Green Throttle to unleash gaming potential of the Android in your pocket

Come March or April, when the US$99 Ouya games console should see release, Android will have stepped out of the mobile sphere and into a dainty little cube residing in the broad proximity of the television. But even before Ouya has had a chance to assert itself in the market, Charles Huang, co-creator of the Guitar Hero series of games, has muddied the water with a different approach to putting Android games on the TV – one that assumes millions of us already have the console itself in our pockets: an Android smartphone. It's called Green Throttle, and it's about as simple as an app and an analog controller.

Both Ouya and Green Throttle are intended with disposable, mobile-style game experiences in mind. That the games are played on a larger screen is touted as an advantage, but it's a social more than a technological one. It's a means of restoring gaming as a shared experience, rather than flaunting the consoles' graphical prowess (… gaming powerhouses these ain't).

If Green Throttle's creators argue that it will offer gaming experiences superior to mobile devices, this has much more to do with the nuanced input that the twin-stick analog controller will allow. Much like the Ouya's, in fact, Green Throttle's Atlas controller will look familiar to console gamers, bearing a strong resemblance as it does to the Xbox 360's (which, for now at least, seems to have been settled on as an ideal form for twin-stick controls).

"The ability to add true analog controllers allows the precision that touch screen controls just can’t deliver for the sophisticated control of our characters," said Taehoon Kim, CEO of game developer nWay. "Adding controllers to the mobile version of ChronoBlade allows users to experience the game the way it was meant to be played; bringing a true console-like proposition."

It's probably an understatement to say that there's an element of PR bluster to that quote, but anyone who's struggled to play a traditional console-style game on a touchscreen mobile device using an on-screen approximation of analog thumbsticks and buttons will recognize the kernel of truth to this sentiment.

There are some hardware limitations to consider, though. Your Android phone will need to be connectable to your TV's HDMI input, though the Green Throttle website currently lists the current compatible devices as the Google Galaxy Nexus, HTC One X, Samsung GALAXY S II and the Galaxy Note. The Atlas controller requires Android 3.2 or later, and users will need to download Green Throttle's Arena App that will showcase compatible games.

Green Throttle seems to offer some distinct advantages over Ouya. Given that millions of people already own the device will power the system is clearly an advantage. Even better, though, is that this may be the first home games system to transcend hardware obsolescence. People upgrade their smartphones much more frequently than they do their games consoles. With Green Throttle, your next new phone is your new console. Current generation smartphones may not quite offer top-drawer graphics, but who's to say that will always be the case?

Huang co-founded the company behind the platform, Green Throttle Games, with mobile hardware magi Matt Crowley (formerly of Palm and Nokia) and Karl Townsend (Palm). On Tuesday the company announced the opening of its development portal with access to hardware and software development kits.

Green Throttle Games is hoping to ship kits to developers around December 12. Kits vary in price according to how many Atlas controllers you'd like: US$44.95 for one, up to $349.95 for 10. They're working on iOS support too.

Whether Green Throttle and Ouya will duke it out directly remains to be seen. But at least as interesting will be seeing how mobile devices (and indeed cloud services) disrupt – or perhaps eventually destroy – the traditional console market.

Nokia's New Rumored Device Lumia 830 AKA FLAME

The Nokia Lumia 830 has appeared in leaked pictures online, but reports it'll be a budget WIndows Phone 8 handset are rather unlikely.

Images appeared on Chinese website WPDang showing the Lumia 830 in five different hues, but precious little information accompanied them (and WPDang has a hit and miss reputation with leaks).

Some have suggested the Lumia 830 could be the Windows Phone 8 successor to the Nokia Lumia 710(previously Nokia Lumia flame was rumored to replace Nokia 710)

Rumours were also there regarding a new lumia device named Lumia flame. Its was also rumored in around the month of September that it is in works.

13 new features in Windows Phone 8

1. Windows Phone 8: It's Windows 8's sister, not Windows Phone 7 +1

Windows Phone 8 is a close relative of Windows 8. It's not a development of Windows Phone 7.
Technically, Windows Phone 8 will be based on the same kernel as Windows 8: it's not a development of Windows Phone 7 (or even the stunted offspring Windows Phone 7.8). Windows Phone 8 and Windows 8 share a lot: a common file system and drivers, as well as security components and media and graphics support. It's as close to Windows 8 Pro as is Windows RT - they are three separate operating systems with a common interface based on the same code.
What that means to Windows Phone users is that their smartphone will be able to work with their PC in an unprecedented manner. You'll be able to run some of the same programs - Internet Explorer 10 being the poster child for this. Microsoft claims that IE 10 will be the fastest and most secure mobile browser around - and you'll be able to share it across multiple Windows devices.

2. Windows Phone 8: Multi-core processing

So Windows Phone 8 should be zippy, with the right processors.

The principal benefit of multi-core processing from a user point of view is that background multi-tasking should become a cinch, and general speed when using your phone for multiple tasks should increase. Windows Phone developers face the challenge of living up to this promise, however.

3. Windows Phone 8: New display resolutions up to 1280x768

For which, read: more screen for gaming and watching movies. Windows Phone 8 allows support for two new resolutions, 1280x768 at 15:9 ratio, and 1280x720 at 16:9. It's important to understand that this represents the maximum that the software will allow, and is in no way a minimum you should expect from Windows phones: the calibre of screen is largely dictated by the hardware.

But the fact is that with a 4in screen using one of these resolutions a putative Windows Phone 8 device would have a Retina quality display. This capability puts Windows Phone 8 in with the big boys such as the iPhone 5 and Samsung Galaxy S3.

4. Windows Phone 8: MicroSD storage expansion

Windows Phone users of the world: rejoice. You are no longer limited to the amount of onboard storage with which your handset's manufacturer deigned to bless you. Windows Phone 8 supports MicroSD cards, meaning that it will be relatively inexpensive and straightforward to boost the storage in your phone.

5. Windows Phone 8: NFC support

Take that, iPhone 5. Windows Phone 8 will include NFC support. What do you mean you don't know what that means?

In essence, NFC is just another way for phone to communicate with other devices that are physically close by. In practice this means you can use your phone as a digital wallet, simply tapping an in-store payment pad in order to debit your account and make a purchase. It may sound far fetched, but so did the idea of mobile TV just a few years ago.

Microsoft has added to Windows Phone 8 what it is calling the Wallet Hub. Through this banks, stores and loyalty schemes will be able to create a simple way for you to log in and pay for things with a simple tap.

Again, this is potential that requires both third-party developers and mobile carriers to step up and do their part. But expect NFC to be a big win for Windows Phone 8 in the medium term.

6. Windows Phone 8: It's easy for app makers

Windows Phone 8 offers Native code support for C and C++, as well as simplified porting from platforms such as Android, Symbian, and iOS, and simplified porting of Windows 8 apps to Windows Phone 8. The bottom line: Windows Phone desperately needs apps, and Microsoft is bending over backwards to make it easy for developers to get them into the Windows Store.

Importantly, Windows Phone 8 also supports in-app purchases. App makers tend to be a lot more focussed when there is money to be made.

Subsequent to writing this, I've been informed by many, many developers that I may have been naive in my view of Microsoft's efforts to make it easy to develop Windows Phone apps. Microsoft thinks it is making things easy, but I'm told there is a lack of information, and no SDK, which is making it near impossible to code apps in time for the launch. Apologies! Perhaps this section should have been headed: Microsoft needs to make it easy for app makers.

7. Windows Phone 8: Nokia maps

Good news: no Apple Maps. Bad news: no native Google Maps. But fear not, Windows Phone 8 includes Nokia's mapping technology. This supports offline maps and turn-by-turn directions using global NAVTEQ mapping data. It's high quality, in essence.

8. Windows Phone 8: Onboard security, remote management

Pay attention at the back. Windows Phone 8 comes with native 128-bit Bitlocker encryption, and a Secure Boot mode. Given the importance of protecting our personal data, this may or may not excite you. But it will get your workplace's network admin all fired up.

Expect to see Windows Phones in plenty of offices not least because, like BlackBerrys, Windows Phones will make remote management easy, letting sys admins roll out updates to a whole fleet of phones (you can't do that with iPhones, and Android phones are a business and security nightmare). And when you can run Windows on all devices, life gets a lot easier and more secure for IT support.

Indeed, throw in over the air support for Windows Phone updates, plus a promised 18 month support for those updates, and you can see that Microsoft is going out of its way to make Windows Phone 8 devices attractive to business. Now all they have to do is get Nokia and the other manufacturers to make the handsets sufficiently desirable to entice the MD to listen to the CIO about phone-purchasing decisions.

9. Windows Phone 8: VoIP (mostly meaning Skype)

Microsoft is baking in VoIP and video chat integration into any voice- or video-calling app. In essence this means that VoIP (in most cases the Skype service) will work just like any other kind of call, only without the costs. You won't need to boot a specific app in order to utilise internet calling.

10. Windows Phone 8: 'Lenses', your aperture to a better camera

Windows Phone 8 offers access a bunch of different filters, known as Lenses. You can grab these from the Windows Store, and then get creative in the native camera app (or, indeed, an third-party camera apps). Developer support allowing, this should allow hobbyist photographers to get creative with their smartphone in a way not previously seen.

The native camera app is changing, too. There's now pinch to zoom, and additional flash options.

11. Windows Phone 8: Native screen capture

It's possible this is something of more importance to tech journalists than to actual humans, but Windows Phone 8 puts a simple means of capturing screenshots on to every device. Hold down the power and home buttons at the same time and you can capture a picture of what is on your screen. Simple, but useful.

12. Windows Phone 8: A fresh Start Screen, with more options

One of the big moans about existing Windows Phones is the lack of customisation with regard to the (admittedly good looking) home screens. Windows Phone 8 rectifies this, to an extent. The Start Screen still features the familiar Moder UI live tiles, but there is the option to change the tiles' size, move them around and change the colour scheme.

In fact you can now choose from up to 20 colour schemes. Which is nice.

13.Windows Phone 8: Lock screen notifications

It's expected now, but a welcome upgrade nonetheless. When your phone is locked, apps can push notifications on to the lock screen. If you like what you see you can dive straight in and respond.

With the beautiful but pricey physical keyboard cover (rather than the sexy but disappointing touch keyboard cover) and the desktop intact – this does truly offer a glimpse into a world where you can take a truly portable device that will be as cool for leisure as it is efficient for work.

To balance that, Surface is also infuriatingly buggy, overly heavy, and not half as intuitive as it would like to be. That's largely down to the refreshingly different but occasionally jarring Windows RT that it runs, but also because of some design choices that will suit many but alienate others. Also, there's the price point that, once you include one of the clearly vital keyboard covers, puts it firmly in iPad's premium slate territory.

Indeed, the first thing that strikes you upon picking up the Surface is that this is a big tablet. The screen size is 10.6 inches in 16:9 ratio and sat next to a new iPad 3 you can see that Microsoft has taken a very different stance to Apple in the sizing of its device.

That size , to some, will be a major issue, namely weight. Microsoft insists that the balance of the device means that it feels lighter than its actual weight but, of course, this is just so much marketing talk.

The Surface weighs in at 1.5 pounds or 0.68 kg, which absolutely sits it in the portable category but fairly quickly becomes uncomfortable to hold with one hand. It's only slightly weightier than its Apple rival, but we criticized the new iPad for its bulk and the criticism is valid.

But the weight does play a part in making the Surface feel like a solid and well-built device. In fact, everything about the build quality of the Surface shouts about quality – the bevelled edges, the decision to go for more angles and less curve and the robust feeling physical keys included.

Microsoft's Panos Pany took a big risk by dropping his Surface on stage at the official unveiling – which illustrates the confidence that the company has in the product and that the Gorilla Glass 2 can take a bit of an impact.

The next note of import is the kickstand, which flips out of the back of the device to prop the screen up at a 22 degrees -– a decent angle that will feel comfortable more often than not. It has been fitted with hinges that make a satisfying clunk when you use them – it's a nice touch that confirms the details are being properly addressed by Microsoft.

When the device is propped up the keyboards come into their own. Let's start by saying you would be entirely nuts to buy a Surface without paying extra for one of the two keyboard covers that frankly, feel pretty integral to the entire device.

The Touch Cover is certainly a looker, with magnets satisfyingly clicking into place when attached and, when folded, adding to the premium feel and sitting flat both open and closed.

As you would expect, the Touch Cover keyboard turns off when folded behind.

As a keyboard it's going to take some getting used to. The general consensus among the people we have spoken to is that when the adjustment is made, this is a perfectly okay cover. But, this is a little disappointing given the hefty price tag of $120/£100/$AU120.

On the bright side, the touch pad is responsive and the cover doesn't feel like it adds huge amounts of bulk to the device.

Then you have the Type cover which gives you physical keys and, to our taste, is a phenomenal keyboard but at the cost of a little more bulk.

Again, the magnetic clips work well, although the keys do feel strange when folded behind, with the Touch having a distinctly nice feel when not in use.

But when you're using the keyboard, the Touch is an absolute dream. For anyone doubting whether the Surface would be useable for work purposes we suggest you try it out for yourself – it's comparable and, to some tastes, preferable to most laptop keyboards.

Price wise, it's a tad more expensive than the Touch at $130, £110, $AU 130, so factor this into your buying decision.

Staying on the physical side of the tablet we move onto the button and ports. As already mentioned the buttons feel robust – although the Windows logo button is not clickable but a touch, which can feel a little non-satisfactory.

Ports wise, the Surface is going to be the envy of many of the tablets out there. First up, the micro SDXC slot means you can slide an extra 64GB of storage into your device – which is a major boon for those with big media collections.

The there's the full size USB 2.0, HD video port and cover port – all of which will be welcomed for both leisure and more serious work.

Onto the innards and the most important place to start is with the ARM designed Nvidia Tegra 3 processor and 2GB of RAM. The latter in particular puts this beyond many rival tablets, and the Windows RT running on ARM rather than the familiar Intel x86 platform brings benefits in terms of power usage.

The tablet certainly feels snappy enough, with the five point multi-touch not giving the device pause and the menus easy enough to zip through with no evidence of slowdown.

However, when flicking between desktop and modern touch user interface we did manage to crash the tablet twice and cause some rather strange bugs when we were putting two processes side by side.

You would hope that this is down to teething troubles, and certainly many of the apps that crashed out when on RT seem to be going through effective stability updates.

Windows 8's dual interfaces were always going to be a little jarring when transitioning between the two – but for those who wondered if RT was better off sticking to just the Modern touch interface, but the Office apps alone manage to have it make a little sense.

Saying that, there were some issues, such as not being able to click the too-small red x to close a folder and the fact that the modern IE10 browser did not save history for the desktop to use. That didn't do a lot to convince us that this isn't two UIs somewhat clumsily taped together.

The cameras are given big billing on the Surface, but we found the quality a little poor when we trialled both the front and rear offerings. The angles of the kickstand mean that this could be a really handy recording device, but low light performance was poor.

Much cooler was the way in which the USB port can be used to quickly put files and photos on the device where you can share them to your heart's content. It's a neat and elegant solution that again underlines the utility of the device.

And the inclusion of things like Xbox Music, films and an ecosystem that does not exclude other people's stores and subscription offerings make this a fine media device.

In summation, the Surface is not a perfect device, but it is a perfectly lovely one. It is never going to have the cool factor of the iPad – but it certainly brings a layer of utility that will make it a very attractive option.

In fact, we can see people who are keen to do more serious things deciding that the Surface is the tablet for them, and a fair few people who want the very fine leisure aspects but are not keen to wall themselves into Apple's garden.

So, well built, well-conceived and well-designed, but also large, pricey and with a few flaws to overcome.

Given the success of the Xbox, Microsoft's move into tablet hardware always made a lot of sense – and our early impressions are that the Surface will be a major player in the increasingly competitive tabloid market.

The pricing means that this is going to be compared to the iPad, but it will be the versatility and utility that mark Surface out as one to watch in the coming months and years.

Be careful with salad dressings, mayonnaise, and other condiments that are high in fat content. They greatly increase the calorie count and can negate the healthy aspects of a meal. Replace mayonnaise-based condiments with fat-free alternatives like fat-free yogurt, mustard, ketchup and barbecue sauce.
And remember, a gram of fat contains more than twice as many calories as a gram of protein or carbohydrate.
Too Little of a Good ThingBut don't try to eliminate fat altogether, as dietary fat is necessary to maintain a healthy body. It is a vital component for building body tissue and cells, and it aids in the absorption of some vitamins and other nutrients. Many people eat too much of the bad fats, but also eat too little of the good fats required for optimal health.
Exercise RegularlyPeople who exercise regularly not only lose weight faster, they are more successful at keeping it off. Exercise makes it possible to create a calorie deficit and lose weight without starving your body and slowing your metabolism.
At home, at the gym, or playing sports, participate in both aerobic and strength building activities on a regular basis. Not only does the exercise itself burn calories, but your body will continue to burn calories at a higher rate even after you're done exercising.
If walking is all you can do, then walk because it's great for you. But muscle burns more calories than fat, so put on a little muscle if you can and you will burn more calories just sitting there... looking good.
But don't sit too long. The human body is good at adapting. If you dig ditches without gloves, you will develop calluses to protect your hands. If you sit too long, you will develop extra padding to keep you comfortable!
Take It EasyUnless you are excited to be following a very specific diet and exercise plan, do not try and change too much too fast. If you have been eating poorly and not exercising, both your body and your mind will have a lot of adjusting to do.
All the sugar and fat were actually quite enjoyable, and sitting on the couch didn't feel too bad, either. If you try and change everything too quickly the odds are greater that you will feel bad, get discouraged, and give up. So be patient.
A time will come when a healthy snack will taste as good as the junk food you felt bad about eating, and you will look forward to your regular exercise.

Microsoft Tests "Smart Home" With HomeOS

Microsoft is looking to unify electrical appliances within the home and establish itself in the burgeoning “smart home” market with the development of HomeOS. Essentially a lightweight “smart home” operating system that aims to make it easy for users to manage their home networks and ease the creation of applications by third party developers, HomeOS is designed to provide a central hub through which various household devices can be controlled.

Like a personal computer that instantly recognizes attached devices such as a USB mouse, Microsoft is seeking to overcome the problem of getting various, currently incompatible devices to communicate with each other. This would make adding new devices to the network as simple as plugging in a USB mouse to a computer.

The current prototype HomeOS system, which includes support for devices such as light switches, security cameras and TVs, is a Windows system running on US$350 worth of hardware through which all commands are relayed. Microsoft Research has demonstrated the simplicity and intuitiveness of the system using the HomeMaestro app on a Windows Phone that lets users set up “rules” that trigger an appliance – turning on a lamp when opening a door, for example. These rules can also be chained together to perform more complex behaviors involving multiple devices.

Google’s Android@Home project promises similar functionality, but maybe Microsoft’s ace in the hole will come from the HomeOS Homestore. Following in the footsteps of Apple’s App Store and Google’s Android Market, this is an app store of sorts that will allow users to find and install third party apps. Like the Android model, developers can target a type of device of a single device, meaning users will have the benefit of apps made for niche devices.

With the amount of technology now found in the average home only set to increase, it seems it’s only a matter of time before someone is able to bring the various devices together under the one roof, as it were.

While Microsoft certainly has the financial and technological teeth to put it in a good position to lead the smart home charge, there's still quite a few steps it needs to make before HomeOS is ready for primetime. As it will probably struggle to launch a home revolution on the back of the struggling Windows Phone platform alone, making the “Home Maestro” home control app compatible with Android and iOS would probably be a good start.

MIT students turn whole building into huge game of Tetris

The two-hundred and ninety-five feet (ninety meter) tall Building 54 on MIT's Cambridge campus has become the canvas for a number of carefully planned and daringly executed visual displays over the years, not strictly allowed by the administration but often looked upon with some appreciation. The building is home to the Institute's Department of Earth, Atmospheric, and Planetary Science (EAPS) and has a host of meteorological instruments and radio communications equipment on its roof - but its the grid-like windows to the front that have become the main attraction to hackers, as they are known. The latest hack is the successful realization of a long-standing challenge, a huge playable game of Tetris.

No doubt most readers are familiar with Tetris. First developed in Russia, the ubiquitous tile-matching video game has players rotate and move random geometrically-shaped blocks as they fall from the top of the screen to try and make gap-free horizontal lines at the bottom. When a full line is created, it disappears from the matrix playing area but lines containing gaps remain onscreen until there's no more room for the blocks to fall and the game is lost. I first discovered the strangely addictive game on an Amiga system, then later on a Nokia mobile phone but it's appeared on many platforms in a number of different variations.

Looking up at the windows to the front of the 21-story MIT building - which is also known as the Green Building (named after its principal donor, Cecil Howard Green, and not because of any environmental ticks in the plus column) - it's not too difficult to understand why a Tetris hack has become central to the IHTFP hacking community. The windows are arranged in an 18 x 9 grid, not quite the 20 cells high and 10 cells wide that's become a display standard for the game but close enough.

As is common with MIT IHTFP hacks, those involved haven't given away how the game of Tetris was achieved but the visual evidence suggests the placement of multi-color LED lighting modules in each of the windows to form a 9 x 17 grid display, with gameplay wirelessly controlled from a console pad at ground level.

Ahead of gameplay, the word TETRIS was scrolled across the middle section of the display grid and the game itself consisted of three levels. The first featured block shapes of vivid coloring, the second threw in some paler hues and the last involved changing the block colors as they descended. When the luck of the player on the ground ran out and the game was lost, all of the blocks would tumble down the grid screen.

The source link has some links to videos taken of the hack, which do show a few dead "pixels" in the grid but this doesn't detract from a hugely impressive visual treat.

Other hacks of note include a huge VU meter on display during a concert in 1993, a huge illuminated Oscar to celebrate a double win for the film Good Will Hunting in 1998 and an American flag for the tenth anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.

Kahuna Creations' Bombora is designed for street surfing

Several years ago, Utah-based Kahuna Creations innovated a sport it calls "land paddling." With the simple addition of a balled paddle, longboard skaters have been able to paddle their way around asphalt and concrete, bringing the burgeoning sport of stand-up paddleboarding onto dry land. Kahuna is now updating its land paddling line with a purpose-built longboard modeled after one of its surfboards. The new Bombora Longboard uses a big, surf-style design to make for what is reportedly a smooth, intuitive ride.

If you look at the board, you'll immediately notice it has a shape distinct from the typical longboard. The board is shaped after Kahuna's Black Coral Classic Surfboard, and unlike other longboards, it's purpose-built for land paddling.

Not only does the board use a more surf-styled shape, but it's practically as long as a surfboard. At just under 5 feet long (1.5 m) and 14 inches (35.6 cm) wide, the Bombora gives you a big, stable platform for making swooping, stick-assisted carves. Kahuna marketing manager Cory McBride told us that it's wide enough to stand on with both feet pointing forward, the same stance you'd use on a water-based paddleboard. It's also long enough to walk back and forth on.

The Bombora has 70-mm wheels, 10-inch trucks and carved out wheel wells to eliminate wheel bite. It's crafted from Baltic birch and weighs 17 lbs (7.7 kg). Dedicated land paddlers can get their Bombora boards now for US$250.

IKEA reveals KNÄPPA cardboard digital camera

If you've got a craving for cheap Swedish meatballs or self assembly furniture, IKEA is normally a safe bet. But despite announcing its new "UPPLEVA "hybrid furniture"range, IKEA probably wouldn't be your first stop when looking for consumer electronics … and that's not going to change with the unveiling of the KNÄPPA flat-pack cardboard digital camera.

That's because the KNÄPPA - which runs on two AA batteries and can hold 40 x 2.3 megapixel images - isn't another move by the Swedish furniture giant into selling digital gizmos. IKEA is keen not to confuse us on this point: "Just to be clear, this isn’t a move into selling any digital equipment."

Instead, limited numbers of the 4.13 x 2.56-inch (105 × 65 mm) camera will be given away in IKEA stores to promote the new PS 2012 furniture collection - with the aim being that shoppers will use it to share images of the furniture range in their own homes (though hopefully not still in hundreds of parts).

Designed by Jesper Kouthoofd, the recyclable camera is made out of one piece of folded cardboard which is secured by two plastic screws. A single circuit board holds all the electronics, camera sensor and integrated USB connector. There is a combined on/off and shutter button on the front - holding it down for a few seconds turns the KNÄPPA on or off and a "firm click" takes a photo.

The performance of the KNÄPPA isn't likely to worry the likes of Nikon or Canon. It shoots decidedly lo-fi images (think a 2004 camera-phone) and IKEA jokes about the lack of functions in the promo video below - to use the "zoom function" you simply extend your arms, and "advanced image stabilization" involves resting the resting the camera on a chair.

Once 40 photos have been taken, users plug the 2.3 megapixel camera - billed as “the world's cheapest digital camera” - into a USB port and transfer the images in the normal manner. Images can then be deleted from the camera by using a paperclip to press the delete button on the front for about five seconds.

Test drive: Ford Focus Electric

Recently in New York City, Ford invited a handful of journalists to take a brand new

Ford Focus Electric for a spin around the west side of Manhattan. But before we got behind the wheel, Eric Kuehn, Chief Nameplate Engineer for the Focus Electric gave us the low-down on what's new in this EV.

Kuehn made it pretty clear that Ford is looking to compete more aggressively with the Nissan Leaf with this iteration, which the automaker claims can go from no juice to fully charged in half the time (around 4 hours) - using of Ford's 240-volt charging station that costs an additional US$1,500 - while also getting a better single-charge range of about 76 miles (122 km).

At the core of the electric Focus, is a pair of 600 pound (272 kg) liquid-cooled lithium-ion 23 kilowatt hour batteries. Fortunately, there's an app for managing them.

MyFord Mobile features prominently in Ford's pitch for its electric vehicle with an app to help plan trips, manage charging and locate charging stations along the way. Another cool new digital bonus is a feature Ford calls "butterflies," a fun little gimmick that pops up butterflies on the dashboard display to indicate surplus range is available.

Kuehn explained that learning to brake early and easily and taking advantage of the Focus Electric's regenerative braking is the best way to boost your butterfly count. It's a technique that takes a little getting used to, as you'll see in the video of my test drive below.

The suspension was a little tight, probably something to do with all the extra weight in those batteries, and it's not the roomiest compact around, but it sure had more pickup than other electric vehicles.

Coming to an e-book near you - LG's flexible e-paper display

Like most display manufacturers, LG has kept a finger in the flexible e-paper pie. Now, however, the company has announced that its six-inch XGA resolution Electronic Paper Display (EPD) is now in full production, and should be in devices bound for Europe within the next month.

LG's new plastic EPD, claimed to be the world's first in mass production, takes the form of a plastic substrate that is 0.7 millimeters (0.027 in) thick, about 2/3 the thickness of glass EPD devices. At 14 grams (0.49 oz) in weight, the new display comes in at less than half the weight of glass-based alternatives. However, the flexibility is what causes the plastic EPD to step up as a game changer. The rugged device will bend as much as 40 degrees from the plane of the display, will survive blows from a small urethane hammer and repeated drops from a height of 1.5 meters (4.92 ft).

"With the world's first plastic EPD, LG Display has once again proven its reputation for leadership and innovation with a product we believe will help greatly popularize the E-Book market," said Mr. Sang Duck Yeo, Head of Operations for LG Display's Mobile/OLED division. "Based on our success in mass-producing plastic EPD, we are excited as we look toward applying concepts from this experience to future developments like plastic OLED and flexible displays."

LG says it was able to adapt conventional LCD manufacturing technology to the production of the new product by reducing the process temperature of the LCD process to a level that the polymer structures of the plastic EPD could tolerate. The new display is to be shipped to Chinese ODMs, who hope to supply product to Europe by, according to the March 29 press release, "the beginning of next month."

Between concert keepsakes, sorority and club uniforms, and the crazy and hilarious selection at Urban Outfitters, I’ve managed to stockpile probably 50 t-shirts over the last couple of years! Sure, they’re comfortable, and awesome for lazy days (or even to sleep in!) but what’s a girl to do when she wants to rock a tee AND still look stylish?

Yes ladies, you can have your cake and eat it too. Today, I’m going to share a few different ways you can rock your favorite t-shirt and still look unique and cute for class. Read on!

1. Add a Cute Jacket

One of the most basic ways to spruce up a t-shirt is by pairing it with a cute structured jacket or a cardigan, as opposed to a frumpy hoodie. Small details, like adding a ring, fishtail braiding your hair instead of throwing it into a sloppy ponytail, and wearing gladiator sandals instead of flip flops can make all the difference in how you look and feel. The best part is, these little extras take just seconds to add — you’ll look great, but still make it to class on time.

2. Try It with a Skirt

Another easy way to wear a t-shirt and still look cute is to tuck it into a skirt. I especially like this pretty pink circle skirt since it’s slightly high-waisted – it’s dressy enough to wear on a date or look put-together in class, but isn’t so fancy that you compromise comfort. Pair this look with wedges — stilettos can look strange with something as casual as a graphic tee — and finish the look with a quirky fedora and statement ring.

3. Go for an Androgynous Look

The relaxed look and feel of your favorite tee will look great with a pair of boyfriend jeans and a few deliberately placed menswear accessories. Experiment with beanies, classic leather belts, different pairs of casual shoes, and menswear timepieces. You’ll look casual and comfy, but not sloppy. Finish with a handy messenger bag.

4. Try It with a Vest

A denim vest is a fun, unexpected way to add a rock and roll feel to an otherwise basic jeans-and-tee look. This look is especially chic with a concert t-shirt, or printed pants! Finish off the outfit with a bold pair of shoes, eye-catching earrings, and a tough-looking bracelet.

5. Pair It with a Maxi Skirt

One way to make good use out of your maxi skirt is to pair it with a t-shirt. Make sure the tee isn’t too busy, and knot it right where the skirt begins for an ultra-chic look. Finish the outfit with a headscarf, classy ring, and ballet flats.

First Google Tablet Releasing this July 2012 !!

Google, the Search god is now going to release it's first tablet computer inJuly,2012. Earlier it was claimed to be there by May,2012 with a price tag of $249, but Google decided to lower its price from the present $249 and so now releasing it inJuly,2012.

It'll now be available for Price within $149 to$249.

Eric Schmidt, Google's Chairperson said,

"The Company plans to market a tablet of the highest quality" as with the comparison with Apple's iPad. :D

Google's tablet has been made collaboration with Taiwan's asustek computer which has a 7-inch screen size, with a Nvidia tegra 3 Quad-Core Processor and with a Wi-Fi only!
