The Winter Olympics can be fun for the whole family. Getting the kids involved in the excitement of the Olympics can bring everyone together and can be a learning experience as well. There are some things that you can do at home to encourage your kids to want to learn more about the Winter Olympics and watch some of the events with you.

Host your own Olympic Games. Turning something into a game is an easy way to get kids excited about something. To bring the Winter Olympics to life in your home, make your own Olympic games. Make sure that the games are age-appropriate and something that the kids will enjoy. For the event of ice skating, have your kids put on their sneakers and pretend like they are ice skates and have them show off their own figure skating routine. For ice hockey, you can use brooms for hockey sticks and balls for pucks. Get creative and have the kids help you think of ideas. Don’t forget to hand each kid their own medal after they have competed.

Research the games together. The best way to teach your kids about the Winter Olympics is to learn about it together. Research things like the different events that will be played as well as the history of the Olympics. Set up a poster board and have the kids write down points about the Winter Olympics that they think are important. You can even have them make a list of events that they want to watch as well as what time they will be aired.

Cook Olympic-inspired snacks. What kid doesn’t love a fun snack? There are many different special Olympic-inspired treats that you and your kids can make together. Kids can take 5 donuts and put different colored frosting on each one to symbolize the Olympic rings. You can also fill an ice cream cone with vanilla ice cream and pour red sprinkles over the top to make it look like an Olympic torch. I have seen the same done with an ice cream cone and cheddar cheese popcorn to look like a torch. Decorate cupcakes and use different-colored fruit loops on top to represent the Olympic rings.

Olympics Crafts: Use leftover paper towel card board and construction paper to make Olympic torches. Use red, blue, and gold ribbon and construction paper to make medals. There is Olympic Bingo and lots of free coloring pages you can print online as well. Research the craft projects together to see which ones interest your children the most.

Throw your own Winter Olympics viewing party. Everything is better with friends. Allow your children to invite some of their friends to come over and view the Olympics with you. Your children and their friends can cheer own their favorite athletes together while eating some of the Olympic-inspired snacks you made earlier. Encourage your child to tell their friends about some of the things they learned while researching the Olympics.

Make the Olympics a family affair. This is the perfect opportunity to make memories with your children. Since the Winter Olympics are being broadcast for a couple weeks, there will be many different opportunities to bring your family together to cheer on your favorite athletes. Follow our board on Pinterest!

With a special holiday involving flowers, chocolate, and hearts coming up soon, you may have been planning to spend your extra money on Valentine’s Day items over the next couple of weeks. If you’re hoping to save money in February, though, those are definitely not the items that will be on sale… at least not during the first half of the month! Retailers are motivated to clear out winter inventory to make room for spring’s arrival. Anything cold-weather-related – heavy coats, gloves, hats, boots, and ski gear – gets marked down in price. Home improvement stores discount grills, snow blowers, firewood, and more. Every part of the year has items that tend to be available for lower-than-usual prices, and the last full month of winter is no exception.

Every part of the year has items that tend to be available for lower-than-usual prices, and the last full month of winter is no exception. Here is an expanded list of things to buy on sale in February:

Score Sweet Deals This February: What To Buy (and When!)

Valentine’s Day might have you thinking hearts and flowers, but savvy shoppers know February is prime time for scoring deals on unexpected items. Retailers are clearing out winter inventory to make room for spring goodies, so think cozy gear, home improvement essentials, and even electronics.

Bundle Up While Prices Go Down: Winter Apparel and Gear

As the last snowflakes of winter melt away, retailers are eager to move those bulky coats, gloves, hats, and boots. This means fantastic deals on winter wear for next year – think stocking up on warm layers before the chill sets in again! It’s also a great time to snag discounts on ski gear, snowboards, ice skates, and other cold-weather essentials you might need for your winter adventures.

Fire Up Your Grill (Later) with February Savings

Sure, grilling season feels miles away, but February is actually the perfect time to score a new grill at a bargain price. Home improvement stores are looking to clear out inventory before spring, so those shiny gas grills are calling your name. Check yours for any wear and tear – maybe a fresh start is in order before those summer BBQs fire up!

Beat the Summer Heat: Air Conditioners on Sale

Let’s face it, unless you live in a perpetually balmy climate, your air conditioner is probably taking a well-deserved break right now. But this lull in usage is precisely when retailers offer discounts on new AC units. Did yours struggle to keep cool last summer? Now’s the time to invest in a fresh system and be ready for those scorching summer days ahead.

Freshen Up Your Home (and Wallet): Cleaning Supplies and Services

Spring cleaning fever is about to hit, so why not get a head start with discounted cleaning supplies? Plus, keep an eye out for deals on professional cleaning services – who wouldn’t love a little help tackling those deep-cleaning tasks?

Sleep Tight: Mattress Mania in February

New mattress models are typically released in the spring, making February prime time for scoring incredible discounts on existing inventory. So, if your mattress is starting to feel like a lumpy potato sack, treat yourself to an upgrade without breaking the bank.

Electronics Bonanza: Super Bowl and Presidents’ Day Deals

Super Bowl season often brings sizzling deals on TVs – perfect for catching all the game-day action in style. Plus, as new electronics models are released later in spring, retailers discount older models, creating a goldmine of opportunities for tech lovers. Laptops, smartphones, headphones – you name it, February is a great month to find it for less.

Furnish Your Home with Flair: Last Year’s Styles at Deep Discounts

Many furniture manufacturers unveil their newest designs in the spring, prompting retailers to clear out last year’s styles at deeply discounted prices. This means you can score stylish and functional pieces without paying full price.

Flowers and Chocolate

Don’t get your hopes up; you won’t see sales on these types of romantic items until after Valentine’s Day. But you might as well pick some up for yourself after the holiday. Particularly if you’re doing some heavy cleaning, you’ll want to decorate with fresh flowers and reward yourself with a few delicious chocolates afterward!

During the month of February, keep your eyes open for Super Bowl sales in the early part of the month, then Presidents’ Day sales later on. A lot of what will be on sale will consist of electronics, but you’re likely to see other great deals as well.

Have you seen anything on sale in February that you plan on taking advantage of? Share it with our readers!

If I asked you when the best time is to stock up on school supplies, you’d say July, right? It’s when all of the big box stores tend to have boxes of crayons for cheap or two, 10-packs of markers for a couple of bucks, and those spiral notebooks that get caught on everything for cheap. I know that in my house, we stock up on these back-to-school items because I want them to last until the following summer… why spend a dollar on a folder for a project in May when I can buy it over the summer for a dime?

After the winter holidays, we all feel the pinch, financially speaking, so many of us don’t go out and make big purchases in January. Many retailers hold their biggest sales of the year in January to attract customers after the holidays. Be on the lookout for extra percentage-off sales. Retailers do tend to offer big savings on certain items during this cold, blustery month, though, so if you have the funds kicking around or you just need to satisfy your desire to shop, check out these items:

Whites: You know, towels and linens… and in all colors, not just white. This is a fairly widespread phenomenon, so if you need sheets and towels, this is the time to buy them!

Summer Appliances: Will you be needing a new air conditioner or grill come summer? Now’s the time to buy. There is very little demand for these appliances this time of year, so the prices may be lower than usual.

Houses: Are you in the market to buy a house? While conventional wisdom says to wait until spring or summer when moving is logistically easier (and the kids are out of school), financial wisdom says to look in the winter. Sellers might be willing to negotiate a bit more for a quick sale because not very many potential buyers are looking at houses.

Snack Foods: Superbowl weekend is a great time to buy snack foods. While you don’t want to overindulge any time of year, if you like keeping foods like chips and dips in your pantry for company or treats, stock up now.

Cold Weather Comfort Foods: During the months of January and February, chances are good that someone in your household will come down with the common cold or some other mild illness. Take advantage of January sales on things like tea and canned soup so you’ll be prepared.

Christmas decorations: January is also a good time to buy Christmas decorations, wrapping paper, etc., for next year at deeply discounted prices. Stock up for the next year.

Winter Apparel: Winter apparel like coats, gloves, and scarves also go on sale in January as retailers make room for spring inventory.

Fitness Equipment: Fitness equipment and treadmills are often discounted in January when people fail to keep up their New Year’s resolutions.

Weight Loss Programs and Gym Memberships: ‘Tis the season to make weight-loss resolutions, and the marketing companies of weight loss programs know it! You’re probably seeing Weight Watchers coupons and flyers for gym memberships in your mailbox right now. If you’re looking to start a healthier lifestyle, there’s no time like the present. Follow through with your New Year’s diet resolutions.

Gift Cards: After the Holidays, many of us have a stack of gift cards that either get lost or go unused. This is a great time to either cash them in or put them up for auction.

January may still feel gloomy as winter drags on, but the sales can offer a bright spot for your budget and give you a welcome opportunity to stock up. With kids home for winter break, too, it’s the perfect time to take on some organizing projects with all those discounted office and household supplies. Motivate yourself to follow through on healthy lifestyle changes by taking advantage of fitness equipment promotions as well. Just think how good it will feel come summer when you realize how much money you saved shopping smart back in January!

As always, when sales shopping, set a reasonable budget for yourself, make a list so you don’t overspend on impulse buys, and focus on staples or upcoming needs rather than wants. Take the time to price compare across retailers as well before you pull the trigger. Most of all, enjoy getting reacquainted with your community and reveling in the quieter vibes of local stores after the intensity of holiday crowds. Here’s to a new year filled with joy, adventures with loved ones, and hopefully, some extra pennies in your pocket thanks to winter deals!

Smart shopping throughout the year can help you save money, and stocking up on staples helps you save time. Have you found any great deals this month? Share them with us!

As January comes to an end, most of us have all of our tax forms rolling in, and it’s almost time to start getting everything in order before the tax man comes calling on April 15. While you’re busily gathering receipts W-2s and documentation from the bank, you might be overwhelmed at the state of your finances in general. I know that once the credit card bills are in from December, I often feel a bit overwhelmed!

Feeling overwhelmed by your finances? You’re not alone. Many women face unique financial challenges, from the gender pay gap to societal expectations around spending. But taking control of your money doesn’t have to be stressful. This comprehensive guide will empower you to create a budget, reduce debt, build a brighter financial future, and break through barriers that hold many women back.

Know Your Worth & Take Charge:

Financial empowerment starts with recognizing your value. Don’t shy away from negotiating salaries – research industry standards and practice articulating your worth. Remember, advocating for yourself is essential! Invest in your future through education, training, and professional development to boost your earning potential.

Track Your Spending Like a Pro:

Understanding where your money goes is crucial for effective budgeting. Embrace technology with free budgeting apps like Mint, Personal Capital, or YNAB. These apps connect to your bank accounts and categorize spending automatically, making tracking a breeze. If you prefer a hands-on approach, carry a notebook and jot down every purchase.

Tackle Debt Strategically:

Don’t let debt overwhelm you. The debt snowball method can be a powerful tool. List all your debts from smallest to largest balance. Focus on paying off the smallest debt first while making minimum payments on others. This creates momentum and motivation, helping you gain control faster. Explore debt consolidation options if high-interest rates are weighing you down.

Build a Rock-Solid Emergency Fund:

Unexpected expenses happen. Aim for 3-6 months of living expenses saved in an easily accessible account. This cushion protects you from financial setbacks like job loss or medical emergencies, providing peace of mind and financial stability.

Invest Smartly and Break the Gender Gap:

Investing is crucial for long-term wealth building. Start early and be consistent – even small contributions add up significantly over time thanks to the power of compound interest. Don’t let fear or lack of knowledge hold you back. Seek out resources specifically designed for women investors, join online communities, and don’t hesitate to ask questions.

Challenge Spending Guilt and Find Balance:

Societal expectations can make it harder for women to prioritize their financial well-being. Challenge the guilt often associated with spending on yourself. Remember, enjoying life and taking care of your needs are essential. Build a budget that allows for both responsible saving and guilt-free enjoyment.

Plan for Life Stages & Transitions:

Life is full of transitions – career breaks due to family commitments, caregiving responsibilities for aging parents, or unexpected life events. Anticipate these changes and plan accordingly. Explore resources like elder care assistance programs, childcare subsidies, and flexible work arrangements.

Build Your Financial Network:

You don’t have to go it alone! Connect with other women through financial literacy groups, workshops, and online communities. Share experiences, learn from each other’s successes and challenges, and build a supportive network that empowers you on your financial journey.

Additional Tips

Set financial goals for the year. Be specific about what you want to achieve – pay off credit card debt, save for a down payment, increase retirement contributions, etc. Break big goals down into smaller monthly targets.

Automate your finances as much as possible – set up automatic transfers to savings accounts and retirement accounts, automatic bill pay, etc. This makes consistency easier.

Review your recurring subscriptions and look for things you don’t use or need to cancel. Those small charges add up.

Check your credit report and score. Knowing where you stand helps you track improvement.

Consider meeting with a fee-only financial advisor to help create a personalized plan. An outside perspective can provide motivation and accountability.

Use budgeting apps or personal finance software to monitor spending habits and net worth over time. Mint, YNAB, Personal Capital, and others have helpful features.

Build an inheritance, insurance, and estate plan if you haven’t already. This provides stability for your family’s future.

Involve your family in financial literacy. Set money goals collaboratively and teach budgeting basics to kids.

The beginning of the year is the perfect time to build habits for improved financial health. Even small consistent changes lead to progress over time.

If keeping your financial health under control is something that you have struggled with, why not make next year your year to finally make and stick to a plan?

Remember: This journey is about progress, not perfection. Celebrate your wins, learn from setbacks, and don’t hesitate to seek help from financial professionals when needed. You have the power to create a secure and fulfilling financial future for yourself!

Do you have any great tips for taming your money monster?

Another year has come and gone, and it’s January once again. I’ve always been particularly fond of January because it happens to be my birthday month! My mother and my son are also January babies, so for my family, it’s a time of celebrating, even though the month of big celebratory holidays has just passed.

Having experienced a January birthday thirty-something times, and having heard the complaints of Mom (who is actually a New Year’s Day baby!), I’ve tried really hard to prevent my son from being able to make the same complaints of “ugh, I don’t like having a birthday in January!” If you are lucky enough to have a birthday in, say, June, you might look back fondly on things like scavenger hunts, swimming, pinatas, clowns, and hordes of children at your birthday parties. For the January birthday-boy or -girl, however, these are not the typical experience.

Many times, well-meaning folks hand those born during the first month of the year a gift in December, and say, “this is for both your birthday and insert-December-holiday-of-choice-here.” Please, don’t do this to the children in your life who celebrate a birthday in January. Yes, I know that times are tight and that it might seem silly to buy two gifts within a two-week period of time… but kids notice this sort of thing, and it bothers them.

Sometimes you might be tempted to skip out on a January birthday party. The weather is frightful, you’re all partied out, you’re out of cash, and snuggling on the couch with your family watching movies and drinking hot cocoa sounds like a much more appealing option than running out for yet another gathering of too many people stuffed into an overheated house. It’s really not fair to the birthday child, though. Try to make it to the party, if at all possible.

If you’re the mom of a child born in January, a successful birthday party may require a special effort. Once the kids get rowdy, and they always do, it’s a difficult proposition to get them all into their snowpants and boots to go outside, particularly if they’re under 6 or 7 years old and still need help pulling on and buckling and tying and snapping. Consider taking the party out of your house entirely, and having parents drop their kids off to you at a bowling alley, roller skating or ice skating rink, or indoor amusement center. This saves you the trouble of sweeping muddy clumps of snow out of your living room, and also gives the kids a relatively contained place to get their energy out.

A January birthday does not have to be a reason for your child to say “woe is me.” A bit of forethought and planning can go a long way toward giving your son or daughter happy birthday party memories. Be sure to have a contingency plan if you live in an area that is prone to rough winter weather (one year we were living in Connecticut and had to have a “snow date” for my son’s party), plan to relax about the extra mess and chaos if you’re planning to have the party at home, and consider pushing the party off for a week or so if the birthday falls immediately after the hustle and bustle (and travel!) of the holiday season, to raise the likelihood that more people will be able to make it. What have you done to make your child’s (or your own) January birthday extra special?

It’s here: the biggest shopping month of the year! The holidays are here, and so are the deals! For bargain hunters and savvy shoppers, December is one of the best times of the year to score major savings on gifts, holiday goods, experiences, electronics, cold-weather apparel, and more. Retailers are slashing prices left and right in an attempt to hit their targets before the new year. From Black Friday to New Year’s Day – it’s weeks of non-stop sales. Whether you still need to check some names off your gift list or want to treat yourself while prices are low, get ready to shop because we’ve rounded up the very best sales to take advantage of this month. Here’s the list of things that are on sale in December:

Thanksgiving items. Since Thanksgiving dinner foods can also be enjoyed as part of your Christmas dinner, it makes sense to take advantage of low prices on turkeys, boxed stuffing, cranberry sauce, and other holiday groceries. You can also pick up turkey-themed plates and napkins for a song; either use these for casual lunches this month (less cleanup!) or put a stash aside for next year’s Thanksgiving.

Jewelry. Are you planning on getting someone a pair of diamond earrings or a ring with a precious stone? The prices won’t be quite as low as during non-gift-giving seasons, but you might be able to get a good bargain.

Televisions. You’ll see steep discounts on Black Friday, but the low prices will come back after the middle of the month.

Christmas decor. A few days before and certainly the days after Christmas, you’ll be able to grab ornaments, garland, gingerbread houses, creches, tablecloths, and other holiday decorations for extremely low prices.

Bicycles. Unless you live in one of the Southern states, chances are that you’re not riding bikes right now. The prices are slashed in order to keep inventory moving. Consider purchasing now and storing it for a springtime birthday or one of the spring holidays!

Groceries. Citrus fruits are in season right now, and prices of oranges, grapefruits, and lemons are low. Also, nuts are on sale for holiday parties. You can stock up on these because they will last for a long time. You can also get great deals on boxed chocolates. Even if you don’t want to use them right now, you can put some aside for chocolate indulgences in the new year! Look for BOGO deals and shop the stores’ app before you head out.

Online Classes. This year, we discovered that online cooking classes can be great for a date night or have the whole family cook with you.

Subscriptions: Audible, Spotify Premium, Instacart, or Shipt is a good gift idea this year.

While you can find great sales all month, you’ll find the best ones after December 15th and right after Christmas because retailers are trying to push out the old inventory before the new year.

The flurry of holiday sales extends through the end of December, which means there’s still ample time to shop and save. As each year comes to a close, retailers move aggressively to clear out inventory before the next cycle begins. Take advantage of this time-sensitive opportunity to purchase items you’ll actually use throughout the next year. Remember to employ smart shopping strategies – make lists, compare prices across retailers, read the fine print on discounts, and leverage coupons or cash back when possible. Follow these tips and enjoy the very merriest of deals this holiday season!

Have you found any excellent bargains for December that you’d like to share with our readers?

However, it can be hard to get your kids to eat items that they aren’t used too. Luckily there are quite a few side dishes that use some of your favorite Thanksgiving foods in a way that will have your kids coming back for seconds. My kids are getting old enough to help in the kitchen and these are a few of the side they like to make for themselves.

Yam Crunch
Ingredients:
– 1 cup canned yams
– 1/3 cup butter
– 1/2 cup brown sugar
– 1/2 cup corn flakes

To make:
Spray an 8 inch by 8 inch pan with cooking spray. Preheat the oven to 450 degrees. Place the yams into a bowl and mash them with a fork. Put the smashed yams into the pan and spread them out evenly. Melt the butter in the microwave for 30 seconds. Put the brown sugar, butter and corn flakes into a bowl and mix together. Sprinkle the mixture over top of the yams. Bake in the oven for 15 minutes.

Cheesy Cubed Potatoes
Ingredients:
– 6 cooked potatoes
– 8 ounces of shredded cheese
– ½ cup sour cream
– 1 cup water

To make:
Peel the potatoes and cut them into cubes. Place the potatoes into a pot and pour the water overtop of them. Pour in the cheese and sour cream. Cook over medium heat until the cheese is melted. Stir occasionally.

Cauliflower Tots
Ingredients:
– 2 cups cooked, chopped cauliflower
– 2 eggs
– 1/3 cup Parmesan cheese
– ½ cup breadcrumbs

To make:
Preheat the oven to 450 degrees. Spray a baking sheet with cooking spray. Place the Parmesan cheese and breadcrumbs into a bowl and mix together. Crack the eggs and place them in their own bowl and stir. Place one piece of chopped cauliflower into the egg, then into the Parmesan and breadcrumb mixture. Put the coated piece of cauliflower onto the baking sheet. Repeat this process with each piece of cauliflower. Bake in the oven for 15 minutes.

Do you have any side dishes to add? What are some of your families favorites?

When I was little, we would always gather at my grandmother’s house for Thanksgiving. It was a feast for the senses. The aromas of roast turkey, sage dressing, and sweet potatoes with warm cinnamon and maple syrup permeated the air. My aunt would roast the turkey at her house, making two different kinds of stuffing: sausage and one without. My mother made mashed turnips (which I disliked as a child and still don’t like very much!). I remember her spending a long time in the morning peeling and slicing the unwieldy roots while my brothers and I would watch the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. My great-grandmother made a gelatin and fruit concoction that she called Judge Peter’s Pudding; my grandmother continued to make it for every holiday after Great-Grammie died (and she swears that a man named Judge Peter personally gave her the recipe, but Google says otherwise).

Chances are, you can think back to your childhood and remember special Thanksgiving traditions, too! For most of us, these are warm, fuzzy feelings filled with family and warmth and delicious smells and tastes. And one day, our kids will have these strong memories of Thanksgiving past, along with traditions to pass on to their children.

As the house filled with family, the rooms buzzed with laughter and storytelling. After we had our fill, the conversation would turn to pie. My aunt’s apple pie with hand-rolled crust and gently spiced filling was stellar, but I always saved room for my grandmother’s chocolate silk pie. With its airy mousse filling and whipped cream topping, it was divinely smooth and rich. A small slice would satisfy any sweet tooth. To cut the sweetness, I’d pair it with a child-sized glass of tart cranberry juice cocktail.

My family lives far away from our extended family now, so we don’t get to see them on the holidays unless we’re traveling. Still, we do have a few Thanksgiving traditions that we have worked to keep up over the years:

We put up a Thanksgiving tree! In our case, it consists of scrapbook-page leaves decorating one of our walls. Everyone (family member and visitor) is invited to write down some things they’re thankful for and tape them to the tree throughout November. Now that my family is spread farther apart, we honor those memories with our own new traditions. We put up a “Thankfulness Tree” with paper leaves where we’ve written things we’re grateful for this year.

We have special foods that we always serve on Thanksgiving. These include traditional foods like turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes and corn. We also always make deviled eggs, put out a tray of different types of olives, and mix pearl onions into our peas (this last one is a throwback from my childhood Turkey Days).

The kids always watch the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. We all get a kick out of the floats and like watching the entertainment. While watching the Macy’s parade on TV, I’ll bake my grandmother’s chocolate silk pie for dessert.

We almost always have visitors! Some years, we have an exchange student staying with us, which is very special because as Thanksgiving is an American holiday, it’s their first time celebrating. Sometimes we have family visiting from up north, and sometimes a friend comes for the meal. And a few times, it’s been a mix of all of the above!

Some families enjoy putting up their Christmas trees after Thanksgiving dinner. And many people get dressed in the evening to get a head start on Black Friday sales! Other traditions may be watching seasonal movies, starting to play seasonal music, volunteering at a homeless shelter or nursing home, and going for a family hike in the afternoon. No matter what your traditions are, it’s fun to start some and to continue them throughout the years. Your kids will love looking back on these memories when they’re adults!

What are some of your favorite Thanksgiving traditions?

If you have a college student in your family, you may have enjoyed having her around for the past several weeks. Chances are that she either went back to school within the past few days, or else she’s going back this or next week, and while she might be excited, she’s also likely to feel a pang of letdown. Not only will she miss her family, but she’ll need to get “back to the grind” and will be once again living on cafeteria food and cramming for exams.

Just as she needed a bit of extra love and attention in September when she left for college, she might need a pick-me-up over the next few weeks. Here are some great ideas for care packages to send to your college student to let her know that you are thinking about her:

Remember the weather. Banish winter blues by sending along some toe socks, knitted mittens, or a crocheted hat. Your student might also like some moisturizer for dry skin caused by artificial heating in the dorms or some lip balm for chapped lips. Even packets of hot chocolate mix, instant coffee (or K-cups if she has a Keurig!), or teabags would make a good addition to your care package and will help her warm up on a cold winter day.

Food is always appreciated. You know her favorites, so send them along! Whether it’s homemade cookies, Rice Krispie treats, or a particular type of candy, including some of the things she likes in her care package will tell her that you know her well. Consider what types of cooking implements she has available to her; if she doesn’t have a microwave in her dorm, for example, don’t send microwavable popcorn.

Gift certificates can lift her spirits when money is low. Find out what types of establishments are nearby, and send along a gift certificate! If your student is counting on change to make it to the end of the month, she’s probably unable to afford dinner at a nicer restaurant; even going bowling or for coffee might be out of reach sometimes. Call local restaurants and entertainment facilities to find out how you can buy a gift certificate over the phone or via the web if you can’t buy one where you currently are.

A cold and flu survival kit might be especially timely. Since it’s still cold and flu season, your student will likely get sick one more time before spring has sprung. If she calls sniffling, sneezing or coughing, send a box of vitamin C, cough drops or sore throat lozenges, a few cans of chicken soup, her favorite tea, tissues, honey, and perhaps a DVD you think she’d like.

Something random and whimsical can brighten a dreary day. How about something like a bright and colorful pillowcase, a new pair of slippers, drawings from all of the younger siblings and cousins, or some pretty stationery, pens and stamps? If you see something you think she might like at a discount store, pick it up and send it for no reason at all!

What were some of your favorite care packages that you received while in college? If you have a college student, what are his or her favorite items to get in the mail?

September is here! Summer may be coming to an end but there are deals to be had.

Now the kids are back in school (or returning after this upcoming weekend, if you live in an area that goes back after Labor Day) and most of the nation is back to wearing real shoes and opening their windows during the day. You might be thinking ahead to shopping for the winter holidays, or you might just be recuperating from checking off all of the items of your kids’ school supply lists! Either way, there are a few things you might find on sale in September:

Summer Clothing

Stores are pulling their summer items off of the shelves to make room for fall and winter wear, so the selection of summer wear is lower than it has been in previous months. Still, you might find good deals on clearance racks at your favorite stores. Labor Day sales will knock prices down even further, so this might be a good time to grab bathing suits and a few sundresses for next year. Big names like Kohls, Macys, REI, Old Navy and many more have lots of deals.

Appliances

Many manufacturers put out their new lines of appliances in the fall, which means that stores need to get rid of washers, dryers and refrigerators from last season. This makes September a great time to get a great deal on home appliances. We had the hardest time finding a new refrigerator when our broke but Home Depot had the best sales and their financing was even better.

Outdoor Equipment

Now that summer is winding to a close, the demand for items like bicycles, grills, Patio Furniture and lawn mowers has gone way down, making it the prime time to buy for next year’s summer season. In many places of the country, you’ll have a month or more of nice weather before you need to pack your new items away for the winter.

Mattresses and Furniture

Labor day mattress sales are available at just about every major store and also furniture. Make sure to check your favorite store app or circular to compare the deals. Also, mattresses only go on sale 2 times a year! Usually, one time during April or May and the other time is over Labor Day!

Electronics

Since it is back to school time you will still find deals on laptops, airpods, and many more electronics.

Fall Produce

One of the best things about fall is the start of the harvest season! Now’s the time to save big on winter squash, apples, pears, blueberries, and corn. Tomato and zucchini season are drawing to a close, but you might still be able to get some on sale in September at farmers’ markets or pick-your-own farms.

There are some things to not count on getting this month, as well: Laptops, televisions and other items that will be popular at Christmastime might be marked up now. If you can wait on these types of items, they’re likely to go on sale closer to Thanksgiving, and certainly for the Black Friday sales.

Happy September Shopping!
