Shoe Deja Vu: Cat print shoes by BC Footwear and Miu Miu

BC Footwear pumps, $69.95 These shoes look nothing like Miu Miu: not even a little bit. The PRINT on the shoes, however, is VERY Miu Miu: in fact, it’s so similar to the designer brand’s famous cat pumps from a couple of years ago that I actually did a double-take when I saw it pop up again at Zappos. Here are the Miu Miu shoes: I remember back when these were released, numerous other brands jumped right on the cat-print bandwagon, and released their own versions of shoes with cats, or other animals, on the uppers. Most of those, however, were “inspired” by Miu Miu in the true sense of the word. BC Footwear’s cat print, though, is SO identical to Miu Miu’s that it almost seems like it must have come from the same bolt of fabric or something: the shoes themselves are as different as can be, but those kitties are very, very familiar! I guess the good news here is that if you loved the print, but couldn’t afford the shoes, the first time it was available, you now have a second chance, albeit with a different style of shoe. What do you think of these?

Mel heart-front heels in blue and red

Mel heart pumps, $74.99 The second I laid eyes on these shoes, I thought how much they reminded me of the very first collection of Vivienne Westwood for Melissa ‘Lady Dragon’ shoes. The baby blue and red shoes from that line have always been one of the “ones that got away” for me: I absolutely loved the colour combination, and really wish I’d bought a pair when they were released, but c’est la vie! Unsurprisingly, then, these shoes are actually by the same brand: Mel is Melissa’s slightly lower-priced diffusion line, and these obviously draw inspiration from the original Lady Dragons, both in terms of the colours and the hearts. The shape, meanwhile, is the one used on Melissa’s “Skyscraper” pumps, which I’m sure fans of the brand will be familiar with. So, what do you think of these? My guess is that if you loved the Lady Dragons you’ll at least like these, although they lack the elegance of the peep toe style. (For most people, I think the main attraction of the Lady Dragon shoe is the embellishment on the toes, but I also think the narrow shape of the shoe underneath is very flattering, and lovely in its own right.) If you’re in the camp which shudders at the very thought of plastic shoes, however, you’ll probably be less enamoured with these, and I definitely think they’ll be harder to wear than their peep-toed sister, mostly because they look a little bit like toys – or is ...

Studded flat sandals from Zara

Zara sandals, £39.99 I don’t like flat sandals. I know many people consider them to be a summer staple, but any pair I try on always instantly remind me of the kind of sandals I’d have worn as a little girl, and go straight back on the shelf. They may be comfortable, and great for hot days, but I think I’ll stick to ballet flats and wedges and leave the sandals to those of you who can really do them justice. If I WAS going to buy a pair of flat sandals, however, these are the ones I’d go for. There’s nothing childish about the gold studs that cover the uppers, and the nude colour would make them very easy to wear. In fact, despite being a category of shoe that I’ve always more or less ignored in the past, I have to admit that I can actually see myself wearing these: maybe not frequently, exactly, but I’d definitely be willing to give them a go: who knows, I might even come to love them! Jerome C. Rousseau lilac suede ‘Popp’ sandals

Jerome C. Rousseau sandals, £530 These shoes had me at the words “lilac suede”. It’s such a gorgeous colour, and one that’s fairly unusual when it comes to shoes, so almost anything in this particular colour would warrant a second look from me. In this case, that second look simply served to confirm what I already knew: that Jerome C. Rousseau is fast becoming one of my favourite footwear brands, with each pair of shoes I come across even more fabulous than the last. In addition to the stand-out colour, these sandals also make great use of the crossover straps that have been popping up here, there and everywhere this season. It’s a really nice feature, which helps make the shoe seem both more interesting and more delicate, somehow. Naturally, of course, shoes like this don’t come cheap, and at £530, these will have to remain in the “don’t even think about it” category for me. LKBennett Pacific Patent Leather Brogued Bow Platform Shoe

LK Bennett ‘Pacific’, £195 I just can’t get enough of this baby blue colour right now. Whether it be a dress, a sweater, a shoe, or anything else for that matter, if it comes in this colour, I’m probably going to want it. That’s definitely the case with LK Bennett’s ‘Pacific’ slingbacks, but in this case it’s not just the colour that’s attracting me to them but, well, everything really. The shape is simple and lovely, the heel is just the right height (plus there’s a little covered platform, to make it feel shorter), and as for the bow, well, brogue detailing has never been my favourite thing in the world, but on these shoes, I find it absolutely adorable, and just the right touch to make them stand out. Dolcis floral print platform pumps

Dolcis platforms, £35 This is the second pair of floral-print shoes I’ve shown you today, so while the weather may not be exactly Spring-like here in the UK, at least the footwear is! These Dolcis platforms are a little more typical than the Dune slingbacks I featured earlier today, and have fabric uppers and a concealed platform. I have a pair of floral platforms in a similar colour scheme (although with a different print), and I find that they go with most things, and are a really easy way to add a summery touch to anything I choose to wear them with. These shoes, meanwhile, are never going to be the most exciting heels you’ll ever own, but for £35, they could be a useful addition to your shoe closet, and if you’re not keen on the colours used in this particular print, there’s also a black version which might be more to your taste. Blink navy and white stripe platforms with bow

Blink platforms, £62 You know, I think there are almost too many pairs of stripe shoes around right now. Seriously, how is a shoeperhero supposed to resist them all? I HAD thought it would be fairly easy for me to resist the next pair of platform pumps that crossed by radar. The style is, after all, starting to look a little less contemporary now that shoes with “regular” soles have taken over again, and even if it wasn’t, it’s not like I don’t have enough pairs of platforms already. I don’t have these ones, though. And these ones check all of my boxes for the perfect “nautical” pump, with their navy and white stripes, their shiny red stiletto heel, and that generously-sized bow on the toe. As if all of that wasn’t enough, these shoes also occupy that very dangerous price range which is cheap enough to be affordable, but still high enough that I’d had have a hard time justifying it when I’m SUPPOSED to be saving up for a new house. I’m going to do my very best to try to forget I ever saw these shoes once I’ve hit the “publish” button on this post. Dune ‘Dearest’ metallic floral print slingbacks

Dune ‘Dearest‘, £89 I’ve been really impressed by Dune’s Spring/Summer collection this year, as you might have guessed from the frequency of the brand’s appearance here. At a time when a lot of shoes are starting to feel a bit “samey” (Single-strap sandals, for instance, are hugely popular right now, but there’s only so much you can do with them before they all start to blend into each other!), Dune have managed to keep things fresh and interesting, and that’s definitely the case with these ‘Dearest’ slingacks. Floral print shoes are, of course, nothing new (especially at this time of year), but I think this might be the first time I’ve seen a metallic pair. It’s a combination that sounds like it shouldn’t really work, but I actually think the silver upper makes these slingbacks really special. A non-metallic shade would still have looked good, but the silver backdrop to the floral upper really dresses these up, and gives them a subtle sheen which is really pretty. These have a very delicate feel to them, and would be perfect for something like a summer wedding: you can’t go wrong with a good ol’ floral print in that kind of situation! Buy them

Moda in Pelle ‘Delightful’ two-tone peep toes

Moda in Pelle, £69.95 If you’re going to name a shoe something like “Delightful”, you have to be pretty confident that it’s going to live up to its reputation. Luckily for Moda in Pelle, I don’t think they have anything to worry about with these little two-tone peep toes: they’re ‘Delightful’ by name, and I think they’re rather delightful by nature too, don’t you? These come in three different colourways: the pink and turquoise versions are shown above, and there’s also a beige with black trim, if you’re going for a more sophisticated feel. Of all of these, I think the pink version is my favourite: I like the contrast of the bold colour against the white heel and trim, and think it has a slightly fresher feel than the turquoise and tan. These have a 4.28″ heel, and a nice, slightly vintage feel about them which always goes down well with me. What do you think of them? Buy them

Schuh ‘Dirty Dancing’ polka dot bow heels

Schuh ‘Dirty Dancing’, £35 Polka dots and bows? Navy and red? Those are two combinations that almost always render a pair of shoes irresistible to me, as I’m sure you already know, if you’ve been reading here for a while. These shoes, however, didn’t quite do it. Oh, I love the colours and I love the dots – you can pretty much take that as read. When you add the mid-height heel, the ankle strap and the giant bow, though, I think you end up with a shoe which is a little too cartoonish for its own good: or maybe just too cartoonish to be a perfect fit for my closet. That’s not to say these won’t be a great fit for yours, though, and if you’re a fan of mid-height heels, then these shoes offer yet another opportunity to buy a pair that actually look fun, rather than frumpy. These are named after the movie Dirty Dancing, and the shape does remind me of a classic dance shoe, so I’m sure these would be comfortable if you wanted to take them out for a night of dancing, “dirty” or otherwise! If you like the shape but not the print, meanwhile, you might be interested to know that these also come in plain black, and you can find them at Schuh. Buy them
