Primary and Secondary Education Minister Kimmane Ratnakar said the state government is considering a proposal to distribute shoes to children studying in government schools on the lines of Tamil Nadu government.

He told reporters here on Thursday that the Department has sought details from the TN government on the cost involved in distributing shoes to schoolchildren.

“We will work out the cost involved in the project and request CM Siddaramaiah to okay the proposal,” he said.

Ratnakar said the response to his idea of establishing model schools in headquarters of each gram panchayat and providing them with facilities on par with private institutions received good response.

According to him, in Karnataka, the teacher to student ratio varies from one region to another. The government is planning a merger of schools where students are less.

The government also wants to provide pick-up and drop facilities to attract students to government schools.

“I will be visiting Mumbai-Karnataka and Hyderabad-Karnataka regions after the budget session to study the ground reality. This will give an insight to the problems,” Ratnakar added.

'Uniforms to be Ready by May'

Rathnakar on Thursday lashed out at officials of his department for failing to supply books and uniforms to government school children on time.

The minister said that to avoid delay in the distribution of uniforms and textbooks from the next academic year, he has instructed the officials concerned to complete the tender process by September 30

“As of now, the tender is invited in the month of March and the entire process is completed by October. I don’t understand the reason for this. Schools start in June and we have to be ready with all this for our children by the first week of May next year onwards,” he said.

About 37.56 lakh sets of uniforms and lakhs of notebooks are supplied to government schools through Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan every year.

Making specific pointers to S R Umashankar, commissioner for public instruction, Rathnakar said all files pending for more than five years should be either disposed of or sent to him for clearance.

The minister inaugurated six new classrooms at Veerabhadranagar Government Higher Primary School, which was adopted by PES Group of Institutions.

As a kid Jonathan Davies grew up watching Brian O'Driscoll and aspired to play like him. Little did he guess that, one day, he would be preparing to wear O'Driscoll's No13 jersey and talking to a room of journalists about his Lions inclusion at the expense of his hero. The temptation to keep a straight face and reply: "Brian Who?" to the inevitable questions must have been overwhelming.

As he contemplated the rows of digital recorders in front of him and waited for the television broadcasters to connect their live feed the 25-year-old Davies was obviously under strict instructions to say nothing mischievous.

Those hoping for something indiscreet – "The old bloke had it coming" or "Frankly, I reckon there should be more Welsh boys in the team" – were never going to be rewarded. If he is as steadfast on the field this weekend, Warren Gatland's faith will have been amply rewarded.

Even Davies the Diplomat, though, could not entirely gloss over the BOD-sized elephant in the basement room of the Royal Automobile Club of Australia, just up the street from Sydney Opera House. To say the former is filling a sizeable pair of boots is the tour's biggest understatement, with the added complication that the jilted Irish star has been among his room-mates on this trip. O'Driscoll's wife, Amy, and their baby daughter have arrived; you can bet Davies prays for an empty corridor every time his lift door opens.

Such is the continuing fallout from the O'Driscoll axing that even some of the Lions support staff are still wearing the glazed expressions of people who cannot quite believe the news. How tough it must be for Davies to block out the cacophony of noises off and concentrate on his job, aware the scrutiny of the whole world is on him. It is not his fault but, suddenly, this is the biggest game of his life, just as it is Gatland's.

There is no hiding the fact that O'Driscoll has been deeply disappointed by his omission. Manu Tuilagi, a slightly less measured media operator, confirmed as much. "I spoke to him and he said he was pretty gutted not to be included," the Leicester centre said. Even Davies hinted the selection had rocked the camp. "I don't know whether everyone was shocked or not but for the boys not involved it is a huge disappointment. What he [O'Driscoll] has achieved in the game, no other might do. He has been a great player. He might not like me saying it but I've grown up watching him play. I have admired his work and to have been able to play with him was very special. I have admiration for the man and a lot of respect."

The good news for the Lions is that Davies, among the most consistent players on this trip, is not about to sit back and await unflattering comparisons between himself and the world's most-capped centre. "I did expect a few questions," he said. "I think that shows how great a player Brian is. But I have to make sure I prepare myself for a Test match and that is what I will be doing."

His fine performance against the Waratahs in this city almost three weeks ago suggested he is maturing as a top-class footballer. "That's one of the things I've worked on in the last few years: making sure that when the pressure is on you deliver. It is slowly coming together and I am reasonably pleased with my form but I want to keep pushing myself forward," he said

It might also not be universally appreciated outside Wales that the England-born Davies and Jamie Roberts are the most-capped Wales centre partnership of all time, having overtaken the illustrious duo of Steve Fenwick and Ray Gravell. Davies has 36 Wales caps and is poised to start his third successive Test for the Lions; not bad for a supposed understudy.

The Llanelli Scarlet has also been ever-present in Wales's Six Nations successes of 2012 and 2013 and appears to enjoy the big occasion. "It's about delivering under pressure and that's what we want to do on Saturday. We can't fear it, we have to go out and embrace it and do the job … it's do or die on Saturday."

Fans of Texas women’s rights champion Wendy Davis have commandeered Amazon’s review pages to turn her running shoes into a political force.

Davis, a state senator, wore the $114.99 pinky red Mizuno Wave Rider 16 running shoes for her more than 10-hour filibuster this week that effectively stalled legislation to outlaw abortion in the state.

“Men, do not try these on!” wrote Joshua Jones.

“I tried on a pair at the local mall and suddenly Texas Republicans started telling me what to do with my genitals. They started explaining reproduction to me like I was a seventh grader. Unfortunately, being male, I had no way to shut the whole thing down.”

Wrote M. Black: “The next time you have to spend 13 hours on your feet without food, water or bathroom breaks, this is the shoe for you. Guaranteed to outrun patriarchy on race day.”

More than 3,200 people “found the review helpful.”

Bryan Berry’s review said he bought a pair in pink with a green stripe.

“I will put them on my feet when I need to run far. When I am tired, I will ask myself: WWWD?! Then I will keep running.”

“These are the perfect shoes for standing your ground against misogyny, ignorance, and deliberate stupidity,” said Laura L. Orem.

“The cushioning will support you through marathons or filibusters, and the jazzy pink color will remind your opponents that you have style as well as substance.”

E.B. from California added her review: “Choice in shoes is necessary in today’s world, even if you don’t like someone else’s style.”

“Bad for families,” Al Maginnes called the shoes his wife bought.

“Letting her get these shoes was a huge mistake. Suddenly she insists that one child is enough for us and now she’s reading books instead of cleaning the house and having my dinner ready when I get home. She says she doesn’t need to ask me who to vote for anymore and told me to clean my own guns.”

Sporting goods maker Mizuno had sent the senator a tweet of support on Wednesday, the morning after Davis’s marathon:

“@WendyDavisTexas: 26.2 miles or 13-hour filibuster, we are glad our shoes could be there to provide you the support you need when you need it.”

Advertising Age reported the shoes have become the second-best selling women’s running shoe on Amazon this week.

It wasn’t until James Carnes saw a rough sketch of a strange running shoe--the sole dotted with rounded, angled blades--that he thought the concept would actually work. “We’re taking a rigid and stiff material and making it look soft and elegant,” says Carnes, the head of global design for Adidas. “That’s hard. This was something we always wanted but didn’t think we could get.”

It took a few years, but that drawing is now a shoe. Yesterday, Adidas launched the Springblade, which goes on sale August 1. At $180, it’s the company’s most expensive running shoe. It’s also one of its most high-tech footware products. The 16 blades, strips of high-tech polymer that resemble the outstretched legs of a cheetah in full stride, are designed to work like individual springs. When they bounce back, unlike the soles of other shoes claiming similar properties, Carnes says, they propel a runner forward. Adidas is hoping that the distinctive blades become not only a staple of its running shoes but a stylish silhouette for everyday models as well.

The company could certainly use a hit running shoe. In May, Adidas ranked fourth in the crowded category, with 7.4% market share (down from 8.2% last year), compared to Nike’s estimated 43%. Penetrating that dominance remains a challenge, but recent advances in computer-assisted design and plastics are allowing Adidas and others to introduce new designs and technology, improving their chances of getting noticed and winning converts. Earlier this year, we explored Reebok’s approach, a polarizing design called the ATV 19+. Its oversized nodules were inspired by the knobby wheels on an all-terrain vehicle and built for off-road running, a new category Reebok hopes to build.

Engineers at Adidas have been working on shoes that exploit a runner’s energy at least since the early 1990s, Carnes says. To that end, they’re obsessed with race cars--Formula 1, since Adidas is based in Germany (the U.S. headquarters is in Portland). “This project comes out of looking at what happens to the energy a race car uses when it has to go around a corner,” Carnes says. “Some of our brainy engineers started to think about how to harness the energy you push into a shoe when you land and not only re-use it but give it a specific direction.”

Instead of adding a stiff flexing material to the mid-sole, which Adidas and others have done, the researchers broke the sole into individual pieces, hard-plastic spring blades. They’re longer than cleats, offer more give, and they’re positioned at a front-to-back angle. “Typically, if you get any energy coming back from the landing impact in a shoe, it goes back up,” says Carnes. “This is designed so that when you push down, the blades help propel you forward.”

The blades act like a tight suspension system, but researchers knew no one would buy shoes that felt rigid. They had to be high-performance and comfortable. Adidas wanted that elusive hybrid, the seemingly impossible marriage of a Formula-1 car and a 1950s Cadillac (“the pinnacle of comfort,” Carnes says). Except in shoes. The development team sent test models to runners in Germany, the United States, and Asia who logged thousands of miles and provided feedback.

Meanwhile, Carnes wrestled with how to make the radical new look more appealing. How to tell the technical story through design. “We wanted to communicate this idea of propulsion and convey that your foot is floating above the ground,” he says. So his team rounded the edges of the blades, giving them a softer appearance, and capped them with colorful tips, a playful touch. And because the rest of the spring is an almost translucent material, the shoe offers a hint of hovering above the ground. In short, Carnes celebrated the blades.

“Like with any good new thing, there’s an emotional reaction,” he says. “That should be something familiar and a little bit provocative.”

You must have good quality and durable tennis shoes to play tennis. Ordinary shoes are unable to provide the same level of comfort and grip of the ground to the player while playing tennis. As a result, they get injured and may have to take rest for weeks to come. The most common injury that players suffer while playing tennis is twisting or straining of the ankle and it hurts badly. Therefore, proper tennis footwear must be bought rather than normal athletic shoes to avoid getting injuries and stay in top form. While the quality and durability of specialized tennis shoes is higher than normal shoes, they are also a bit costly as compared to average athletic shoes.

There are a lot of brands that make tennis footwear but the amount of comfort and support that Adidas or Nike tennis shoes provide is unmatchable. This is because these brands have done many researches and have come up with exactly what people need out of tennis shoes. Adidas and Nike have been the top brand for tennis footwear for many years and you can find these shoes at any shoe stores and also in outlet stores of these brands all around the world. Both these shoes are popular because of their high quality and durability and because of the reason that Adidas and Nike sponsor big sports events and players round the year.

Adidas and Nike are also the favorite brand of many great athletes from different parts of the world. Tennis requires a lot of strength as your legs have to bear the stress for hours, especially on the grass court. That is why you have to buy the best tennis footwear to give your best performance in the game. The price of tennis shoes may increase with the quality but you cannot compromise on your health. Tennis shoes for men and women are also different. Adidas and Nike are the best manufacturers of tennis footwear for men and women in the market.

There is no doubt in that Adidas has always been the house brand for sports products and accessories and most commonly known around the world. Adidas is also the top producer of tennis footwear and their shoes usually cost $90 or more. Nike has released Air Force shoes that are grabbing much attention within the sports of tennis.

Another high quality and reputable brand that manufacturers sports shoes is K-Swiss. Tennis footwear of this brand usually come in several different categories such as light weight shoes, ankle support shoes, shoes for clay court, maximum durable shoes and best value shoes etc. They also manufacture special shoes for people who have narrow or wide feet.

Women love stylish shoes and companies manufacture tennis footwear that look nice and stylish to the women's market. Puma is another great brand for tennis shoes and also the signature brand for many women tennis stars. Puma has been trying hard to make a mark in the sports shoe market in general and tennis shoe market in particular.

Squash is a game that will require strenuous feet and ankle motions. The player must be extremely flexible, agile, with fast reflexes and fluid movements. For that reason, special shoes are needed to ensure their flexible grip on the floor without restricting the individual's motions, and player's protection from the damage resulting from otherwise. There are lots of brands which create squash shoes for Squash players, but how to pick which brand, and further, which kind of shoe array will suit a player? Let's look closer into this challenge and try to aid you choose which are the best squash shoes for you.

You should start by examining your own shoe size. The proportion you need to look out for is simple: for those who have slim ankles, don't select larger shoes for they will certainly come loosened and impair your movements. People with healthy ankles, however, should not purchase a size that fits them too securely for this could cut-off the blood circulation to the foot, evolving into more serious medical problems. Your shoe has to be the right size, neither a size bigger nor a size smaller. Likewise, the toe size of the shoes needs to be exactly correlated to your own. Padding is an additional problem in terms of deciding on the shoes. It is said that the older you are (or the heavier) the greater cushioning in your shoes you would likely need.

What is good about them?

A few tips:

• You should not wear such shoes for whole day.

• If the heel is more than 2 inches high, it becomes uncomfortable.

• With high heels, take small steps.

• Select shoes that fit you well.

• If shoes are small, don't squeeze your feet into them. Similarly, bigger shoes are also difficult to wear.

• If you wear heels for a long time, then take care of your feet later on; and that involves blood circulation exercises. Take a bath for feet with light massage, as it will remove the tension from your feet.

• High heels can become harmful if they are not well proportioned, as they can cause blisters.

• Some women even can lose their balance due to such shoes, so you need some time to get familiar.

• It was also researched that pain in back and knees also happens because of high heels, as the center of gravity moves forward, making it hard to walk because you have to make more effort to walk with a straight back. Hence, the back suffers, causing the numbness of the feet or legs as well. Some women have also complained about leg cramps while sleeping, because when they wear high heels whole day, the leg muscles become stretched causing contraction when legs are not moving.

• According to doctors high heels brings many worries with them, though they make you elegant and stylish. So, before purchasing such shoes, think many times about your health.

• But, that doesn't mean that you should not wear high-heeled shoes; wear only good quality, comfortable shoes, and practice by walking in those shoes to check the comfort level.

All these tips will help you make your decision about buying such shoes.

There is no doubt about the fact that footwear help you protect your feet. At the same time, they give you style. When you have a good collection of shoes, you feel quite confident. You have shoes that are used for everyday activities. You might also prefer to wear different footwear or boots for playing some games.

Then it is quite possible that you also have some special shoes in collection for special occasions. However, when the collection is not well organized, you may feel lost in front of the footwear. Getting the right footwear from the collection may be quite time consuming. You can make use of some organizing ideas to make the collection useful and aesthetic. You can keep your footwear organized by keeping them on the basis of:

Color and Heel Size

It's a great idea for many fashion conscious people to organize their shoes on the basis of different colors. This can help you find the right color shoe for matching with your dress without spending a lot of time in front of your footwear collection. Anybody who has a look at your footwear organization system may find this system quite attractive.

At the same time, you may choose to shelve the shoes according to heel height. This way you will be able to choose any particular color and heel in the twinkling of your eye. It will help you save time and keep your footwear in a proper order.

Shoes for different Seasons

It is quite natural that many of your shoes are seasonal footwear. This feature can be exploited to organize your footwear in a convenient manner. In a particular season, you do not need all your collection to be placed at the front. So, you can put other pairs in the background. This saves space. The closet or wardrobe can showcase those footwear that are necessary for the current season while other pairs may be kept under the bed. You can also store the off-season footwear in some other convenient place.

This style of organization lets you avoid the mess of unnecessary shoes for one particular season. You will not see that some shoes are simply sitting in the closet for months without being used. However, when you place seasonal footwear in some other place, make sure the pairs are in some airtight containers so that dust or bugs cannot damage them.

Shoes for different occasions:

Your shoe selection may also include different shoes for different occasions. For example, you may have slippers for home use, party shoes for special occasions and boots for office use. This order of footwear will make it easy for you to choose your shoes and keep them back.

You can place your footwear in many different locations inside your house. You can keep them in baskets or some shoe shelves. Shoe selves are made of different materials ranging from low cost to expensive options. Canvas made organizers are quite cheap while wooden ones would be expensive. You can even get a customized shoe organizer according to your needs.

You may use any type of organizer to keep your shoes on the basis of color, type etc. Of course, you need to think about your collection type and budget before you get an organizer.

Getting the best Converse shoes pair that you were looking for is no more a major issue due to increasing numbers of stores selling original Converse. But like this brand, its users too have new dimensions to sensationalize the fashion trends. Putting on old looking Converse is a new trend that is gaining wide scale popularity among the youth community who loves to add earthy and edgy feel to their overall personality with denim jeans and shirts. Naturally, this style supports the personal get up for casual working days besides making the movement more comfortable than you feel in new shoes. Although each footwear from this brand is designed by the experts for immediate comfort but like any other brand, the used footwear from this brand also becomes more comfortable. So, should we wait for months to get the desired comfortable old look of shoes or can we get early?

Fashion enthusiasts have found some fantastic tricks to give the Converse shoes an older look without harming their quality, material or shortening their life. I met with numbers of youngsters to know the tricks they use to induce torn and old look to their new pair of shoes; and, this article shares some of proven tricks that I have tried personally.

First of all, do not make the new Converse look old just at very first day. Keep patience until you use it for at least 4-5 times. It will help the shoes to attain the shape according to particular shape of different feet parts and you will feel more comfortable. Now, if you are living near the coastal area enjoy some running on the beach. Friction of fine sand will bring natural fade effect.

After using 4-5 times, plan for cleaning. Yes, I am talking about the cleaning. Use a toothbrush and rub it wet on the shoes without use of any strong detergent. It is done not for cleaning any particular spot or dirt accumulation but it is done to spread even the spot or dust accumulation. When finished, use machine dryer for rinsing and mild drying. Put the partially wet shoes in sun light; sunlight effect will deliver a mild color fading effect.

If you want new Converse shoes look old with vintage class worn style, you may use sand paper also to rub the front edges and toes fronts; however, this trick needs extra care because extra rubbing may make the shoes skin weak. Applying used oil or greasy lotion also works good to deliver immediate old look but I do not like this trick. The reason is that the greasy spots become permanent and attract more dirt, so, you need frequent washing that reduces the life of shoes. Alternatively, you may use some grey or black color scratch pens to make line marks at sides. Now rub these color lines with a moistened cloth to deliver natural look.

At last, I would like to share the fact that old look of shoes doesn't seem perfect for any type of clothing; it is OK with the dressings for casual outing with friends but such shoes don’t seem good for formal use. So, before making your new Converse shoes look old- think twice.

Today, Converse has become more than just a footwear brand; it is well recognized designer class footwear in world. The unique style, exclusive prints, colorful palette and chunky white stereotypical laces make this footwear a fantastic collection for any fashion conscious user. Like any other designer footwear, this one too needs careful cleaning to retain its timeless glamorous appeal. And, you can wash Converse shoes self by following some DIY care tips.

The items you need to clean Converse shoes are easily available anywhere; most probably many of these may be in your store or in maintenance kits. The essentials that you need to make your Converse footwear like a new are: few plastic bags, white vinegar, stain stick, baking soda, old toothbrush, bleach, OxiClean or mild detergent and WD-40 (corrosion-spot remover). The cleaning process starts from removing the laces. These can be cleaned easily separately or can be replaced with new.

Now put the plastics bags inside the shoes to give the shoes a firm shape as they get when in feet. It helps to hold up original shape during and after washing. Now rub the stain stick all over inside corners and outside. To make the reach, you may use toothbrush. It softens the deposited dirt and grime. In case, you cannot arrange the stain stick, make a paste like mixture of baking soda and white vinegar as alternative and apply it all over with toothbrush. A mild drop of bleach can be added to the paste but avoid over dose of it; otherwise, it may fade up the colors. Many Converse users may advise for using bleach to get extra shining or cleaning but it may do bad rather than good if used excessively. So, if you are using bleaching powder, be cautious about the use and its concentration.

Now, we come to the second step of Converse shoes cleaning. Put the shoes with plastic bags inside in the washing machine. Do not use hot water or any hard detergent with bleaching powder; just mild detergent is enough. Add some heavy volumetric clothes in the tub; towels, bed sheet or blanket is good enough. These heavy clothes are added to reduce the impact power of shoes upon the walls of washing machine as well as to reduce the thump noise. Spray the starch before rinsing and drying. The most important tip is that never use machine dryer for fast drying. Dryer use may deliver a pale look to white Converse. Natural air drying is good enough; sun drying can be used for white shoes but avoid it for colored Converse shoes drying.

Yet, you have to do one more task to accomplish the professional cleaning of Converse shoes. Use WD40 to clean the scuff marks upon rubber and sole. Check the groves and clean the firm deposits with light scratching force but do not use sharp edged or pointed articles to scrap the deposits. This firm deposition can be avoided by timely cleaning. The whole process to clean Converse shoes takes around 30-40 minutes; and it is worth to enjoy the brand’s prestige for longer period.

The difference between a pair of $1,500 statement heels from Christian Louboutin and a pair of illuminated Back to the Future-themed $9,000 Nike Mag shoes is more than just $7,500.

While both are coveted by deep-pocketed celebrities, the sneakers are certainly more comfortable, far cooler and much more likely to inspire collectors across all ages and demographics.

That’s the idea behind Out of the Box: The Rise of Sneaker Culture, a new exhibition at the Bata Shoe Museum in Toronto. The footwear gallery, traditionally more likely to focus on high fashion than high tops, goes deep on the meaning and import of rubber-soled shoes in the show.

The exhibition features more than 130 early, rare and contemporary sneakers and chronicles the birth and innovation of rubber footwear. Rare samples from the Reebok, Converse and Adidas archives are on display, including a signed pair of Anniversary Superstars from RUN-DMC, as well as sneaker aficionado Bobbito Garcia’s Bata x Wilson x John Wooden shoes from 1977, alongside hand-picked originals by Eric Avar, Mark Smith and renowned Nike designers Tobie and Tinker Hatfield (the iconic brothers behind the brand’s Air Jordan).

“It is the most democratic form of footwear that is out there,” says Elizabeth Semmelhack, the Bata’s senior curator. “No matter where you go, people all around the world are wearing sneakers. But despite the fact that it is so democratic in that manner, one’s choice of sneaker is a minefield of social meaning. One’s individual choice of sneaker says a lot about who you are, what image you are trying to promote and what your interests are.”

Despite the rising hype in the collectible market (and similarly rising price tag), Semmelhack points out that sneakers have a very humble history that arises “from a confluence of two co-dependent shifts in the 19th century.” After the sap of the rubber tree was discovered by the English in the 17th century, it was used by European cobblers to create overshoes. Although it offered great elasticity and bounce, the primitive material was not terribly functional: it cracked in the cold and melted in the heat. It was not until Charles Goodyear added sulphur to the stuff in 1839 by that the material was finally stabilized.

By the middle of the 20th century, it was not uncommon to see people wearing plimsoll sneakers like the Converse Gripper while out performing errands.

“The middle class becomes the first market for these new things such as tennis sneakers, and bicycling shoes,” Semmelhack continues, adding that the first generation of sneakers served multiple purposes and were also aspirational, as items linked to “leisure culture were associated with privilege.”

It is the most democratic form of footwear that is out there

Semmelhack says the globalization of the sneakers began in the 1970s athletic stars and the rise of hip-hop culture: “You not only have the fashion’s being set within urban centres such as NYC, but it begins to impact outlining cities as well.”

As author of the best-selling book, Where’d You Get Those?: New York City’s Sneaker Culture 1960-1987 and director of the new documentary Doin’ it in the Park: Pickup Basketball, NYC, Bobbito Garcia has seen many of the major shifts in sneaker culture. Garcia was part of one of the first generations to sport canvas sneakers regularly, and says that one thing that older sneaker heads understand is the simple appreciation for a comfortable pair of shoes.

“We went from wearing canvas sneakers without cushioning to wearing leather sneakers with really amazing functionality and cushioning,” he says. “But there are huge advances now—you’ve got lunar wire shoes that are super lightweight. So, they [the new generation] are seeing leaps and bounds as well, but I think our leaps and bounds were a lot greater.”

Semmelhack and Garcia point to two pivotal shifts in contemporary sneaker culture: Michael Jordan signing his Nike contract in 1985 and RUN-D.M.C., becoming the first hip-hop artists to sign a sneaker contract in 1986, which locked in their Adidas loyalty and made sneaker culture central to the burgeoning musical genre. Since the history of sneakers tends to skew more masculine, Semmelhack says the popularity of the sneaker in the ’80s also revitalized men’s fashion, allowing more individuality in style.

“There were very few accessories men had access to express individuality,” she says. “Sneakers, I feel, began to unlace that rigid construction of masculinity.”

Dion Walcott, who was instrumental in connecting Semmelhack to some of the key players in the culture, began his sneaker collection in the late 1990s and has seen fads come and go. Now, he says the culture is all about customization. With online communities such as sneakerreport.com, sneakernews.com and the Canadian favourite, deadstock.ca, fans can draw from thousands of new releases for design inspiration before they create their customized kicks.

“I am no longer the guy who is necessarily looking for the $500 pair of sneakers,” Walcott says. “I am really big into customizing, so if I am going to spend $500, I want it to look exactly as I want, versus buying it off the rack.”

Walcott has taken that further with Toronto Loves Kicks, an organization that aims to use love of sneakers to promote cultural dialogue through events like their annual sneaker design competition, where aspiring talents are given 20 minutes to decorate a new shoe with Sharpie markers.

But the ability to custom make just about any sort of shoe won’t replace the lifeblood of any collectables market: scarcity.

“It’s like you build your community of people who will find weird sneakers and it’s easier that way then to travel and beat the pavement in NYC,” he says. “Because once you have your community of people, it’s almost guaranteed that you will find something that no one else has, and I think that’s where the sneaker culture has gone to. Now it’s about how rare they are.”

Analysts had thought that Nike’s third quarter earnings
would come in at 67 cents per share, but when the info was finally
doled out Thursday, the company surprised with a 16 percent increase in
net income to $662 million. That’s 73 cents per share. Not too shabby.

The sporting brand saw growth across the globe, except for a teensy
consumer market called Asia. Apparently, Nike is doing just fine without
China and Japan, as stocks hit a 20-month high at $58.69, Bloomberg reports.

"Our team delivered strong results in Q3. We did it with a relentless
flow of innovation into our key categories," said Mark Parker,
president and CEO of Nike. "Given the diversity of our portfolio, we're
able to capture big opportunities that drive sustainable, profitable
growth. At the same time we continue to invest in new ways to enhance
athletic performance, build strong consumer communities, and improve how
we design and manufacture our products. That’s how we increase our
potential and drive shareholder value."

One of those innovations
came into the public eye earlier in the week when Nike announced its
partnership with Swiss company Bluesign to try and “increase the
sustainability of textiles used in its products, which are made in
nearly 800 factories worldwide,” according
to Bloomberg. Bluesign makes screening tools so that they can pick more
sustainable dyes, detergents and chemicals for their products. Bluesign
already works with a number of big brands, such as North Face,
Patagonia and REI.

That’s all well and good for Nike, but don’t count its main
competitor, Adidas, out of any battle for world-shoe dominance. As the
Las Vegas Informer points out,
Nike may be the strongest shoe brand in the States, but Adidas
dominates elsewhere in the world and is aiming to improve its U.S.
position with a new line of “energy shoes.”

Adidas is also making its move
in the U.S. on another front: college basketball. Nike may outfit more
teams involved with March Madness but Adidas has deals with three of the
No. 1 seeds (Louisville, Kentucky and Indiana) and is also getting a
lot of comments from sports broadcasters about their wildly colored uniforms. If one of the teams makes it to the Final Four, it’ll be worth more than $11 million in exposure, Forbes reports.

Adidas is also turning to celebs outside of the sports world to help broaden its market. Justin Bieber is the spokesperson
for the NEO label and he is featured in 12 short films in a digital
lookbook from the company to help showcase the new spring/summer line.
The marketing copy that goes along with the lookbook is heavy on
hashtags, including #liveyourstyle, #nailit, #dreamit and #styleit,
evidence of the brand's heavy social media push.

It’s not all good news for Adidas these days, though. Penn State has
suspended its licensing contract with the company due to a controversy
at a clothing plant in Indonesia, MSN reports, and it might not be the last school to do so. PSU will give Adidas 60 days to fork over compensation for the 2,600 workers that have been affected.
Kate and Laura Mulleavy of Rodarte are extending their talents to inspire high-schoolers.

The designer sisters have lent their support to the Vans Custom Culture competition.
Created in 2010, Custom Culture is a national high school shoe
customization contest where schools from all over the U.S. compete for a
chance to $50,000 for their art programs. With a blank pair of Vans,
art supplies and creative juices, students are encouraged to give their
all.

Submissions for the shoes have ended, but 50 semi-finalists (ten
schools per region, five total regions) will be announced April 22. To
get the competitors excited, Rodarte created custom shoes clad with gold
and translucent sequins.

A phase synonymous with a city that’s
more famous than the stars its inhabits, “I Love NY” has been a staple
in New York City since its creation in 1977 by designer Milton Glaser.
Since that time, the phase can be found on buildings, subway platforms,
t-shirts and now, shoes. Vans DQM General put together a special capsule collection offering a new method to wear and support this global symbol.

Not only is this iconic saying used to
promote and commemorate tourism, it’s also something many hold near and
dear. Vans delicately places the graphic across their signature
silhouettes by way of an all-over printed Sk8-HI and Authentic.
Showcasing classic white upper and customary waffle outers, the
collection boast white/black-red coloring with the Sk8-Hi drapped in its
traditional black leather sidestripe. The Sk8-Hi retails for $100 USD
while the Authentic goes for $85 USD. Both are at the Vans DQM General
in SoHo and at DQM online.

What to wear? What to choose? Pick a pair of rainbow
shoes. Or purple pants from aunts in France that make you want to strut
and prance. Pink pj’s for pirate naps with pockets to hide treasure
maps. Red rubber boots, the robot kind. All these and more are clothes
you’ll find in Stone’s colour-full book of wearable rhymes.

Now that they’ve nailed the skinny suit, Canadian men have started buying up fashionable shoes to match.

Sales of men’s footwear increased by 13 per cent in Canada 2012, according to research from The NPD Group.

While women’s shoes
sales grew by three per cent in 2012, sales of footwear for men pulled
overall growth in the industry up by six per cent, to a total of $5.1
billion in sales.

“We’re always quick to
assume that women impel the success of the footwear market, but what
we’re experiencing instead in Canada is a complete takeover of the shoe
closet by men’s footwear,” said Tracey Jarosz, executive director for
Canada Fashion at The NPD Group.

Jarosz said sales grew
in all men’s footwear categories in Canada last year — athletic shoes,
dress shoes, casual shoes, boots and sandals.

“We know it started
with apparel last year as men started to purge their closets and buy
more tailored clothes. I think footwear is the next natural
progression,” she said.

It’s a new world for
men’s footwear, one in which Toronto Raptor John Lucas III sports a pair
of Christian Louboutin pony hair sneakers and feels comfortable
admitting his love of shoes — he has collected 6,000 pairs of all kinds,
which he pampers, it has been reported.

“I feel like I’m
watching men step into a whole new moment in men’s fashion,” said
Elizabeth Semmelhack, senior curator of the Bata Shoe Museum.

The museum is to
announce today that it will launch an exhibit on April 25 called “Out of
the Box — The Rise of Sneaker Culture.”

Semmelhack sees the
rise of the sneaker as a step in getting men to loosen up their somber
fashion, sparking a shift in idealized masculinity that emphasizes youth
and individuality over the anonymous authority of a suit and black
brogues.

“Footwear is a way of
expressing a greater range of individuality. It’s also a way of
expressing fashionableness and increasingly, we are expecting men to be
fashionable,” she said.

Footwear for men has
been a growth leader at Sears Canada, which is shedding its image as a
dowdy fashion retailer, pairing with Buffalo International and Aldo
Group to design and produce footwear and denim lines.

“Where a man would
normally own three to five pairs of shoes, that same generation may now
own 10 to 15 pairs of shoes,” said Patrick Dillon, vice-president of
footwear for Sears.

“Whereas a man would
normally wear a classic dress shoe with a suit, now he’s mixing it up
with coloured footwear and athletic footwear. It’s no longer about the
black brogue.”

One of the top-selling shoes for men at Ron White in the fall had a tangerine orange sole and matching laces.

Shoe sales for men are up because men are becoming more comfortable expressing themselves through fashion, said White.

Fashionplates like soccer star David Beckham have led the way.

“Society has evolved
with more emphasis on men’s grooming and fashion, and with the Beckhams
of the world making it okay to be a fashion guy while still maintaining
your manhood, it’s really seeing growth,” said White.

Tan brogues to wear with suits are doing well, said Ron King, chief merchandise officer at Town Shoes and The Shoe Company.

“If you see the young, more fashion-forward guy, he’s likely wearing tan these days,” said King.

Boots of all kinds for
men, from ankle boots to semi-casual, are another popular category, he
said. “There is definitely some shift in the market. Some men are
becoming more interested in fashion.”

“Women are no longer the only ones with a shoe fetish,” said David Clemmer, Toronto stylist and CEO of the talent agency Judy Inc.

The increase in
women’s footwear sales in 2012 came from dress and casual shoes,
according to the NPD data. While in-store purchases account for the
majority of all footwear sales, online purchases continue to grow,
increasing 25 per cent in 2012. Four per cent of men’s footwear sales
last year were online purchases.

Michael Black,
territory manager for German shoemaker Josef Seibel and president of the
Ontario Shoe Travellers Association, said he hasn’t seen an increase in
sales in men’s shoes at the $150 to $185 consumer price point.

Footwear for men is
extremely sensitive to recessionary trends, he said, and an increase in
sales in men’s footwear may perhaps signal a new confidence in the
economy.

“Whenever we’re sort of recessionary, it seems that men pretty much immediately stop buying footwear.”

But overall, men still buy far less footwear than women.

“It’s a stereotype, but it’s true,” said Black.

Yoya Tolic, an
assistant buyer at Get Outside, says conservative colours continue to be
popular at the two locations in Toronto, which feature fashionable but
practical footwear, but Converse and Vans have always done well in
colours.
