Episode 65: Christmas Special

This year Lee Maguire joins us, and, like Magi of geek, the three of us bear anecdotes of obscure science fiction references and unexpected short-lived celebrity. The snacks don't disappoint, either. If you want to munch along at home for the 'full body experience', you will need: Haribo Jelicons, Walkers Sensations Szechuan Pepper peanuts, The Fantastic Fox's 'Magnificos' chilli & lime flavour, and Heston's spiced shortcrust mince pies from Waitrose. Episode 62: Dr Eben Upton and the Raspberry Pi

We were slumbering, as usual, in our misty Shift Run Stop cryo-pods, when through the liquid nitrogen we heard it: the unmistakable call of a Raspberry Pi in the wild. So here we are again, temporarily reanimated for a very special and rare chat with credit-card sized computer creator, Eben Upton. As Eben reflects on a trajectory that began with writing mouse drivers for BBC Micros and ended with being technical director at Broadcom, we try very hard not to drop his baby on the floor.

And in a slightly windier location, human snack dispenser Lee Maguire delivers a fresh range of geek-friendly treats – among them Quinn Norton from Wired magazine. Your hosts try to invent a fool-proof method for measuring the size of supermarkets, pool satellite dish trivia, open some gifts from a listener and more. The horror aficionado joined us on his only night off from the West End hit Ghost Stories, which he wrote and stars in - though you might also remember his turn as the deliciously aggressive Patrick in Charlie Brooker's zombie satire Dead Set. He's a magician too, and for the past decade has worked closely with Derren Brown.

Most recently, the pair co-created the three-part hiking comedy The Great Outdoors, which was acclaimed for its funny jokes and brilliant cast including Mark Heap, Katherine Parkinson and Ruth Jones. He's a performer too, and has been in various things you like, including The IT Crowd and Spaced. This week we hear about all that, plus hiker geeks, Hyperdrive and Animal Crossing.

That rustling noise you hear? Why, it's our mercurial snacks expert Dave, returning with a cornucopia of weird trans-seasonal treats from the bargain bin of hell.

Episode 34: Danny O’Brien

It was only a matter of time before we had this Original Internet Celeb on the show. Danny O'Brien is of course Dave's former partner in crime from the world-famous geek newsletter NTK. He's been involved with the EFF, the ORG and loads of other stuff in recent years but has never forgotten his early internet roots. Now a long-term resident of California, we catch up with the digital Robin Hood on a brief visit to the UK.

Incidentally, when we emailed Danny to invite him on the show we told him we expect it to be like when Scotty showed up unexpectedly on Star Trek TNG. The experienced engineer has some ideas about how things should be run which caused a bit of friction down in Engineering, but Geordie eventually had to admit that the old man knew what he was doing and could even teach him a thing or two. Danny replied saying he thought it'd be more like when Jamie returned to Doctor Who wearing a kilt, and no one could remember who he was.

"They stole our revolution, now we're stealing it back." And now they're letting us rent it off them for 41 minutes. Vive la revolution!

A summery episode this week, as a guitar-wielding Mark "MJ" Hibbett swings by to serenade us in the sunshine, and we snack on Southwold's finest seaside fare.

Mark is responsible for the world's first internet hit, the gloriously nostalgic vintage computing paean Hey Hey 16K ("What does that get you today?") plus loads of other brilliant songs AND a new rock musical about dinosaurs and robots called Dinosaur Planet.

Everything about that paragraph was good.

Poor Roo has been ill (watching the entire Alien/Predator franchise - more of which in the next episode), but Dave and Leila have been to a radio rally in Luton, where some old computer books and a few Spectrum tapes were picked up with you in mind, gentle SRS listener. A rough and ready little episode this week, as our Roo - the edit smarts - has been off on a well-earned holiday (though Roofans relax: his past self does grace this episode - before he left we discussed Red Dead Redemption).

And while he was drinking in the Spanish sunshine, Leila and Dave were drinking in the complimentary wine at the premier of the BCS's Information Pioneers campaign, which aims to highlight the trailblazers of the information age through a series of films and a public appeal to vote for your favourite. Our guest this week has been keeping a watchful eye on the Large Hadron Collider since it booted up again in March, but luckily he's very well-qualified. In fact, Jon is a Professor of Physics at UCL and via the ATLAS experiment, pushes the boundaries of so-called science over at CERN on a regular basis. Well, we don't know much about science, but we know what we like, and it was a joy to learn about everything from the mystery of mass to the mystery of the LHC rap.

Over in parallel dimension, we review chocolates with unexpected mass and discuss the space-time implications of discussing the Time Traveler Convention on this podcast. And now we've just blogged about it, too. Oops.

Meet Catherine O'Flynn and Peter Fletcher. Cath's first novel, What Was Lost was set in a shopping centre much like the one where we did this interview. Husband Peter has been documenting his sneezes, and spills the beans (and elastic bands) on what it was like working as a postie.

What with magma dragons and volcano (shipping) forecasts, we've developed quite a thing for vulcanology lately, so imagine our excitement when Eyjafjallajoekull spewed forth this week. Is it safe to go outside? Will we ever eat bananas again? Did we ever eat them before? For an exclusive breakdown of the situation, we turn to volcano enthusiast and friend of the show, Dr Ralph Harrington.

Intrepid Dave Green reports from Dorkbot #68, before joining us at a swanky West London bar for some renegade snacking inbetween disapproving glances from the waiter. With Ada Lovelace Day coming up very soon, Sydney tells us about the great lady herself, her struggles and achievements, and her unique relationship with Difference Engine-inventing eccentric Charles Babbage.

You might recognise Zeb's voice from Radio 4 news, continuity announcements and the iconic Shipping Forecast. He's also very funny and, unexpectedly, looks like he should be in a boyband. We also hear about Roo's hobbity holiday in the New Forest and Leila's trip to Decode Lab at the V&A.

Dave comes back from India loaded up with imported Turkish snacks, Roo invents a system for randomly allocating seats at any future Shift Run Stop party, and an address in an old comic leads Leila to the doorstep of the former Dennis the Menace fanclub.

Episode 14: Duncan Gough

We saw Duncan at Playful 09 and were instantly hooked by his idea that dramatic storytelling and video games could merge in a new interactive concept called "Fictive Worlds". Duncan also shares his experience of developing the first PMOG (Passively Multiplayer Online Game), The Nethernet, and learning to program in COBOL (without a computer!) Episode 9: Sarah Angliss and Paul B Davis

This week we were really honoured to talk to two fantastically clever artists who make use of technology in their work. Artist/performer Sarah Angliss has been researching the Uncanny Valley, and we hear about some of the eerie musical experiences she has created, for the Adam Curtis "It Felt Like A Kiss" piece and elsewhere. Sarah plays everything from the piano to the theramin and frequently makes use of automata and robots in her witty and evocative shows.

Paul B Davis is an artist and lecturer at Goldsmiths, well-known for his work with computer art/music collective Beige, particularly NES cartridge hacking. Beige were among the first to record audio data for 8-bit computers onto a vinyl music LP - "vinyl for software distribution". Both classically-trained musicians, both drawn to a historical aesthetic that goes beyond simple nostalgia, and both fascinated by the technical and creative process of art-making, Paul and Sarah find they have much in common.

Episode 8: Ariane Sherine, Samuel Preston and Alex Preston

This week's episode was tremendous fun. Journalist and comedy writer Ariane Sherine tells us about her new book which features original pieces by everyone from Richard Dawkins to Josie Long. Ariane's now-familiar slogan "There is probably no God, now stop worrying and enjoy your life" was first displayed on London buses in 2008, after thousands joined her campaign to match religious advertising with an atheist message. We also learn about her TV comedy writing career, working with Seinfeld and Larry Sanders producer Fred Barron.

You might be surprised that trendy young thing Samuel Preston ("Preston", formerly of The Ordinary Boys and Celebrity Big Brother) is a big retrogamer and Jim Henson fan. We welcome Samuel's brother Alex too, whose fascinating-looking and extremely timely debut novel "This Bleeding City" will be published by Faber in March. Both Prestons are very gifted writers, and we strongly recommend checking out their websites, below.

In episode three we meet that royalty of the comedy and music worlds, lovely David Quantick and ask him about Doctor Who, Morrissey and making the world's first internet sitcom. We hang out at Playful 2009 and talk to James Bridle about his noughts and crosses calculating matchboxes. We chat to internet personality Robert Brook, a nice man in a suit who worked on the Hansard archives and therefore works for you, and hear his opinions on swearing. And we eat South African chocolate while SRS regular Dave Green tells us what it was like on the set of Micro Men, a recent BBC dramatisation of the Acorn/Sinclair wars. It's all free, of course, and it might make you smile.
