Pre-Avatar: 1982

A friend of mine and I "enjoy" 3-D on television in 1982, when there was a boomlet of local stations showing 3-D films such as "Creature from the Black Lagoon" using the anaglyph method, which used red and blue lenses to separate the images rather than the polarized system originally used in the theaters thirty years earlier. I say "enjoy" because the effect was problematic. If you had your color adjusted correctly it was possible to get a moderate dimensional effect out of the blur. With my never-rectified amblyopia, I could get it mostly when things were flying at the camera.

We're watching it on my Advent VideoBeam, no longer in the basement of my folks' house, but in my new digs in Petaluma. Fans of the yellow lamp will notice that it's already starting to deteriorate, the hinge holding the middle shade being secured with duct tape. Another indication of the absence of parental caregiving is the burst cushion of my red chair. Other necessary video room adjuncts visible are Ritz Crackers, a TV Guide (is that Farrah Fawcett?) and shelves full of Betamax tapes. Oh, and under my chair a metal file box storing my card catalog of said tapes. The blue binder contains a hand-typed list of just the cartoons. Computerization of the collection was still four years in the future.

Scanned from a print from a friend's 110 camera. View full size.

Chuck Kennedy's Auto Sales: c. 1950s

This Picture was Taken on Walnut Street, East Liverpool, Ohio in the Early 1950's. The fellow on the far right is Chuck Kennedy, and to the left of him is my father, Ed Bowyer.

The car business is not the same today as it was then. I remember the secrecy involved with the new car showings every year, and how we, as kids growing up in the fifties, had so much fun seeing the new models. View full size.

Klein's Restaurant: 1945

World War II was winding down and Biloxi, Mississippi, famous for its seafood industry, found new life-blood when Keesler Air Force Base came to town, and with it thousands of young soldiers flooding town for decades to come.

The Klein family, founders of Klein's Biloxi Bakery 30 years earlier, opened a an ultra modern art deco restaurant that was "always hoppin'" seven days a week. Billy de Wolf and Elvis were among the restaurant's many famous and soon-to-be-famous clientele.

This photo, intended for the local newspaper, was cut in half to fit the publishing space. Two of the Klein brothers, Fred & Junie Klein, kept each half as a souvenir. I inherited one half from my dad. Last year, while visiting my uncle Junie I discovered the half in his scrapbook. With a little Photoshop magic the halves were re-united after a 65 year "divorce."

The chatter, laughing, music from the jukebox, the smell of burgers on the grill all come back when I see this picture. The building was demolished for a new Federal Court House in 1973. Today, the court house stands vacant, awaiting the wrecking ball. The Biloxi Bakery history, photos, stories and recipes can be found in the book Remembering the Biloxi Bakery, available from LULU.com. View full size.

Jesse B. Higdon, standing by horse, showing what appears to be a new threshing machine. Taken in Leesville, Missouri in 1911. He and family moved to Eureka Springs, Arkansas in 1912 and then to Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1916, where they settled. Scanned from an old photo that has been kept by the family since 1911. Jesse Higdon was my wife's grandfather. View full size

On Our Way to Yellowstone

My great-grandfather Grant Webb Sr. with most of the family, still putting out to Yellowstone in the 1920's. Traveling in those old rickety cars, roads mostly of mud, must have been quite an adventure. The trip was from Burley, Idaho to Yellowstone.

WWII Patch Girls

This photo was taken in front of a USO Club, location unknown. The women in the picture are not identified, but both wear "patch jackets" which have patches from the various allied units that served in Europe during World War II. This picture was made after the war ended, as there are several patches on the jackets that were not used until the occupation period in Europe. View full size.

Dave and Maggie Carpenter had recently purchased a farm which was in need of many repairs. The small boy is me with my father, Dave, making repairs to the old house. My father was about 35 years old in this picture and I was about 7. In the far left can be seen the Claremore Mound, a historical landmark in the area.

Dave died at age 54 while living on this farm and my mother, Maggie, lived here until her death in 1985. The house is still standing in 2010 though completely remodeled.
Hager and Meseth

This photo is in our family photos, and is tentatively identified as Emil Hager, my grand-uncle. The Hager and Meseth family came to Chicago in 1884, but the date of this photo is unknown.

John Meseth's Service Station: c. 1930

This Chicago service station was owned by John Meseth, before WWII. The man on the far right is my father, William Hager. The man in the middle is Harry Meseth. The man on the left is another Meseth. The 2nd and 4th men are unknown and the date is uncertain, but my dad was born in 1907, so this is probably around 1930. View full size.

Officers of the 107th Canadian Battalion, Co. "A"

Photo of my ex-husband's great-great-uncle, Lieut. James David Moses (#6), Delaware Indian from the Six Nations Reserve, Ontario, somewhere in France, WWI. "Smoothtown" is the section of the reserve where the Delaware live. He eventually switched to the Royal Air Force as an Observer and was shot down on April 1, 1918, the day the RCAF came into being. He is counted as the first RCAF airman lost in action. His remains were never found.

Also in the photo is another Six Nations man, Edward Oliver Martin (aka Oliver Milton Martin), a Mohawk (#1). Oliver Martin survived the war and went on to serve in WWII. He retired in 1944 with the rank of Brigadier. Like James David, he also moved on to the RAF, trained as an Observer and then qualified as a pilot. After WWII, he was appointed a Provincial Magistrate, the first Native person to hold a judicial position.

107th Battalion, mobilized over 500 Aboriginal soldiers from Saskatchewan and elsewhere in Canada. Some of these Aboriginal units, with reputations for valour, were disbanded for fear they might be wiped out all at once. View full size.
