*I personally use a legal size envelope and write down all of the rebates that I’d like to do and keep the printed rebate forms and coupons inside that envelope.  I usually try to get all of the items at Super Walmart (as I don’t have a lot of other choices around here).  I then checkout at a Self-Checkout lane and purchase each item individually as I’ll need a separate receipt for each item to send in. It is easiest to use a gift card for purchase as to not hassle with cash or a debit/credit card for each transaction. When you can get a discounted gift card for less than the actual value (available from Plastic Jungle &/or Ebay), you save/make even more money!

I had a central vacuum system installed in my new house thinking it would be convenient, but I thought wrong. It’s a pain to lug the 30 foot extension up and down stairs and around the house. Now if they’d just include a maid to actually use them here, I’d be set.

I am very big on home made gifts at Christmas time. I always scour flea markets, yard sales and thrift stores for jars, fabric ribbon and any little decorations to spice up my Recipes in a Jar mixes. They are so easy to make and really do make a nice gift. This is my favorite one of all time and I wanted to share it with you.  Please read below the recipe for some tips on how to make your gift in a jar pretty and also a free printable label for this recipe.

Christmas Hazelnut Balls Mix in a Jar

Layer the following in a 1-quart:

2 cups all-purpose flour
4 tablespoons granulated sugar
1/4 teaspoon salt
2 cups hazelnuts

Attach the following recipe on a gift tag (or print label*):

Christmas Hazelnut Balls:

Empty contents of jar into a large bowl. Add 1 cup softened butter and 2 teaspoons vanilla extract. Combine well by using a large wooden spoon or your hands to mix thoroughly. Refrigerate dough for 30 minutes.

Form dough into 1 1/4-inch balls. Do not make them too large or they will not cook properly. Place 1 inch apart on ungreased cookie sheet. Bake in preheated 375 degree F oven for 15-20 minutes or until set but not brown. Do not over-bake. Let stand 1 minute in pan then remove to wire rack. Cool until barely warm.

Roll in sifted confectioners sugar. Cool completely, then just before serving, roll again in the confectioners’ sugar.

Yield: about 40 balls

Decorating Tips:
If you have some or would like to purchase some fabric squares in between the screw top and the lid make a pretty presentation. Just place the square over the lid and then screw the top on.

I always look out for little doo dads like bells, santas, etc. Then when I tie the recipe card on I add one on the ribbon.

Another thing I have done is bought a really pretty basket, added a wooden spoon, powdered sugar, and wax paper. Then I place the jar mix in and wrap it up in a basket bag.

*Label Directions:
You can print this on regular printer paper or card stock.
Label was saved at 300DPI for crisp printing.
Cut a piece of red, green, etc construction paper bigger then the label. I use pretty edged scissors on them. ( also, this is a great thing to get the kids in on.) Using a glue stick rub glue on the back of the label. Stick the label on the construction paper. Using a hole puncher, punch a hole in the upper corner. Slide on to ribbon and then tie onto jar.

Coupons and coupon codes are all over the internet. They often offer up to (and sometimes more than) 50% off at your favorite high street retailers. You may have come across them before, but if you haven’t then simply search by store here.

You may find that some retailers actually offer you coupons after you have purchased something. If this is the case, and you don’t need to buy anything else, then let one of your friends have the coupon – help them save money, and they may return the favour!

2.      Don’t be tempted to buy things you don’t need

If you find that your expenditure is too high each month, then it may be because you are buying things you don’t need.

We all get tempted to buy things, but before you get your money out, have a think about whether you really need the thing you are buying. In most cases, you won’t! The only reason you want it is because it looks good – remember, the shop will want to sell you items, so they will strategically place things around the store to influence you to impulse buy.

3.      Stick to a strict budget

Create a strict budget, and stick to it! If you don’t stick to a budget, how are you going to lower your expenditure? Write down everything you spend each month and take a look at where you are spending too much. If you can, make cut backs – it should lower your expenditure considerably.

4.      Try shopping online

If you haven’t already tried it, then why not give online shopping a go? Most supermarkets have their own ‘online shop’ where you can do your weekly grocery shopping – and what’s more, you will get it delivered to your door!

Online shopping should help you lower your expenditure quite a lot – this is because you can’t be tempted to pick things up, as you won’t actually be in the store. In addition, you won’t be walking down every aisle to get what you need – you will be able to find it by entering it into the search box.

5.      Cancel any subscriptions you don’t need

Do you really need that magazine subscription? Or how about that satellite TV subscription? Think about how much you could lower your expenditure by if you simply cancelled these. If you really can’t do without them, then at least try and cut back…for example, instead of having two magazine subscriptions, just have one!

6. Receive the Latest Scoop
Sign up for your favorite store’s email newsletters and you’ll be ready to pounce the moment your item is marked down.

7. Buy on Layaway
With people unwilling to put more on their credit cards, this thrifty practice from the 1950s is making a comeback. Unlike credit cards, the idea of layaway is to pay off the merchandise in installments before you take it home. See something you like at Kmart but can’t afford it right now? Put a down payment on through Kmart’s layaway program, make biweekly payments in the store and take it home at the end of eight weeks. The only interest you’ll pay is a $5 fee. Sears has a similar program.

8. Send E-Cards

9. Shop Early
For the best online sales of the season, they suggest to do most of your shopping on Cyber Monday, November 30th.  I personally suggest shopping online Black Friday to avoid the crowds, as most online stores will have the same sales that they have offline.
