The cleats can actually extend in response to soggy ground conditions. Here’s how they work.

At a big, blow-out event in London last week, Nike unveiled its splashiest innovation, in advance of the 2010 World Cup: The Mercurial Superfly Vapor II football boot (or “soccer shoe,” to Americans). Aside from the hotrod looks, the most intriguing innovation was the “adaptive traction technology,” which allows the pegs of the cleats to actively adjust to turf conditions. Say what? How’s that happen?

“From pitch to pitch, and even within a single pitch, the ground conditions vary,” says Andrew Caine, Nike’s creative director for soccer footware. “Pro players vary their boots to adjust, so we had a vision of shoe that would adapt.” Three years later, the Vapor II has studs that extend up to 3mm in soft ground, but act like a normal stud on firm ground.

“In design, the simpler the mechanism, the better something works,” says Caine. For the Superfly II, there are three basic components that allow the pegs to adapt. The structural support for the shoe comes from a carbon-fiber “plate” in the sole. Meanwhile, the bright orange pegs on the front of the shoe have a moving column inside. (Which you can see in the picture below–it’s the black core.)

When a player steps into soft ground, the carbon sole flexes, pushing those columns down. The clear coating on the outside of the sole stretches in response, thus allowing the pegs to literally extend–while also keeping the entire mechanism sealed off from water and mud.

After impact, the coating then pulls the pegs back into place, and keeps them from driving back up into the foot.

The colors, meanwhile, are meant to be a performance enhancer for the entire team. The orange swoosh is meant to be a bold contrast with the green soccer pitch, thus making teammates easier to spot in a player’s peripheral vision while he’s on the run. And that’s the same reason the outside is purple and the inside is dark: “The contrast creates a visual flicker that engages the peripheral vision,” says Caine.

People tend to view running as a “green” sport because it is light on equipment and doesn’t usually require the use of a car to get you somewhere. It’s true that running has a lot going for it, however, the apparel that runners use can take a very big toll on the environment. According to a 2008 study by Runner’s World, the average runner goes through three pairs of shoes each year, which translates to 430 lbs of CO2 used in manufacturing and shipping. What’s worse is that the materials used in running shoes can take up to a thousand years to biodegrade in a landfill. By choosing eco-friendly running shoes and apparel, you can drastically reduce the impact your sport has on the environment. Check out these ideas to help you have your greenest run yet!

Brooks Green Silence

Brooks, long known for great shoes and ethical business practices, is now throwing its hat into the ring of green running gear. The Green Silence is a racing flat that incorporates several eco-features. It’s made with the innovative BioMoGo midsole, which biodegrades in twenty years, as opposed to the usual thousand. In addition, 75% of the shoes materials are post-consumer recycled. Brooks promises that the Green Silence doesn’t compromise on fit or performance, so you can run your next race feeling fast and environmentally responsible.

E.N.D.

E.N.D. is a new-comer to the footwear scene and it is dedicated to making Environmentally Neutral Designed trail and running shoes. They use up to 30% recycled rubber in their shoes and 90% water-based glues. More significantly, E.N.D. has chosen to focus on reducing the waste of the manufacturing process by doing more with less: fewer parts, less steel, less energy, less oil. Sadly, E.N.D. was recently incorporated into the LaCrosse product line and the company’s future is unclear. However, you can still find E.N.D. shoes for purchase on many sites. Get yours, like the award-winning PBnJ pictured here, while they last.

Newton Running Shoes

Newton Running is a new, Colorado-based company that has gained a lot of attention for its innovative design. Newton shoes help you to land on your mid or forefoot, thereby reducing injury. The company also strives to be environmentally responsible. Newton shoes incorporate 10% recycled rubber, 100% recycled webbing, and 100% post consumer recycled materials in their shoe boxes. Although these shoes are not as green as some of the others featured here, it’s great to see a company taking steps in the right direction. Newton shoes may be your best option if you are injury prone and eco-conscious.

Nike Considered Pegasus

Since 1993, when they introduced a shoe recycling program, Nike has been looking for ways to reduce the carbon-footprint of their products. The result is the Nike Considered line, which includes a greener update of an old running favorite, the Pegasus. The Considered Pegasus uses fewer, better-cut pieces, reducing the shoe’s weight (and waste) by 13%. The uppers are made with a high percentage of recycled materials and the outsoles utilize both environmentally-preferred and recycled rubber. Given Nike’s incredible power in the marketplace, this step towards sustainability will hopefully influence other companies to do the same.

Willow’s latest collection, Eclipse, received overwhelming praise, using the natural curves of the body as a canvas with fabrics working like a second skin to highlight a perfect eclipse of the feminine form.

“Kit is wonderful to work with because she is a true collaborator,” said ghd Hair Director, Sophie Roberts, who created an effortless style inspired by the beautiful collection.

“The inspiration behind this look really comes from the woman who wears WILLOW. She is strong and feminine and her hair reflects that,” said Sophie.

“This season was all about ‘fierce beauty’ so for hair, this translated as a simple but deliberate style that says modern chic… a low, side parted ponytail, rough in texture,” she added.

Supporting Sophie backstage was members of the New Zealand ghd directive team, Michael Beel, Sara Allsop and Iain Smith, who flew to New York especially for the event.

Called the Internet of Things, it’s seeping into some massive consumer industries. One of them is fitness. Many of you have heard of the Nike+ running shoes, which sends running data to your iPod via a sensor. Adidas recently joined the race to connect your running gear to the Internet, with its miCoach system. There is also the Wii Fit and innovative Web fitness services like NordicTrack’s iFit.

Keep up, because tracking your fitness progress on the Internet – via sensors attached to your body or workout gear – is going to become very popular.

A recent USA Today article notes the increasing usage of Web-enabled products that help you monitor your workouts and give you real-time coaching. The Nike+ shoes and iPod system is one of the market leaders.

The Nike+ shoes come with a sensor that tracks your run, then sends the data to your iPod. It even has its own social network. And what Web product circa 2010 doesn’t come with a Twitter and Facebook connection? Sure enough, the Nike+ can automatically tweet and post a status report on Facebook.

Meanwhile the Adidas miCoach PACER is a running pacer device that retails for $140. The bundle includes a Heart Rate Monitor and a “Stride Sensor” – a battery-operated sensor that fits into your shoe.

The miCoach Pacer can also verbally coach the runner during their run, “to ensure that they are staying within their targeted heart rate zone.”

There’s an accompanying website, where users can create training plans, set goals and monitor their progress.

Let us know if you currently use an Internet-connected fitness system, especially if it makes use of sensors.

Li yes,If you want totake some exercise ,you can go to buy mbt shoes.

We’re in the coldest winter for decades, and the snowlined streets of Britain have been flooded by the ubiquitous Ugg boot.

Over the past month, sales of the celebrity favourite from Down Under have rocketed as women across the country pay a small fortune in the hope of keeping their feet warm and their bodies upright in the treacherous conditions.

The UK importers say they’re selling 140 per cent more pairs than at this time last year, while John Lewis estimates that year-on-year sales have doubled in its stores over the past few weeks.

It’s hardly surprising that with temperatures plummeting, we’re on the lookout for ways to keep warm. And what’s warmer than sheepskinlined boots?

After all, sheepskin was what RAF pilots used to wear to stave off frostbite on long missions, so you’d think it would be just as effective when it comes to battling our current sub-zero conditions.

Well, yes and no. While sheepskin might be warm, Uggs were never designed to be worn in snow and ice.

As a result, hordes of us who thought we were doing the sensible thing have found ourselves with a bruised bottom after taking tumbles in our Uggs.

Melissa Nathanson, 32, from West London, is one of the walking wounded. ‘I came out of the house and I was slipping all over the place in my Uggs,’ she says. ‘Then I went flying and crash-landed in the snow. I now have a massive lump underneath my left knee and there is bruising up and down that leg. My arm was also bleeding and I’m still in pain.

‘I thought Uggs were supposed to be the perfect thing for the cold weather, but even though the soles are rubber, they have absolutely no grip – they’re so dangerous in these conditions.’

Detractors of ugg boots sale have long insisted that they are nothing more than a glorified slipper and should never be seen outside the house.

They have a point. While sheepskin may be warm, it’s certainly not waterproof.

Cosy but not for the cold

More irritatingly, when sheepskin gets wet, it conducts heat, or, in this case, cold, as Nicol Davis, 28, from North London, discovered.

‘They’re just not suitable for this weather, which seems ridiculous because they are usually so warm and cosy,’ she says. ‘I paid about £140 for a new pair of Uggs for the winter, but after five minutes outside they were sopping wet and haven’t been properly dry for days.’

Candice Berger, 34, from London, adds: ‘I was walking back from the supermarket and I live on a hill, so I went skidding down the slope in my Uggs and landed on my bottom. The soles get very wet and slippery. They don’t have very good traction.’

But, then, they’re not meant to. The lightweight sole was not designed to be used for tramping through snow; it was designed for walking on the beaches of Sydney or Los Angeles.
Despite the grooves, the ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) or foam rubber hardly offers the sort of traction needed on icy pavements.

To be fair, the manufacturer doesn’t market its boots as being ideal for polar expeditions – hardly surprising considering this style of boot originated in the warm, dry climate of Australia.
It is said that pilots wore them in World War I before sheepshearers in the Outback appropriated them in the Twenties. But it was in the Sixties and Seventies that sheepskin boots became a practical fashion accessory, adopted by surfers in Australia and on the West coast of America who wanted to keep their toes warm when they came out of the sea.

The boot’s most recent reincarnation came courtesy of the Deckers Outdoor Corporation, who acquired the Ugg Australia brand in 1995 and, three years later, embarked on a campaign to position the boot as a high-end, luxury item of footwear.

By sending pairs to celebrities and ensuring that Uggs boots were stocked only in upmarket shops, they began to create a buzz around the boots that finally came to fruition in 2000 when Oprah Winfrey, who had been sent some, loved them so much that she bought 350 more pairs to give to her staff and included them on the highly influential Oprah’s Favourite Things segment of her TV show.

From then on, they became the slouch footwear of choice for celebrities from Kate Moss and Sienna Miller to Kate Winslet and Paris Hilton.

And despite fashionistas constantly predicting their demise, they appear to have an enduring appeal that just won’t die.

This week, the British Chiropractic Association, concerned about snow and ice-induced injuries, issued guidelines, saying: ‘A waterproof shoe is preferable for outside, one that gives you support (like a walking shoe), has a grippy sole and can be laced supportively around the foot and ankle.’

If you really want the warmth of sheepskin but still want to stay dry and bruise-free, try the lappone boot (around £125) from Italian brand Olang.

It’s made from waterrepellent nubuck, with a fleece lining, and has mini-crampons in the sole that you can flip out to walk safely on ice.

OK, so they might not be endorsed by Oprah or Kate Moss, but they’re also unlikely to leave you cold, wet, or bruised after a walk to the shops.

We’ve made no secret of the deep existential nausea caused by looking at the mysteriously long line in front of the Ugg store in Soho. But the latest news related to the Australian-born trend that would not die has sent a shiver that runs from our eyes to our very soul — Jimmy Choo is collaborating with Ugg. While there are no preview pictures yet (and perhaps that is a blessing), WWD reports that the line, called “Ugg & Jimmy Choo,” will use the famous sausagelike boot construction, adding “design details that embody the spirit of the Jimmy Choo brand.” Perhaps as a self-defense mechanism, our imaginations can’t even conceive of what that would look like. Whatever form they take, the sheepskin creations will market from $595 through to $795, which constitutes a second crime in itself.
