Holy Cow (as if you need another striped post)

I ran out yesterday to purchase a light and/or bright piece (I was thinking coral or pink) for my trip. I was short on time and money. The stores didn't have coral or pink (or resort wear in general) but everyone surely has stripes and not just one option but about five. H + M's stripes were cute and most of their tops fit perfectly. The Gap looked like J. Crew two years ago. I didn't have time to fly into J. Crew. (one of my favorites). Anyway I grabbed a striped top at H + M, I convinced myself it didn't look like the five or so others I already own! (my fav. color combo. is still navy and white) HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT STRIPES? YAY OR NAY FOR SPRING? I'M ALMOST OVER THEM BUT NOT QUITE!! OH AND AS YOU PROBABLY KNOW COLORED JEANS ARE EVERYWHERE TOO!

I especially like to layer stripes! This is a def. a look you'd catch me wearing. A faux fur vest + stripes = Yes!

Stylistically my tastes are sort of all over the place. This mind set affects both my wardrobe and my home selections. I tend to stay very focused while creating and devising concepts for my clients. I of course throw their designs off a bit with unexpected patterns and textures and my client's actually appreciate being pushed out of their comfort zone a little. (key word being "little") but for myself, I like to experiment. One day I may feel a little Boston preppy, the next coastal chic, the next slightly bohemian. I think the strongest designs blend a few styles seamlessly. Today I'm feeling California Cool. I read this weekend that January 23rd is supposedly the most depressing day of the year. I'm not sure if that's true or not but the rainy, raw weather, certainly doesn't help. No complaints here, I'll take this winter over last year any day!!
Today I'm drawn to fresh, warm, colorful styles, that use both modern and classic elements. The two homes below are from CA home + design magazine. The first space is by designer Vanessa De Vargas

Looking back at my posts, I seem to be blogging about bright, cheerful visual subjects. I can probably thank old man winter for that. It's sort of an intrinsic quality of blogging, your posts tend to reflect your mind set. I need to focus on up beat, colorful images when the days are chilly and gray. I love the quality of light in this space. The room is fairly clean and simple. I also like the mix of what feel like vintage pieces of furniture with the modern fabrics, Manuel Canovas wallpaper and Ikea (I'm not sure if this one is still available) light fixture. I'm also currently loving light pickled floors.

How amazing is this watercolor? I may need to commission a piece myself someday!

I was searching for artwork for a teenage girl's room I'm finishing up and happened upon artist Caitlin McGauley's work. Her bright, colorful but chic style beautifully captures her subjects. Caitlin is available for custom commissions but also sells prints on her website. I love her images for Kate Spade and Tory Burch. I may be using one of her paintings as inspiration for a new project I'm beginning work on. I just never know what will get my mind racing with ideas...

St. John - Daytime Inspiration

Brrr. It's been very chilly in Boston this weekend. I can't really complain because it's been a mild winter, but I'm not much of a winter person so I'm getting excited to pack my bags and head to a balmy, temperate world. I'm leaving for to St. John in a couple of weeks, so I'm starting to think about what to pack. Here's a peek at a typical daytime outfit! I can't run out and buy a new wardrobe (I feel guilty as it is that I bought a plane ticket) so I'm going to try and work with what I own and maybe fill in with a couple colorful tanks and tube tops.

Oughton Limited

I adore this beautifully constructed line of equestrian inspired travel bags. Oughton Limited's ideas grew from a strong concept steeped in history and tradition. This clearly shows! The bags are carefully constructed of waxed canvas and brass halter squares. I love the idea of incorporating everyday materials in a brilliant and unique manner! The images above depict an Oughton Limited inspiration board. Below is a bit about the designer's concept:

The founder, Daphne Markcrow tells her story best:

"The first OUGHTON bag grew out of a specific need... I was shipping horses from my farm to a nearby trainers… and wanted something to carry and keep organized everything I needed… my traditional show trunk was too unwieldy. I was looking for something I could carry to the tack stall and ‘work out of’ once I got there. Nothing really existed in the marketplace that would work.

So I had a bag made and loved it. It worked exactly as planned, making my life so much easier. I was able to stay so much more organized. Finally there was a place for everything. January - Book Of The Month

With the much anticipated return of the show "Mad Men" quickly approaching, how can I not share his recently released book. big, easy STYLE. Although Bryan isn't on the show any longer (he was a great character) I'm very excited for the fifth season of Mad Men, which is slated to begin on Sudnay 3.25. I think a small cocktail party is in order! How I wish I owned a retro fitted bar like the one pictured below. This book is great, it's filled with a diverse group of beautifully layered rooms, just the way I like em'!!

I LOVE the idea of retrofitting a vintage piece of furniture into a bar with a sink and all!

Neat as a pin - Gucci Resort 2012

I'm leaving for St. John ( I haven't been to a warm destination in years, so I'm pretty giddy about my trip) in a couple of weeks, so I'm on the look out for some new resort wear. I just want to add a couple of items to my warm weather frocks. Pictured is Gucci's 2012 resort line. With the exception of this first image and of course the sandals and shades, this line doesn't look overly "resort" like to me. Chic, yes. Tailored, yes. Resort, not so much. I do love the looks though!! I wear black all winter, so I don't think I'll be packing any black for my trip.

I'm still loving red pants. You don't get much more classic then red and black.

This is a cute look. You need to be a rail to wear it, but cute! (again, great little red bag)

I'm actually going away this winter. It's been a long time coming, that's for sure....I'm on the look out for a few resort brights to throw in my suit case. These looks from Heidi Merrick's Spring 2012 would do!

My (what should be) simple resolutions and goals

3. Purchase a "fixer-upper" cottage

5. Always Cherish the best and free moments in life (it's easy to lose your perspective when life is insanely busy)

6. Save, save, save

7. Travel when I can (it can be a very simple trip, but it's important to change your scenery)

Goals + A Fav.

GOALS, RESOLUTIONS, AMBITIONS, whatever you'd like to call them, I have a few I really want to focus on in 2012. I find if the list is too lengthy, not enough is accomplished. I have a top three list and then the little ideas that I'll chip away at. (look for those on Monday/Tuesday)

1. Is to continue to grow my business and blog. I am putting the finishing touches on some amazing projects, and have two photo shoots and some other exciting events on the horizon. To continue to Grow and develop all facets of SHELTER is numero uno. (Actually being the best Mommy in the world is #1 but again that sort of goes without saying)

2. Settle my damn divorce - Who knew this process would take so long? I just need to wrap it up and move on. When that affair (no pun on words) is settled I can accomplish my next task.

3. BUY and RENOVATE a quaint fixer upper. I'll be moving my digs this year, scary but also very exciting. Please stay posted for the change. If I do move, I will of course document any renovation and re-hab I take on.

So you ask? Why the photos of Lee Kleinhelter's work? Well, she's an inspiration. Like Lee, I enjoy keeping my designs graphic, exciting and timeless. She always gets it right and I adore her style and her shop. Her designs always WOW! I'm a sucker for the "wow" factor. My aim is to do the same for my clients. I usually have to push them out of their comfort zones a bit, but when they take risks, I'm the first to know that they are so glad they did!!

I've always been an admirer of Lee Kleinhelter's work. She and her husband have created a dynamic team. Lee is the designer and Kevin, the builder. Lee also owns an amazing shop in Atlanta (Buckhead), GA. aptly named Pieces. (to own a tiny store front will be a future goal in say: 2015, or so) Here's a peek at their office space. What I learned in 2011.

hmm where to begin? This post is sort of a continuation to my 2010 "what I've learned" post, which was a moment for me to reflect on the life changing "craziness" going on at the time. 2011 was a year of adjustment and growth for me. So here are the major thoughts that currently come to mind and what I've learned:

- I've learned that life can change in an instant and you just have to hold on tight; when it sucks, embrace the good and let yourself grieve through the sad.

- I've learned you need to face adversity head on. It can be unpleasant as hell but in the end you'll be stronger, smarter and all the better because of it. Not everything, but some things, do happen for a reason.

- I've learned to remain positive, trust me it helps!!

- I've learned change is good! Always take risks even if they scare you to death.

- I've learned everything will be okay, in fact everything may be better if you hang in there!

- I've learned it's important to be independent in every way possible, have your own friends, hobbies and resources to earn your own income!

- I've learned that a run does help to clear your head. I'm not a marathoner trust me, but two miles can work wonders!

- I've learned that you truly don't need much in life to be happy. Surround your self with good people, great food, a stash of prosecco, a warm, comfortable home (the size doesn't matter!), an outfit that makes you feel fabulous, and great music. (good health - goes without saying). Seriously, think back on the best times over the past year, I bet they don't involve much more then I've listed!

This excerpt from Chicken Fried by Zac Brown pretty much sums it up for me:

"It's funny how it's the little things in life that mean the most, not where you live or what you drive or the price tag on your clothes, there's no dollar sign on a piece of mind, this I've come to know."

- I've learned that there is always room for improvement and growth on my outlook and attitude!

I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday! I'm off on a mini-shopping spree today. I have a pretty large install tomorrow and my assistants and I are also going to style my client's home. I'm styling a home next week too. I've gathered some great objects but today I'm focusing on the mantel designs. Wish me luck, I'm not sure what I'm doing yet but I've gathered some inspirational images and wanted to share them with you!

I love a number of Diana Vreeland's quotes but the one I posted yesterday got me thinking about personal style. I know everyone has their own, but trends do tend to influence our decisions. Real Simple has a fun article in the January 2012 issue about re-engergzing your look and wardrobe. I know I'd love to add a few fresh, key pieces to my closet. So here's a peek at the three categories they conjured up. Which do you "mostly" fall into? Or maybe you have your own defined sense of style. If so, please share it with us! I'd say I'm a mix between the edgy-preppy and a little Bohemian. I do wear lots of black and large pieces of jewelry a la Diana Vreeland, so I guess that's minimal. (but that 3rd outfit is def. not me) It all really depends of my mood and destination. Today I can't lie, I'm wearing black yoga pants and a fitted zip front hoodie. The perfect attire for cleaning and cooking for the holidays, don't you think?

If Your Style Is Bohemian . . .

add a little structure.

You love long, flowy skirts, ethnic jewelry, fringy bags, and chunky sandals. But sometimes too much of that sort of thing goes too far…out. Vreeland Chic

It's no surprise that Connor NY's newest stationery collection inspired by the fearless magazine fashion editor Diana Vreeland is fabulously chic, from the gold and ivory horn necklace, down to the red hot liner, it's perfection.
The Diana Vreeland book by Eleanor Dwight has definitely made my wish list. Diana's sense of style was elegant but edgy. She wasn't afraid to take risks and always pushed boundaries. Ideas we should all really live by! I'm still pretty fascinated with red right now. It's such a cheerful shade in small doses! Happy Holidays my friends......xx, Julie

Cranberry Ginger Fizz Cocktail

Prep time: 5 mins

Cook time: 6 mins

Total time: 11 mins

Serves: 4

Ingredients

3/4 cup sugar
3/4 cup water
1 cup fresh cranberries
1 lemon, cut into wedges
1/2 orange, cut into slices
1 1/2 cups dry gin – Bombay Sapphire, Beefeater or Tangueray suggested
1 cup chilled Ginger Ale
4 mint springs

Preparation

Bring sugar and water to a boil in a medium saucepan, stir until sugar is dissolved. Remove from heat; pour off all but one cup of syrup, reserving any extra for another use.
Heat the syrup to a boil and then reduce heat to medium. Add the cranberries and simmer for 2-3 minutes until they just begin to burst. Remove from heat and let cool in syrup.
Place 2 Tablespoons drained cranberries and 6 Tablespoons cranberry syrup in a large pitcher; add the lemon wedges and orange slices.
Using a muddler or wooden spoon, vigorously mash the fruit.
Stir in gin and let steep for at least 5 minutes.
Strain into a medium pitcher.
Fill 4 glasses with crushed ice and 1/4 cup ginger ale.
Fill a cocktail shaker with ice and then pour half the cranberry mixture into the shaker and shake vigorously for 10 seconds, strain liquid into two glasses. Repeat.
Mound additional ice on top of each glass and garnish with 3 candied cranberries and a mint sprig.
