My name is Jackie (24 yrs old) and I am a HUGE fan of Rizzoli and Isles. I love your section on how to dress like Maura. She is such a classy and professional dresser. I am now begining my career and would like to model my work wardrobe after hers. My question is concerning a sweater worn by here in “I Kissed a Girl.”

I thought I was so ready to fulfill this challenge. SO ready! But then I realized I’d fallen behind on episodes, and I hadn’t seen the episode she was talking about. And what’s more – I needed to, because she couldn’t find a picture of what she was talking about. Luckily, I didn’t have to go through a bunch of screencaps because she directed me to the exact section of the video on TNT’s website where I’d find the sweater she was talking about. (And I made my own screencaps! Mwahahaha. Oh, I am so powerful! …Or something. Okay, fine. It just means I know how to press a button. Mwahhaha! I think the button-pressing association of America will be duly impressed.)

It’s a really beautiful gray sweater (Maura Isles clothes are great, I told you – didn’t I tell you? …I’m telling you now!) There’s some funky, channel knit work, and some buttons on the sleeves. I found some options that fit with this same idea. Some selections are a little bit more of a wide interpretation of her top, but I think Isles would approve of them all.

I especially love the Ella Moss dolman and it’s  in the color “Dime” – isn’t that creative? BTW – dolman sleeves are very on trend (hot, Hot, HOT) for Fall 2010. I picked pieces here that I thought a relaxed, casual-but-style-conscious Maura Isles would like. The Gabriella Rocha dolman I included even has the same sort of graphic pattern that Isles wears on a dress in the episode.

It’s time to take a look at The Closer fashion! And this is great because not only do I enjoy the show, but I’ve previously interviewed the costume designer for The Closer - Greg LaVoi! (He was very nice and incredibly knowledgeable.)

For this request, I’m keeping in mind that our slim reader is under 5’5″. She noted that sometimes certain jackets will make her look shorter. And it’s true, if you’re short then certain items will overpower your frame becuase of the proportions. Eep! For this reason, I’m going to veer away from any billowy or roomy jackets, and go for structured fits.

Keeping in mind her size and budget ideas I was able to find some great stuff similar to The Closer clothing she was looking for – I hope!

Dressing when you are petite and on the short side there are a couple tips to remember:

• Avoid wide legged pants, try skinny cuts or capri’s that taper.
• Skirts can be just about any length but long. Above the knee works best for you.
• No cuffed pants, it’ll chop the visual look up and make you look stumpy. And no cuffs on your blazers and jackets, if you can help it. At least not cuffs with different material/colors.
• Pencil skirts are your friend. A flared, A-line skirt, not so much.
• Try matching socks/pants/shoes so there is a monochrome look that lengths a visual line. This is why Marilyn Monroe would always match her stockings to her heels, and why many actresses wear nude heels with bare legs on the red carpet.
• You can add pizazz to boring jackets with details like belted front’s, the use of metallic threads in tweed, or by using brooches and pins.
• To appear taller, use vertical stripes (pinstripe suit!) on clothing, or anything to draw the eye downward. This can be accomplished with V-neck tops.

Shops I’m suggesting for great suits include Anne Taylor and Banana Republic. Items by Jones New York, Theory, Classiques Entier, Kenneth Cole New York, Charter Club and AK Anne Klein are also professional and stylish. If you have a local Marshall’s or TJ Maxx, I’d definitely always check there for discounted items. Because let’s be honest, suits and suit separates are always pricey. But there are ways to get more mileage out of your pieces.

Mix and match suit pieces with jackets, blazers, and skirts. Buy some neutral colors for investment pieces – meaning you’ll wear them a lot. If you don’t like what I’ve selected here, I’ve since realized that Macy’s has a great selection of suits and separates that are sometimes more affordable. Also check Overstock.com for great suit separates. (And this, and this.)

Here are the items I selected for Ellen in our The Closer fashion piece:

Triacetate 1-Button Jacket: The one button style is hip, and it lets you wear a lovely patterned V-neck top under it. Black is basic and always handy. And you can re-dress it in a million different ways. I especially like this jacket because it’s very form-fitting, and if you check the back (I did) it has wonderful vertical seams.

Petite lightweight wool suit: I like that this is meant for cold months, but it’s still light weight on your body. The gray color is another great neutral. And if you want to keep your body looking a little less petite, it’s a better option than the black. As seen in the picture here, if you wear it very traditionally with standard shoes and a white camisole, you can get away with wearing one truly great statement necklace.

AK Anne Klein Slim Skirt: It’s a little boring, but getting these basics is important, and then you can add in little fashionable flairs with jewelry or shoes. And people do respect other people who dress well. Any pencil skirt like this that falls above the knee is perfect. I also like this black Michael Kors skirt under $70, and this Jones New York skirt in Jet/Alabastor.

The Empire Pant – Petite: These don’t flare out too much, which is good. I also like that they’re on sale for under $30. They’re also available in black.

Brief Meeting Blazer: If you want to veer away from the traditional look and go for a bit more fashionable one, this navy blazer is great. Because of the color, you’d need a pair it with navy or khaki pants, a colored skirt or sheath dress.

Classiques Entier® Belted Bouclé Jacket: This piece is fun but still professional. Boucle, like tweet, is perfect for fall and winter. I also fell for this Rebecca Taylor Tweet Skirt.

Classiques Entier® Heathered Crepe Jacket: I love this. Wear a modest chiffon top with long ties under a blazer. And I love that structured blazer.

Charter Club Jacket, Long Sleeve Printed: This is structured, has basic colors, and I just generally am in love with it.

I received the Rosette Headband in Violet to review, handmade by the Etsy Shop Traxa. This violet rose headband has a rosette flower attached to a metal headband. The rose is made of violet organza, and has the added sparkle of violet and gray beads sewn into the center.

Each headband is carefully handmade. There is felt attached to the back of the rose so that it slips over your hair easily, and each edge of the petals is specially treated so that it won’t gray. I inspected the petals, and they really are sewn quite well, and I don’t suspect there will be much fraying (if at all) over the years. The way the petals are put together, there’s a little bit of poof for each one. The one issue is that I’ll have to try and find a place to store it tilted upwards, because placing it down horizontally will eventually smush down half of the petals.

Because these are handmade and you can pick the color, I might also suggest asking for the rose to be made a smidge smaller. But that entirely depends on your style preference. The diameter is 2.5 inches.

The headband comes carefully bubble wrapped from Lisbon, Portugal!

You can order the headband in many other colors – and I suggest making sure it’s one that will show up against your hair color. This is a sweet, precious headband that makes accessorizing very easy.

On Hellcats, Ashley Tisdale plays the preppy and girly Savannah Monroe. She’s the captain of the Hellcats and full of pep! She likes to wear her school colors, gold jewelry, floral prints, girly colors like pink and purple, and anything pretty. On the new TV series Hellcats (on The CW) Aly Michalka plays Marti Perkins. She’s a seriously edge, hip character with a bit of a tomboy streak. As you know, we’re now taking requests for our style features (TV character, Celebrity or Fairy Tale Character.) Beverly, age 37, wrote to us about Jane Rizzoli of the TNT show Rizzoli & Isles. On the show, she’s played by Angie Harmon. We’ve covered Rizzoli’s style once before, which Beverly had seen. But she wanted a little more focus on Rizzoli’s tops, which she noted were “simple, but not plain.” Essentially she wanted some notes on finding great tops that weren’t just a t-shirt, but weren’t overly fancy. And I can totally jive with that. Casual luxury (or casual luxe OR every day glamor…whatever you want to call it) is totally my thing.

It’s Jane Rizzoli’s thing because hey, she’s in a profession where she can’t show up wearing pajamas (as a writer, I can sometimes) but she’s a sporty tomboy. Ergo, she wears something that’s nice, but not prissy or full of lace and complicated straps.

So, what we want to do is avoid basic cotton T-shirts. There’s not too much special about them and they scream “totally casual.” However, cotton BLENDS, or with special necklines and details are another matter all together.

Rizzoli does a LOT of layering of simple, solid colored tops under blazers. If you don’t have to go that fancy, try an open cardigan.

I went to these sites/online stores: Zappos (great selection of everything especially for Three Dots tops and Pure and Simple tops), Anne Taylor, The Gap (dismissed most everything there, though), Dillards, Edie Bauer and Michael Stars.

Rizzoli and Isles Fashion:

Three Dots 1×1 Cotton Modal Cowl Neck I selected this shirt because Three Dots does casual luxe very well. The tagline to this shirt is, “who says a t-shirt can’t be elegant?” Which is perfect for our mission! The cowl neck gives it a little interest, and you can pick any color you want. I thought blue was a nice neutral with a tiny bit of pop. And all of the reviews are positive on the site.

Scoopneck Shirt with Charmeuse Trim So, this is cotton but it has a wonderful layered satin trim along the scoop neckline. And the trim is ragged, so it’s not too girlish or “perfect.” I like the light amethyst color the most, but the plum is also very pretty.

Pure & Simple Long Tank Top w/ Banded Hem I’ve fallen in love with this top, and I’d want it in all three colors. It’s so versatile. This is a simple (it’s in the brand name!) top, but the detail is all in the construction. It’s made of a stretchy rayon material.

Gathered cap-sleeve shirt Cap sleeves are great if you are afraid to wear a tank, or if you like to layer clothing. Some simple draping action makes this an interesting, polished-looking top. (This pleated cap sleeve top is a little more simple.)

Gianni Bini “Addison” Knit Top Again, this is a simple top that’s also conservative. This is a  polyester/rayon/spandex blend. The Gianni Bini “Remma” Knit Top also caught my eye.

(Not pictured) From Eddie Bauer I found a Gathered Scoop Neck and a Draped Scoop Neck that I liked. Lots of colors, plus sizes available, and decent prices. While I was at that site I came across the Christine Cotton Jacket which I really love. I don’t think it’s “Jane Rizzoli” but it’s definitely “me.”

Luxe Slub Long Sleeve Button Down Top Rizzoli sometimes wears plain button downs, it’s easy and can be comfortable if you get the right kind. This particular one isn’t too fitted. It has a relaxed feel with the two front pockets, but details like the fabric covered buttons dress it up a bit. Michael Stars does a lot of casual things, so this is kind of dressy-casual for them. This is made out of slub and that’s a knit that is a little uneven and raw. Ergo, casual!

Are you ready to read about some of the best lotions for dry skin? Uh, YEA YOU ARE. Dry skin is awful! Yuck.

I have a new favorite daily routine. And it involves a piece of wisdom that can be used by anyone, anytime (unless you’re camping and have no access to a shower, or you’re trapped on an island like on Lost - then you’ll have to find other ways to bliss.) After you shower, your skin’s pores open up (warm water opens things, cold water closes the pores) and your skin is just so much more susceptible to soaking up nutrients. This is why you should always apply lotion right after a shower or washing your face. I always cover my target areas with lotion after a shower. Those areas are my face, hands, elbows/arms and feet/ankles. Those are the areas I care about the most and tend to get dry without daily TLC. (My skin is pre-disposed to be dry, I think! Which is why I think natural skin care product reviews are important to share. Especially when they give you positive results. Natural is always better!)

So, I mentioned a routine. I received some products from Belly Buttons and Babies :  Calming Baby Massage Lotion, Lavender Chamomile Baby Body Wash/Shampoo and the Orange Blossom Soothing Nursing Cream.

The Lavender Chamomile Baby Body wash is great for laying under the lotion. It has a beautiful, clean scent just like the lotion and it helps create a spa-like mood for your own, boring (I’m assuming) bathroom and shower. It’s the power of the lavender scent (which is great in general, but Belly Buttons and Babies has a particular lavender scent all its own) and knowing – feeling – that you’re using a high quality product.

Use this pure and gentle foaming wash & shampoo for bathing babies and children. Certified organic essential oils work to relax baby and help soothe and care for delicate skin.

After I shower the Lavender Chamomile Body Wash I apply my (always oil-free) face lotion and then go sit in a big chair in front of the TV. If I have time, I turn on Netflix with my Wii as I’m re-watching Weeds (great show, and I heart Justin Kirk and Mary-Louise Parker SO much!) The idea is that I want to be immobile for at least five minutes – not walking all around is possible. Then I apply some of this great lotion that they sent. One of which, isn’t so much a lotion but can work as one. You’ll laugh if I tell you what it is… and you know I’m going to tell you!

The scents are beautiful. And unless I plan to wear perfume on a certain day, I always like to wear scented lotion. Your mind is very aware of scents, and it influences your mood. (Aromatherapy is very real!) So, once I’m calmed down with a refreshing shower, I massage lotion onto my feet, ankles, hands, elbows and arms. (Sometimes my legs.) And then I sit there, and I smell the delicious soothing scent of the lotion and feel very feeling a sense of weird tranquility (that I very much enjoy.)

Taking care of my skin is important to me – not just because I want it to look good, but because I am hyper-aware of how my skin feels. If my elbows because rough, elephant elbows (I’m sure you’ve heard that phrase before!) then I’m unhappy. The same goes for my feet. If they’re rough, then I’m annoyed. And this brand makes products that really do help smooth things.

The Calming Baby Massage Lotion is safe for babies – but you can use it on yourself, too.  And I treat my skin like a baby, so I wanted to give it a try. My worry was maybe it would be too fragile of a lotion to work on my skin very well. But I was wrong. I requested this because the scent is LAVENDER – and I am a major, major fan of the calming scent of lavender. And the scent with this massage lotion is fresh, clean, and not overpowering at all. It smells beautiful. I had also been concerned the lotion wouldn’t work because when you see the consistency, it’s thin. But surprisingly, it works very well. It’s not greasy in the least.You might not be able to order from the kid’s menu, but you can certainly take advantage of their skin care secrets! If you have a baby, they’ll adore the massage and love the graceful scent that lingers on them as they restfully sleep. (This could possibly make your baby sleep more, since scent is a very powerful trigger to your mind!) What is the best baby lotion? I’d say this is definitely a contender.

Soothing, relaxing creamy massage lotion for your baby. Ideal to use after bath time, just before bed. Only baby safe essential oils have been used in this formulation. May be used on older children too! Studies have shown that babies who receive regular massage sleep more soundly than those who don’t. Moms and dads can use this massage lotion when they need some relaxing time together. Safe for the whole family.  This product also features calendula oil to soothe the delicate skin of mothers and babies.

I don’t care if this nursing cream is for sore nipples. It works wonders on your skin ANYWHERE! And if you ever wanted to moisturize your breast region, normal lotion isn’t really powerful enough. The scent of the Orange Blossom Cream is great because it’s not strong like a lot of citrus cents are. It’s toned down to a lovely smell. I feel very pampered after I used this – and I use it just like lotion on my feet, elbows, hands, etc.

Belly Buttons & Babies™ Soothing Nursing Cream is made using the safest essential oils for nursing mothers and helps in keeping the breasts supple and prevent stretch marks.

In honor of the name of the brand, I even put a small dollop over my belly button region and massaged it in. It felt great! Haha! If you have kids, this brand has great products to keep around the house which are safe for younger kids to grab for if they want to use what Mommy uses.

And here’s the big sticking point about these Belly Buttons and Babies products: after three days of using the Massage Lotion and Soothing Nursing Cream my major problem skin areas – elbows and ankles were DRAMATICALLY less rough and much more smooth. I alternated what I used, and I put it on in after a shower and then a little before bed since I sleep with a fan on myself. Any lotion that can really work on my stupid dry elbows is a GODSEND. I don’t care if one of the products is meant for nipples! My nipples wish they were as lucky as my elbows are! … Er. Well, you know what I meant. I am frankly, excited to find another rarity in the beauty world: lotion that really works to moisturize elbows and ankles. This is a find for some of the best lotions for dry skin.
