whether serious or mild, can cause permanent and irreversible skin damage, laying the groundwork for skin cancer to develop later in life.

It is recommended that all people, regardless of skin type, use a combination of sun protection measures during the daily sun protection times. The sun protection times are issued whenever the UV level is forecast to be 3 or higher, and sun protection is recommended.

Skin type and skin cancer

People with fair skin are at higher risk of developing skin cancer than people with naturally very dark skin. Skin type is hereditary. Parents with fair skin should educate their children about the importance of sun protection and encourage them to develop good sun protection habits from an early age. This is the best way to help reduce their risk of skin damage and skin cancer in later life.

The melanin in naturally very dark skin offers some protection against the damaging effects of UV radiation and the risk of skin cancer is lower. However, when skin cancer is detected in people with naturally very dark skin, it is often found at a later, more dangerous stage when the risk of death is much higher.

Everyone, whatever their skin type, should become familiar with their skin. Check all of your skin, not just sun-exposed areas. If you notice anything unusual, including any change in shape, colour or size of a spot, or the development of a new spot, visit your doctor immediately.

Moles and freckles and skin cancer

Most people have moles and freckles. However, if you have a great number of freckles or moles, you are at higher risk of skin cancer.

Moles or freckles that grow, change shape or colour, bleed or ulcerate, or any new spots that appear, should be treated with suspicion. Have your doctor check out any unusual changes to your skin as soon as possible.

Age and skin cancer

Melanoma is more common in older adults than younger people, with the average age of diagnosis at 61 years. Although early onset melanoma is comparatively rare, melanoma is one of the most common cancers and the leading cause of cancer death for young Australians. The vast majority (83%) of non-melanoma skin cancer treatments were administered to Australians aged 55 years and above.

Older adults have had more cumulative sun exposure than younger people, with every additional decade of high sun exposure shown to further increase the risk of melanoma. However, by limiting recreational sun exposure, a person can likely decrease their risk of melanoma whatever their age.

Reducing your skin cancer risk

There is not much you can do about your hereditary risk factors, but you can take steps to reduce your risk of skin cancer from over-exposure to UV radiation and recreational sun exposure.

Use a combination of the five sun protection measures during the daily sun protection times to reduce your risk, including:

· · Slip – on sun-protective clothing. Make sure it covers as much skin as possible.

· · Slop – on SPF30 (or higher) broad-spectrum, water resistant sunscreen. Apply 20 minutes before going outdoors and reapply every two hours.

· · Slap – on a broad-brimmed hat that protects the face, head, neck and ears.

· · Seek – shade.

· · Slide – on wrap-around sunglasses. Make sure they meet Australian/New Zealand Standard AS/NZS 1067:2003.

UV levels are most intense during the middle of the day.

The SunSmart UV Alert indicates when the UV level is forecast to be 3 or higher and provides daily sun protection times as a guide for when you do and don’t need sun protection. This is available as a free SunSmart app, or online at SunSmart or the Bureau of Meteorology, in the weather section of newspapers, or as a free website widget.

Afghanistan: Hidden Treasures from the National Museum Kabul

Touring Australia for the first time, Hidden Treasures features more than 230 priceless artefacts of gold, bronze and stone sculptures, ivories, painted glassware and other ancient works of art which were thought lost or destroyed for years. They had been placed in secrecy by a few courageous staff from the National Museum, Kabul and uncovered in 2003.

Rottnest After Dark Series - Capturing the Enemy

A quick scan along any coffee strip in Perth be it Leederville, Mt Lawley, the Perth CBD or Fremantle reveals the popular past time of rugging-up and sipping a hot brew outside in the winter air.

Perched on the edge of a rustic chair in indie, retro, luxe and franchise coffee houses and pubs, West Aussies are indulging in their favourite cup of espresso or pint of beer and relishing every moment.

Alfresco dining is now as much part of the Perth culture as surfing and taking a stroll along the beach and many are also taking the concept into their favourite coffee houses and restaurants during winter.

Perth’s temperatures dip to a mild 15 degrees during the day so it’s no surprise that dining outdoors is such an enjoyable experience. The mild weather conditions are repeated throughout Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide during winter where the sound of grinding coffee has been ringing for decades.

In fact the prospect of a weekender in the south west of Western Australia during the cooler winter months to sample wine or two is a very popular option with a variety of websites offering discounted accommodation and hotel packages.

It’s a stark contrast to most parts of the northern hemisphere where locals shiver through lows of three and four degrees on a normal winter’s day. After receiving such a great response from the 'History of Perth' article, it only seemed fitting to highlight the other end of the spectrum. The future of Perth is an exciting one, with much hype of late regarding the launches of internationally renowned fashion retailers, new development precincts, and construction popping up all over the city!

Perth is slowly transforming from a quiet town on the 'other side of Australia' into a vibrant, bustling city with world renowned attractions. The culturally diverse Aussie spirit exudes from new bars, nightlife, and city plans. Iconic fashion labels are beginning plans to set up retail locations across the country, Perth included. Whilst major hotels are beginning construction. Check out the exciting development that has already occurred in Perth, and the best that is yet to come!

Latest Perth Developments

Perth Arena

Perth Arena is a world class facility, seating 15,500 patrons. The Arena is playing host to the worlds' hottest acts including music, sport and comedy. The luxe building features breathtaking architecture design and world-leading technology. With a retractable roof, permanent tennis court, and grand city views, the Perth Arena was one of the most highly anticipated location launches. Located in the heart of the Perth CBD with an easily accessible underground car park, the Arena is set to become one of the most iconic attractions in Perth. Upcoming artists include Jason Derulo, Lady Gaga, Justin Timberlake, and Katy Perry.

Matisse

Matisse, located in a refurbished abandoned Scarborough venue, oozes luxe exclusivity. This chic nightlife hotspot launched for VIP guests last Wednesday 2nd of April. Now advertised as officially open, the 1250 person capacity beach club, complete with a wading pool and cabanas, has become the most fabulous destination in the city. The Breakwater managing director Sean Reid is responsible for the multi-million dollar redevelopment, which will also include an outdoor alfresco area at the front of the venue, dance floor, casual lounge dining areas and two large bars. Due to its prime location, Matisse is said to be a "big turning point" for Scarborough. The five cabanas are available to hire for a mere $800 for about 8 people. The 'VIP' party package includes food, drinks and a large tv for viewing.

Northbridge Piazza

The Northbridge Piazza is a vibrant, green and friendly space located in the heart of Northbridge, on James Street. Free Perth City Life classes are available on Wednesday nights 6-7pm. You can enjoy alternating weeks of yoga, tai chi and zumba. Features include a large television, seating areas, and close distances to cafes or restaurants.

Art and Sculpture in the City

Perth is such an artistic city, with sculpture scattered throughout the new development sites. The newest artistic construction to pop up is this large green 'cactus' like piece of work. Costing over $1 million of tax payers money, this work was designed by internationally renowned artist James Angus. Selected over two other pieces of work, the large green sculpture appears to change shape when looked at from different angles. It is said that the sculpture represents a living organism and sense of regional identity with Perth and WA.

High Fashion

King street in Perth's CBD is home to various high end fashion and accessory stores including Tiffany & Co, Prada, Gucci, and Hugo Boss. Victoria Secret recently launched their first and only Perth store, located in the domestic airport. However, the airport location only offers perfume and cosmetics. The reality is we still have to shop online for clothing purchases, or nip over to Melbourne to purchase lingerie and briefs.

French luxury maison fashion house, Chanel, has just launched their first and only flagship store in Perth's CBD. Walking up to the elite store on King Street I was intimidated to say the least. Inside, the store decor was minimalist and the floors were shiny as if brand new! Not for the every-day shopper, but definitely a beautiful experience.

Public Transport Efficiency

A $4.1 billion dollar vision spread across 20 years is on the cards for Perth's public transport industry. In an aim to increase efficiency and decrease the amount of cars on the road, the plan includes various elements. One such is the rail extension to Yanchep, Mirrabooka, and Ellenbrook. This suburbs are quite hard to get to unless you drive, and with all three areas purporting new developments and population increases, this is something the government has been discussing for some time.

A light rail system has also been proposed, which will make public transport travel the easiest, and quickest option. The objectives with the plan are to catch up to the public transport technology as displayed in other countries, maintain effective traffic control with the population increases, and it is thought that around 70% of all travels to the city CBD will be via public transport.

Elizabeth Quay

The images of the proposed Esplanade waterfront are exciting to say the least! This long awaited Perth face lift is going to cost around $2.6 billion, and will be renamed Elizabeth Quay. Included in the huge 10-hectare site will be 1700 apartments, office space, and retail space. The area will be pedestrian-orientated and will be home to the hottest new shops, cafes, restaurants, and living areas. Completion of the ground and shopping precinct is suggested to be just 2015.

Top Shop Top Man

Construction is well underway at the Carillon city site for the debut of Perth's first Top Shop Top Man. This is what the proposed two level retail store will look like after completion. Much of Carillon City is closed to make way for the new retail icon, and excitement is buzzing. The implementation of forward marketing and new high end retailers such as this will bring a much needed lift to the Perth City reputation.

H&M

International leading fashion brand H&M has just opened its flagship store in Melbourne, with plans to open locations across the country - including Perth! H&M features apparel and accessories for men and women.
The full concept flagship store located at Melbourne´s GPO is purported to be one of H&M's largest stores globally, spanning over three floors.

Fashion Brands

Other major international retailers are set to follow suit and will start planning stores for locations across Australia. Banana republic and Cos are just a few of the brands set to open in Perth. Zara is due to expand the brand's Australian presence, opening a store in Perth later this year according to pop sugar. Sephora has just announced they will be coming to Australia in early 2015 and are currently scouting 25 possible locations. Rejecting offers to open concession stands within both Myer and David Jones, Sephora is set to open up stand alone stores across the country. Let's hope Perth is included for this cosmetic giant!

Easter is such a beautiful, exciting time of the year. You may have started to see the abundance of little chocolate eggs, and fluffy toy bunny rabbits filling out your local supermarket. Spread across two weeks, aligning with school holidays, Easter is a religious celebration of rebirth. But even if you are not religious, it is still a pleasant time of year (public holidays yay!) where people come together to enjoy life - and chocolate!

Easter Sunday falls on the 20th of April this year, with Good Friday (ph) on the 18th of April. This holiday is super exciting for kids - the race to find the chocolate eggs in the Easter hunt- however there is more to this annual tradition than religion or kids' fun. Various stores run sales, and local organisations host events or shows. Here is my 'best of Easter' guide for 2014.

Easter Events in Perth

Rockingham Easter Carnival

The carnival of Easter fun runs over Friday 18th, Saturday 19th and Sunday 20th of April at the Village Green in Rockingham, about a 30 minute drive south of Perth. The open times are 12-9pm Friday, and 10am-9pm Saturday and Sunday. The carnival is set to be filled with fairy floss, live bands, food, and fireworks!

St. Stephan's Easter Fete

The fete will be held at St. Stephen's, Duncraig, Hamer Oval, 100 Doveridge Drive, on the 5th of April from 10am to 4pm. Entry is free, and the event promises craft stalls, dancing, face painting, a silent auction, devonshire tea, food stalls and camel rides. Definitely check it out!

Easter at Karrinyup Shopping Centre

The History of Perth

In 1829, Captain James Stirling founded Perth as part of the Swan River Colony. Stirling thought the natural environment around Perth was “as beautiful as anything of this kind I had ever witnessed” and advocated that a colony be established there. The British Government agreed to found the colony as the first free settlement in Australia, and settlers began to arrive in Western Australia in June 1829.

Iconic Perth has so much history, including vintage buildings, artwork, and stories. In the age of 2014, the people of Perth (and around the world) are becoming more aware of themselves as far as health is concerned, and the growing need for change, both socio-culturally and environmentally.

With general public possessing increased environmental awareness and many new organisations campaigning for ethical responsibilities, animal rights, sustainability and fair trade, we are beginning to see a trend develop where consumers are more concerned about the products they purchase, and the food they eat.

Trending right now is organic living. What once was a niche market, with organic stores few and far between, is now a well known healthy life style change. You may have already familiarised yourself with elements of this lifestyle i.e. eating gluten free, or purchasing organic fresh produce from the market, however, this post will go through the basic components of a healthy lifestyle:

What ingredients are really in your food products

The general consumer attitude is now pro free range however there is so much more to your processed, packaged foods that is not discussed. The following, but not limited to; colours, flavours, numbers, and MSG are all added to the majority of processed, packaged goods. These ingredients are synthetically formulated in laboratories, and provide no health benefits. These types of ingredients are contributing factors to the rise in illness, such as diabetes, and weight gain.

Preservatives are also often used, to prolong shelf life. Although some preservatives are sourced from natural products, such as ascorbic acid (vitamic c), taurine and aspartame, the following list are ones to watch out for:

Sulphites - linked to asthma and allergy
Sodium Benzoate - when mixed with ascorbic acid it forms benzene, a known carcinogen
Nitrite - found in processed meats, is linked to cancer
BHA/BHT - potential carcinogen

How simple it is to live an organic lifestyle

1. Check the ingredients list

2. Be aware of products that are not good for human consumption

3. Pick your battles

It's no use trying to give up everything all at once, and fad diets are known for relapsing. Pick one ingredient, or food group to knock out of your lifestyle eating. My favorites include:

Juicing

Juice up all of your favourite fruits or vegetables for power packed vitamin meals. Placing a sliced lemon in your water will help detox your body.

No Packaged Foods

There is a common belief that if it says 'gluten free' or 'diet' on the package then it will help you loose weight. But in fact, these super processed, packaged foods generally contain a high percentage of fats and sugars, and other ingredients that are synthetically created in a lab. Cleansing doesn't need to be that difficult - fresh fruit and vegetables, nuts, and lean meats are all that is needed.

How to incorporate healthy habits into a busy/budget conscious lifestyle

It doesn't have to be expensive to live healthy. Here are my cheat ideas:

Stock up on healthy, fresh, organic produce. Cook one big meal, separate into plastic containers (BPA free, microwave safe) and freeze. Then just take out one container each time you need a quick lunch or dinner and reheat in the microwave.
Great meals to cook include; chicken and rice, curry, pasta, fish and vegetables, Asian inspired noodles, soup, stir fry, or meat and vegetables.
Great cheap snacks on the go; bananas, apples, kiwi fruit, carrot sticks, and celery sticks.
Fill up all of your water bottles and put in the fridge - ready to grab one on your way out. I don't know about you but I am always spending on a bottle of water when I'm out, feeling dehydrated. Saving $3.00 per day not purchasing a bottle of water, adds up to $20.00 a week!
Buy your shampoo, conditioner, cosmetics, and household items in bulk.

Erskine

About 10 minutes south of Mandurah, lies the cute small suburb of Erskine. Built on the port, is a small section of suburbia houses, a park, and the prettiest view of the sea. In Summer months, the tide will go out far enough to walk 1km out on the water. Erskine is also the best spot for crabbing! Bring your camera, and a friend to watch the view!

Kings Park

Jacob's Ladder

242 steps, and 43 metres of pure cardio fitness. Located in Kings Park, Jacob's Ladder is the ultimate free work out. Bring your friend and lots of water! When you reach the top, you can enjoy the beautiful view of the city and Swan River, before jogging back down again.

Mindarie Marina

If you are in the mood for a leisurely walk along the water, and a lazy lunch at a restaurant with a beautiful view, then you should check out the Mindarie Marina. About 35 minutes north of Perth, the marina has a long boardwalk strip of restaurants, cafes and gift shops. In the Summer month of November, the marina plays host to a festival day, showcasing local produce and talent across a full day of market stalls, live demonstrations, live performers, and kid's entertainment. Try the Indian Ocean Brewing Company for lunch and a beer!

Yanchep National Park

Wanting something a little different to do this weekend? Why not venture a little out of Perth and check out one of the great National Parks.

Get your walking boots on and picnics packed and head up north to a little place called Yanchep!

Where is it?

Yanchep is located 50km North of Perth, towards Two Rocks and Lancelin. It would about 45mins to drive here, which in Perth, isn’t too bad!

What can I do there?

There is lots to do here, from picnics, visiting the koalas to hiking and bird watching. Whatever you might like, Yanchep has a lot to offer! This is good for those who want to see a little bit more of Perth, without travelling too far. Find the traveller in you, take the trip and explore!

They have great picnic areas, either overlooking the lake or nestled in the woodlands, with many having free BBQ’s for everyone to use.

If you are spending the day here, why not try and spot one of the Western Grey Kangaroos which have been spotted early or late in the day. Or visit the koalas, along the 240-metre koala boardwalk, where you can see these native animals in their natural environment.

Another thing to do is take a hike around one of the nine walk trails designed to suit to all age groups and fitness abilities. You can chose from a shorter walk of 500m or if you think you’re up for it, take on the 46.2km hike!

Yanchep Park has other unique attractions, such as; caves, aboriginal experience and bird watching. These are all great experiences and very educational.

BEACH CONCERT AT SCARBOROUGH (08/02/2014)

Proudly brought to you by the City of Stirling and as part of the Summerset Arts Festival, the Beach Concert is a very popular local event which draws large crowds of people and is always a big hit. This is a free event so why not get down and check it out!
There will be a variety of food and beverages available to purchase from mobile food vendors, nearby cafes, restaurants and take-away outlets close to the Beach Concert area. This is an alcohol free event. The very popular, Birds of Tokyo, will be performing, along with many other fantastic artists, such as Nathan Kaye

CHINESE NEW YEAR (09/02/2013)

The annual Chinese New Year fair is a free community event that welcomes in the Year of the Horse, which begins on the 31st of January 2014. This is a family friendly event catering for people of all ages, running from 10am – 9pm.The festival has many different stalls, showcasing a wide variety of cultural entertainment, food, beverages and crafts.Lion dances are a colourful and spectacular sight, as well as performances of traditional music, dancers, martial arts and many more, throughout the entire day.
If you aren’t attending this event, you should still take note of the date due to some of the roads around Northbridge being closed off for the festival.

VALENTINES DAY AT THE SHED (14/02/2014)

BALLIN’ IN THE PARK (15/02/2014)

Ballin' in the Park returns to the McCallum Park foreshore with a stellar showcase of Perth's best ballers, as well as hip hop beats, food stalls, retail stalls and much more.

Ballin' in the Park plays host to Perth's largest outdoor, three on three basketball tournament, with two divisions of 3ON3 and a standalone three point shoot out tournament.

If you would to participate in the tournament, the cost is $100 per team for the 3ON3 Championships and $15 per shooter for the three point competition. Register now at www.ballininthepark.com.au For spectators, entry is free and there will be plenty of shaded areas to keep you cool and safe from the sun.

Where to see Dolphins in Perth

This is something everyone has to do whilst they are in Perth! A must for everyone’s bucket list. Whether you like Dolphins or not, seeing them in the wild is an amazing experience and best of all, it’s free!

Not many people realise how easy it is too see these magnificent creatures in Perth, so here is a list of all the best places to go.

Blackwall Reach

Most people have said this is the best place to watch dolphins not only in Perth, but in WA. Simply because it’s so close to the river mouth. Spend a few hours around the area and you’ll be sure to see a dolphin or two!

Perth Water to Matilda Bay

The Narrows Bridge is a great spot for anything wanting to traverse the river. The best chance of spotting some dolphins around here would be later in the day or whenever the ferries are running as the dolphins tend to swim alongside the ferries.

Deepwater Point

This is a great spot due to the amount of fish species that hang around, a dolphin’s heaven! It’s a lovely picnic spot with a café and also barbeques, it makes for an ideal spot to have lunch, or set up camp for a few hours and see if you can spot any dolphins.

Hillarys Beach to Ocean Reef

The north rock wall makes an ideal viewing point due to all the rocks attracting all the marine life, however close towards Ocean Reef is known to be a little better.

Dolphins are not the only marine life to have been spotted here, some claim to have seen sharks and rays amongst other larger fish.

Penguin Island

This is one of the only places where you can actually swim with them. Some other locations mentioned, like Blackwall Reach, you can swim in the river, however you’re not necessarily swimming ‘with’ them.

Penguin Island have a cruise operating which takes you up close to their local population of dolphins. The dolphins usually love the company and have been known to hang around the humans.

10 NEW Things to do This Year

So you’re travelling around Australia and want some new things to try whilst you’re in WA. Why not try and do some new things this year that you haven’t done before?
We have created a little list for you of some recommendations to try throughout the year. Feel free to create your own and let us know if you have done any of those which we have suggested and how they went!
Hopefully you will get chance to tick a few of these off, if not all! Good luck.

1. Go to Rottnest Island

We’ve told you about this place many times, but that’s because it’s just magnificent! It’s one of the prettiest place in WA, with its peaceful beaches and friendly wildlife. If you haven’t already been to Rottnest it’s a must this year!
Get the ferry over for the day, or stay the night! It’s up to you. Why not hire bikes and snorkel gear and take a trip around the island to any of the 64 beaches and take a dip. See what the ocean has to offer.

2. Visit a Winery

This is another must for 2014, if you haven’t already been! If you have, why not go again? All wineries are different and offer different types of wines to taste.
WA has some incredible wineries, which are famous worldwide! There are many to choose from, whether it be down in the South West at Margaret River or closer to home in the Swan Valley, all locations offer tasting of their own locally produced wines.

3. Check out an Irish Bar

Perth is packed with many different bars, clubs and restaurants for you to try out. But why not have a great night and enjoy it Irish style? If you haven’t been to an Irish bar, this is another thing we would say to try ‘new’ this year!

An Irish party is something totally different and definitely something you should try whilst staying in WA.

4. Take a trip to Adventure World

You might have been to a water park before and so this isn’t necessarily NEW, however, Adventure World is a great day out and certainly something you should try this year! You never know you might want to go back for more. Enjoy the sunshine with lots of different water rides, and even a roller-coaster. They have lots to entertain you! 5. Learn to Paddle Board

Paddle boarding is such a great sport which requires great core strength and balance.
This is something for those that want to try something a little different. It’s not your normal sport or activity but is still really enjoyable!
Lots of places allow you to hire the boards and take them out on the water. If you are wanting to do it on the beach you would need to check the weather to make sure it’s a calm day as waves are not ideal for this kind of activity. You can take them to some rivers and lakes also, but you would need to research where is best to go.

6. Try a New Sport

This would tie in great with number 5, but if that’s not your thing then don’t worry there are many other sports Perth has to offer. You can join a local netball, soccer, cricket or even AFL club. You will need to do the research as to which clubs are close to your area.

7. Get a New Job

Fed up of working in your current job? Thinking of staying here a while and looking for a more long term job? Why not look at getting into the mines, or do your regional work for the second year visa.
For those of you travelling and now realising you want to stay, you are all required to do the three month regional work to be eligible for the second year visa.
For those on your second year and wanting to stay a little longer in WA and try and new job/career. Why not have a look into the mines?

8. Have a Picnic in Kings Park

This is another one that has been recommended before, simply because it’s an incredible view. Take your partner, friends or even family up to Kings Park, with a picnic, and enjoy the beautiful scenery Perth has to offer at night. This is on many lists for top ten things to do in Perth and is an incredible place, so obviously is has to go on our new things to do.

9. See Wild Dolphins

Not many people know that you can see dolphins from the riverbanks in Perth, or even from the beach (if you’re lucky). If you haven’t ever seen these magnificent creatures then be sure to get down to the Swan River and try your luck! Obviously due to them being wild they might not always be there, however there are certain spots around Perth which people have said they have sighted dolphins.

10. Try a New Food

This is always a get resolution to do, it widens your knowledge of food and allows you to try lots of different things! If you’re travelling you have probably tried a lot of new things already, unless you’re very fussy! But this is a great thing to make sure you do this year. Broaden your taste buds, wrap your hands around something new and get your senses out there! You could try something as simple as a new fish or get really daring and try a whole new culture. Be sure to try something you have never tried before. You might end up loving it!

Perth Twilight Hawkers Market (18/10/2013 - 11/04/2014)

Late in the afternoon at Forrest Place, colourful stalls are set up and the air fills with the tantalising aromas of international cuisines. Performers take to the stage to rehearse music and dances. These markets run every Friday night, with hundreds of stalls offering a wide range of delicious foods from all around the world. Sweet treats are also available, from donuts to macaroons to Malaysian kuehs.

There are tables available (most people are happy to share) and stools are also provided that can serve as seats or tables. The Wogboys Live on Stage (08/01/2014 - 28/04/2014)

This is a very popular show around the whole of Australia. Set in the mid 90’s it follows the life of everyday situations in the lives of a group of Wogboys.

Nick Giannopoulos is an accomplished actor, producer, director and writer. He co-wrote and produced Wogs Out of Work and The Wog Boy which went on to gross more than 12 million dollars at the Australian Box office. He hosted and produced the TV special Greece is the Wordwhich was watched by over 3 million people on the Seven Network and repeated before the Athens Olympics Opening Ceremony.

Welcome to Midlandia (17/01/2014 - 09/02/2014)

This event stems from the very popular Fringe Festival! When all the madness and creativeness sis finished in Northbridge, it will head east to Midlandia, a brand new destination for a cultural extravaganza.There are two main events that make up the Midlandia festival. Locale is a pop-up venue at the corner of Cale Street and The Crescent that will turn the centre of Midland into a free outdoor music, food and art experience. Running over three weekends from 17 January to 2 February, Locale will offer DJs, Fringe performers, markets and live music on Friday nights and Saturday and Sunday afternoons. Locale is a licensed event and anyone under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.
The Midland Junction Arts Centre is the home of the Midlandia Fringe. Just a short walk from Locale, this heritage-listed venue will be a hotbed of entertainment featuring 26 acts presenting 75 shows.

Midlandia Locale will be open on the following dates and times;

Summer Swing Smackdown is an epic vintage-style event that's a must-do on your summer calendar. Scitech opened in 1988 and is a not-for-profit organisation who aims to increase awareness, interested in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
